Im from Southern California and work accross the street from John Wayne Airport. While at work I followed these instructions and in about 1 minute i got authorization to fly within a few hundred yards of the runway as a hobbyist. Thanks for putting out this video and all the effort you put in for us, Ken!
Not sure how this works. I used it to get approved to fly 3.75 miles from a parachute plane airport that a farmer has and uses once or twice a month. Airmap said I was violating the rule about flying at an airport. By the way I'm a hobbyist.I think the faa should be making sure this airport thing is a real airport. I think no farmer should be able to ground drones because he has a swelled head about a powered parachute.
@@RS-fg5mf at the time it just approved me. It was instant. Dont know what is different for you except that now they put in stronger altitude restrictions. Still you should have gotten something so long as you had some kind of data connection on your device.
@@rich500 I cant speak to how or why a farm is an airport. All I know is at the time I posted this the altitude restrictions were super light. Now it's all zero feet altitude by me... Great information Ken, thank you for driving the 2 hrs in order to show the LAANC in action. That is dedication and we all appreciate it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. I have been out of town working for 9 months and just got my birds out. I had AirMap for a year now and was timid to submit flight plans. Thanks for the help brother. All batteries charged , I am charged and ready to fly now. Thanks to you
If you are requesting higher than the grid altitude in LAANC you have to put the request ahead of time. Your message "Rejected upon submission. Flight start is too close for manual authorization" Will be replaced with "Manual authorization on submission". You won't get instant approval but it will get forwarded to the tower and they will decide based on traffic pattern etc. It looks like you have to submit it 2 days ahead of time for manual authorization.
Thanks Ken for showing us how to fly legally and set up flight plans. Very big help! You have put out the best instructional videos in my opinion so far.
I remember the first time I called in to my local municipal airport (small town America) and they told me that from what they knew, I flat out could not fly a drone within 5 miles of the airport. It should be noted that they weren't denying me access because they didn't want to, they just for some reason, didn't know much about the drone laws at the time. I was handed over to another ATC, and they cleared things up, asked for some general contact info for future flights (again, small town America, they were really cool) and let me go and do my thing. I'm really happy that I was able to help introduce a senario for someone to learn how to handle those types of situations so if another drone pilot (or myself!) calls in, they know how to handle it. :)
Thank you for this info... I live about 4 miles from an airfield and had a little trouble on flying my drone over my own house. Your video here has helped me beable to fly my drone in my own backyard and not have issues with the DJI software stopping me now.
I got a spark two weeks ago ... only three real flights so far. This is one of a very few videos about this topic, but, it seems LAANC is crucial to flying nowadays. Kudus to you. The map layers in AirMap include more information than the DJI app, showing AMA airfields, prisons, national parks, airfields, etc.. AirMap is a great flight planning tool. Thank you.
We drone pilots need a universal way of waving back when people wave at your drone. I've tried spinning my Mavic around in circles but that also really ruins the recording part of things. great video thanks for the lesson, much better than the standard DJI instructional videos I must say

Learned a lot from this video. Thought it was interesting that the people on the bridge waved. That is a testament to people learning that drones aren't necessarily some "evil spy force" and they took it in stride. That bodes well for the future of drones. That said, I know I'm gonna get pushback, but I am aware drones can and are abused in regard to privacy issues. But, when used properly, the public doesn't need to fear them.
I'm looking forward to July 23rd when they roll it out for the hobbyist to use. I currently have a problem with air map not allowing me to change my profile it's on file with them. I guess I need to create a new account.
Could i fly like you did if i wasn't 107? Compass error could be fixed by moving it to a different location on the parking structure. If that dosen't work because of abundance of rebar you can hold it up and hand launch. Interference should go away, if not. Take off from another location. Informative video, thx for sharing.
One thing you forgot to mention, LAANC currently only available to use for part 107 operators, but not a hobbyist, like me. They keep promising we, the hobbyist, will have this option soon... but hey, at least the updated rules no longer say "5 milea from airports", it says "controlled airspace". Means no more worrying about flying too close to those dirt stripes that rarely see a lone Cessna using them, cause hey, class G, so as long as i keep my distance from anything that actually does land there, i am perfectly legal.

