FATHER-IN-LAW TILED SHOWER AND IT FAILED!!!

- Too often I see family members, friends, or neighbors try to do tile work and fail. They may have good intentions but they don't have the knowledge or skill to build a properly waterproof tiled shower. Homeowners who need tile work done are often in a bind because they don't have the money to pay for a qualified tile installer. The result is usually a disaster, and can lead to water damage, mold, and dry rot causing thousands more in damage.
To see more videos on how to properly tile a shower, floor, or backsplash subscribe and turn on your notifications. I upload videos every Thursday at 6pm. Usually a tutorial on how to properly tile a shower, or a video showing what happens and what went wrong on a bad installation. I even show my own company's issues and problems that arise since I know it will help others.
My goal is to provide educational, motivational, and entertaining videos that help others get better and improve their lives through building and creating.

Heartbreaking for the guy. Really nice of him to let this be filmed, I really hope everything works out for him.
He needs a drink. As would I.
no damage was done to the structure at least as the problems were spotted early.
As a DIY’er these videos make me feel really good about the quality of work I do.
When I was a kid, my dad rewired most of the electrical in our 100 y/o house (in a small town) from 'knob&post' .... then had the inspector come out. Inspector said, ".... you must not be an electrician from around here ... you did everything by the books, no cut corners ... have you thought of doing this for a living?" LOL! Dad had done some electrical work in the military ... so there's that ..... DIY'ers sometimes get their experience from other places besides "the industry."
As a DIYer doing my first shower right now, I'm terrified!
This is true! The other thing is DIY we are doing it for ourselves and our own home, and time is not money for us like it is for a commercial contractor and we don't have to cut corners when it comes to time and careful work, and are too scared to cut corners because we are not sure what is critical and what is just important!
@@GarrickStaples how’d your project turn out?
@@jw1731 it's lovely! It's been in daily use for a few months and no problems so far!
Feel so bad for the home owner. We've all been in this position brother with one project or another. Live and learn and move forward smarter. Chin up my man, it'll get better.
You're a real pro. It was quite obvious within ten seconds of walking in there you knew it was no good, but you heard him out and listened and told him you would do a full evaluation. Nice to see
Man that guy was devastated you can see he's body posture and facial expression at the end I feel bad for him. Yes you are right a lot of home owners/anyone think because there's a lot of videos out there a trowel and mastic will get the job done.
The hardest part of doing tile is the prep work, back when I started it I wasn't aloud to set tile till I learned how to prep and went through the proper stages. It's been over 10 years now and still you never stop learning.
this guy got off easy, imagine if he found out his father in-law did a bad job 2 years later because everyone is getting sick from black mold and the integrity of his house has been compromised.
@@ThreeSixFour indeed and like coach said hourly prices are crazy for the same reason but a video makes everything look like eating ice cream.
The encouraging thing is the father in law only tiles one shower every 20 years. Lol. Lord bless father in law and Patrick and family. John3:16.
Don't ever involve yourself in situations where you are dealing with money or work with family or friends. Rarely works out
No Doubt!!!
And if you do....treat them like a customer
I liked your professional approach on evaluation situation!
That transition into the true work gear ad was flawless.
I've done so many jobs that started exactly like that. Where the home owner or family members tried doing it. When they would call me, I would have to do pretty much the same thing your doing . Alot of times people do not understand how much money it costs to get tile work done. They think "if they just buy the tile"
Great video man. I do not think you have put out a video i haven't liked.
You've been critiquing jobs done by others with an open and neutral composure. That's a very amiable show of character. I dunno how you can restrain emotions of frustration / disbelief while doing these inspections. Well Done, Sir.
Just thinking, this was a really good educational video. I believe it has helped many of us DIYers. Thank you
Your videos are so valuable and thoughtful, thank you for taking so much time to provide this to the world. Seriously, this is effort you don't need to spend on the rest of us. I LOVED the recap showing what was right and what was wrong!!!! That's incredible, please keep doing that!! Love you too man.
