- The pepole who made Scotland weren't just Viking, Angle, Pict, Briton or Scot. Some were the members of the Merchant Guilds. Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey takes a look at the history of his home town to give a better understanding of how these organisations formed our country from medieval times to the modern day.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Hey Bruce, the closed captions aren't working here and I was hopeful you could go back in and transcribe them because I'm really curious about which guilds they represent but I'm having trouble understanding and it's too far for me to see lips.
I love your content and don't want to miss anything! ❤

@@ScotlandHistoryTours what do you think of billy Carson?
@@petermacleod2402 Never heard of him. Is he Scottish?

You preserve and build Scottish culture, and I know you will be recognised widely by your countrymen in time.
He already is. Bruce is a living legend.
Aye but ye get some Scot’s who think they’re English and will denounce any real Scottish history because they’re turncoats
But Brucey bhoy is a real Scot🏴🏴🏴
Yaaaaay🎉women finally included!! Loved seeing the current ancestors of the guild. Thank you for the high quality history. That book alone was astounding, you got access to it!!!
I know, right
I love listening to you tell the stories of Scotland. It is my way of visiting Scotland through your stories❤
Another awesome history lesson Bruce, keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!

Perth must be, one of the most underrated towns in the UK. A real hidden gem.
Agreed
@@ScotlandHistoryTours People from Perth - give them an Inch and they'll take a mile!
You are really an excellent story-teller! I've learned a great deal about my Scottish roots from you!
Never knew you were from Perth, my granddad and dad were and its so great to see you showing the city some love :)
Turns out this guy was only born in Scotland, where the rest of us have never left
I'm barely Scottish but I enjoy your channel.
Mad old books that I've never heard of! This is the stuff I'm here for. Seems crazy to see you setting out medieval charters on the tables of the corpy library while there's biddies in the background furtively slipping big print Gilly Coopers into their bags.
Loved this video, great work lad.
😂😂
I love what you do; always so informative and interesting! Be proud of your craft!
Thank you so much!
A lovely personal touch to this one Bruce, but you’re quite passionate about your subject anyway 😀👍
It's ma toon😎
Great to hear about one history of Guilds in more detail 🤠💜
Bruce, another great video, Thanks. Rutherglen also got Royal status in 1126 from David 1. Similar to Perth to control the river and area and trade. Might be one for thew future.
Who knows? I pass down the main street often on the way to visit my sister in Castlemilk
Terrific history well put and displayed! Keep it up.
Much appreciated!
We just purchased tickets to see your show in Ottawa, Canada - we are very excited :)
I miss Perth. Briefly worked at that very library many years ago.
Great video, as always. I always look forward to watching.
Awesome, thank you!
A'reyt Bruce. I was always proud of the idea that my city was built up by its people and opposed the King in the Civil War, as we English refer to it.
I do envy though the way you can still point to your traditions. The city of my youth is unrecognisable in places and I saw a video tour of it showing much of the centre is dying with empty shops.
Brilliant video again 🏴🏴
Thanks
My wife wants to visit Scotland in two years. These videos help me visit before the trip.
Great video again, thanks Bruce. Your storytelling always manages to bring to light aspects of history in such a relatable way.
Many thanks!
You need to do one that exposes the people that sold us out from English gold
Your videos are always a sure way to make my day. You're one of my favorite humans living today. Keep them coming!
Yay! Thank you!
I envy all your history, that you honor so well. Thank you for another great video.

