All these years and it is worse. Social Media opened my eyes when, to my horror, I discovered how many of my close friends were racists & bigots. I was truly shocked & saddened. On the bright side, it seems the world has more humanitarians than haters. George Floyd’s (rest his soul) death rocked the whole world. 😢💚
Billie Holiday was 'The Temple Mount' in the area of heartfelt jazz singing. Even the extraordinarily talented young girl, Angelina Jordan, has said she wouldn't be the singer she is today if not for Ms.Holiday's influence on her from when she was a 'tot' growing up in Norway of all places. She has adopted Billie's 'breathy', 'whisper-like' responses when singing heartfelt ballads and a large reason why she is the reigning 'Queen Of Jazz'.
Now that was Wonderful, John did a great job on that song, i only heard Billy Holiday and Diana Ross sing that song, but it was good to hear him add his own style to the sad song.Bravo.:-)
Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant South The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather For the wind to suck For the sun to rot For the tree to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop
Everyone uses the word haunting to describe this song. The song itself is not meant to haunt people. Its the harsh reality we face and have faced throughout history.
I had to share this on Facebook tonight, given the verdict in the Zimmerman trial. Don't let anyone tell you that lynching isn't still happening -- it's only slightly more subtle.
Fast forward five years 2018, "Strange Fruit" is no longer lynching settled, now it's blatant right up in your face . Just ask number 9 , 4 + 5 is 9 ask 9 Strange Fruit is still dripping ... Oh, my God. Thank you. Mic Off!
You simply can not continue lynching us and expect blind obedience! My name is Kunta. My name will forever be Kunta - Sir! With due respect, denied me.
Okay imma say it... this sounds good BUT... this song was meant to be sad and sound “scary “...not “romantic “ or “relaxed “ this song is meant to make you feel uncomfortable yet intrigued... as a black person in the south I had to say it
Tell it....return to righteousnessne! 🕎 Duet. 31:17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will HIDE MY FACE FROM THEM, and they shall be DEVOURED, and MANY EVILS and TROUBLES shall befall them; so that👉🏾 THEY WILL SAY IN THAT DAY. ARE NOT THESE EVILS COME UPON US, BECAUSE OUR GOD IS NOT AMONG US? 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are TURNED UNTO OTHER GODS. 19 Now therefore WRITE YE THIS SONG FOR YOU, and TEACH IT THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL: PUT IT IN THEIR MOUTHS, that this👉🏾 SONG MAY BE A WITNESS FOR ME AGAINST THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.👈🏽 21 And it shall COME TO PASS, when MANY EVILS AND TROUBLES ARE BEFALLEN THEM, that this🗣🎶 SONG SHALL TESTIFY AGAINST THEM as a witness; for it shall NOT BE FORGOTTEN out of the mouths of THEIR SEED: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware. 22 Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and TAUGHT IT THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.
Check out the powerful and poignant performance of Strange Fruit by the amazing 3 MO' DIVAS on the Showbiz Stories channel! A very unique arrangement combined with the rarely heard Lament!
He's a talented singer for sure, but I just don't feel the same listening to this as to Billie Holiday's, Nina Simone's, or Jeff Buckley's versions. I don't think he lets enough emotion leak into his vocals. He's thinking too much and feeling too little, as Chaplin would say.
