Always use the black wire split loom to protect your cables from abrasions especially underneath. I've found it cheapest at Harbor Freight

After seeing so
many sockets mounted on the side, after watched thus it occurred to me that there’s less chance of cargo banging into them where you mounted them
. Side benefit , and yeah, easy to access . Planning this for my Colorado. Already have a battery box with various plugs, containing a 100ah LifePo4 battery , but I want an alternator 12v source while driving . I’ll probably set mine for ignition on, but might hook one up constant to charge a phone etc. while sitting

Protect those wires underneath the car with split wire loom tubing. Number one cause for a fire in overland vehicles is wires rubbing unprotected on metal.

I have the same auxilary fuse box laying around that I've been wanting to install in my silverado but I've been putting it off since I can't really figure out a good place to mount it that won't be in the way. But I've got some lights and and bed outlet like this I wanna install in the next month or so, so I need to install the fuse box. Great video

Probably the #1 wiring failure over time is butt connectors. To be fair this was a good job and the heat shrink will hold it all together nicely. 🌴👍👍😎🌴
Instead of doing that 3 to 1 connection you should Bridge the terminals on the accessories.

Pretty Cool, gunna end up doing this, but.. when it comes to wiring.. always loom any wires outside of vehicle .. and solder and heat shrink your connections.. butt connectors fail, but all in all.. great idea!
Yeah soldering is ideal. I actually just started using those all in one heat shrink/solder connectors and I'm pretty impressed with them.
Instead of the 8ga connector. You could have ran your leads to the first accessory and then jumped them to the next and so on. Either way. Great install!

Good video, good explanations, but you might want to expand on why you popped a 15A fuse, what caused it and what you did remedy the situation. ;).. that would valuable well. But well done. ;)

To protect those exposed terminals, you should use dielectric grease to inhibit corrosion.

Great idea absolutely love it. Don't know why you couldn't put it where you originally wanted to though couldn't you offend the wires in from the top all the way down and then run it along your frame you wouldn't have had to get your hands up in there if you came from the top not sure what I would be missing would love to know
It definitely could be done, it would have been a pain in my ass though and I just don't have the patients 😄. I don't regret where I put it, it's been working fine and it's easy to access from standing at the tailgate.
If you want it in the sidewall just cut a single hole that everything can slide into drop your wires and screw the face plate down
Hi there, thanks for the video covers a lot of what I want to do to my truck. Did you check out the draw in amps that the wire you chose can take? Are you running these wires from a second battery upfront? I will look for the video you did on the fuse box, that looks nice and neat as well.
I haven't checked the amp draw, haven't really had any issues though. As far as the battery, my truck already had two starting batteries so I just kept it stock with the low voltage disconnect. I would recommend having two batteries or at the very least a low voltage disconnect if you are running anything to your starting battery.
@@AmateurAtBest Thanks for the reply, I will follow your advise and have the low voltage disconnect, but my second battery will be a deep cell in the tray with plugs for the fridge, lights ETC. It was good to see what you did to get a clear picture in my mind of how to go about it. Cheers
Some helpful advice. When you put music on a video put it at -16 to -18 on the volume or gain level in whatever editing software you're using so its not so loud and when you talk you can drop it down to -25. Those are the best levels to use for video.

Hi thank you for your videos I ordered a Leer topper for my 2500HD Silverado with the plugs mounted How will they hook them up and should I have a separate battery I want refrigerator on the road and charging for devices
Sorry for the late response. You may consider a second battery if you're running a fridge.
Sue - I'm considering a Jackery 1000 portable power station. Then I'll be running solar to charge it but I will also use the method here to charge it as well. Only difference being ill wire the car charger outlet as to only be hot when ignition is on. Solar charging the Jackery when car is off and 12v charging the Jackery when the car is on..... The dometic fridge will stay plugged into the Jackery the entire trip.
I have a 2020 silverado with a plug in the back that I have yet to use. Hahaha, haven't really needed it.. yet. 👍

Do you mean a standard 120v home socket? That will have to be run through an inverter. I do wire one in but it's in the cab. A 600 watt.

Hi, first off great job! I want to do something similar to this with my work truck.
I am curious though, so are the constantly powered, or did you also splice into the ignition wire- so they are only on when the ignition is on?
I wired it straight to the fuse panel I installed so it is constantly powered.
Marking the screw holes then drilling and tapping a couple of screws makes it a lot easier to do this job. Then just mark center on the main holes and use a holesaw. Takes a little more prep but run time is actually shorter and you don’t screw up as easily. Just a piece of advice.

Hi, nice video. I ordered the 3 outlets and it already came in prewired on the back of the connectors with terminals at the end but it’s way too short to reach into the battery. Should i cut the terminals and connect a 12 gauge stranded wire or 14 gauge? I believe the prewire is 14 gauge. Idk much electrical work. Thanks
I personally would go with the biggest gage possible (smaller number). The longer you run a wire, the more important it is to have a bigger wire.
The longer the "run" (length of continuous wire) is the bigger the wire you will need. Most common is 12ga for a run from bumper to bumper for something like this.
Dam i really like that. I have a 2019 ram 1500 classic and sadly it only came with 1 12v outlet in the cabin by the gear knob and it is only on while the truck is on.. looking for an alternative to have it constant on. Any suggestions?
Yeah that's the issue with that inverter. If you want 110-120v constant, you'll have to wire up your own inverter. I did that and put it under the back seat.

