I’ve been taking lessons for 2 years and my new teacher just gave me some of this advice as well. Love your videos. As an older student 64 years old, I finally am able to follow my dream to play the piano. Taking time and having fun is the key.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m 70 years old and in December of last year I bought myself a keyboard to reunite with piano playing. I took lessons for about 2 years when I was 9 or 10. I was remembering how I loved playing, after the initial 6 months playing “notes” & a very “strict” teacher. Well fast forward to today & I decided “why not” give it another go! I’m learning how to play in “chords” using your “Piano Chord Breakthrough Course” and loving it! It’s amazing how much from my younger years is coming through! I love your tutorials! Especially the way you start very simple & put in “add on’s” that make the song! I’ve watched several folks on RUclips and for me you’re the main teacher in my portfolio! This video was great! Going to definitely rewatch it and put it to practice as I get started on this journey! “Let’s Jump In”!!!👍😎 Dave Shipman
Nate I am 68 and totally new to piano. I have always enjoyed music and have an ear for music. I am awaiting my new piano arrival some time this week. I have to thank you for this tutorial video warning about the 7 mistakes to avoid. My goal is to be a good enough piano player to play my favourite songs. I was a lead singer in a local folk band and would like to sing as I play piano. Thank you for your advice. I look forward to seeing your next videos Tom White 0:15
All good things. Especially interesting about the correct posture. I had a guitar player friend had an issue and it ended up being posture. He had to sit in one of those zero-gravity chairs to get better then he changed the way he held the guitar. I like the slow down and speed up. I use the metronome (they are the best with the light and swing arm) from RUclips and slow it down and over and over until it's feeling good and then faster. Sometimes even faster than what you going to do it at and slow it down and it feels easier. You can also slow down the video on RUclips a play along with that until you're comfortable and bring it up to real time. All good things and thanks for the nice tour of the house and neighborhood. And your certainly never too old to play and learn rock.
Lately, I have been killing my muse by trying too hard to master more difficult pieces and forgetting the enjoyment of playing. Thank you, again, Nate for the reminder of how wonderful it can be to just play, and by that I don't mean create music, but to PLAY.
Hi Nate, I'm just starting to self learn, found all your information very helpful, good examples given me lots of goals. I'm 63 and going to enjoy playing, thank you so much, happy playing...🎼🎹
The dreaded falling note “tutorial”. Once in a while they come in handy. But the human touch makes all the difference. Great tips! There are a lot of great people out there that have made different types of tutorials. Just found you recently Nate, but you are one of the favorites especially for primarily self-taught players. I’ll be accompanying a singer 2 nights this weekend on a couple tunes I learned from you. Thank you.
Thanks Nate. Very interesting and useful advice. I’ve been struggling to “perfect” the hook on Piano Man, and have been continually making two of the mistakes you mentioned. Every time I mess it up, I go back to the start and play all the bits that I already know ! In addition, I have never tried to play the hook slowly. I tried it today and improved massively !
Thank You for sharing this! I have checked out a number of piano learning programs on YT but I always wind up coming back to You! Mistake #7 is absolutely true as I know it well! I will seriously consider signing up for your courses!
Im guilty of #2. Still having a hard time with the pedal. I avoided it when I first started playing, and now am trying to learn to incorporate it into my playing
I love your tutorials, wish there was more variety in genres, but there are a lot of great songs to learn. Making great progress thanks to that. Keep up the good work and thanks so much
Thanks, Nate! This was very inspirational. I've been playing off and on since I was 6 (42 now) from one-on-one lessons, leading a youth group band, or performing with a cover band, and I still make many of these mistakes. My fingering is probably what needs the most work and that's what I try to pay most attention to when I watch your videos. Thanks for taking the time to hit on these.
Thanks Nate for the tips. I've listened to your tips before (slowing down) keeps me from getting frustrated. Even just playing a few verses is satisfying to me as the piece comes together.
In some of the mistakes you point as piano player I have to plead guilty in some of them. I enjoy so much playing that sometimes forget that I was 3 hours in front of the piano, the issue is that enjoy every minute of those 3 hours. Thanks for your advise! As every single time your videos are awesome good
Than you of the foot pedal tip. I've been learning for a year and use the foot pedal but always get that choppy stop. No videos talk bout foot pedal technique and most actively avoid talking about it.
Great summary. There were no new obstacles that you have not mentioned in other videos. But it is a great synopsis. I agree that they are all so important. It's good to be reminded. I like your outdoor scenes. I will be visiting my daughter in Portland soon. I love it there.
Thanks for these great tips, Nate! I am one of those that has delayed playing with the sustain pedal. I tell myself yea yea, I’ll use the pedal when I master the song, but it never happens. Starting TODAY I will begin to incorporate the pedal into my practices and playing, even if it means taking a step back. Thanks again for pointing it out!
Great advice, I myself do slow down as I have problems with changing chords at the correct tempo, only been learning for a few weeks so hoping will gradually get better. John uk

Troppo vero!!! Questo dovrebbe essere un video obbligatorio per gli studenti al primo anno, di qualsiasi strumento!!! (anche per il sustain pedal, equivale a tenere giù le dita che devono stare giù negli strumenti a corda). Bravissimo.
Great tips, Nate. One qualifier: I gave my teacher a coffee mug that read, “I’m not rushing, I’m improvising…” :) But as you recommend, recording myself and using a metronome addressed this, but it’s a constant thing.
Great video Nate. I'm a guitar teacher and in agreement with your 3rd mistake, I'm always telling my students. Don't keep practicing what you're already good at. Practice what you're NOT good at.
Also, you're quite right that learning songs rather than just exercises keeps it fun, which is so important. As a guitarist who's trying to get back into piano, I thank you so much for these lessons.
Thanks again, Nate! I recognised all the challenges and your seven keys to master each challenge. Been there, done that, and doing that. Because, with every new tutorial you post, the challenges keep returning, and I keep reminding myself how to solve them. And slowly it becomes less and less of a challenge to stay focused on the solution and not on the frustration. I also recognised that all these challenges and all your seven keys to master them are applicable to almost any other skill you want to learn. Nate, with your approach, you could coach hockey or ballet and everything in between. Finally, here's a tip to you. Let the sunshine in! Not literally, but since you're a Hair pro, teach us how to play Let the Sunshine In, Good Morning Starshine, or Age of Aquarius. 🐻 "Please!" 🙏🏼
I appreciate all this, Bjorn! Good to hear from you. Oh man, maybe I will do Let The Sunshine In. That song is very special to me - I had thought before to do a tutorial for it but I wasnt sure if there would be a lot of demand, interest. Did you notice....that the underscore for Mistake 6 was me doing an instrumental interpretation of it?
Thanks! Do you mean mistake #4? (there was no underscore for #5) it is a tune I wrote called Midnight City Stroll, it is part of my Piano Chord Breakthroughs course ◡̈
Thanks nate for all your help I'm so happy that you can play piano again THE LORD healed you you learned us every thing we need to know I'm in to pop &rock thanks for telling us about your life we all love you stay safe 💖✌

It sounded like you were talking directly to me after hearing my frustrations Nate. Thanks for the advice We can all use it over and over again.
It feels like a big win for the video to have been experienced this way. Glad it was helpful - cheers!
Many thanks Nate.👍🏽🎹🎼🎶❤

Wait, wait, wait… when you were 20? I thought you were 20 now. Hehe.
I wish!
Such useful tips! Thank you! Can I ask what piece is being played during the 4th tip / around 6min.
Nice video nate!❤❤ Whats the song played during mistake #5?
