This solution works and looks the cleanest in my opinion but if you want to train to be faster and have variable speed, a train motor (bb0896c01) with the battery box shown in my part list (88009) will work well. Great mod! I just got done motorizing my tender without checking the Internet first for a solution (challenging myself). Happy with my tender but pretty impressed by your set up and definitely going to make room for my conductor now!
I did an alternate build of the tender. Same thing of extending the tender seen here but i also made room in the tender to hide the motor and wire itself too. However note of warning: thr motor is in reverse (the end where the cord comes out of the motor is forward) so when using a remote or powered up app you will need to throw the switch/push rhe - button. Even used a small trick from the express passenger train to allow access to the button but also conceal it as well
Ah ok. I'm actually trying to power up my Hogwarts Express train atm but what I'm going to try is just the tender as I'm going to combine 2 things I've seen here and from another video to see if that works.
Thank you for this build! Any tips to help the train wheels maintain traction? I have the rubber band on like you do but the train loses traction and stops coming out of corners.
You can try adding rubber bands to the other wheels. If the train is coming out of corners, you may want to check the couplers. I don’t think it was this one, I think it is the 2018 Hogwarts express that derailed from the way the couplers were designed. Sorry for the late reply on this one. If you have two rubber bands try only 1 wheel because one wheel needs to slip while the other needs the traction
Personally, I still prefer 4708, but it could be worse. At least the cab now fits a minifig. However, she still needs standard 9v style magnetic couplers…. And longer coaches, as those coaches she came with are way to small for the real Hogwarts Express. Good job though given the imperfect nature of the original product without modifications.

I have also used the powered up app and you can build a variable controller and it changes the power input to the motor hence changing the speed and it’s better for starting up with a motor that only has one gear
Just ordered the bricks from your list but i guess the (red) bricks to make the battery hub hidden are not included(?) what parts could i get for that? This will be my first lego set so I don’t have any parts lying around. Would it be an option to just put in a small lithium pack instead of the battery hub? That way i could make a physical on/off switch, charge port and make it smaller. Edit : i guess i’ll also be needing the remote if i go for the 88009 hub?
You can use the Lego powered up app instead of buying a controller if you have a compatible mobile device. I’ve never tried a small lithium pack so I do not have a good answer for you. The bricks for the tender are simply used to cover the box. I May have used 1x8 red bricks here and or 1x3s and 1x4s. I’m not sure on the exact ones but a variety will work and you can try different colors too

I have failed to see any link related to parts in / under your video discerption. I am not professional just doing this upgrade to make my Son happy because he love watching train moving on track. The conductor just not drive the train he should not be in the cab. The conductor never goes in there. He’s usually in the train cars, making sure everything is in line
We are trying to get this list but all the parts we look up by part number don’t show up on the Lego webpage. They are under different numbers and some are proving hard to find. Any suggestions?
I’m sorry this is a very late reply. I’m sure you got them by now but Lego will not always have every part. If that is the case you may need to place a Bricklink order

Is it possible to use variable motor speed using PyBricks? That would solve the constant speed limitation of this motor.

What train tracks do you use?
I use RC track. The plastic Lego track. My ceiling train uses 9V track because RC trains can go on it too:)

Problem now is you cant get parts easy to do ANY MOC
