Lord Jonathan Sumption is a celebrated historian, barrister, and emeritus judge of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. After teaching and researching in medieval history at Oxford University, he pursued an astonishingly successful legal career which resulted in his appointment to the Supreme Court. While practising as a lawyer, Sumption wrote celebrated works of medieval history, most notably four volumes of a planned five-volume history of the Hundred Years’ War.
Sumption has weighed into public debate over many years, most recently regarding COVID policies in the UK and the demonisation of Western history, particularly since the BLM protests and riots in 2020. His most recent books are Trials of the State: Law and the Decline of Politics and Law in a Time of Crisis.

Lord Sumption has an incredible intellect and ability to communicate with calm measured reason, logic and clarity. Excellent interview.
That’s funny because if he was so principled he would have brought a claim for judicial review against the government himself and ended the madness 1 year earlier.
Its simple, Sumption ran off with his massive judicial pension and is now pretending to be one of us to sell his books because his core audience of solicitors and barristers is tiny.
Its always about the book sales with these elites.

Sumption is an absolute treasure. I had read three volumes of his excellent hundred years war history before I realised the extent of his legal career. Cannot wait for the last chapter and, as always, an insightful interview from a channel that keeps delivering. Well done John.

Lord Sumption was a cherished voice of reason throughout the Covid debacle.
What Lord Sumption had to say about the COVID debacle in this conversation was extremely wise. During that nightmare, did his comments have any impact upon the political decisions and the citizenry views in the UK? Or, was it just always good to hear his reason and wisdom amongst the many voices of lunacy? He surely speaks with authority and it would seem to me that he couldn't be ignored. I'm American and wish we had Lord Sumption's voice heard here. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his opinions on the precarious issues of "Rule of Law" and where within certain areas, like the U.S. Supreme Court, pitfalls lurk.

Sorry he's just a Malthusian globalist. He's even joined the climate cult.
He was and regardless of his other views I think Ill always have time for him because of it. I love that he says; Denying people physical interaction was a profoundly wicked thing to do and that it was done by perfectly ordinary(if scared) human beings, it would be highly beneficial is this was drilled in to skull of everyone on the planet. Collectively we did not act reasonably but there remains scant public recognition of this and its a dangerous state of affairs top leave it this way.

I think I speak for many when I say that we want a return to a rule of law that applies to everyone - a law that is clear and effective fair and honorable. We are evidently drifting away from this in all the Western nations - it can't end well.

Even in the UK it's an ideal that never really existed in any meaningful way. You only have to look at the slew of wrongful executions that be brought the capital punishment laws crashing down in the 1960s, Bloody Sunday or the Hillsborough debacle, which took decades to unravel the truth. As my late father used to say "just assume that anyone and everyone above you in the social hierarchy is a crook".

Lord Kenneth Clark in his epic series "Civilisation" said that the one thing above all else that he considered defined civilisation was courtesy, these two gentle-men have demonstrated that to be true not just from this interview but in how they have tried to live their wider lives. We would all do well to contemplate this. You win more friends with sugar than you do with vinegar as the old saying goes.

Great interview John, I could see by your reaction to a number of questions you put to Lord Sumpton that you probably disagreed with him. That’s not a bad thing and it’s refreshing to see the interviewer allowing the interviewee to answer with their opinion without interruption. The good thing with interviewing someone like Jonathon Sumpton is he isn’t a politician with an axe to grind and actually answers the question put to him and then shuts up to wait for the next one.
During your short time in the UK you’ve managed to land interviews with three people I regard as massive personal political influences, who are otherwise largely ignored. Thank you. If only Sir Roger Scruton were still with us he’d have been the perfect addition.

Lord Sumption is something else: full on erudition. Incredible, thought-provoking interview. Our world needs much more of this.
He, like Peter Hitchens, are as learned Englishmen once were. They are relics of a past we should cherish. This old blood and degree of culture runs thin, sadly.

Their emphasis on a knowledge of history, on the institutions of government and the need for citizens to constantly be on their guard against the erosion of individual liberties are matters we should all support. Sadly, as they point out, the tendency is increasingly for people to become disillusioned with the political process and thereby leave the field clear for the unscrupulous politician. Mr. Sumption is a national treasure - indeed a treasure to all English-speaking peoples. I really came to admire him when I read his book Pilgrimage, which is fascinating history of Europe in the Middle Ages, focusing on how people travelled, and for what reasons.
I don’t always agree with Lord Sumption but I do ALWAYS want to hear what he has to say.

