    Lol I recall this FB thread, good exchange of info/experience! I don’t know what’s right but my 128g cards formatted to FAT32 have been working without issue for over 6 months now 👍 I just formatted using the option within the VRX menu and it utilizes all the space. Never had a flight not record as far as I’m aware, and all firmware updates using it have been successful so far. Great video Stacey!

      Yeah, I think in the end it will be fine. Good to have someone who has been using it for a long while provide some feedback. Just reading the docs you would think otherwise, so it's good to let people know they have options.

    Windows refuses to format sd cards as fat32 if size is over 32GB to comply with the spec. Formatting tbe sdcard in the hdzero vrx allows fat32 format for any size. Microsoft charges $6000 and some amount per device to support exFAT - this is likely the reason that exFAT isnt implemented in the vrx

    • @StacemanFPV
      @StacemanFPV  2 года назад +1

      There are some programs for windows that get around the limitation. At least that's what I understand but I don't use Windows so can't confirm

      exfat is a shit filesystem anyway, please, tell everybody, stop using it. I have a very good reason why you shouldn't touch this piece of shit and it has nothing to do with the $6000 licence fee.
      it isn't journalled and even worse, it has only one copy of the File Allocation Table (FAT), which the file system uses for knowing what files and folders are stored on the partition.
      With fat32, there is a primary AND a secondary FAT, meaning it can use the secondary to replace corrupt entries and do sanity checks etc. Or perhaps you randomly unplug your hard drive and it was writing to the drive at the time and gets corrupt? Then fat32 can restore the filesystem without any problem. You have to work really really hard to corrupt it to the point where fat32 can't recover it.
      When I heard about exfat, I thought they would build on top of that and make something even better. But holy shit it's worse, it's so much worse.
      This filesystem is so fragile and delicate that you can't use it for any disk where you care about your data. I found this out the hard way and thats why I know so much about it, but I lost 2TB of data because the drive unplugged when the computer was going to sleep during a long file copy operation and when I turned the computer on in the morning, I got all the notiifcations about it unplugging the drive when going to sleep and all my files are gone and the whole drive is corrupted and I can't open it again, even in linux which normally is better than mac or windows at this sort of thing.
      And the reason is because of the design of the file system, is has no redundancy. So one mistake and you're totally fucked.
      Exfat is shit, we should refuse to use it.

    Just adding that I use 128gb and 64gb sandisk gold cards formatted to fat32. I do this on Windows 11 using an application called guiformat. I once forgot my Micro SD card and a friend of mine let me format his in-VRX and it utilized all the space. Have never had problems recording flights with any of these high capacity cards.

    +1👍okay i promise i was listening, but might have zoned out. sounded like sdcard size was the overall concern, which it should not be; However, the thing about fat32, is individual filesizes can only be up to 4GB each. your HD vid may or may not be reaching that (probably not)
    EDIT: okay i see the conversation with Ryan....
    i've used fat32 on 64GB thumb drives plenty, but i always format via Linux, so this might be why.

    From what I understand, hdzero goggles are formatted with a linux operating system, therefore it's strange to me why the goggles can't support anything linux supports, you just build the image with the required packages installed. Fat32 supports any file up to 4GB in size and 8TB maximum partition size. So unless you guys are recording huge videos onto the sdcard, then fat32 is just fine.
    Also fat32 has other benefits that you won't know about until disaster happens. Fat32 has a redundant FAT table that means it has redundancy about the contents of the drive in case the power suddenly goes out. Why is this useful? Well sometimes with sdcards you unplug them and the FAT table becomes corrupt and on fat32 this is less of a problem because you have a second copy. Meaning you can just fall back to the old table when something gets corrupt in the primary copy.
    This is bad on exfat because it has no such redundancy. Which to be honest is fucking stupid and should be fixed, but it won't cause some idiot designed this file system and now it's too late to do anything to fix it.
    The problem with exfat is, when your FAT table (the table holding all the file system data for every file and folder on the drive), gets corrupt. Then all your files vanish and exfat has no way to restore access to any of the bits and bytes still on the disk. It's all lost, you can't recognise the drive anymore. You can't recover any of the files anymore. You're fucked. If you have 8TB of archive data on a removable hard drive like I did, well then tuck your head between your legs and kiss all you want, cause it won't get your files back. You just lost everything and you can't get it back, ever. You're only hope is a full bit scan of the drive and hope you have a program that can recognise files by data structure and maybe the program can pull a disorganised mess of files, that you'll have to reconstruct manually, file and folder, one by one.
    So exfat is fucking shit. fat32 supports 4GB files and 8TB hard drives. Hdzero goggles use linux. So I don't see why it can't support my 256GB sdcard. Seems just to be a small configuration change we need to do. I'm curious to see whether I can do it actually.

    • @StacemanFPV
      @StacemanFPV  Год назад

      This was on the external module and not the goggles. Goggles do run Linux. Latest version handles everything just fine but not exfat as that requires licensing or something I think. But I use 128gb cards formatted with fat, I guess fat32, currently with no issues

    • @chrisalexthomas
      @chrisalexthomas Год назад

      @@StacemanFPV ah wait! you mean the external module for hdzero, that lets you plug into your old goggles and fits on the front like a pair of goggles, for your goggles (sup dawg, I heard you like goggles...) I wonder what the external module uses for it's embedded operating system.