Darn! He edited out the best part where the dude is looking heartbroken by the bad news while he plugged his merch. That had me rolling!
The visual and edit quality of this video is your best by far. Really top notch!
Tile coach: can I pull a few tiles?
Owner: sure!
Owner comes back and sees the demo, gets a heart attack.
Mastic in a shower,, come on man! Absolutely you don't have the knowledge to show someone how it was done wrong!!
Awesome.
Hard to find honesty now a days.
God bless you.
As a carpenter your use of that wood chisel is really killing me. Haha. Nice vid
He probably using a Harbor Freight chisel
To a tile guy it's just a chisel 😂🤣
Been doing tile for 25 years and I'll only use wood chisels. Nothing takes out stubborn thinset when you're doing repairs like a sharp wood chisel. Of course it only works for about 10 minutes before you dull the shit out of it, but for those 10 minutes, it chews through the stuff.
@@chuckyufarley2999 i also weeped when i saw his using a chisel
Hahaha I use them al the time they work perfect 😈😈😈😈
I had never thought of mastik on a shower. I'm glad. I have never used it at all.
I done a tiling job for my sister 24 years ago. And my brother in law said that I did a top job. The tiles look as new as when they were done. Iv done a few hundred shower rooms since then. But then I was new in the tiling game. It’s important to use the right product for fixing the tiles. And good quality grout. I used the same grout they use in swimming pools. I’d like to learn how to do 3 d tiling. Iv got my own shower room to do soon. It’s good to watch these videos. I hope it don’t cost Patrick a huge amount to put it right.
“Is it cool if I pull a few tiles?”
*demos half the shower
I was yelling "STOP!!!" at my screen. lol. I mean, he's right, it needs to come out, but if you ask a guy to come and take a look, you probably don't want to walk in to find everything torn up.
Was thinking the same... no going back now.
He pulled the tiles mostly with his fingers or with pretty minimal effort. The tiles likely would have fallen off in a couple of months of use, no joke. My bathroom floor was tiled with luan and mastic, and I popped all the tiles off in 20 minutes with a 5 in 1 tool.
He is doing him a favor, those tiles needed to be removed anyway
I’m aware those tiles needed to come out and the shower would have failed in a matter of months. I was making a joke. Welcome to the internet.
Please tape a part 2 or 3 to this and follow up. Id like to see the process of doing it right. There are plenty of high end showers done on your channel and sal's.
Yes.
He's not doing crap with this shower, the guy only wanted his advice, he can't afford him. It would be charity work if he did. 100$ an hour labor plus material
Yes
Patrick aka Anthony made a great decision to call you in. He was in a little over his head. Think of the mold he or his children would've been breathing. At least they didn't spend money on shower glass yet. This could've been so so much worse.
As a DIY’er my rule is watch as much tutorial videos as much as possible and while doing the project, its when in doubt, watch more videos.
Same here, I've DIYed my bathroom, tile, waterproofing, etc. And my best piece of advice, watch multiple tile videos, from multiple channels, not just one, and also, sort the comments for the newest ones to see what people are saying.
I like that Not a Bad Neighborhood,just a little bit different.!👍😏
Kudos to the homeowner for owning his error. That’s hard to do
"this was probably ok 20 years ago" ... "yeah....yeah".....no
Drywall was all they used back then, some people still do it which is bound to fail, drywall and water equals black mold
@@JakeG314 Yep. In-laws shower they just glued it to the drywall. The whole subdivision. 1960's.
@@JakeG314 Well if the house is older and the walls are made of real plaster, not drywall, it is probably fine.
You can just put kerdi on top and it's fine
"let me see if the shower liner is proper" and puts his chisel through it LOL
"it was pretty good"
Dude wrecks it and doesn’t even fix it. Wow.
I restore tile and grout for a living. We get so many calls for shower repair and many of them are newer homes. Now I see why.
I really appreciate it that you build rapport with the customers
"This is expensive stuff" he says after he destroys this man's liner he paid for to have done.
