      @@cyanjackson7689 Thing you need to take into account is that -compared- to people’s faces with make up (wether the person with make up on is a boy or a girl) people look more tired or even ill, its not that people don’t think men don’t have eye bags, it’s that when you continuously cover up all the things on your face with things that “perfect” your face and cover things like pale lips, the uneven colors on your face, the eye bags under the eyes, etc. with make up and you show how you look with make up all the time, then suddenly don’t, people are naturally going to think you look different, maybe even sick, if you rarely ever wore make up, people wouldn’t think that.
      The thing you need to realize is that the face of men and women naturally looks entirely normal, it’s in reality not a tired look or a sick look, but when you put on and wear make up on a daily basis, you are making that what everyone sees on average basis, your making that your ‘normal’ look.
      When you cover up those normal “imperfections” and almost always show yourself with very even skin (by using foundation) and lips that are pinker then your natural lip color (using lipstick) and cheeks pinker then your normal cheeks (using blush)and so on, people are going to see that as how you normally look, if you suddenly don’t wear your make up and show up with dark circles, paler lips then what your lips usually look like and paler cheeks then your cheeks with make up, it’s no surprise some wonder if your feeling unwell.

      I got called out for this by my first manager at a retail store. I was told I didn't look happy and they suggested I wear some makeup. I wore it, I just didn't wear it everyday. That was almost 10 years ago and I still think about what he said to me. The thing is, you don't owe it to anyone to wear makeup to cover yourself to make them more comfortable. You don't need to wear it to detract from any of your uniqueness, or what society decides is a flaw. It's entirely on them, how they desire to see people. It's not your responsibility to please others like that. I like makeup. I definitely don't do it as much as I used to. I'm okay leaving the house without it. But I still like to play with it now and then. The difference now is that I don't wear it to make other people more comfortable while looking at me. That's the only big change I've realized in the last few years. And somedays that's easier to acknowledge than other days. I shouldn't have to wear makeup for the sole purpose of hiding what I think people will judge me on. I choose to be judged on my bare face, because *that is me.*

    Ben seems to be simplifying this a bit. Like, "maybe when you start a new job don't look too different" - Well, knowing women who are more attractive are also judged as more competent and more successful makes things a bit more complicated. It would be great if we weren't judged on our looks in our career, but we are. But, of course, if we wear too much makeup, we're judged too. It's a tough thing for women.

    Not a direct comment on anything you said in this clip, more of a thought I have whenever I witness a discussion about women's relationship to makeup. No doubt, a lot of women and men wear makeup as a form of self expression, and I think it can be a beautiful and powerful artform, but often I feel like this argument is used to ignore the fact that there is a lot of pressure for women to wear makeup. I think it's important to acknowledge that even though makeup can be a form of self expression, we are influenced by a society that tells us we don't look quite right if we decide to go makeup-free. Our decisons aren't made in a vacuum, and it doesn't have to be either "it's my personal artform" or "societal pressure made me do it". I think that in many cases it's a combination of the two.

      @Kristal Power your comment kinda contradicts itself. The equivalent of women having to wear makeup for work for men is them keeping a clean face and shaving or not growing their hair long. It really does send a message on how you look at work especially when you’re dealing with the public. It’s all about looking nice and clean

    • @Zeldagirlartist
      @Zeldagirlartist 3 года назад +2

      @Kristal Power actually no it’s also a requirement for men in a lot of higher up positions where they need to look good and shaved. When girls don’t wear makeup they usually look tired, sick, or just uninterested altogether so I get why it’s a requirement when you have to deal with customers or clients. It really is the same thing. I could complain that women have it easy because they can wear their hair long and men can’t and that isn’t fair which would be like what you’re trying to argue. It’s all the same. Men shaving is the equivalent to makeup, and it’s not like you’re being asked to put a full face of makeup on either.

