The boy is her inner child. This video is about maintaining innocence. You can see a kid trying to enter a peep show where she's dancing and where people are getting off watching her but at the same time they feel guilty about it. They live in the marginal side of life. That represents decadence. On the other hand the boy represents innocence. A world under the sun where you can be free to be who you are, to be loved by who you are. So the boy represents her own innocence trying to survive in a world of fame and celebrity. If she lets him in it will be destroyed, but if she goes out with him she will be saved by it. So, in the end she chooses innocence over decadence and she escapes with the boy. It was a very controversial video at that time because of her kissing a little boy, but she explained that it wasn't a sexual thing, it was the kiss of innocence and complicity to her inner child almost like saying "I haven't forgotten about you". It`s so sweet. But yes, it was controversial.
yup! this was how this video was interpreted at the time it was released back in the day. sexual decadence vs innocence. she chose the latter in the end.
The boys Jake Is Felix Howard. He was 13 years old when he appeared un the video. He apparently couldn't get a proper work visa arrangement to tour with Madonna worldwide for her "Who's That Girl" tour, so California's Chris Finch replaced him for it. Felix meanwhile went on to play in bands and later become a songwriter, writing stuff for Amy Winehouse, Kylie Minogue, Holly Valance, and Beverly Knight. In March 2008 he was promoted to VP of A&R for EMI Music Publishing UK.
this is the first of several instances that madonna features the work of the late art deco painter tamara de lempicka. it's on the billboard in the opening minutes, and you may recall seeing a de lempicka in "vogue" and on the stage set of her blonde ambition tour. though overlooked by her critics, a good deal of madonna's work draws from "high art" - paintings, black-and-white photography, classic films, and religious iconography. i watched these videos as a kid but only grasped their sources of inspiration when i took art history courses in college.
That's because a lot of her critics have never taken the time to engage with high art or anything in this world that's beyond their own little section of reality. They just sit around criticizing things believing they know it all.
We'll keep requesting American Life Uncensored version till the end of time. pleease react to Sooner or Later from the OSCAR, YOU. GUYS. WILL. GAAAAG! And please do RAIN
I love your reactions, you 2 together are great. You remind me when I was becoming a Madonna fan, like watching the videos for the first time. Keep doing it! This song live from MDNA Tour is amazing, with another beat, I was in the Rio de Janeiro concert and it was amazing with heart shaped balloons in the audience.
No. This boy is Felix Howard. He wasn’t able to go on tour with her so she went with a different boy dancer instead, Chris Finch, who was a bit older. Chris later went on to have a teen single and then later left show biz.
The little boy is Felix Howard who was a very famous child model at this time and no, nobody complained about her kissing him, that's your generation that find this problematic.
I think she took the boy on tour with her. Who's that Girl Tour. It was contraversial at the time. She was accused of exploiting him. I am sure he was well looked after.
What a beautiful thing to see you guys react to this the way I did 30 years ago. One of you said " This is art" yup. Her dancing. The tone. That base line. The costume. The lighting.Mondino directed it. What a lovely thing to witness. You two seeing it for the first time. Priceless. X
I see the Open Your Heart video as a clear continuation from Papa Don't Preach. She kept the baby. The one Papa warned her all about, he ended up steppin' out... and now she's single with a child and bills to pay. The little boy does look like he was cast to be the son of the guy from the PDP video. Also the videos originally debuted in that order in the same year, 1986.
Great reaction guys. This video was directed by the same guy who directed Human Nature, Hollywood and Justify My Love that you have all reacted to. React to Express Yourself Truth or Dare so you can see her be extra
Love your reactions,Sooo glad that you've been reacting to the legendary Madonna, her music is the soundtrack to my life along with a couple of other legendary divas Debbie Harry & Kim Wilde. Keep up the amazing work👬🎵🌈you guys are awesome xx
You're cracking me up with the "back in those days" comment! Hahaha! I feel old now! I was so excited when this album came out. It was the first of Madonna's first "reinventions" and great song! As far as the child, no, people weren't up in arms about it. The video is meant to appreciate the innocence of a child :-)
I want to see you guys do Bye Bye Baby live from the Girlie Show Tour. Also, when Open Your Heart came out I was 6 and that boy in the video was my first crush.
