  • This is my guitar tab for Bob Seger's Old Time Rock and Roll. It is a note for note transcription of the original.
This one goes out to Bob Seger for being one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time. It was a request, and I had the individual studio tracks, so I thought I'd transcribe it. The guitar was buried in the original, so it really helped to be able to have a separate track of it. I also transcribed the saxophone solo and arranged it for guitar. Hope you like it.
Old Time Rock and Roll was written by Thomas E. Jones lll and George Jackson, and was first released on the album: Stranger in Town by Bob Seger in 1979
The Equipment used in this recording is as follows:
    Slate ML1 Microphone
    The software is Cubase Pro.
The audio interface is an Axe IO
The Bass is a Sire straight into the Axe.
The Guitars are a Fender Stratocaster, and an SG Epiphone Prophecy, straight into the Axe. Amplitube 5 was used for amp emulation.
All vocals were recorded with the Slate ML1
Ozone 9 was used for mastering.
The video, and the recording, were produced by Abraham Myers.

Or, if you're trying to learn something and you can't find any tabs for it, send me a request. I can't always get to them right away, but I will try my best.
To me, Music is about love, and helping one another.

Question for ya, if I’m improvising a solo, with the key of the song transposed to the key of E, what scales would you use?

I would say the E blues scale, and the E Major Pentatonic scale. And, if you want to play part of the original solo in E, just simply move everything down 2 frets. The song is in Gb because everything is tuned down. So, everything I'm playing on the video should be brought down a whole step (from Gb to E) or 2 frets on the guitar, if you're playing in E Major.

You'd either have to tune the guitar up a half step, or just put a capo on the first fret.

Question that I'm embarrassed to ask - if I've never picked up an electric guitar in my life, but I'm dying to try and play what you're playing, what equipment would I need to buy? Even if I end up being a complete failure without spending too much money, I'd consider it a worthwhile experiment. I just love this song so much.

Oh, don't be embarrassed, that is a common question amongst people who want to get into playing. I would say, pickup a hundred dollar guitar from guitar center, like a fender squier, and then, either a little amp with distortion, that's the effect that makes the guitar sound crunchy, or if you have a computer, you can buy an amp simulator software. A small fender amp would probably be fine. So, I would say for a couple hundred bucks you could try it out. Amazon also has a lot of cheap electrics that are good for learning.
And don't hesitate to ask another question if you have one, that's what I'm here for.

@@ThePickingPythagorean You're too kind. It's good to know a Fender Squier is within my budget. On closer inspection, I can't tell from this performance if there are 2 separate guitars (it sounds too "good" for there to be just 1). The part I want to replicate is like what this gentleman is doing: ruclips.net/video/98TbgAcS5Ls/видео.html (which looks like just 1 guitar). Could you shed some light on that?

@@sarnobat2000 Sure, the original has three guitars, one lead, one rhythm, and then another rhythm that just plays a very choppy version of the 1st rhythm guitar, to kind of just rock it up a bit.
The rhythm part I'm playing in the beginning is the same chords and basic rhythm of the song, so, that part just keeps repeating underneath the leads. What the guy is playing on the video above, is the rhythm part only and he's playing it up the neck instead of on the 2nd string.
The other difference, is that this song is in G and the guitars and bass are tuned down a half step. He is not tuned down like the record, but just literally playing it in F#, which will work, but it's just a different way to get the sound.

@@ThePickingPythagorean Hmmmm, hopefully I can replicate the F# version with just 1 guitar. I'm going to wait for a period before buying anything to see if I still feel the desire. I'm sure this won't be the last question I have. Thank you for now

@@sarnobat2000 Yeah, playing the rhythm part in F# will be almost the same. It's really just one fret down on everything. And yes, I would wait, and see if it's something you really want to try before you buy. You might be able to borrow a guitar from someone just to try.