    • @MondayMorningMist
      @MondayMorningMist 3 года назад +35

      @@Zeldagirlartist "When girls don’t wear makeup they usually look tired, sick, or just uninterested altogether " well not really, Cristine makes a point to this around 4:50 in the video. Its not that literally all female humans look more tired or sick without makeup. It's that if a certain girl wears make up a lot, people get used to seeing her with makeup on so she looks "tired" or "sick" to them if she's bare-faced. If that particular girl never wore makeup, people would likely get used to her looking that way, and would no longer think she looks tired or sick. However, a lot of people are in society are used to women in general, wearing makeup, which is why these requirements get pushed onto women who don't really want to wear it.
      Also no, I feel like saying that makeup and beards are the same is drawing a false equivalency. Let me give an example. In the military, everyone must look clean tidy and proper. Do you see makeup being a requirement there for women, despite professionalism being a requirement there? No, because makeup is not necessary for the job, and military women still look professional and groomed without makeup. You don't hear people saying that military women are looking tired, sick or uninterested. Men keeping their beards shaved in the military is more equivalent to women (who have long hair) having to keep their long hair in tight buns, due to the safety hazard issue that Kristal Power already mentioned. I understand your point about workplace dress code and grooming requirements making sense for jobs where you need to deal with customers, but I still disagree with you that "it's all the same," since that's a hyperbolic, widely broad generalization that glosses over relevant details.

    • @Zeldagirlartist
      @Zeldagirlartist 3 года назад +2

      @@MondayMorningMist when I say “all the same” I say that meaning that these types of things all fall into the same category of looking professional and clean. Those of course are going to be applied differently to different jobs but they are all part of the same idea, which like I said is keeping clean and looking professional. They may not all apply at once for a specific job but in essence yes they are the same
      Also the idea of girls looking sick or tired when they don’t wear makeup is exactly what you said: it’s because we are used to girls wearing makeup so somebody not wearing makeup is gonna look tired or sick. That’s just the expectation of society so that is why it is expected in many professional settings. Dark circles are usually a problem with people and especially when girls aren’t covering them up then it causes them to look tired or sick. That’s just a body issue

And with makeup brands picking up on this and releasing more bright and costume-y and themed products it is far from the form of 'natural enchancement' it used to be. However I'm mainly speaking about the younger generation here in America. I know in the East/ Asia and other countires mainstream makeup still usually takes on a more faux natural approach.

    Absolutely my thesis: I never wear make up for work but I love to do my make up just because I love to have special moments
    And that’s why everybody is excited for our company parties because they know I’ll look special again (clothes, jewelry and make up - but never foundation!) and new people won’t recognize me.
    Not because I’m ugly on my daily base but because I look normal and people don’t think I’m into Beauty and overly woman stuff.

Curl your eyelashes and use a waterproof mascara to keep the shape (so your lashes don't droop after a few minutes). Wait for it to dry completely and apply a non waterproof mascara for some extra length. (I personally only use the waterproof mascara because my lashes are naturally pretty long.) But - to me at least - how much cross questioning or pressing arises with regards to people who insist that they really DO indeed use makeup for fun and self expression feels a bit suspect, and I kind of perceive that as a resistance to fully accepting the possibility that makeup actually CAN BE a means of artistic expression, outside of public pressure. I was quite upset, but I did it. In time, though, I started wearing less and less formal clothes (but still clean and ironed etc obviously), wearing flats, and putting on less make up. Especially now, during the quarantine, I have minimized make up to just lipstick (to not seem "dead" when on camera).

      @@koolkatkimina9 In my experience the older doctors have failed me and made my health worse because they care more about money. Younger doctors are different, I suspect the internet has supported humans to grow more empathy because we have the ability to connect more easily. As more humans get online the species will change so much to adapt to these rapid changes we have never encountered in our few hundreds of thousands of years on earth. I think we need more perspective like acknowledging how we are young compared to other species we respect less but we are starting mass extinctions for what? Those super educated people are def part of the humility issue humanity has. Our system is corrupt and the longer they are in it the more easily a person is corrupted.
      I say this because in 2015 I was beaten unconscious and the brain damage gave me severe MS that forced me to be home bound since then, the more isolated I am focusing on emotional growth for myself and everyone I impact the more I grow and see how sick I was. The perspective shift has been profound and painful. I see such toxicity that I am grateful that I found ways to work towards transforming my challenges into opportunities because running or denial just blinds us to reality. I now see that the USA has 300 mil people who do not all live in the same reality at all, the world even more and if we don’t adapt to how humans actually work we will continue this extinction event until nothing is left. Once the billionaires kill the rest of us who will be left to support them because they do not do the most of the work that our economy needs to run in a healthy way. We are letting them exterminate us for money and its very likely that is why all these weird health issues are escalating with the laws relaxing towards toxic dumping and creating toxins to sell without telling people its deadly like teflon. We have a right to be mad when our boundaries are disrespected and I feel a need to tell you that for some reason. I send you love and anyone reading this because we have all been violated without consent and that is what I think we should expand to see as a toxic chemical type of rape to our bodies that harms us.
      I also developed a meth addiction after my drs taught me that when I have flashbacks of being raped (which they didn’t make me fee comfortable enough to be honest about until 15 years after.) When I couldn’t pay attention in school they cared more about shutting me up than nurturing me to grow healthier. So I ended up on a dose of adderall that because of kids like me is now illegal to give to minors. If one treatment doesn’t work upping the dose is not the only answer adding or changing course of treatment is far better and I did that and now feel more mentally stable than the establishment way of thinking can get you.