Do love when a new Bruce video drops. Weekly history knowledge dose, administered! 😊
Boom!
I wish I had found your videos before I visited Scotland last August, but I am enjoying them now.
Thanks Bruce for another quality vlog.
Another fascinating video Bruce 👍
Many thanks!
Seeing home is always surreal when it’s online
Fascinating stuff; especially seeing the actual documents issued to the town over the centuries.
These mundane records are so cool.
I know, right?
Fantastic video! I didn't realize the Perth library had medieval documents. I'm confused about your comments at the 4:10 mark. You say Robert II in 1443, however, Robert ruled from 1371 - 1390. Did you mean David II and 1343 (David was king in that year) or James II (who was king in 1443)? Otherwise, fantastic vid as always!
Oooft, I'll be honest I can't remember now. I know the charter were Robert II and Robert III. I cna't remember what I said about them now. More likely just got the date wrong
Congrats to ALL the ladies who joined the guild
Ta fir another fine video. Yir listing of some of the royal boroughs and the economic reasons for Perth's development brought tae mind Sanquhar. Ah've always wondered why such a wee place had a royal charter.
Oooh interesting question
New Galloway too
My parents came from Scotland, I have yet to see it, but this is a wonderful start. Cheers from the Canadian tundra lo.
If you can make it to one of my Canadian shows in summer I'd be delighted
I will certainly try thank you.@@ScotlandHistoryTours
You make learning fun! That is the best compliment for an educator.
Watching from Western Australia. From Perth. The big Perth. @2:30 you describe Perth and its position on the river. The river’s size. It’s exactly as WA Perth is/was the furthest they could get a boat up the river. Huge expanse of water. Etc. Your statement about Scottish Perth made me realise where the inspiration for the name of our WA settlement came from.
This was so awesome and interesting, I truly enjoyed it and enjoy all of your history tours. Thank you Bruce, keep up the good work. 😊❤
Always a pleasure to read your posts....cheers, E...😊
😘
You tell a good story, Bruce!
I passed Perth on the way up from North Yorkshire, and again on the way down from the North West Coast, last week. 19C in January in Ullapool but a monstrous wind last weekend.
I've been to Perth many times in the past, camped at Scone Palace, enjoyed visiting my wife's - born in Bridge of Allan - summer holiday place (where Granny & Grandpa lived in Arbroath. What an Abbey & what History) as well as other places. But, pausing only to praise Ullapool and Dingwall, I thought I'd end by telling you that me and my friends in our local pub in North Yorkshire agree - Dundee is the Stockton-on-Tees of Scotland.
...mind you, I did enjoy looking around the Discovery in Dundee (but exploration and Antarctica are my thing....).
I love how local it al is. You went to school with everyone!
Aye, Perth's only about 55k
One of your best yet Bruce - loved how you explained where we are now and from where it all came
Thanks mate
Bruce, you do Scotland an honor by how well you do your profession.
My love of history started with a tour guide who was so knowledgeable and talented he made history and HERstory alive.
I was hooked!
Thank you again.

Fantastic episode! I haven't explored Perth, but it sounds like a must visit for history buffs.
Lots of stuff happened here
For anyone who is building up their family tree and who has Scottish ancestors, this is an interesting point to look out for.
Words fail me, just excellent & well done 👍
Wow, thanks!
Very good video, thank-you for bringing to light the past, as it is still maintained in the present.
You're very welcome
Fascinating topic, sennachie. Very few people take the time to look at the underlayers of a society. And how those in the underlayer play very important roles in the evolution of a nation. The merchant class has played a significant role in every nation. Without them, very little would be accomplished, yes? Weel done.
Hi Bruce
Another fascinating video about city Although in my case that might be Crieff.
Great position to be, above Dundee!
Are you coming to my show in Strathearn Arts on 17th Feb?
@ScotlandHistoryTours unfortunately i live in Derby these days. Not only that but my other half is having a knee replacement so travelling is going to be curtailed.
When you're back from your North American tour and have another in the UK I'll make sure we can get to at least one. I have a brother in Fife so a combined visit isn't out of the question.
Absolutely fascinating Bruce! As a Crieff born and bred boy, I've learnt a hell of a lot from your good self about our area and I thank you for that. Whit's aw this rivalry thing wi' Dundee though...? 🤣 Well done Perth for letting the ladies in to the inner circle at long last.
Aye, it's the football
This is fun to see. I descend from David I too.
Proper drop the mic 😂
It always intrigues me that folks are invariably required to wear gloves when handling these old documents (for good reasons!) but no precautions are made for protecting them from the equally inevitable minor ejections of spittle when jaw-flapping all over them. 😜🙄😁
I got so excited that spittle was the least of our worries😂😂
Hi again Bruce. Such a proud tradition handed down through the generations. My Father in Law was a freeman of Berwick but neither he nor any of his brothers produced a male heir. It now transpires that my wife may be able to take up the reins and hand them to our Son who is a Stewart through his maternal grandmother 🌞
Yay
Well done, that was something I sort of knew about but not quite if you know what I mean. There are sides to towns and cities we never knew. It was as they say. The difference between us and them. The traditional way and the modern way. Just shows how much it is out of date when its was only the end of 2023. That woman became part of the guild. I wonder if there are some that dose not even have women yet. Thanks again Bruce for opening up our history and parts that still function today.
Eager to learn and love your presentation style!
What’re your opinions, if any, on the writings of anthropologist David Macritchie?
Bruce thannks for sharing your lovre of home. What does the church smell like??? I loved how you beamed from love of Perth. Your best share ever!!! I love you crew too

