I genuinely think what I took away from this video, and frankly ive known this all along deep down, but this video highlights a very important fact !! People dont know what remote id is, but when you tell them its just to track us drone operators so everybody knows who we are and where we are, then it sounds like a great idea to everybody !! However, if you explain to them in a more detailed manor about what implications this actually has and what an invasion of privacy it it, then it all of a sudden doesnt seem like a good idea... This is exactly how the Faa have cleverly implemented it and viewed it to the public, [without the details].. They just make it sound like mehh its good for you and everybody else..

Would have been interesting if to another group of the public you had explained remote ID in a slightly different way. Such as "if your kids or family are out flying model planes, this will allow strangers to track them down to where they are standing and potentially confront them if they (the strangers) don't like the idea of models being flown there". My guess is you'd get different answers.
I've had RID for 8 years now. With a passport and a visa, living in another country with no FAA, 107, mandatory registration, unless drone weighs more then 15 lbs, I'm free flying
Very Funny Comparison Video. We Need To Know What Are The Best Ones To Get. I Look Forward To Your Future Videos, On Testing and Comparing The Remote ID'S That Are Available, and That FAA Will Approve So All Of Us Part 107 Pilots Will Be Protected. Thank You Ken, Keith, and Barkley.
Clearly the self-certification (by way of compliance declaration) isn't working because most of these RID modules fail to meet the accuracy levels mandated by the RID rule. The whole RID thing is turning into a bigger joke than anyone could have imagined.
Yesssss. So much this. The RID units they had were working perfectly well until they got about 2k ft out, and all of them failed for the same reason. If this were after Sept., ALL of those flights SHOULD be reported for having lost RID contact. Malicious compliance could flood the FAA with false positives, but even this test demonstrates as it stands right now: these units will never be able to track long-range pilots. This will ONLY track pilots flying NEAR enough for the BT signal to work. I'll bet Ken had full video from the Phantom the whole time. BT RID is a joke that could be simulated with a free phone app as follows: report pilot location and home point, start UAS location there, travel in random direction 2k ft and stop reporting. Done. Also, what happens if you want to fly a DJI Avata indoors after RID is required?
@@coalfpv Regarding RID indoors... the FAA says that RID is not required for indoor flight -- but they also say that it must not be able to be disabled by the drone owner and it must be "tamper resistant". How's that going to work then? 🙂

I’m still trying to understand how this is suppose to work and the requirements. It was my understanding that any RC aircraft weighing under 0.55 lbs. did not require RID. Is this correct? I mostly fly small cheap “foamy flyers” and they are all under that weight. I also pretty much don’t even fly above tree-top level. A few years ago when the FAA started with some of these shenanigans I was told I had to notify all airports that I was flying my airplanes if I was within their airspace. When I told them what I was flying, (small 12” or less foam RC airplanes), at treetop level they said that was idiotic that I was contacting them. They said any real airplane flying low enough to where my RC planes would be of concern already has other issues like TREES, HOUSES, TOWERS!!!
"so, would you like a remote ID for your car? it's just a digital licence plate but your position and speed will be recorded for safety and ticketing purposes"
Id love to see the same video of this, but done using the internal R-ID of the DJI drones like an Avata or something similar VS the aftermarket module's, and how the range is on the dji drones VS these modules here..
Hey, what about a part 107 pilot who owns a fleet of drones over 20 for the sole purpose of performing air drone shows (assuming each drone is weighs less than the required amount to register), would RID apply to that individual, or just those who have to legally register their drone based on weight?