    I’m 62. Don’t own any makeup (including nail polish) & have never bought any myself. I did have my makeup professionally done for my daughter’s wedding 7.5 years ago. Wow, very expensive & time consuming. I conceded because it was for my daughter. The false eyelashes fell off after about 2 hrs because they were annoying & I thought there was something in my eye so I wouldn’t leave them alone. You couldn’t tell in the pics that I even had makeup on.
    The last time I bought any makeup was when I needed clear nail polish to stop runs in my pantyhose. Don’t wear those anymore either. Overall, makeup is too expensive. I would rather be able to pay my living expenses & the occasional treat.

    I worked as an ophthalmic technician for a group of doctors a few years back and I remember them being upset that when I came into work, I didn't always do up my hair and makeup like I did for my interview. They said it was false advertising to present yourself one way during an interview and then not keep that up once you got the job. I remember that genuinely hurt my feelings. My employers were basically telling me that despite being a hard and efficient worker that got rave reviews from patients, I wasn't worth as much as the other girls who woke up an hour before me to do their hair and makeup. Keep in mind that I still wore makeup to work but just chose not to do a full face because it didn't seem necessary and I'd rather get more sleep. It's one thing for your boss to tell you that you need to work harder. It's a completely different thing for your boss to tell you you're ugly.

    I haven’t been able to wear makeup for many years. My mom once told me that it was rude to make people see my pimples by not wearing makeup. But the makeup and other allergies were part of why my skin was bad. Thankfully I’m comfortable not wearing makeup now for an average day but I still feel like I’m judged and it doesn’t go well with dressy/formal attire.

    I don't usually wear makeup. I will for special occasions to "look nice" and I really wish I was better at makeup so that I could feel like I was artistically expressing myself but it just isn't worth it to me. I have horrible contact dermatitis and putting the wrong thing on any part of my body could cause a rash or hives. For instance, can't put anything under my eyes or I get a bad rash that burns for days. But I also have horrible acne (fully grown adult acne :c) and it's a constant struggle to want to put on concealer or foundation to hide the acne but by putting anything on my face, it makes the acne worse. Plus, I don't know about you but my makeup smears through the day anyway and I end up looking more tired than if I were not wearing it in the first place!

    Hi Cristine, I had a similar issue as a teenager: I suddenly became allergic to eye makeup and I couldn't use mascara and shadows. I am now in my early thirties and I occasionally wear a bit of BB cream, but not much else. Although it was quite frustrating at first to not be able to have fun with palettes and stuff, years later, my priorities have completely changed. I focus on my skin being healthy. I enjoy a more "minimalistic" approach (finding the ultimate moisturizer and so on). I hope you'll find a similar type of fulfilment. You have gorgeous skin, just let it shine! (well not in a oily way hahaha)

    I used to work in a salon where we are required to wear a full face of make up. My skin couldn't handle it after a while, it became really sensitive, applying anything other than face wash or cream to my face made my skin feel raw and tingly. So I gradually reduced the amount of make up I wore til it was just some eyeliner, mascara, a light dusting of eyeshadow and lipstick and I was getting complimented on my rosy complection and healthy skin.
    Makeup is a complicated thing, I keep it for special occasions or just to play around with colours.

    In high school I always wore makeup without fail. Then somewhere between high school and age 25 I just stopped and I don't know why. Only wearing it for pictures or special occasions. I got married at 30 and my husband thank the Lord doesn't like makeup so I really only wear it if we are getting dressed up or are going somewhere that the occasion calls for it (a wedding, etc). I turn 50 next year (talk about old lady) and I can tell you that I've worn makeup once in 5 years. Last year for my high school reunion 80s night. Had to bring out the blue eyeshadow and light blue mascara. Some people have to put on their face to go ojtside, others feel comfortable in the one God gave them. Glad you're able to get past having to wear it.

