    Right now LAANC is primarily for part 107 operators so recreational flyers don't get authorizations. You can only 'notify' of intended flights but you still have to follow FAA airspace rules. However, LAANC authorizations will be available to hobbyists on July 23rd. Here it is from the horse's mouth: www.faa.gov/uas/programs_partnerships/data_exchange/

    THIS IS THE BEST INFORMATIONAL VIDEO I HAVE WATCHED SINCE I STARTED RUclips SEVERAL YEARS AGO!! Has there been any significant changes since you did this video? I'm studying for the Part 107 test and consistently getting high 90's to 100 on practice exams, so I feel pretty confident at this point and may go ahead and take the exam very soon.. Nothing is final yet (at least I don't think so) but here are some impending FAA initiatives since this video: www.faa.gov/uas/programs_partnerships/DOT_initiatives/. They are actually good changes for part 107 pilots. I'd say if you're feeling confident and prepared, go ahead a sit for the exam. I actually used a program called remotepilot101 to study and will be using it to study for re-certification here in June. It was $150 for a lifetime subscription. Also search for Tony Northrup's part 107 study guide out here on RUclips. Thanks for the kind words as well, I really appreciate it.

    Thank you for an exceptionally clear explanation, with a logical and well spoken lecture. I downloaded the app to my phone, it worked without any effort on my part VERY cool info site. Will review material, as a new potential flyer from the 80's, the new rules are more demanding, but there are way more flyers who need some controls to avoid serious injury. Joining the ama, and a local field group makes the package complete, and safer for all. Best wishes, and again thanks for the hard work.

    Thank you! Am I understanding you correctly? As a licensed 107 pilot, in order to film for compensation within restricted airspace (below or above any shelves) I can only submit for a waiver using the FAA website correct? LAANC authorization would not apply since I am being commercially compensated correct? Appreciate the shared wisdom!

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад +1

      LAANC is for obtaining authorization to fly within the 5-mile radius of restricted airspace such as class C, D, etc. Whether you're being compensated or not, as a Part 107 operator you can still request this type of authorization. It just opens up more airspace than for just recreational/hobbyist flying. It's one of the great things about being certified. Here's everything you'd have to submit a waiver request for: www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/part_107_waivers/

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад +1

      But yes, you are correct. Waivers are requested through the FAA website. LAANC is a separate process.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  4 года назад

      Right. LAANC is only for authorizations within controlled airspace. Uncontrolled airspace (Class G) in general requires no authorization to fly as long as there are no NOTAMS or flight restrictions issued. AirMap or Kittyhawk both do a good job of providing all of that info.

I have a client that wants some footage of their airplane at the airport, but in order to get clearance from the other apps, they are asking for the enterprise profile (~$150/month) which is too expensive for a one man show.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад

      Sounds like you would need a waiver for that, but I don't see anything like that listed here: www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/part_107_waivers/. I would be highly surprised if you could get authorization through LAANC for that.

    Is there any logical reason to have an AGL of 0 if there are buildings that are higher than that(some of them almost 400 feet high)? I doubt me flying a drone at 30 AGL next to a building that is 100 feet high is going to put a airplane or helicopter at risk.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад

      I get your point, but I doubt the FAA will change any of that. Also keep in mind that manned aircraft (especially private pilots, helicopters, etc) often fly lower than 400 AGL. Now when I'm flying downtown I get to fly 400 feet above the tallest structure, but again, I say just always fly smart and safe and keep your eyes peeled for manned aircraft.

      Thanks, I need to better understand the symbols and text on the charts. I'm using KING Schools and may look at dronlaunchacademy.com if I want to indulge myself. I'd certainly like to pass on the first attempt, but even more I want to know what I know and where I'm lacking so to be a better sUAS pilot.

      I used RemotePilot101, but there are good free or inexpensive alternatives out there. You can also find some good stuff on RUclips on sectional charts and weather. Tony Northrup did a pretty good one: ruclips.net/video/6_ucCKFJUCU/видео.html. You'll definitely pass the first time if you do enough prep and practice tests.

    I appreciate your channel so much. One question, I just started the hobby of flying drones and will follow all rules. After watching this video I installed the AirMap app and setup my account. I believe the app has a different flow process for “fly for fun”. I’ve haven’t gotten any authorization for a flight plan. What am I supposed to do if I don’t have the 107 license? Is it any benefits on obtaining the license?

      Hey AJ. When LAANC was rolled out it was supposed to include a way for hobbyists to notify ATC of flights within 5-miles of an airport. It's right in the name: Low Altitude Authorization and Capability. Well, it doesn't seem like that has been included yet. The FAA site now says: "LAANC provides airspace authorizations only" www.faa.gov/uas/programs_partnerships/data_exchange/. So it appears its really a system for 107 pilots right now and its not yet a viable way to provide notification to ATC as a hobbyist. You'd still need to contact ATC directly unfortunately. Thanks for the Kofi by the way, I really appreciate that! It was a nice surprise.

    For DJI Drones and others do you have to do something to the drone to use this?? Another words if I was close to an airport now and my drone wouldn't start because of airspace, once I apply for the LAANC for that area how does my drone know when to start because if you're in a bad area the drone won't even turn start up??
    I guess I'm not sure how that system talks to the drone so the drone will actually work?
    Thank you please help

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад

      The AirMap app doesn't interface with your drone. It will not override any DJI no fly zones. However, DJI has a similar process in the DJI Go 4 app. I have been in class C airspace and got a pop up message in the app. It will ask you to enter your phone number. Once you do everything it asks you will be able to fly (depending on where it is of course).