I watched it when it first came out. I love it still because it's a timeless classic. Yes, there was a minor uproar over the kiss. Miguel Nunez explained the video's concept well. The kid was played by a model named Felix Howard. But the dancer in the Who's That Girl World Tour was Chris Finch who played his role from the video. Felix didn't have a work permit that allowed him to tour with Madonna. I love this song and video because the song is about unrequited love and the video was visually stunning and beautifully made. It was directed by Jean Baptiste Mondino who also directed her Justify My Love, Human Nature and Don't Tell Me videos.
Love your videos guys! I live for these Madonna reactions. On the kid and the kiss, that wasn’t a problem back then, we didn’t jump immediately to something bad. I think since then there has been so many child molestation, student teacher exposes, that it’s become way more top of mind. As a kid watching this, I saw myself as the kid - he was my in. I wanted to be Madonna’s friend, dance in her concerts, etc. I actually really like your interpretation that the kid wanted to be like Madonna, when you said it, it rang so true. It’s very innocent, in spite of the girlie show content (btw go watch that concert). Also - my parents I guess never had a problem with the strip show in this? I think we’ve all become bigger prudes since the 80’s.
If you haven’t already , I need you guys to watch her performance of like a virgin on the blonde ambition tour - she’s in a gold corset on a red velvet bed it’s literally iconic and sends chills down my spine - I grew up to her - I’m 40. Having her as our queen was like no other - you have no idea how exciting she was in the 90s. Please watch.
I love your reaction videos guys. They are amazing. I suggest you react to the “Cherish” video next. It’s one of my all-time favorites. I can’t wait to see how you react to that video. 👍🏻😉
This came out the year I was born and I honestly didn't see it for a long time. I think all her older music is pretty chill and some of it would totally work today. This was a good reaction
Eventho I wasn't even prolly born yet when this song came out , I grew up listening to all her hits her and Michael...my family used to always play her at gatherings 💯🤗I have so many childhood memories with 80s and 90s Madonna 😝
You can see the enormous imagination and creativity Madonna had. Madonna exhibited power, sexuality, style and piercing innovation. This video showcases Madonna as a glamorous dancer in front of a colorful cast of characters, including gays, at a time when it was considered highly controversial. Words can’t express. :) One of my favorite songs and videos.
Loved your reactions. The '80s was the decade of decadence. I was 16 when this video world premiered on MTV. Believe me, no one was fuming about Madonna kissing that boy. Well, maybe the Catholic church.🙂💜
I really enjoy when you cut the video in and out thirty forty times. Who really wants to watch there favorite parts anyway. Thanks boys, I'm going to sit in the car and play with the window till the battery runs out.....later
I remember there was a little controversy about the kiss back then. Just some write ups in the paper. Madonna was asked about it in an interview and she did say it wasn't a big deal and how it was about choosing innocence in the end.
Of course u heard it Dandy! Since u r a big Britney fan. One of her first movies Crossroads I believe it’s called? Britney’s character was lip syncing into a hairbrush in her bedroom to this very song if my memory is right
People saying that nobody complained about Madonna kissing a kid on his lips, aren't telling the truth. "Open Your Heart" was another Madonna video fuelling controversy. She was again the talk of the town and she was accused of perverting a young kid. There was much criticism way back in '86 and '87. Later that year she also worked with other kid for her "Who's That Girl" video and world tour and she also caused quite a stir for dancing sexy with the kid. "Open Your Heart" and "Who's That Girl" were both monster hits by Madonna reaching No. 1 in the United States. In the United Kingdom "Open Your Heart" peaked at 4 and "Who's That Girl" was another No. 1. Wherever you went, her songs were always on heavy rotation on the radio stations, music shops, big department stores and malls. The newest generations can't imagine how relevant Madonna was in the mid and late '80s and early '90s. Whatever she did or said was newsworthy and set the trend. Her work was always avant-gard and years ahead of her time. However, there were always people biased against whatever she did.
The video is about the contrast between child-like innocence and adult decadence. Madonna ultimately chooses innocence when she "escapes" the club with her young companion. This was Madonna's first collaboration with Jean-Baptiste Mondino who would go on to direct the videos for "Justify My Love," "Human Nature," "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," "Don't Tell Me," and "Hollywood." Some videos to react to: "Cherish" - Directed by photographer Herb Ritts; hunky mermen on a beach "Oh Father" - Directed by David Fincher (he also directed your fave "Vogue") "Bad Girl" - Directed by David Fincher (he also directed your fave "Vogue"); also stars Christopher Walken "Rain" - Sparse futuristic fashion meets an homage to Martha Graham "What It Feels Like for a Girl" - Directed by (then husband) Guy Ritchie; a dark adventure through the imagination of an elderly woman
So the boy went on the Whose that Girl tour with her... you should check out all of the tours... also your videos are not very loud.. i have my volume turned up and its still quite quiet.. Thanks. chaps. .lol.