Done very very very horribly!
I'm starting to think all shower and tub installations should be recorded from beginning to end and saved for 20 years for future reference.
Well the bright side is, that with care most of that tile can be salvaged and reapplied once the structure is done properly. Better to have to redo the basic waterproofing than to have to replace a rotten structure had they not stopped.
Haha that’s not happening… look how dirty they are waste of time
you're like a DIY detective. Love seeing the mistakes uncovered
Mastic? Just watched a video by the only other tile installer I trust (Sal), he said and I quote "if it comes in a bucket, stop and walk away". Don"t ever watch any other installers besides you and Sal because...well because I am trying to learn the correct way to tile.
Wow, have never seen a worse install. That would have been a hot mess after a few weeks of use.
Man some red guard and backer board would have saved this guy a lot of time and money.
Appreciate these knowledgeable videos like Sal Starrtile now you are my top 3 which are good refresher videos from my home depot Black and Decker all in on DIY BOOKS 30 years ago which i still have LOL. THESE videos I share often to my friends and family where you give them the breakdown on ballpark PRICE/hourly, needed materials and skillset to achieve a well built shower or bath which I am commonly asked all the the time! Thanks for sharing been watching you since you were low in Subs! Keep them coming! Unfortunate for this one but thanks for sharing coming from a professional i to will show my pops and other who can't visualize don't understand what may occur if done incorrectly which explain very well only if can translate your vids in other languages that is another story which would be helpful also!
Starr tile is a hack. Stop watching him
@@michaelcarton3299
I know what you mean. I don't use Georgia code just some of his techniques not his preferred material which leans to the old school. California standards is the way to go. Sal Diabasi is a beast in the trade my go 2 and now Tile coach who does a fabulous job in sharing his findings on products i used in the past and now in the present which i found useful information!
@@bcruzin28 I'll second the motion to ignore Starr tile. His info is contradictory and just plain wrong. He doesn't follow Georgia or any other code. Stick with Sal, Isaac, Jason Morgan and if you like beautiful women, Nassarin's DIY has a good series on a quality shower build.
Never associate Isaac and Sal with a hack like Starr tile
I've done a lot of bathrooms, taken over jobs, and seen homeowner work here in Mich. this kind of work is no surprise. 😞😞😞
You guys know there's no "father in-law," right?
Hes had a few if them of them .He's a keen DIYer but rarely fishes a job.5 Father I laws he's had
Guy did his own work poorly and blamed his invincible father in law.
Haha my “father in law” nice one
what a bummer...liked the look he had going tho....seen the mastic in the shower failures way too many times...
Nice video. Good examples of what not to do
Saved him $$$$ in all reality. Imagine one of those tiles falling off and smashing/cutting some toes
Or water damage through the whole bathroom lol
The whole shower needs redone. Waterproofing the shower most important thing in a walkinn shower
Exactly ! This is what those idiot installers didnt understand. And a lot of these commenters also dont understand either.
Cement board should have been used then Kerdi line it for starters and no wood or Drywall.
Homeowner is very smart to have educated himself a bit, and that he called you. Overall bathroom design is nice.
Good job bro, really like your videos. It's crazy after 24 years how much hackery done and could of been solved with a little knowledge and time just searching or wanting to do the right thing. I'm in Missouri with no accountability being held over these "contractors" or "professionals " I see it all pretty much daily. Got one going to court soon helping a homeowner ....but courts are not the best solution, not fair for the homeowners really. Anyway, thank you and your team for your videos. Currently stopped using power grout on shower floor tile and went to spectralock1 because of the info in your vids man. Thanks again
Bryan, Owner - Grable Tile - Springfield Missouri.
Shoot here in Texas any Mexican with a trowel is considered a tile installer
Your edit guy made me laugh when he slow motioned you taking of your Jacket.Wooooowhoooo.!.singles r ready.
Im like...wtf...is this a dating commercial its getting weird
Wow, that was definitely a disaster in progress
God-awful tile! What were they thinking? With that mastic barely holding on the tiles, I'd rip it all out, budget or no budget.
