  • We're expecting to find out the Government's position on the Ireland border this week.
The Sunday Telegraph reports that one of those proposals will involve offering free movement in and out of the UK to Irish citizens - a so-called "Schengen area" between the two countries.
But how would the changes affect those living on the border? Sky's Ireland correspondent David Blevins has been finding out.

maybe get your facts right Northern Ireland is part of the UK because the people of Northern Ireland want to be part of the UK, maybe try reading the good friday agreement before making untrue statements online btw i am from Northern Ireland i live here

@@PS-ru2ov but is ok to,ignore the fact that the people of Northern Ireland don’t want Brexit. Also the island as a whole voted in 1918 with a majority wanting to leave the UK but that was ignored and a Protestant protectorate was created. Look what happened after that and the troubleshot caused.

If the UK leaves the single market, its the EU law that requires the checks., Not the UK.
So I say to Irish people stop bothering the UK and stop seeing them as the problem going forward, We are where we are, its not going to go back, Make the EU sort this out, that is where your energy should be directed. that is the only Group that May not make compromises, Ireland will have to obey the EU, the UK does not and will not!

John Redwood's solution is easily the best, simplest and most effective. I can't see why people thought it was complicated. It deals with the problem of the border but effectively ensures trade continues and free movement of non-irish or British citizens ends.

All monitoring to be done by intercom and cameras from a special customs building.

The ease with which £425billion worth of goods passes in and out of Switzerland every year makes a mockery of the EU’s position that Northern Ireland might have to remain in the EU customs union while the rest of the UK leaves it.
Switzerland remains outside the customs union yet each day 2.1 million people, 1.1 million cars and 24,000 lorries cross the border, making it one of the busiest in Europe.
Running the Swiss digital frontier costs £639 million a year, a figure in stark contrast with the £20billion HM Revenue and Customs claimed a frictionless border might cost businesses in administration costs.
Switzerland’s economic and trade relations with the EU are governed by a series of bilateral agreements whereby the Swiss take control of certain aspects of EU legislation in exchange for accessing part of the single market.
Hardline Europhiles want the EU to apply standard customs checks to any goods coming into its customs union through the Irish Republic.
But at the Swiss border the process is seamless with a digital customs system which Brexiteers say could be replicated with ease in Northern Ireland.
For transit goods passing through Switzerland to the rest of Europe, vehicle and driver particulars are electronically verified at a border checkpoint.
Each driver has a smart card recording the load of the vehicle, weight and number of miles driven. The card is scanned at the checkpoint without the driver leaving his cab and takes a maximum of two and a half minutes.

The cost for EU members prior to the UK exit was 1% of GDP. That is now 1.15% of GDP. Hardly something to worry about. If Ireland pays more €, it's because our % GDP is increasing, which is a good sign.
As an Irish person, I have no problem paying more. Within the EU, Ireland has transformed itself from a poor agri economy (70% in 1970s : 4% in 2020s) to a wealthy Hi Tech nation (30% in 2020s). We received help when we needed it so it's only right we help other new members attain strong successful economies. The richer they become, the more money they have to purchase Irish & other EU goods & increase the money flow for all.

"they are required under EU law" 1:45 Why tf are we still complying to EU law if the main reason to leave the EU was to make our own laws and govern our own country. Who is actually going to implement this border if both the UK and Ireland are not in favour of the bored?! It just doesn't make sense. It is as if the UK are provoking or pushing the issue to further delay a decision made by the people. Hold a further referendum and this will further increase the divide and cause further violence within the UK (Pro brexit to win by a bigger vote also) .
