    Even xxxx steel will cloud or haze certain chromes...most long term vintage guys at the chicago vintage drum show will tell you with vintage american valuable lugs and 50s and 60s hardware will use a gradual process, 1st starting with mildest solution like maybe deluted dawn first, that usually works great most of the time but if not..then.2nd use a 3M chrome cleaner/polish or maybe a wad of duz all...3nd and only if its really pitted w rust use xxxx steel wool but only in conbination with a light base of wd 40 to loosen the dirt and rust.... in the vintae industry thats what you will hear from them

    • @Drumshoptulsa
      @Drumshoptulsa  3 года назад

      Thanks for the comment @jackpropps. Yeah the older hardware is oftentimes nickel. Which 0000 steel wool doesn’t work well on “vintage” hardware many times. Found that one out the hard way.
      Vintage hardware is always tough to work with. Never know what condition it’s in or how deteriorated it is.
      I’ve heard that Dawn Dish Soap and warm water works well on cleaning vintage hardware. Then of course drying it before using polishing compound. I’ve never been a huge fan of vintage gear and under normal circumstances leave it in its current condition versus trying to revive it.
      There are several shops out there who love vintage and know the ins and outs of them…I don’t happen to be one of them.

      James is it Black Nickel or Black Powdercoat? If it’s true Black Nickel, Pledge Furniture Polish will work GREAT! If powder coated...it will be a bit more work. If the powdercoat is “discoloring” you can have it re-powder coated but that would be the fix. If it’s just gummy and minted up, you can use a little bit of Dawn Dishwashing Soap and some warm water.

    Hi there, I've had a lapse in playing my drums for several years and haven't had access to them. Looking at things recently, it looks certain stands and hoops and other hardware have gotten very corroded. Would i need any cleaning fluids to remove that or will the 0000 steel wool by itself still be enough? I just want to try and be sure my parts can be salvaged and not damaged beyond repair. Any info and help you can share would be wonderful. Thanks so much! 😊

      Hello @masterofmetal15. Great question. In most cases, the corrosion will get cleaned up with the 0000 Steel Wool. I would take a hoop off of the one of the drums, grab a piece of steel wool and test and area with a little cleaning.
      NOW...IF there is Jaegermeister or some other unknown "stickiness" then yes, a little cleaning will do wonders. But as har as the corrosion and general "mung" the 0000 Steel Wool will be like magic.

    Can someone help me with removing old foam from shells? Stored long term in cases with foam that deteriorated. Thanks.

    • @Drumshoptulsa
      @Drumshoptulsa  3 года назад +1

      Hello. Thanks for your question. Are they fiber or plastic cases? If they are plastic, you should be able to use acetone to get the adhesive out but you will still have to pick out the foam. Oddly enough WD-40 does a great job at releasing adhesives.
      If the cases are fiber you are going to have a challenge ahead of you. Once you pull all of the foam out, you may be able to use Goo Gone which is more of a citrus based degreaser and hopefully won’t damage e cases too much. I would test any “solvents” or adhesive removers on a NON-Critical location if the case and see what happens.
      Either way, you are going to have a lot of work ahead of you. I’ve known other people to simply spray adhesive onto new foam and stick it on top of the old foam.
      I imagine it would depend upon how much time you want to spend restoring your cases.
      Please share some images once you’ve decided what to do. I am VERY curious as to your results.

    • @Drumshoptulsa

      @@TheKannielu yeah....they are older fiber cases. If you visit an army surplus store, they have various thicknesses of “camping foam” and you can purchase sheets of it for a reasonable price. If the drums are just going to be stored in the cases, I would suggest getting the foam, wrap it around the drum and place them into the cases. At least they will be safe.
      If they are being stored, remember to keep them off of pavement as the cold and moisture will make its way into the case. Store them on a palette and to keep them off the ground.

      Hey Mini Me…nickel hardware (i.e. vintage hardware), is a bit more labor intensive to clean. Yes…0000 Steel Wool will help tremendously. However keep in mind, nickel is a “precious metal” whereas chroming is a “process.”

      Haha! Understood. Yes the hardware isn’t as critical as say drums/cymbals. But I clean everything about 1X a month to ensure nothing is busted, failing and looks it’s best for any gig.
      Everyone has their own perspectives and none are right or wrong…just different.
      Thanks for being awesome on your comments. We really appreciate them.

      Yeah, I check of course that the hardware is solid and pins are secure etc on the boom arms and not coming out. My hardware is so old though that I would really need to just buy new stuff anyway. I will clean my drum lugs and hoops but that's about it. Thanks man!❤

      @@erockscott1184 agreed Sir. Gotta keep it working. I really appreciate @gibraltar and @mapex hardware because they are serviceable pieces of hardware with readily available parts. Super helpful keeping the longevity in the hardware.
      Good luck with the rest of the year and have a great Sunday.