So sad. I feel his pain. That's why it's super important to read labels and instruction.
Anthony was very angry when he saw how Isaac destroyed his bathroom.
He was so angry he could barely speak.
How was this isaacs fault?? This was the people who did the job from beginning
Negative
Dino its all crap/Wrong, it all should come out.
He wasn't angry man was seconds from tears, he was fuckin upset he had all his money in tile ruined by his father in law with shoddy work
You can save the tiles. Muratic acid. 3 tubs. Soak once rinse with hose go to 2nd soak and so on. Soak over night to 20 hours. I just did 400 square feet of tile.
That tile design is hideous looking.
Yup, I thought it was mortar or grout not cleaned probably. Really ugly.
"yea everything was going good and then my father in law started smearing his poop all over the tiles and I thought I should get a professional"
I agree that barn wood look is funky
That’s scary... I have issue with grout sealer am using miracle and tile grout sealer but doesn’t seem to keep water out it soaks it’s my first shower and I see allot of your videos you help allot man it would been nice if his father in law found your video tile coach👍
Grout sealer doesn't stop grout from absorbing water
About 15 years ago we went to a homeowners house similar to the situation but the bathroom was about six times the size. They use that same Home Depot mastic bullshit. I took every single tile off the bathroom with a five and one. I saved every single tile because the homeowner wanted to do something different afterward. Not one tile even cracked or chipped during removal, they peeled right off.
These are fantastic videos. Gonna help me out not to make these mistakes once I get started =)
I’m a tiler in the uk with over 25 years experience, ‘ I know it’s personal preference but just looking at the tile & obviously without being able to see the tiles edge properly, to keep that rustic look I probably wouldn’t of used trim
So what is behind the liner, just the studs? And how does liner get held in place without putting nails or what holds it thanks
when u said yea yea and agreed it was ok 20 years ago to put it on textured drywall it shows u have a pure heart. Love u. God bless in Jesus name. My first thought was nope not even 100 years ago hah jk.
I thought this was your father in law from the title. I was like "Wow, your son-in-law is a tiling contractor and you didn't ask for any help? Talk about pride!". Was wrong instantly. Oops.
Oh, my heart hurts for this guy. Even for the father in law. He tried to help, but really shouldn’t have. I’m sure he feels terrible for putting his family in that position. Hope they can afford to have that done right. If you’re gonna DIY, make sure you know WTF you’re doing and using the right materials & products for the job! Ugh This sucks, big time 😢💔
🤯 how easy those tiles come off. I'm finishing walls full room to ceiling at the moment and it's way harder to get tiles off than than when the glues wet 🤣
Glad I went with a class 2 bond strength
Any follow up to this video? Did the owner reach out to you for any additional advice? Curious...
Thx for the video I’m working on my basement shower now and I’m scared I’m going to screw it up. I’m new to this I just want to save money. I hope I cover everything that needs to be cover. One question I have for you. I did my shower preslope today but it wasn’t too level does it matter if it’s a little off before the liner goes in? Thank you
You should redo the base for him and coach him through the rest. Would make a good video if anything. Does he have a trade he can barter for a couple days labor?
I agree help the dude out if he lives close bye. Stop bye once a week and give him the steps so he can do it by himself.
No just looking down angry😂
how come people don’t know the importance of waterproofing before doing the tile for shower
If money is the real issue, you can reuse the tiles since they come off so easy. Scrape of the mastic and if needed, soak them up and wash off the rest of mastic with a sponge. Add hardie where needed and then redguard for waterproof. Buy a finer blade for cleaner cuts and disc-sander to buff off the rough spots. If you dont use shluter trim, it will cost under $250 with proper thinset.
Quite true.
Feel bad for Patrick, it at same time; glad stopped project. If woulda finished and used, woulda spent way more money in few yrs when things started to rot out & tiles/grout started cracking.....would have been more devastated imo, at that point.
Hopefully the tile guy who did pan will work something out and not be a, told you so, person .
