This reminds me of my childhood when my family's friends would visit and they would talk about these type of incidents. I would be afraid to go to bed. This is haunting and beautiful

Good Morning From Austin TX🌇 I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER HEARD A MAN TAKE ON THE SORROW, SHOCK, "ANGUISH OF THIS STORY: HOWEVER: WHHHAAATTTTT DAAAA... KABOOM!!! WOW...I AM SITTING Here Trying To Rap My Head Around Youru YOUR ABSOLUTE HOW YOUR
I'm dumbfounded at how much this version affected me. Billie Holiday's version is one of my favorite songs ever and this guy somehow made it more powerful!I felt like I was hilding my breath the entire song without knowing it and at the rnd just letting it all out at once. Truly a spectacular gift with an amazing song.
So it's September 2017, and why am I just discovering this version of "Strange Fruit"? Thanks to my favorite jazz radio station I am discovering Jose James. Sitting in my vehicle, in the company parking lot, I was mesmerized right from the solo voice intro. The layering of his voice and the somber harmonies, came across as a tortured souls' lament and/or a funeral dirge, serving to amplify the meaning of the song. Thus the harmony is an integral part (of the song). I'm telling you that I felt the virtual presence of the ancestors begging to be remembered, and how death came for them. For me, this cover is unique and perfect. Thank you, Jose James. I am looking forward to hearing more from you.
Truly powerful. Each time he held a note it felt like bells ringing out. This song always gave me chills but this version made me shiver with its impact. The snap that would play also made me jump everytime and gave off a presence of fear. This song should be done like this every single time.
It's difficult to revamp a classic, and even more so when you do it after Nina Simone. But yet again, a bleak depiction of the cultivation of misery is transformed into something that arrests the soul. The harmony that he uses in the background really sets his version apart from others. It seems very similar to the bluegrass requiem "O death", and complements an already tragically beautiful piece.
He wasn't trying to revamp this song, nore does this song need revamping. Many Black artists have sung this particular song to bring much need attention to situation happing in the Black community that are widely ignored by the masses because a percentage of those masses are the ones doing the terrors in which this song is about. Or they sing it in tribute to those who have fallen as well as for the original singer Billie Holiday.
this is the type of song you got to do justice. you can't do it to show off how well you can song you do it to convey a feeling. and honestly I liked it the beginning took too long but it made you feel that pain. like I said this song is about the words not vocals.
"I shall come, not as one who has escaped pain, but as one who has glorified it." Jose James interruption of this Holiday classic is spellbindingly beautiful. Like watching lava flowing. Devastating in it's make up but visually beautiful in it's appearance "Strange Fruit" is a song once heard it's imagery stays with you forever. A song about hatred that goes far beyond race.
I don't have many words: but I am very impressed and touched by this version. BTW: since his first album 2008: The Dreamer, I am a fan and I saw him many times in concert.
Oops! Thank You Young Man. It was Beautifully & Deeply Expressed. 🌠 I haven't had Time To Sit Quietly & "Absorb What You Created." My Mind Is Blown....🙏🏽👼🏽
WOW I love this song, someone very special introduced me to Jose James' music and haven't stopped listening to him since. This one is just mesmerizing! and need I add he is super cute!
I've been trawling through different versions of Strange Fruit. I so want to sing it, but could never do it the justice it deserves. Nothing beats the original by Billie Holiday, but this one gave me tingles.
Jose James. He cut a whole album of Billie Holiday- 'Lady Day's" songs. You should check it out. He sings all different genres of music & is fabulous in all of his interpretations.
Sorry it has taken me this long to find this treasure but I am one to admit that this song scared me and enthralled me equally. It is a random hand of god to bless a person with the gift carry souls across the plain into the nether, Jose James has this ability.
It's quite disturbing that so many people are talking about his rendition and how beautifully he sang it, but not looking past his voice and really listening to the words.
I think that most people listening to this are already familiar with the song. The song is nothing new, the rendition however is, hence the lack of dialogue about it's lyrics as it's likely already been discussed and thought on by a majority of the audience.
@@ApparentlyGod i would like to second this....the lyrics are inescapable..elemental...its the treatment which brings out .new emotion and power ..amplifying this masterpiece....it was truth.
I have written an African American horror film and I would like to use your version of this song for the music on the trailer. I will give you credit in the closing credits of the movie.
He is not pre-recording himself, he is using a looper, when he taps the pedal with his foot, it starts recording a loop, at the end of his loop he taps the pedal again to loop when he just recorded, and then does another one, it's live looping in layers, many pedals like the BOSS Loopstation can do this, software like Ableton Live with a foot midi controller (or any midi controller for that matter...) can achieve this, as well.
Thank you very much for responding. I was mesmerized by this technique. I am sure Lizz Wright is using this to "loop" in the song Surrender on her latest album. Thank you again.
Jose James is a gift with a gift. But I’m truly disappointed in his interpretation of the saddest, most terrifying song of every generation. Jose simply tried to make his incredible vocals as the feature of the song, which he by no means should be. Jose cannot be. “Strange Fruit” is a poem turned song that is far to important to be treated in this manner. “Strange Fruit” is not just a song that should stir up crushing heartache, “Strange Fruit” is meant to conjure up nightmares so powerful that awakens you from a deep sleep. “Strange Fruit” is not simply a song about racism. Strange Fruit is song about a learned, generationally founded, unconditional, all encompassing HATE. A HATE so deep that only the most violent actions can hope to temporarily quell that HATE, though it never does hold back or lessen the HATE. A HATE so deep that those that are the target of the HATE need to always exist so the person that HATES will always have the necessary target so the HATER’S life has “reason.” “Strange Fruit” is a photograph, a painting, and a long earned vocal release of witness to the most extreme action taken because of that HATE. As phenomenal as Jose James is, and he definitely is phenomenal, he dropped the ball on this one.
This song was given the respect and honor it deserves. Shook hearing it.
This is hard to listen and hard to stay away from at the same time. It's hard to not end up in tears!
+Jovanka Ciares I totally agree. It's a beautiful struggle.
And your comment just pushed me over the edge into tears.

You mean after Billie Holiday.
huh I'm dumb, for real thought that Simone's cover was the OG. Ty for remedying my misattribution and have a good one
Absolutely mesmerizing. Clarity, depth, control. Unique and superior.

ARE THERE ANY RECORDING ARTISTS OR MUSICIANS OUT THERE THAT KNOW THE NAME/TITLE OF THAT MACHINE HE IS USING TO PRERECORD HIMSELF.
In this video, Jose James is using the Digitech 'Jamman' pedal for this performance.