The regs do not say that you can not have multiple modules on a single drone. It just says that it must have a remote ID module that is broadcasting RID message elements.
Here's the response I received from the FAA when I inquired about it! The answer is dependent upon the operating rule you are flying under. We need RID on baseballs, footballs and golf balls at least. Rid needs to be required for the FAA because their heads are in the clouds. Fun video thanks
RID he's not going to do with the FAA says, hello surveillance of rogue drone pilots because it's not accurate enough nor does it broadcast very far away. So therefore the intent must be something else. The goal is to make it so that drone and RC fixed-wing pilot cannot legally fly. This will clear the air space for the big corporate commercial drone companies.
The FAA doesn't have the authority to regulate hobby and toy airplanes. The FAA exists under the interstate commerce clause to regulate commercial aviation, not toys. Toy airplanes don't fly interstate! The Academy of Model Aeronautics, in coordination with the Hobby industry needs to hire constitutional attorney's to put an end to the nonsense. If states and cities want to make and enforce rules as to where you can fly these toys, then okay, likely some rules are needed. But those rules shouldn't apply everywhere.
You should bring attention to the fact that remote id broadcasts the pilot location. Not there is an app the public can use to find them. We don't need to be letting that information out. The public does not need to know what app, where to find it or what. It's not there job. I don't want to get bothered by some random person while I'm out doing work.
Amazing video as always ken . Thank you for this scientific experiment . And now the remote id song will be in my head forever . It will have a permanent file in my brain lol . This makes me wonder just how many politicians own stock in these companies making these invasive trackers. I have been flying R.C. since I was in my teens and I'm 66 now, started with Estes rockets, I have 7 R.C. aircraft and 3 drones and will not be running RID on any of them. I complied with the first go around with registering and marking them, it stops here.
I have no problem complying with remote id. My problem is the modules were supposed to be $50, not $130 and up. Due to high risk flying I use several cheaper DJI drones like the mini se and 2 se that don’t have remote id built in so I’m probably done with those come September.
I noticed your comment on the video about the firmware update for the P4P. I guess since DJI doesn't list the P4, I'm out of luck. Really not looking forward to having to buy and add a module onto my drone and not ready to purchase a new drone yet. Maybe the effective start date will get extended.
That is correct. They are not network capable, most of them at least. It is not required to be network capable. So if Karen is within a short proximity of your drone, they can use the app to look up the app but it doesn't tell them the pilot's name, it just gives the ID.
Hey Ken! Interesting story, I bought a Beacon, mounted it on the top of my drone, and did a test flight. All went well, then I took it out on a construction site. 7 minutes into a DroneDeploy mission the drone suddenly stopped. I hit return to home, and it started back and stopped again part way back I then landed manually and removed the unit. Apparently if you mount it on top of a DJI P4v2 it can interfere with the drone GPS. Once I removed it the flight went fine. So you might do a video on where to mount those so that the drone is "safer" and not more unreliable.
make a video on how many times the faa will warn you that you need to comply with remote i'd .. what the fine is and how they are going to enforce it. also whats worse flying with out remote id or flying at night without my light. my lights add 30 grams making my mini 2 remote id . so pick one or the other faa lights or remote id.
That was entertaining. This topic reminds of the line, that if you outlaw something, then only the outlaws will have it... but that's just the way it is.
0:50 "You should know who is doing surveillance over you." Well, that is a typical example of what people think drones are all about. And then think Remote ID is a good solution. I wonder what they would reply if they A: learn that the FAA considers every RC aircraft a drone, and B: are told that even a kid flying a 250g+ foam plane in a parc is required to use Remote ID Do kites need Remote ID btw? That would make it even more crazy...
So....just a thought. If you're flying respectfully where you're allowed, but RID is showing you somewhere else, couldn't that inaccuracy pose a problem? Some Karen just might accuse you something you didn't do (like fly over her swimming pool when she was tanning naked....not like that ever happened ya know). Or the FAA might be calling asking why are you flying there.....umm. What possible could go wrong?
Its juust variable latency delay in map updating the pin. Probably because of different frequencies used by the modules. Lower frequency = slower update.
Most things are more dangerous than FPV pilots. Making it even more ridiculous that any rc aircraft over 250g is included in the requirement to comply with Remote ID

Did I read that caption correctly about a firmware update to the Phatom 4 to make it compliant by the end of the year?
Ken, you would be fun to hang with for a day :)
☺️
I believe the FAA has only approved 2 modules for use at this point. Might be helpful to list the exact ones that are approved for use.
f the faa
I think I want to buy the worst performer.... remain in compliance and remain invisible.
What app are you using to track the drones.
That was entertaining. This topic reminds of the line, that if you outlaw something, then only the outlaws will have it... but that's just the way it is.
RF won't bother a magnetic compass but it might bother an electronic compass. Did you calculate a weight and balance for that flight???
fit them to all cars, bicycles, trucks, scooters, vans, gliders, light aircraft, microlites and people.....................that'll work.
WHat's the app we use for remote ID?
We used Open Drone ID for this video, it's on the playstore.
Hi Ken, Great video and information about Remote ID. Please for your next video put it on your FPV quad
Where's my "Buh..... and bye"?
0:50 "You should know who is doing surveillance over you."
Well, that is a typical example of what people think drones are all about. And then think Remote ID is a good solution. I wonder what they would reply if they A: learn that the FAA considers every RC aircraft a drone, and B: are told that even a kid flying a 250g+ foam plane in a parc is required to use Remote ID
Do kites need Remote ID btw? That would make it even more crazy...
Ken, what app were you using to track the RID modules and do you find that is the best app to use?
Looks like OpenDrone ID
I’m ignorant but what happens on September if I don’t a module???? Will my DJI Mavic Air 2 just not fly????
Thanks Ken!!!!
You'll be fine.
Fly safely.
Good question would it open you up to prosecution because of inaccuracies? I'd like to know
Good fun video guys.... See you on the next one!
Lmao ken always doin crazy shi😂
I just got me 4 RID spoofers so I would have about 16 running around with my currently non ID drone.
Here in Ireland alot of private planes never use remote ID, but they will still try, and go after drone pilots for any little thing
I feel like they might work better with external RF shielding. Ya. That's the ticket.
Its juust variable latency delay in map updating the pin. Probably because of different frequencies used by the modules. Lower frequency = slower update.
Oh. I miss my phantom 4 pro +. It had Kens eyes on it, as well. 😢
I just wanna know which one lost single first 😂
Ken... YOU ARE THE BEST!
Aww shucks
Gotta love this it’s gonna fail the RID date just gets pushed back and then fact we still have to pay for it is crazy
If you want to be compliant, wouldn’t you want to pick one that fails fast. Not your fault it fails, you tried.
Best drone channel ever. Hey , wherr do you live Ken?
Thanks!
I live in West Tennessee.
The public doesn't know about Remote ID. I think the public doesn't know about Remote ID YET!
It's equivalent to having a license plate and app to track someone using Rollerblades. Except Rollerbladers are far more dangerous than fpv pilots.
Most things are more dangerous than FPV pilots. Making it even more ridiculous that any rc aircraft over 250g is included in the requirement to comply with Remote ID