Exactly. He's using the song as a springboard to showcase his vocal technique and style. It's awful. There's no life in his delivery. Robert Wyatt does a beautiful, albeit imperfect version of the song. Check it out. And of course, nothing comes even close to Billie Holiday's interpretation.
John Doe to be honest, I feel really moved by his version actually. So i don’t agree with you idea. It is too easy to Compare him to monsters of Sing and say it is not as good that them. I mean, Nina Simone is just the Queen by exemple.
How dare, they gang up to try to lynch MY child. Never! They will have to kill me. Not MY son. I refuse to go back into chains. My name is and will ALWAYS be Kunta! And with pride. Proud African!
Everyone please listen to Jeff Buckley's version. Not saying J Legend is bad at all, cause this is hauntingly beautiful. Just listen to Buckley's though. You'll understand.
Great song and all but anyone else absolutely fixated on the way he downright kissing that mic and wondering if other ppl had to use that or if those covers are a one use thing?
And traumatizing them just in time for prison (life sentence), and off the streets. You hunted them down from their continent, used them for labour and now they are inconvenient and must be prepped for prison from the moment they are born.
It’s southern trees bearing strange fruit - he said “southern trees bear a strange fruit”. At first, I think - this is a God awful rendition, does he even know what the song is about? And yet, after my initial anger, I hear how serene the pastoral scene is amid the carnage of the black bodies swinging in the southern trees. It is a very interesting juxtaposition. .
Oh, no more secrets. I got this. Put them in prison and get them off our streets. They are no longer useful tools for free. Who needs them walking around?
Still here. If this gets me to Russia, at least my son won't get shot walking while black there. I will deliver. They are trying to see what I am prepared to "let go" of.
The TRUTH you will get. I promise. And that does not make me bad or a terrorist. I should be celebrated, not investigated, gang up against, tricked and lied to. I have shown my true colours by repeatedly forgiving everything and everyone as long as I get my TRUTH and my human rights counted as valid too. I am the VICTIM Everyone else against me was wrong. So don't turn this against me. ME AND MY SON ARE THE VICTIM! not proof read.
This is good but listen to Nina Simone sing it.. It is amazing. She lived closer to the bad times and you can hear the “experience “ in her heart.. Sorry John, she blows this away. I feel like she saw the things she sings about. Makes my soul hurt.
LIstening today because I cannot stop crying. Strange fruit indeed. It grows even now.
I weep with you
1939 and here we still are. The time goes shorter for me and I thought we would have made progress by now.
It is a deep wound that has never fully healed, tragic...
All these years and it is worse. Social Media opened my eyes when, to my horror, I discovered how many of my close friends were racists & bigots. I was truly shocked & saddened. 🖤🖤🖤
One of the saddest, most haunting songs ever. 😢
BUT TRUE!!!
This is the most powerful song that I've ever heard... Love Billie singing it as well... What courage that lady had... Beautiful version... TY
This Guy is fantastic. I just love everything he does.
Just listen to him and his piano.
Wow.
“Your grandchildren will be singing strange fruit” I’m so glad this song is resurfacing and so many of us are learning how fucked Billie was treated.
my granddaughter hooked me onto this song..she heard it in her English class...OMG i can feel every word in it