I particularly admired Lord Sumption’s argument against proposed laws that are attempting to curtail free speech: “Nobody is entitled to intellectual safety, nobody is entitled not to have there fundamental and cherished views challenged… All knowledge, all opinion is provisional until something more persuasive comes along, if we shut down the persuasive process we will stop advancing.” The concept of “hate speech” is so subjective, so open to political bias, that it’s very terminology becomes Orwellian. If we care about making the world a better place, we should fight for this cherished freedom.
Some hate speech is more equal than others.
The Hate speech laws MUST be abolished. They don't seem to apply to the inhabitants of our "No-Go zones". The law isn't equally applied.

Really enjoyable interview, with an excellent array of topics. I have been a supporter of Lord Sumption for quite some time. I have read all his books, except for Book 5 of his series on the Hundred Years War. ( Loved your Sitting Room Lord Sumption. It's soooo beautiful.)
Another great interview with a great interviewee. However, I would welcome at some stage to hear both their views on why Climate Change scientists who dispute the mainstream narrative are banned from BBC, MSM, most educational institutions, etc., as was the case with eminent scientists during the Covid pandemic. Why isn't freedom of speech encouraged on what Lord Sumption believes is the main negative event faced by mankind.

What a cracking interview. Great points and measured, reasonable responses. Hopefully the current and future lawmakers will take his views into account as they create the societies of the future.
On law, Supreme Courts and history (the greatest store of vicarious knowledge available), very good. On climate change, a disappointing, (I believe), falsely premised position. Climate has always changed on Earth, always will, and other than city heat dome conduction (warming, without which we of the temperate & frigid latitudes wouldn't survive), our Co2 waste has precious little to do with it, but conversely, everything to do with plant & crop growth, and the current, overall greening of Earth.
On government responses (despot over-reaction) to COVID, full agreement, as with (on) those attacking our history. Thank you John.

I would suggest that it is not climate change that is the threat to our environment, but particle pollution with physical waste and with harmful industrial scale chemicals - the focus on CO2 is surely far more based on political-financial- motivation than on actual environmental impact -
In 1952 communists published a book lamenting that whilst the working class had access to the comforts of Affordable electricity they would never overthrow the means of production in classic Marxist theory. I find that an interesting starting point.

Great video. Just three comments. Lord Sumption is, as always, profoundly erudite and level headed in his approach to subjects. Second, the profoundly "wicked things" these people have been ignorantly imposing on society can be seen as a variation on Hanna Arendt's "the banality of evil". Finally, where I stray significantly from the Lord's view, is that as far as the political class goes I am not in agreement with the opinion that they are more likely to debate issues with a higher degree of knowledge and experience since, as the knowledge and experience of the electorate is eroded by our failing institutions of higher learning, more and more cynical and ignorant demagogues come to dominate the political class to the point where what occurs in the august halls of legislation can be described as anything but debate. Maybe there is still hope in the UK but I live in Canada and I watch parliament. To paraphrase Shakespeare, all I see are tales told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. In my view, almost any form of representative government would rise above the abysmal levels of legislative competence that we have sunk to.

36:51 - if indeed climate change is largely a result of human actions, how do we explain the many instances of climate change that have occurred in earth’s past, long before the Industrial Revolution? We may indeed contribute to *global warming* in greater or lesser degree, and there is always a reason to live in greater harmony with nature with a greater sense of gratitude and responsibility, but the idea that human actions _cause_ ‘climate change’ seems suspect.

I’ve not followed Sumption, I did see in one interview though, discussing Brexit, about six months ago - he used the term ‘anti European’ to describe Leave (really those who stand for what Hazony calls the political order of independent national states); unfortunately he didn’t get corrected. It may seem like a small thing but it’s totally unacceptable! The stakes are exceedingly high and we, who defend the nation state, need to be emphatic and unequivocal on this distinction, for it is a very, VERY serious one, the Judeo-Christian west, indeed secular western civilisation is riding on it.
And what about the referendum when the British people voted to leave the EU, apparently the Supreme Court didn't care about that or about being party to that referendum decision taking about 4 years to be implemented, if I remember right
The issue there is that referendums have never had a place in the British constitution, and the 2015 Referendum Act merely allowed a referendum without addressing that, leaving the question of when/whether and how to implement the result for legislature and executive, with the courts uncomfortably playing the role of adjudicator.
Activist Courts have been meddling in "law making" for years yet when we actually needed Courts to intervene with govts covid overeach on our fundamental rights & at least in UK Canada Australia NZ they completely failed to stand up