    Totally understand, I've had issues too (makeup gave me headaches and irritability) wasn't until my skin started turning grey from deodorant (that I noticed I might be suffering from over exposure to aluminum.. my body was poisoned by the unnatural ingredients)
    Aluminum is the main ingredient in all brand name deodorant and the ingredient in most makeup such as eyeshadow..
    Anyway, the metals stay in the body a long time (especially if used on a daily basis) so it took a year of not using any makeup products and changing my deodorant to a natural nontoxic with no aluminum.. to finally get my skin back to a normal color..
    (Though I also see a dermatologist for psoriasis I later developed in my twenties.. so if you have skin issues? It's best to see a dermatologist.. )
    Also I try to use natural nontoxic makeup. And don't keep old makeup that can hold bacteria.. so best to clean brushes every time you apply and throw out makeup after it's expired..

    omg i learnt the whole if you consistantly wear makeup then dont one day, everyone thinks your dying in school, when a girl who wore thick black eyeliner everyday didnt once. Since then I have always been conscious of not wearing makeup too often. but I do the typical concealer and mascara everytime I go to my part time job, and I am so aware of the fact I can never miss a day now. Its sad because women are told you must put on some makeup to be presentable but also live your natural life, but wearing makeup, makes your natural self look ill/tired.

    I’m only 13 but I love wearing makeup because I get to be creative with it. A lot of people at my school will accuse me of looking for attention or trying to be someone I’m not by wearing makeup even though that’s not the case. I only wear very bold looks at home. When I go to school I wear concealer to color correct, light foundation, blush, a touch of highlighter, mascara and a light shimmer on my eyes, so a very natural look. I haven’t worn makeup in a few weeks and i really miss putting it on lol. A similar thing happened to me where my eyes got super puffy from old mascara and I’ve had some ptsd from that 😭 but I totally get where you’re coming from with the whole “you look so tired” thing when we don’t have concealer on. So frustrating.

    • @Kahsjwjdb

      I think that is the main problem here. When someone "not so pretty" decides to give up make up It should be normal and respected, it should not be just for pretty women to do it to be seen as something acceptable. A stunning woman would look amazing with or without makeup and that is easy to digest for the society in general. But, average women should feel comfortable doing it even if they do not reach those beauty standards and people should not have a word on that just because they are not "pretty enough" to walk around without makeup. I am an average girl myself and I know I don't look similiar to any super model, but I like to believe I have the same right and even confidence to walk around without makeup showing my average face, 'cause that is just normal.

    • @blessedpandagirl

    I used to always make sure I have “good makeup” on when going to job interviews to contribute to making a good first impression but you’re right about people expecting you to look a certain way if that’s your “norm” and if you do anything outside of that “norm” then something must be wrong. I’ve definitely experienced this myself but on the same token, I’ve also been guilty of assuming people must have something irregular going on in their lives if their appearance is out of the ordinary. I think that’s just the way we’re wired to think, that our brains sort of associate the difference in one’s appearance to irregularity because appearance is the first insight we get into a person’s life and therefore, the first thing we make comment on. At this point, I don’t think anyone is evil for thinking no makeup equals sick/tired or too much makeup must mean you’re going somewhere, we just need to be aware of the flaws in our logical deduction process and try not to fall for the trap of assumption. I hope it makes sense.
    Edit: also if someone does make these comments about your appearance just please don’t take it to heart or let it get to you. They most likely are not aware of this phenomenon and don’t know that they’re hurting your feelings or offending you. It’s important to figure out whether they have good or bad intentions with their comments in situations like these before getting upset or taking offense. Just my two cents 🤷🏻‍♀️

    There was a time where I was so reliant on the security makeup gave me, that if I had to go in public or someone saw me without makeup I would panic, sometimes even cry. I felt I needed it due to my acne at the time but also just in general to be pretty enough. My acne eventually got so bad I had no choice but to stop wearing it and go on medication and being forced to stop wearing foundation particularly, something I relied on so much ended up being really liberating. It forced me to realise I don’t need it. Now my skin is pretty clear and I can rarely be bothered putting on makeup. I prefer how I look with makeup on, but I’m no longer bordering on a panic attack when I’m in public without it.