Listen to Annie Lennox version.
Billy Holiday was one brave lady when she sang this. She’s a Legend, like John ❤️❤️
What is brave abut tis performance 80+ years after it was first performed? Then it really was brave thing to do.
This performance puts me in that disgusting moment! Powerful!
This version is as real as it gets John Legend delivers. If u can feel him making u feel it. JOB WELL DONE!!!!!
TWO THUMBS UP. Thank you for this rendition and your sacrifice.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaasss
His voice is so ethereal and spiritual! It's so hard to explain!
John Legend.... Simply Amazing.
Now that was Wonderful, John did a great job on that song, i only heard Billy Holiday and Diana Ross sing that song, but it was good to hear him add his own style to the sad song.Bravo.:-)

Billy holiday classic song..well done john
This is why they call him a legend
And now I can´t breath, I cry God!
Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
Thank you🙏 John
Still lynching!
With approval from the top!
Everyone uses the word haunting to describe this song. The song itself is not meant to haunt people. Its the harsh reality we face and have faced throughout history.
Thank you🙏
...you alright bro?

Lady Day is sitting on that piano bench next to him. RIP Lady Day ✝️

Thank you 🙏 John.
Love it 💘❤😍
Silent trees witness pain and sorrows, but then shelter the birds before they fly to utter freedom...
Been listening to this most saddest song since Nina Simone
1959 and Diana Ross till John Legend.
Do you mean Billie Holiday 1959?
this beautiful piano makes the song beautiful, eventhough its sadness
Still here for you John.
I will deliver!
R.I.P. 🥀💔TO THE STRANGE FRUIT 🧡💖
Still here for you.
Thanks John.
My son represents you.
I will deliver!
John legend is a legend
Me, I cry too in these times .......... Can't believe anymore humans are good, they are nothing more than a cruel mistake god have made............
By 10yrs old - its too late. There is nothing anyone can redeem.
My goodness...the emotion of Black people in that song ..it runs right through your blood and bones!
Got this - don't worry.
Those who laugh last, laugh the longest! Forever actually.
Night after night after night - I will speak for you, like Ms. Holiday sang.
Ну что-ж . Легенда - он легенда и есть . Класс !
без Канье Уэста не то....
no dislikes. thas whas up
Still here.
for the pros......oh man that just slapped me like a sack of bricks and I replayed it over and he indeed messed up
They even delete my "thank you's" but have no trouble traumatizing in the behind the scenes.
My son...
My typing is way behind the speed of my brain.
😢😢
Billie Holiday💕
Can anyone find the sheet music for this?? Or a tutorial or anything??
You simply can not continue lynching us and expect blind obedience!

Listen to Jill Scott do this song.....
John Doe plus he MARRY esau

Jill Scott's version is the best cover hands down.
How dare, they gang up to try to lynch MY child. Never! They will have to kill me. Not MY son. I refuse to go back into chains.
My name is and will ALWAYS be Kunta!
And with pride. Proud African!
In the same purpose, with a different style Georges Brassens has sing the same in French, in the song 'Le verger du roi Louis'..
I am awestruck. So good. Somehow the piano key was too cheerful for the song though?
not enough views.
Someone is awake.
Just one of you is.
HR is gifted y school
I studied him
😭😭😭
I WILL deliver!
I will deliver!
And of course - this "tiny" and inconvenient matter of 400years. Many faces, same objective!
It’s insane as a black person I’ve only just found out about this song.
I good papa.
Everyone please listen to Jeff Buckley's version. Not saying J Legend is bad at all, cause this is hauntingly beautiful. Just listen to Buckley's though. You'll understand.
+Angelo Lozada Buckley's version is awesome!
and then there is John Martyns version! Worth a listen!!!
Great song and all but anyone else absolutely fixated on the way he downright kissing that mic and wondering if other ppl had to use that or if those covers are a one use thing?
Working on it.
Is there sheet music for this?
Like the brother's talent but Nina Simone's version still does for me.
I will deliver.

The real Legend was Billy Holiday
And traumatizing them just in time for prison (life sentence), and off the streets. You hunted them down from their continent, used them for labour and now they are inconvenient and must be prepped for prison from the moment they are born.

I do not understand what he is trying to do with this song.
He ever didn't know
Too disconnected for a such emotional subject matter. He needs to think about what he's singing.
strani frutti che pendono dagli alberi... ... !!!
You are messing with my keypad again. Stop!
Still here.
If this gets me to Russia, at least my son won't get shot walking while black there.
I will deliver. They are trying to see what I am prepared to "let go" of.
It sound good...but this song is not meant to be sung in a romantic kinda way and in my opinion john has 2 dial...romantic and inperational
Billie Holiday died for this song … JL has the privilege can sing it today.
No John....i love you but The Crop note was too calm
Deleted my comments I will type it again
You are not for target practice!
I am the VICTIM
Everyone else against me was wrong. So don't turn this against me.

1) original 2) Jeff Buckley's version 3) this
Grey Matters Uhhh hello Nina Simone?
This is good but listen to Nina Simone sing it.. It is amazing. She lived closer to the bad times and you can hear the “experience “ in her heart.. Sorry John, she blows this away. I feel like she saw the things she sings about. Makes my soul hurt.
Access you will be destroyed too. Not terribly business smart are you?
