Brian, thank you for all you advice, I have fly fished over twenty years, taught many disadvantaged kids within a charity. Yet you and Flip have covered topics and method's I now look at differently, all my years and you have improved my fishing by taking away the "British" dogma of how to "do it", thank you both I have "exorcized" my "correct" and embrace your fishing is for ease, success catching fish and fun. Best wish's from the UK and keep making the videos.
Love your explanation of tippet taper to the leader for keeping the taper. On the last question. Mistake I've often made myself. Love how you really go into detail. Thanks
Wow, I've been tying on long bits of tippet to ultra short (well past their life) leaders and had no idea why it was such a bad idea. Thanks for explaining why it's so important to have the proper taper. I look forward to my casting and fly delivery to improve considerably. Cheers guys!
Get your hard hats ready! Mad River Outfitters is dropping some serious knowledge! Thanks. These videos, the channel, have really upped my fly fishing game!
Greetings from Bulgaria /Eastern Europe/. Your advice about buttoning up the rod was great. Now I am applying it in my practice and it works just great. Thank you so much!
Brian makes the best videos! always s easy to follow and approachable. Big kudos from a skinny little boy from Cleveland Ohio now fishing the rivers of Utah.
So helpful. The question on adding tippet to leader was exactly what I was wanting to know. Regularly adding tippet due to knots in my leader as I’m new to fly fishing and need to improve my casting. Your videos have been a massive help. Thank you.
that leader wrap on the rod is a great tip awesome thing to know.. i have been watching all of your leader videos.. I have now become a complete leader geek.. Leader is fascinating, i am dying to tie a few of my own from scratch.. like recipes i am collecting formulas. . where is the book man ... i gotta have one J
What a great question! I remember being yelled at all through the forest hiking with double hand spey rods out to the Sauk River with my 'date' who had me on the river learning db hand spey with HIS rods. Best personal ad dates I ever had except I was using his HIS rods. I kept thinking, boy, the fish certainly hear us coming! This was how he showed me to secure the rod and the line for marching through the forest and climbing over logs climbing under fences. He was a yeller! He also made beautiful flies that I wanted to wear as earrings. Oh, no, mon Cherie. Here are a pair of Orvis waders and felt boots instead! I'll never forget, "Take three steps" (upstream or was it downstream, arghhhh?) as soon as the cast landed. I was so overwhelmed to be making such a gorgeous cast circling around my head causing a cone of fluorescent green or orange that I'd hesitate which would cause more yelling.
Brian, tip to button up the rod especially while walking through woods. I’ve cut the wind knot out and tie the balance back on. Option, maybe keep the butt for a bass fly leader?
I've done this for years , regards wrapping the leader round the reel and back up to the second stripper . It's so much easier to get going again , or if you see a cruising fish . Keeper rings are indeed useless .
One more vote for the "End of the Line". I like the title but I'm thinking I'm going to like the content more. I'm glad that Brian doesn't care too much about my fly rod so when I show up with my 1960's Shakespeare Wonderod or Garcia Conlon rod he won't laugh at me. BTW do you guys know of any leader micrometers out there? I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere. Thanks for the video's guys. Keep the good stuff coming.
Is there a reason in the windknot tippet example why you wouldn't just cut out the knot/tangle and tie the residual to the butt? How many inches were so mangled they had to be trashed?
Hello I'm French fly Fisher I like your video and that you explain tipic us fly Technics. But I don't know why you use conic leaders I think leaders with knotts are more smoothies and permits more variations in spécial fly casts curves, plates, pose in packet, zigzag, clutch. And you wear nice shirts!!!
Brian, sorry but after 60 years of fly fishing and 45 years of guiding I still like hook keepers. No, I don't use them all the time BUT they are useful in certain situations and are a "quick fix" for hooking a fly Out-of-the-Way and will keep line and leader much more manageable than hooking to a stripping guide. I don't recommend for extened use especially when your leader is longer than your rod due to kinking. My 2 cents worth.
Rio gold line has a short front taper of 5 feet and Rio LT has a long front taper of 18 feet . So for dry fly presentation what and how long will be the best leader to rig on each fly line with such a different taper profile? Thank you
Thanks so much for tuning in friends! Thanks so much for your questions.
I’m going to look so cool when I show up to the river and just tap my rod to drop my fly. It’s the small things for me. Coolest tip I’ve seen, ever.

Yes. Thanks for watching.

Only if you know the stiffness and diameter of said butt.
When I learned that trick, my whole universe changed. This is like the theory of everything.

I use a small swivel made for fly fishing to prevent leader twisting by bulky flies.
Eric English We do too, as stated here. Thanks.

Thanks for watching.
Brian....Apologies if I missed a prior discussion on this subject, but WHO makes that shirt you are wearing? Thanks in advance!!!!
Most likely Howler Brothers but you'd have to check with him on that. He can be reached at the shop via e-mail or phone.
I wish I was grown enough not to laugh when I hear "stiffness in the butt section".
Thanks for these videos guys!
Thanks for watching.
can you guys make some more steelhead tip videos
Surely more coming?
So if I get a knot in my leader, it's best I cut it off and replace that part?
Michael Zartman Apparenly....yes. Feel free to contact the shop if they can help further. Thanks.
Now that’s a pro tip.
Or at least semi-pro. Thanks.
Always great info and love the presentation! Fish on!
Thanks so much for being here.
So the most important equipment of fly fishing is........? I would argue the leader system, 2nd important piece is fly line
Fly, leader, fly line....in that order. Although you'll hear Brian argue soon that it's a tie between the leader and the fly. Stay tuned.
Truly a good tip . Thanks