Keep the good job! I have three suggestions : - vogue, from the Reinvention Tour - Holy Water/ Vogue, from Rebel Heart Tour - Girl Gone Wild, from the MDNA tour
Yes some people were fuming but the kiss wasn't a big of a deal as it probably would be now.. It's so fun to watch you guys see these videos I used to watch at 16 and 17 years old. Some of your reactions are a lot like how we were when these videos came out. Have you guys reacted to the Luck Star or Borderline videos? Those two videos were the first to put her on a national level. That's when she was a straight up NYC East Village girl. Quintessential Madonna.
"It was about innocence versus decadence really and in the end I chose innocence. I mean, that's what the child represented; you know, the childlike quality that everyone has, versus all the people in the club who sort of were jaded and decadent and depraved, you know - the other side of life that I'm interested in!" (Madonna, 1989)
Part of the on-boarding process for young gays should be watching Madonna videos. It not only shaped popular gay culture, it redefined pop music. Every single female star post 1980's is directly influenced by Madonna because she has done it ALL to the EXTREME!!!
Madonna is Italian American and her heritage and her father factor into a lot of her music hence the old man chasing after her saying “riturno (return)” in Italian.
Fun fact: This video was directed by her then-husband, Sean Penn. Edit: My bad. I Wiki-ed. Sean Penn was supposed to direct but the job ended up going to Jean-Baptiste Mondino. I was working on info from my childhood watching music video shows as my sisters would call out the most current trivia they’ve read from magazines about Madonna. Gosh darn facts came up waay slower to come by without the internet back then.
I love the guy to the left reaction when Madonna kissed the little boy . He knows it’s wrong and there’s no other way to put it . She’s 64 and her boyfriend is 28, so there ya have it .
I had just watched a video called "Madonna the story behind the song open your heart". The video featured the songs writer and he explained how the song was originally written for Cindy Lauper. At the end of the video he said the little boy is Leonardo DiCaprio before he was famous. Not sure if he was just saying that or if it's really true.
@@carterasics When I watched the video that I mention in my comment. when the song writer says at the end of that video it was Leo DiCaprio. I had one of those immediate thoughts of that's not Leonardo DiCaprio. Lol.
the litte boy was a dancer and went on the whos that girl world tour that i saw live in 1987, in wembley but look up caio italia madonna its the live concert from italy of the whos that girl tour, i think its the opening number
Actually, the boy in the video did not tour with her. Felix Howard is the name of the boy in the video. Chris Finch is the name of the boy who was on tour with her.
Please do reaction on Madonna Performing Sooner or Later at Academy Award. U guys will be so wanting to be like her. She's everything gurls ever imagine!
I was 13 when this record came out and I was visiting friends in Manchester where I bought it. It was my first vinyl album. The video was controversial at the time because of she kissing the little boy and guess what... that little boy is Leonardo DiCaprio.
The dancing is restrained with a single prop: that of a solitary chair. At one point in the first segment of the video, she is filmed dancing but the camera is almost still and the motions of the dance are confined within the small range of the camera. As the screens inside the viewing booths open and close, the camera slices the shots of Madonna each with its own angle and duration. The same imagery is exhibited by the little boy outside who tries to frame Madonna's playbill image into different angles.[45] There are four other men in the booths who are made of wood with paintings of artist Tamara de Lempicka on them. Madonna at one point takes off her gloves like Rita Hayworth in Gilda and points towards one of the wooden paintings. It collapses and she blows on her finger.[44] The video is similar in thematic content to Mötley Crüe's video for the single "Girls, Girls, Girls". But in contrast, this video tells the story from Madonna's point of view. She looks down into the cubicles to make eye contact with the men but they are unable to return it.[46] She also looks assertively into the camera, making eye contact with the viewer. With these scenes Madonna portrays her holding power over the men and the ability to pursue them. Madonna represents an assertive woman searching for a lover who can accept her as a human being. Author Bruce Forbes notes that the men in the cubicles are proved unworthy of her and there is an undertone of mockery when Madonna addresses them as 'baby' while shaking her body.[46] By the end of the video the isolated and sad men depart with the doors closing on them. As the final chorus breaks into dance grooves, Madonna comes out of the theater and gives the boy a quick kiss on his lips. Both are clad in loose-fitting gray suits, which gives Madonna an androgynous look. They stroll away playfully in the sunrise, reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin and Jack Coogan in The Kid with the old boss pursuing them and shouting "Come back, come back, we still need you" in Italian.[44][46] The tension between the visual and the musical dimensions of the video is extremely unsettling according to author Nicholas B. Dirks. Only when she disappears from the carousel and reappears to run away from her patriarchal boss with the young boy, then the music and visuals become comparable. Wikipedia
I’ll keep trying requesting “Future Lovers/I Feel Love” Confessions Tour! It’s a MUST WATCH! Also react to “Into the groove” Sticky & Sweet tour: the choreography is everything.