  • @AmberKingmusic

    The main problem stems from the fact we try to look our best in an interview and people hire that look and don't think that maybe that's not what we look like on the day to day just like we don't look the same at our prom, or wedding, or any other special event where photos are needed. There is always a difference between our everyday look and a special event, even for those people who look perfect and put together daily they still do different things for special events. I grew up with a mom who never wore makeup and this was a blessing and a barrier to push through. I love the fact I never felt the need to wear makeup because my mom didn't, she is the type to only wear makeup or do her hair for special events (dates with my dad, Christmas parties, holidays, etc) but when I wanted to get into doing my makeup when I was a teen my mom knew nothing I had to figure it out on my own thankfully I had youtube and now I have taught my mom to do makeup. Today I don't wear any makeup unless I feel like it, even for holidays and events if I don't feel like it I'm not wearing anything but chapstick on my face, I might put in the effort for wearing my contacts (I used to wear contacts daily until I realized I'm lazy and glasses are easier to wear when you nap often.) I can only do my makeup if I put in my contacts because my lashes touch my lenses and already streak them with oil I don't need to have them streaked with mascara plus I can't see enough to put my makeup on without my contacts or glasses

    Everyone is beautiful without make-up, society just made us think we aren't. I think it's very toxic that we think this way about women (needing make-up to look pretty) but not about men. I never hear someone complain to men that 'they need make-up because they aren't pretty’! I'm all for it if you do wear make-up, don’t get me wrong, but just make it your own choice. Do not wear it to make others see you’re beautiful, ‘cause you already are!! Beauty is defined by sooo much more than just the way you look.

    Personally I think some people say “you look tired” or “are you sick” isn’t a negative comment (most of the time), it’s just because they can’t figure how it why your face looks different. When someone wears or do something all the time, and change happens our brains naturally want to go “this could be dangerous”. Doesn’t make not wearing or wearing makeup good or bad, same for glasses and also doesn’t make the negative commentary bad or good. There brain is just figuring out what’s different.

    I think there is also something to be said for people to view makeup as an extension to their daily style and outfits. Just like they like to dress a certain way every day, they like to wear a certain makeup look. And just like they might not feel like themslves if they didn't dress in their usual style, they wouldn't feel like themslves in a different makeup look or no makeup. Not that they feel 'ugly' without it or like they need it, they'd just feel off without it. Like Christine probably feels without having her nails painted.

    Makeup is such an interesting point of heated discussion when you look at it over the course of history. In victorian times it was considered a big no-no and something only 'professional' girls did. there was huge pressure to not wear makeup. then you got times like WW2 when wearing bright red lipstick was seen as a sign of patriotism in the US. You got the 50s and 60s where whole tutorial courses were given for women on how to appear 'proper and done up' in office (only for their typist job of course). Then you got the late 60s and 70s with a whole new wave of a more natural style (high fashion was going heavy on the makeup, but the whole flower power culture was very low on it).
    Lisa Eldridge did a fascinating video on these changes throughout history.
    It seems to go pretty much in waves what is considered 'empowered' to wear or not to wear makeup. One time society tells you to 'not do it' or you're loose, one time it tells you to absolutely 'do it' or you're a slob.
    At the end of the day I think it's up to every woman to decide. The question if makeup is empowering or not is really just a question about a woman's motivation. Is it out of her own accord, fun and interest, then makeup is very much empowering. Is it because she feels she HAS TO wear it to be accepted and to please others, that's pretty sad.
    At the moment I feel we're kind of in a in between phase of societal expectations. It's not like the 50s where there's a full idea how you're supposed to look when you appear in office (cause that would be pretty politically incorrect), but society does have these plenty of small little daily nudges of making women feel uncomfortable about themselves ('Oh, are you tired? Are you ill? You look pale today.' etc). As a 37 year old woman I have to say such 'well-meaning nudges' come mostly from other women, which is indeed a bit disheartening. Thank God, I arrived at an age where I can look people dead-pan in the face an answer 'Nope, this is just my face.' and enjoy the ensuing cringy awkwardness IN THEM!
    Doesn't mean I don't still enjoy wearing makeup on many days. Makeup is fun to me and a way to elevate my own mood in a lot of ways. But I don't feel a compulsion anymore to wear it whenever I come in front other people like I did especially as a teenager or increasingly in my late 20s when the 'you look tired' comments increased (well, duh, yeah, I work full-time, what do you expect?). Now if anyone thinks me stepping 'bare-faced' in front of them somehow entitles them to unsolicited commentary about my looks, I'm sure to make them feel uncomfortable about it and enjoy it too :p

    I have always had sensitive/reactive skin, so I get your dilemma. Over the years I have found skincare and makeup I can wear, but not without lots of pain and discomfort to actually find what works, because to do that you have to deal with and work through the adverse reaction of things that don’t work first 😩 I have found that being in quarantine I haven’t bothered with make up, with my face behind a mask it actually feels the opposite of oppressive, it’s feels liberating! 😂