Well heck and darn, I was not able to understand any of the with the 4 burgesses. Even though I had closed captioning on it didn't show any of the conversation. The sound was really bad and about the only thing I believe I heard was that it wasn't until 2023 that women could hold the office. I'd be interested in knowing how many burgesses there were. Did it depend on the size of the town or the number of guilds. I feel I lost a lot of this and am really sorry. Very interesting episode.
Ha! I need subtitles for this one, when you and the modern burgesses are talking in Perthese! Even the closed captions gave up! A really enlightening episode, nonetheless.
I type closed captoins for the scripted bits because I know what I'm goign to say in advance.
Never been in the kirk, even tho' i was brought up in Perth. btw, didnt you grow up on Glovers Sreett ?
Aye
Our guild had forced us to look at statues of slave traders for over a century.
Bristol.
There are some Royal Burghs in the Highlands, Tain for sure, maybe Elgin. Don’t think Inverness was. Possibly Nairn though.
Elgin? They were rolled out over time
By way of comparison: The struggle between the high guilds and other towns people takes place over an extended period in Florence, culminating in Savonarola's theocratic regime in the 1480.s. It was a cross between a democratic revolution establishing the supremacy of an elected council, a religious reformation As early as 1378 the lower guilds and labours had rebelled in the Ciompi revolt, and established a revolutionary commune. The Medici had gained hegemony within the high guild oligarchy, but cunningly preserved the façade of the Republic. A process we are now, only too familiar with, in our current shamocracy.
We have unions. Not quite the same as a guild, but they still have more power than people realize.
Mr Fumey!!
I bumped into you on the morning of filming this on my way to work just outside the city hall.
What an amazing video! I’ve only just got round to watching it but what a story! I was curious as to what it would be about in our boring old ‘city’ but as always massively entertaining information from you! 💙🤍
💚
👍 😀
I believe St Johnston became Perth in the 1600s. At roughly the same time, St Johnston was founded in Donegal by Scots Settlers. I am a Donegal man descended from some of these Scots Settlers.
spotted the wee closed caption joke 6:09
I've just taken it out. We had to edit it out because some idiot passing by deliberately made a noise as we were filming, but we didn't notice at the time
I totally want those folks to tell us stories about YOU as a wee lad, lol.
😂😂I doubt there'd be much to tell
I don't believe THAT for one second ;p@@ScotlandHistoryTours
Puzzled / Troubled by something. On the front of the pews in different areas are a gold and brown Double-Headed Eagle. This is a symbol of Russia pulled from Byzantium. I was surprised to see them here. Can you say anything about the history of these Double-Headed eagles in Perth?
I don't know the heraldry. I just konw it's our crest
One of the guilds of today in the US, would the “Freemasons” (one for the men, and a separate guild for the women)
🤔I don't think they're quite the same thing though
My mother liked Perth. My grandfather was a pipe smoker. Rattrays!
fits that aboot the pies :P
I find there is a direct relationship between intelligence and good records.
...like Michael Jackson?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours no. 😆 GOOD records. 😉
I would say that Sheena Easton is one of the greatest people to ever come out of Scotland
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am wondering if you have ever looked at trans Atlantic Scottish families. I don't mean Scottish people who moved to the new world but families that moved back and forth. In the 18th century it seems to have been very big between the Caribbean and the highlands as well as the southern colonies at least until the American revolution. Maybe it is only people of a particular economic status but it seems like something that is missed. Some of these people may have even identified as being from the place in Scotland of their families but were actually born in the America or the Caribbean.
An interesting story is to see who this guys half brother is. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Campbell
Hmmm, slightly, but not much