No it is great that the US keeps the abortion debate in the spotlight. No one ever considers the fact that the woman has to live with her decision for the rest of her life. Always wondering what that child would gave been like. Abortion is a cruel infliction on women and the baby. We have never had a truly honest and open debate about abortion in the U.K. it’s misconstrued as a woman’s right, yet it hurts women most. I say this as a liberal person.
I'm a male (56) and I feet great guilt at my callous insistence at age 22 that my girlfriend of the time get an abortion, which she did. That guilt and regret affected my ability to form relationships in my life so I can only imagine how much worse it must be for a woman?
Whatever happened to being a 'Statesman'? I think we need a system that filters out ego and self interest and forces those elected to do the will of the people whilst safeguarding human rights. We don't need a 'professional' political class, we need our peers on limited term timeframes that get a 'credit' score. As for England, it lost the battle during independence day in the USA. Whilst I respect Lord Sumption immensely, and trust most of his judgments - the point is the political class needs to be reigned in by the courts and also accountable for its failed public policy that require the attention of the courts. Why are public servants and bureaucracies able to become the modern day vexatious litigants.

It is something that needs to be addressed in a balanced and measured way that can be positive for the environment and not too negative on people or their living standards

"...what we need is a large number of the general public who feel enough about politics to participate..." That is exactly what we saw with the Brexit vote and yet we saw a concerted attempt by the political class to reverse that vote. The rights or wrongs of the Brexit vote aside, how many of those people who voted (many, many for the first time in years) will never bother again Lord Sumption?
Thank you for this great interview. I do think that all science must be peer reviewed as it has always been. This should be the same for climate change, we need to hear the scientists that have and can prove there is no climate emergency.

A hybrid form of Representative and Direct Democracy that should be considered is where the Senate is replaced by direct voting by the public every quarter. The Lower is still elected and still draft and vote on legislation which then put to the public to vote on electronically using our online Electoral Commission usernames. The government would be required to provide a short summary of each of the legislations they wish to introduce/change and the rationale; the opposition (as well as any minor party within the parliament who wished to) would be required to provide a short summary of their opposition or support; and a link to the question-time debate would also be provided. It would not be a legal requirement for the public to vote, so this would be a simple majority vote wins.
Well… economic success could be at least far more long term and more stable were it not for the political class and their agendas disrupting and destroying economic successes of previous generations with their endless rules and manipulations and meddling and enforcing of non-sensible laws -

Conservatism, politically, needs to be brought back to text book conservatism in the face of the urge for unbridled capitalism, or at least, capitalism without ethics & wholistic aspect & long-term view.
Laws can't & don't change hearts or develop character where ideas, proposals & change can be communicated, and disagreement doesn't require 'cancellation'.
The divisions that have been laid like wires across so many aspects, elicit a response of presumption of another's position or polarization.. that is one item that needs to be the new 'woke', to rouse ourselves from reactionism and assuming an opponent on a topic.

There is a middle way between current representative democracy and direct democracy. In other words, current representative democracy can be significantly improved by analyzing its weaknesses and provisioning remedies. This would mean further splitting of power, providing for checks and balances for activism, preventing corruption, improving subsidiarity. This should create a more homogeneous political class and provide for optimal balance while improving representativity at the same time.

Too many people seem to miss the distinction between minutely increased CO2 in the atmosphere and a fraction of a degree averagely higher temperature ( but still far lower than during some recent historical phases ) as a threat, and particle pollution from physical waste and industrial scale harmful chemicals accumulating in the environment as a threat - the former hardly is one, the latter certainly can be much improved - but the focus on CO2 surely is motivated by political-financial special-interests, not by true concern for ‘improvement’ of the climate -

There are also laws put in place to protect people from religiously un stunned meat and yet from 1932 when the Jewish community were given an exemption, which made it clear the meat from this practice was for the Jewish people only but still today as Jewish people only eat the front end of the carcass, they openly off load the rear ends on to the national meat market, with no prosecutions. So it would appear that certain laws which are applied to certain groups are ignored. Why?

I would have liked to hear why he thinks climate change is such a problem. It's become obvious to many lately that science has been corrupted by politics. I think the first field of science that was corrupted was climate science.
