Freezer door has those little side shelves. I store my buttons, craft supplies mementos in them...you can display too.
Lots of Farmers Markets and local stands off the roads in the country areas here but it can be a hit and miss with pricing.

My bulk store is a chain and not cheap for most things. But I think it's the best way to buy spices because you can spend 50 cents and get enough of a spice/herb to cook a few meals. I do this for the less-used spices. That way I own a wide variety but I don't have to invest $3.99 in a jar of a spice i'll never use up. For common spices and herbs I use a lot, i'll buy the packets at the grocery store rather than jars. I can get a large packet of garlic powder for instance for $2, enough to last a year. The international section of grocery stores is also a great place to find not only spices common to a specific cuisine but also cross-cultural things like garlic. Very large packets for cheap.

Hi again, You were in my back yard again. I shop at all those stores you visited. I am only a few minutes away from all of them. I get the 50cent bread and separate it into 2 slices and baggie it and freeze in the original bag and pull one little baggie out as I need bread. I also get the cheeses and lunch meats at Centerville as well. They also carry jars and lids. At Christmas Centerville has all the needed baking things, candied citrus, cherries all the things to make fruit cakes. They carry whoopie pies and home made bread there also. I got beets and did them in my instant pot and they were delicious. I think you can also get the icing for whoopies, already made and ready to use. Glad you visited us again. Come back soon.

Hello! Boy howdy I’m coveting those beets. I’ve never tried the greens but will now. As for the beets, I “roast” them in my crockpot until tender and eat them cold with goat cheese. Oh my! I’ve been fascinated with the Amish most of my life. There are several communities in Ohio and have taken many many day trips through the various areas. My father-in-law was raised Mennonite and my mother-in-law grew up in Amish country. We don’t visit the area very often because my husband works near Amish country (he’s got an hour commute to work one way) so for him, it’s not a unique day trip. My basil is really producing. I made homemade basil mayonnaise the other day. And I also pulse it with the broth and freeze it in ice cube trays which I then store in freezer bags. Thanks for sharing all of this and your brother with us. His cameos are gold.

One great thing that you can do with your food saver lid attachment is to make up fresh salad, put some in pint or quart sized jars, and vac seal to keep fresh in the fridge so that you can grab them all week for lunches.
I love to shop in bulk, but sadly we don't have any bulk stores within a reasonable distance from where we live. I do buy in bulk online and I find it simple to compare prices and find the best price for the quality of item that we want.
We have 3 people who regularly live in our home. Our oldest daughter stays with my Mom (5 miles from us) and she is here now and then, too. When I bulk shop, I keep in mind the 3 'regulars' in our home, plus our daughter and my Mom...and even our son and his family. When we're topped off we can share with others, plus I cook freezer meals for my Mom and daughter. I keep 5 gallon buckets of staples like flour, sugar, popcorn, oats, etc. and I feed into our kitchen supply from those.
This is helpful when "Murphy" (Murphy's Law) shows up. Last November we had the Virus and were at home for 2 straight weeks before we ventured back out. We had everything we needed at home, including medicines (which I mostly make...herbal meds), toiletries, and food. It proved peace of mind for us again when my husband was denied pay at his job for the time he was off due to the Virus. His loss of pay came just before Christmas, which was rough, but we knew we'd be ok with essentials.
    God bless

Our ShopRites here sell local produce and the prices are more reasonable. I'm sure your ShopRite does as well. I'll splurge every now and then on some good tomatoes & corn but not often. Loved seeing Sam again. What nice treats he brought! I know suggestions should be emailed but how about a "Sam's Spotlight" segment? Lol! It doesn't even have to be about frugality. A local farm gave our church some fresh produce there was a lot of rainbow chard no one would hardly take it because no one knew how to cook it so I ended up taking most of it and I cooked it with leftover bacon grease, garlic, onion, and a little bell pepper it was delicious!! I froze the rest so it didn’t spoil!

I have been purchasing lots of produce at local farmers market.. beets, peaches, Kale, tomatoes etc. . I have frozen some and ate some as my garden is not ready yet. I did recently freeze beet greens for soups and stew in winter!!

How lucky are you guys to live near the Amish community! I also use a ton of mason jars for everything. Would you mind sharing the brand of food saver you use and also have you ever used your food saver for squash or zucchini. Blessings to you both

I cook rainbow chard the same way as you cook beet greens, except that I finely chop onion and cook it with the stalks, then add the greens as you do. Delicious.

Your vacuum seal round lid isn't for removing air from jars, it pairs with a storage canister that appears to be missing. Glad you had such a good time down here (I live not far from Lancaster) and made some great purchases.

What an awesome video! I loved seeing your Lancaster hauls. Sam is great! What nice treats he gave you! It really stinks but here in the city we don’t have any bulk stores and the few stores who offer a few things in bulk are really expensive. Also the Farmers’ Markets in the city are super expensive. If I am going to my mom and dad’s house in Maine, there is a farm I stop at to get meats and veggies. They are more expensive than the grocery store but they are farm grown and produced right on site. I only do that a couple of times a year. If I’m traveling through any of the smaller towns and I see a farm stand w/ good prices I’ll go there. But as far as what we have in my city, everything is far more expensive than the grocery store, sadly.

    I wish I could learn to like cooked greens….I just can’t 😞
But…..my hens LOVE them, so that lessons my guilt as I toss them to them, turning beet greens into eggs 😀

You and Paul were visiting our neck of the woods, Yes, we are fortunate to live near the farm stands, farmers markets and mennonite and amish grocery outlets. Happy you made the trip. Love seeing the amish farms and their laundry hanging high on their unique washlines.

Hi Emmy and Paul! We Love the Lancaster area as well and have a trip scheduled for early September ! I love to stock up at the stores and have a few favorite stops. We Love a little diner called Katie’s kitchen (Mennonite run) in Ronks. The food is fabulous, all homemade and the prices are amazing! Thx for sharing all the great tips!

My very closest friend lives in Lancaster Pennsylvania and I do make the occasional bulk store trip when I go to see her. We have a lot of farmers stands where we live, since I am in a pretty rural area. And our prices are pretty comparable to those stands near my friend. However, if I want to get corn for freezing I always order through the Amish and Mennonite farms because they usually sell in bulk and it keeps the prices per dozen very low. Interesting fact, and the Amish and old order Mennonites in Lancaster County are running out of generational farmland. They have actually started moving into northern parts of Maryland where I live. And we have the horse and buggy road signs starting to pop up. Hopefully in a season or two we will see their farm stands as well.