Excellent job man. I'm going to install a 12v acc in the trunk of my 2022 Toyota Altis as I have intentions of running a 35 litre TWW alpicool fridge freezer.
I've bought a Toyota OEM wiring loom specifically though which allows me to plug directly onto the back of the factory fitted 12v acc in the small compartment under the front armrest. From there I'll run the cable under carpet and behind trim into the trunk.
My intentions will be to place the new 12v acc outlet in a convenient place in one of the rear trunk side panels to keep it looking factory OEM.

@@AmateurAtBest yes I took the same route when I installed DIY the OEM ambient ice blue interior lighting, all Toyota OEM and my 5yr vehicle warranty was unaffected. Really easy fitting it too and looks amazing at night.

No reason, a chassis ground should work just fine. I ran the double cable just because that's how my brain likes it, lol.
Is there a reason that you couldn't have used your original location on the side of the box merely by dropping the wire down from the outlet mounting holes, then running the wire to the front of the truck for connection to the power source?
Yeah that's what I was going to do originally but I wouldn't be able to unplug and swap out the outlets very easily. Thus is a much better location for me.
so my question is how well is it holding up . I have had friends wire up similar setups and after a year all of the switches are so corroded they don't work. salt will find its way up there if you live in snow country.
So far so good. We don't recieve too much snow, maybe a foot or two a year, but nothing had corroded yet.
You could dab some grease around the connectors. Lithium or axel grease or Vaseline etc.
Nope don't use regular grease. Use Dielectric grease
Where did you get the screws for you C clamp on the bed of your truck?
I don't have those anymore but those are the clamps that came with the Vanguard aluminum ladder rack.

Did you use landscape lighting wire?
I'm not sure if it was landscape wire or not. It's 12 gage stranded wire from lowes. It didn't specify a use case.

Thanks for the video. Have you noticed any issues with the 12ga wire? I would think you would need 10ga supply from the Fuze block?
I have not had any issues at all, the 12 gage has worked great.
The 110v wire in your house is only 14g.
Jack D not all. There’s 12ga also for stoves, water heaters , ovens etc.

Yeah the 220v wire is 12g. Sometimes even heavier. That’s why I specified the 110v wire.
@@jackd2083 ...your house also has 12, 10, or even bigger gauge wire depending on what it's servicing. Same holds true here.
skip those 8 awg butt connectors on the 12 awg and just use female quick disconnect terminals, daisy chained. Less splice points and less possibilities to lose a connection.

Yes, the blue readout stays on constantly but I have not noticed a drain on the battery at all.

I haven't had an issue, everything is still running great as of today. I did move my fridge and put another outlet on the other side. Just one outlet with strait 12 gage wire. The original one I use for charging devices and running fans.

I installed a single 12V outlet in bed and ran dedicated 12GA wire to truck battery with inline 30A fuse before battery terminal connect. The plug powers phone charger bit will note power my 12 V Igloo Cooler (which was main reason I did this mod). Any suggestions? It's approx 20ft run. Too much voltage drop with 12GA and long run? Appreciate any feedback or solutions. Thanks
That's interesting, it should work. I have 3 outlets now that I've installed (2 in the bed and 1 in the cab) and the they all run my fridge just fine. What type of wire did you use?

I would say no. If you have the caps off, there's no gasket to keep water out.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'end connector'. Are you referring to the blade connectors?

Yes, these outlets are 12v.
Do you need to run the truck while you're using the fridge?
Not at all, with the batteries I have it keeps the fridge going for hours on end.

Instead of running 3 wires off your main wire, why wouldn't you run one wire to the plug and then run the wires in series to the positive/negative to each plug

I don't think you understand series wiring. Pos to neg is series, parallel is pos to pos, neg to neg

You probably could. I guess it depends on what your powering. I actually had run another dedicated 10 gauge just for the fridge.

also im wiring some stuff up but my rocker switch is like reversed. You turn the stuff on the switch is in the off position with the light facing up and the blank ide down. when you put the light down and the blank side up the stuff shuts off. any ideas?
Yes 12.1, because of the low voltage disconnect. The polarity in your wiring may be reversed?

I didn't do a video, it's just a single 12v outlet. I did everything the same but I ran the 12 gage wire directly to a single outlet.

You could have done it in the original location with fishing tools. You can go to Home Depot and they have a small 10’ fish tape that would have worked perfect for that type of job. Just sayin.

Is there a way to find a grounding point in the back of the bed instead of running it to the front?

I have a 600w inverter in the cab for when I need 110v-120v. I really have no need for anything other than 12v in the bed. Plus it's more simple given the truck is a 12v system.
@@blakeday9364 the battery can handle it for a short time you need to figure out how to invert the power to 120 before it gets back there