Good stuff as always. I have a shoot in two days, followed your video and hit submit to be told airmap did not submit? Question: Do they wait till day of flight or maybe I should lower from 400ft to 350 or so? It's a small airport and I'm shooting real estate so I don't think it should be an issue. The app does have the flight plan listed just not sure what happens now and trying to plan the shoot and let client know we are a go. Any in-site on planning flights a day or more out would be get! Thanks so much Ken
Hey! You can use the online version of Airmap to check airspace, but use the mobile app version on-site day-of to get the best LAANC result. Good luck!👍

I just used the AirMap app to file 2 flight plans in Central Texas for today. (1 up near Canyon Lake and the other south of SeaWorld in San Antonio) I didn't get any responses back after submitting them. They just showed up as future flight plans. I'm not a 107 yet, but didn't see any place in the app settings / profile to enter what your video showed. Hmm
Thanks Ken! Did my first real estate job with LAANC last week. Easy peasy! I have been told there are instances where you have to get DJI to unblock the geo fence as well. Have you had to do that? Also, I understand the FAA and Kittyhawk are now in kahoots and it's the preferred app for this. Any insight on that?
Congrats! Yes, sometimes DJI geofencing doesn't jibe with FAA stuff. You should be able to opt out of the app restrictions and fly if you have LAANC approval. 👍

No matter the answer, YOU have given me the knowledge of new rules and regulations as they come. Those are THE BEST VIDEOS. I just can't keep up with changes every few months. But this... This seems WAY easier than calling the traffic tower
All DJI drones require calibration. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel, Chris!👍
GREAT VIDEO THANKS
Just frustrating that the FAA shut down drone flights in controlled airspace for this extended time during the LAANC upgrade for hobby flyers.
The FAA announced that LAANC will be available for hobbyists effective July 23, 2019.
Ken Heron Thanks for that update! I’ve been hoping to get information about when LAANC would be available for hobbyists. I’m in Palm Beach County and almost everywhere is restricted! And don’t get me started about when POTUS comes to town. 30 mile radius geofence!
Thank you Ken, really appreciated you going through the AirMap app!
Nice thanks for sharing
I use Kittyhawk to get LANNC it is really easy to use too.
thanks, I've learned so much from your videos :)
Very easy to use. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome, John.
Civil twilight too?
Ha ha, Ken check out your RC Antennas at around 5:37.. Looks like they had a rough night Ha ha.. Cool vid as always
Haaa! I saw that.
Nice video, thanks Ken!
Great. So I have to go through that every time I want to fly my whoop in my back yard. Sounds perfectly reasonable.....
Your whoop isn't heavy enough to be registered.
@@KenHeron right but does not needing to register it exempt it from the rest of the rules? I haven't seen anything stating that.
Thanks for that... always wondered how to get authorized... How does your drone get such good reception?
Great info! One question, what if some entrances to parks have no drone zone signs but LAANC gives approval in those places.
Local law has NO jurisdiction over FEDERAL airspace.
@@KenHeron Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I attempted a TV antenna station and ran into some of the same issues you had in a previous video. Darn mavic air lol
Thank you for this! I know you know you're awesome sir! Cheers!
Thanks, Ken I'm going to give this a try!
Good luck!👍
Nice video my good man. Thanks for sharing this video with me. I am downloading the airmap laanc app right on my iPhone. I am going tp try it later on. Thanks for all you do and please keep flying. Until then BUH & BYE. 👨✈️👨✈️👨✈️👨✈️✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍💯💯💯🚁🚁🚁😏😏😏😏😏
I just used the AirMap app to file 2 flight plans in Central Texas for today.
(1 up near Canyon Lake and the other south of SeaWorld in San Antonio)
I didn't get any responses back after submitting them. They just showed up as future flight plans.
I'm not a 107 yet, but didn't see any place in the app settings / profile to enter what your video showed.
Hmm
The options change after becoming certified as part 107.
Nice shoot and excellent explain!
Thanks!🤓👍
I appreciate you that was very helpful
Sorry I have bad connection right now (out of the country) is this LAANC out already for hobbyist? Thanks love your vids
Yes, it's available for everyone.