Happy 2021 Isaac and crew✌🏼
Not sure if everyone gets the same ads watching these video's. Mine was at beginning with stay at home mom looking for ideas to make extra money. Ya...I have a great idea how you could make extra money!
too bad he isnt near fresno, I'd of helped him out... Sierra Custom Tile
Great content Isaac!
Thanks Devin. Happy New Year and much love from me and the guys.

Doing some of my own tiling poorly has been one of the more expensive lessons I learned.... (we didn't always have youtube to get some basics from)
Good job Isaac!! You rock Tile Coach, happy New Years to your family and the O Tile team!!
Happy new year Chris!!
Great video. Really great.
People are all worthy of respect no matter their income
Ooooo. Thanksgiving dinner is gonna be tense.
my father in law is a plumber and he helped me wire my recessed lights among other things ... had to get it all rewired .. he's a great plumber though LOL
Family friend had a "buddy" do his shower. Put hardiboard on the floor of the shower, and put the tile directly on. Water was just pouring in the basement.
That’s what basements are for, to catch excess water
Just think of it as an indoor pool
Two showers for the price of one, smart move.
So much enthusiasm 😃
How do u guys feel above redgarding over the curb? I installed one of the curb-perfect kits to encase my lined 2x4 curb in concrete should i now redgard the top plate and outside of the new curb and where it meets the walls or just thinset
Nice video, alot of information
Anthony-“I did the wood and the drywall above that”
Isaac - “excuse me what?”
His name is Patrick 😂
So glad I found your page, really enjoying the video and learning. I won’t take offense to the “DIY” term lol not sure why anyone would do this without researching
Why don't these people watch RUclips before they hire a contractor???
The thing i noticed first was the Edelbrock sticker on the toolbox. Do you have anything with an Edelbrock? :)
He mentions the Schluter Trim for the edge work. Honestly, I think it's tile dependant; natural stone looks alot better without the Schluter trim. I polish and silicone all the exposed edges, looks fine.
I've seen that mastic in wet area. It breaks down very fast and molds when wet. Nasty
I was in Lowes last night in the tile area. A guy told the clerk that he was doing a shower and wanted to know what to use on the pebbles he was buying for the shower floor. That mastic was grabbed. I asked if the guy knew what he was doing. He said "Yes." I then asked him why he thought it was acceptable to use mastic in a wet area. The customer in the bright orange construction shirt said that he was doing his own shower and didn't care. The clerk later approached me and said that he would never recommend that for wet areas. I told him that he almost helped a guy that doesn't know what he's doing ruin someone's shower.
Great info. Thanks!
did they put tile right on drywallwith nothing inbetween?
Good 👍🏽 Brasil 🇧🇷
This is why you hire a professional you pay double or triple in the end if you don't
Or don't do it at all... Or take an hour and study.
You from Brasil 🇧🇷?
That's some pretty cool tile and it looks as if they were doing a decent job on the tile but I think they are missing a few things behind it if your going to use purple board at least seam tape the joints and use redgard
atleast he can save the tiles since the come off so easy
I used cement board, 3 coats of red guard, including in the joints so it's all flexible if need be, highest quality thinset they sell at home depot for large tile, Polyblend grout, 2 coats of sealer. I couldn't take my tile off while it was wet to adjust it. If there is an earthquake I'm running into my bathroom.
Lol 20:39 what a smooth produce ad.
I currently have my shower ripped out to the studs because some quacks we hired in 2016 didn't know what they were doing
So funny because for me the comment above yours, is, " this is why you hire professionals otherwise it costs you a fortune".
So far in my experience it costs a fortune to get a pro, and they do jack job anyway.
@@liamjenkins82 yep we hired them for our whole house to be redone after the 2016 flood in louisiana. 10/10 wouldn't recommend. Literally anyone can have a contractors license in louisiana as long as you have a minimum of $5000 in your bank account and know basic construction stuff to pass the test that only cost a few hundred dollars if that😡
