  • View from the rear of Amtrak Train 43, the westbound Pennsylvanian, as it travels on the former PRR Main Line between Altoona and Johnstown, PA over the world famous Horseshoe Curve (9:00)
After passing MG tower (12:00) the train crests the summit of the PRR at Galitzin (20:00) the train passes through Cresson and CP-MO (25:00) where the engineer pegs the throttle, accelerating the train to 80mph.
A short while later (31:00) Train 43 overtakes NS freight 20G on track 3, which the Pennsylvanian had been stuck behind all the way across the Middle Division.
The NS Pittsburgh Line is currently in the process of being re-signaled to Rule 562 operation and NS style color lights :-(

Love your videos. No hurky jerky camera movements, no zooming in & out. Just straight pure railroad enjoyment. Thank you for all the videos you do. Cheers from Canada.

Well the non-GoPro ones sometimes have zooming due to the presence of interesting signals or issues with a dirty window.

Really nice job Jersey Mike, as always! I see you got M-2 over the Curve... I was following along with the track charts all the way!

Nice video again, as usual --- I much prefer the rear view, this is where I always rode on a train. I'm showing my age, but I remember this stretch when it was all 4 track main, and the passenger cars were all Tuscan Red, and in Harrisburg a GG-1 took us to the City (New York). I rode mainly the Juniata and the Manhattan Limited ----- was too cheap to pay for the Broadway Limited. Keep up the great filming! When will you film the LIRR from KO to GY?????

Thx for the ride along. Not very scenic, but fun anyway.

At 19:07 you can see the branch off to what was once known as "Muleshoe Curve".

the portion of the pittsburgh line between altoona and gallitzin has a steep railroad grade which is why trains on this portion of the line go slow, once they get past gallitzin which is located at the top of the grade and the line's railroad grade is a lot less steep as it heads downgrade towards johnstown then travel speed increases from there

recall when working on conrail a rail train ran away going down the east slope took horseshoe curve at 60 mph did not get stooped until it reached antis all the brake shoes were burnt off the flat cars, cause was excessive piston travel on the flat cars, i am sure a few car inspectors at pitcarin got fired over this as they are the ones who gave that train the air brake inspection.

I think they should have kept Alto open as the eventual "last of the last" manned tower. It wouldn't have bankrupted the railroad to do that.