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад

      Right now LAANC is primarily for part 107 operators so hobbyists won't get authorizations. You can only 'notify' of intended flights but you still have to follow FAA airspace rules. However, LAANC authorizations will be available to hobbyists on July 23rd. Here it is from the horse's mouth: www.faa.gov/uas/programs_partnerships/data_exchange/

    This is great information! I was born and raised in GR! I do have a question. When I downloaded the AirMap. I didn't get the same setup as you did. I go through all the setup and have an account. At your video 9:48 yours shows Pilot last name, phone number, pilot first name. My app doesn’t show that. Do you have a different app? And when I completed everything to submit I don’t get a confirmation. Do need to setup an account with LAANC?

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  5 лет назад

      Not really sure why its different. Maybe Android vs iOS. You won't get confirmation unless you submit a flight as a part 107 operator. Otherwise you're just notifying ATC as a hobbyist. It should say flight plan submitted successful or something like that.

    Okay I just subscribed to you. Hopefully you can answer questions sometimes at some of the other people never answer any questions. I just have a question I've just downloaded the app and for instance it came up with an advisory controlled airspace but then it says automated authorization available at or below 400 feet so does that mean you still have to file a LAANCE report or does that mean you're cleared to fly 400 feet or below?
    Also in another example I pulled up Fort Lauderdale Florida , where I am going soon, and there is a 200 with an orange line over it when I clicked the box it says, "Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport class C airspace requires FAA authorization. Automated authorization available at or below 200 feet". Please tell me exactly what this means because I'm very confused.
    Thank you so much

    • @sarahwagner2998
      @sarahwagner2998 5 лет назад +1

      My understanding is that it is telling you that this process of automated authorization is available (and required to obtain) at 400 feet and below.....and likewise in the case where it says 200 feet or below, you are restricted to fly at or below the 200 feet limit. If you notice close to airports it will even say 0 meaning no flying at all. This is just telling you that at these limits around airports, you are able to apply for this authorization and fly within the limits it states. Make sense? This is what I am gathering. Hope this is accurate and helpful.

    If you are outside of 5m radius of an airport, so no Class E airspace, do you still have to get Laanc authorization to fly in any area as a hobbyist?

    • @GadgetInspector

      LAANC is only for authorizations within controlled airspace, so you wouldn't need it otherwise.

    What happens when you are in Class D airport zone and the app tells you that you can fly~100 feet but need to contact ATC. Upon contacting them, they say no flights are allowed as rules have changed since May. (I used to fly here prior to that by letting them know).

    • @GadgetInspector

    Does this process work the same way for red no fly zone? I have a nuclear site near by and it showed green until I got there and DJI SCREEN showed red no fly..could I use my phone to connect to AirMap for clearance? Thanks

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  4 года назад

      AirMap does not interface with the DJI Go 4 app, so you would need to use the unlock feature in DJI Go 4. I would be surprised if you got it to unlock though. I'd also be surprised if AirMap doesn't show 0 and red in terms of allowable AGL. Would make for some cool shots though, but sheesh....

      LAANC and DJIs no fly zones are two separate things, so if you get LAANC authorization you still might be able to fly a DJI drone. DJI does have an unlocking feature in the DJIGo4 app, but again, not integrated with LAANC.

      Don't panic bro, at least not yet. I think this system is actually a step in the right direction, but the uncertainty about how the new law will affect the hobby has folks worried. Just keep flying responsibly and having fun and don't worry about the stuff we can't control. Glad you're staying out of trouble; it sometimes finds us but it helps not to go looking for it.

    I live in NC. I attempted to get approval to fly in the area of boat dock. I did the flight plan. It said something like Area D prohibited. Automated Approval coming soon. That’s probably not the exact language used but pretty close. The ceiling for the area I wanted to fly is 400. I’m just wondering if a small airport like I have here doesn’t have automated approval?

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  3 года назад

      That could definitely be the case....and prohibited likely mean no go. If there was a NOTAM or TFR or something it could be temporary.

    How does the property owner figure into this? Is this giving you FAA approval to fly in airspace at private property as long as you do not go on the property? You didn't say anything about if that building you want to fly at was private or public.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  4 года назад +1

      Hey Steve. LAANC governs USA airspace. I would say make sure you're knowledgeable about local laws and ordinances. These differ even in the same darn town. It's hard to make a blanket statement when that is the case, however, it's always best to err on the conservative side. I had a boss years ago that told me to never take anything for granted. You should check local ordinances about flying over private property before knowingly doing so. Personally, I have never knowingly flown over private property, but realistically, I may have without knowing it. Even more complicated is when you go out for a real estate shoot and have to fly over other homes in order to shoot the property you're hired for. I ask my client to notify their neighbors that there will be some guy with a drone taking photos/video of their house on X date at X time and not to freak out.

    I have been working with AirMap for about five days now trying to get it to work. I'm part 107 and the app hangs on the "verify phone number" step. Which must be new as it is not in your video. Also the app would not save my number even though it grabs it off the phone and asks me to verify it. Airmap support got the number to stick but I have not received authorization text for flight two days from now. Wait and see I guess. I like the app it tells you exactly where you are in controlled airspace. Hope I get it worked out. Thanks for the video.

      Hey Dave. The FAA LAANC system via AirMap or other apps is not integrated with DJI's locking system as far as I know. I haven't seen anything indicating otherwise. You basically need to do both processes. Authorization through LAANC and NFZ unlocking through the DJI Go 4 app.