The next year Madonna embarked on the who’s that girl tour: please react to causing a commotion and into the groove performances from the Ciao Italia vhs
Hey guys, please react to the America PIE music video, I also recommend Beautiful Stranger! Both songs were released within a year from each other, and were part of the soundtrack for films that were released the same year.
The entrance of the club has an illustration of a painting of Tamara de Lempicka a bisexual artist madonna loves. By the way Madonna owns the original painting.

My favorite Madonna song EVER!! Pure and innocent! Her inner child.
The kiss was not a big deal back then. Not at all.
Yeah because it was innocent and cute.
Exactly. People didn't get so bent out of shape over nothing.
Exactly!
No, it wasn't, today everything is a thing, pfff.
It was a big deal. The media shouted „Seducing a minor“
You cannot take things so literally 😜. The boy is innocence. She leaves the club behind and re-embraces her innocence.

- Holy Water/ Vogue, from Rebel Heart Tour
- Girl Gone Wild, from the MDNA tour
Yes some people were fuming but the kiss wasn't a big of a deal as it probably would be now.. It's so fun to watch you guys see these videos I used to watch at 16 and 17 years old. Some of your reactions are a lot like how we were when these videos came out. Have you guys reacted to the Luck Star or Borderline videos? Those two videos were the first to put her on a national level. That's when she was a straight up NYC East Village girl. Quintessential Madonna.
I really love this music .. In my Top 10 Madonna’s songs .. 🌹💋
Okay boys it's time to step up to the big leagues and react to Madonnas first major movie role.. In. Desperately Seeking Susan.
I love love love your reactions. Please react to Deeper and Deeper by Madonna . Either the video or Deeper and Deeper Rebel Heart Tour Pleaseeee.
New subscriber, big fan
Please react to “What It Feels Like For A Girl”, one of her most controversial videos ever that was banned by mtv when it came out!
I cannot believe 2 gay men haven't seen a Madonna's video yet... Damn I must be old...
I live for you guys!
I love the guy to the left reaction when Madonna kissed the little boy . He knows it’s wrong and there’s no other way to put it . She’s 64 and her boyfriend is 28, so there ya have it .
I had just watched a video called
"Madonna the story behind the song open your heart".
The video featured the songs writer and he explained how the song was originally written for Cindy Lauper. At the end of the video he said the little boy is Leonardo DiCaprio before he was famous. Not sure if he was just saying that or if it's really true.
The kids name is Felix Howard
@@carterasics When I watched the video that I mention in my comment. when the song writer says at the end of that video it was Leo DiCaprio. I had one of those immediate thoughts of
that's not Leonardo DiCaprio. Lol.
You two should really check out the video for Bad Girl. It's like a little movie and possibly my favorite Madonna video.
You really need to watch the POSE series! You will learn so much about the world in late 80's and early 90's
This song was #01 in Hot 100
the litte boy was a dancer and went on the whos that girl world tour that i saw live in 1987, in wembley but look up caio italia madonna its the live concert from italy of the whos that girl tour, i think its the opening number
That boy was on her “Who’s that Girl “concert too.
She did have a boy on her 'Who's that Girl" Tour, but it was a different boy.
It collapses and she blows on her finger.[44]
The video is similar in thematic content to Mötley Crüe's video for the single "Girls, Girls, Girls". Author Bruce Forbes notes that the men in the cubicles are proved unworthy of her and there is an undertone of mockery when Madonna addresses them as 'baby' while shaking her body.[46]
By the end of the video the isolated and sad men depart with the doors closing on them. Wikipedia

React to "La isla bonita" of Madonna is the most popular song of all the times
The entrance of the club has an illustration of a painting of Tamara de Lempicka a bisexual artist madonna loves. By the way Madonna owns the original painting.
