    This little thing is called the Evapolar. It's a desktop air conditioner that you can place anywhere without a need to vent it like a traditional air conditioner. It's not as powerful as a standard air conditioner, but it's a cool solution if you need to create a microclimate.
    From the manufacturer -
    Evapolar emulates a similar natural air cooling process unlike most air conditioners that simply create a strong flow of cold dry air that may lead to catching a cold.
    Evapolar captures large particles of dust from the airflow making it easier for you to breathe thus improving your productivity.
    No need for installation - just plug it in and feel the sensation. All you need is a wall socket to immediately feel the cooling effects of this portable air conditioning unit. No screws, drills, or heavy lifting required.

    Are you fucking kidding me. $250 for a swamp cooler? Literally all that is, is a fan and a water pump. I've made those myself for under $20 before. By the way, they only work in dry climates. They perform extremely poorly if the humidity is already high.

      In a house with a dead central a/c unit and rooms that are unbearably hot and humid wouldn't this make things worse? This puts more moisture into the air I would think. That's the opposite of what you'd want if it's an un-air conditioned room, humidity build up + more water pumped into the air by this = even more of an oven room.

    I live in Shanghai, and this little thing reminds me of an interesting story. In 2008 Spain expo, they basically took the physics behind this thing, and replaced air conditioners. There were spays of very thin water at various locations, and it was cool. So two years later designers at Shanghai went, hmmm, looks effective, and they went on to copy it over to 2010 Shanghai expo. And it failed. Pretty dramatically. You see, Shanghai's average humidity is around 75%. Many times it can go up to 80 or 90. Well, when water (and sweat) cant evaporate, those water sprays basically just wetted everyone's cloth even more than they already are. Added to the fact that there were just so many people at Shanghai expo (like, the queue time for the exhibition with the shortest queue, was around one hour. The one with the longest queue has something like 8 hours queue time. Crazy.), every queue was literally a steam room. This is just a simple example that shows the weakness of this technology.

    • @SilverScarletSpider
      @SilverScarletSpider 8 лет назад +4

      Interesting story man. So in the case of the 2010 expo, using a dehumidifier and more fan circulation or a real air conditioner would have been a more effective solution.

    • @scheimong
      @scheimong 8 лет назад +4

      Indeed. Dehumidifiers are pretty popular here in Shanghai. I just went to Yellowstone in US and back. Temperature there once shot up to 42C and it felt pretty much the same as 32C in Shangahi, all because of the humidity difference.

    • @Limitbreakur
      @Limitbreakur 8 лет назад +1

      do you realise that dehumidifier use the exact same tech as an AIR conditioner? the biggest difference is that the AC pumps out the hot air separately while the dehumidifier pushes the hot air back into the room which helps remove water with condensation but also creates more heat than it removes.

    • @scheimong
      @scheimong 8 лет назад +8

      I actually just realized. I get the physics, pretty straight forward. But still, 40C/30% feels better than 30C/80% trust me. =)

    • @Onewolfoc
      @Onewolfoc 8 лет назад +6

      actually its a evaporative cooler as you evaporate water the phase change uses massive amounts of energy (relatively speaking) this is the same principle swamp coolers and PC bong coolers use to cool the water and or air down. if you do it properly you can get up to about 12 deg. delta if the humidity is low enough. Thought he downside is they raise the humidity in the surrounding area.

    • @taronbrown7665

    • @teardowndan5364
      @teardowndan5364 8 лет назад +2

      An AC takes heat out of the cold side's exhaust air and moves it to the hot side's airflow. This thing only has one air inlet and outlet, which means that all of the energy at the inlet must still be at the outlet, albeit in a different form. How does it achieve that with water? Most likely by using an ultrasonic water atomizer: the ultra-fine water droplets get mixed into the airflow by the fan and the evaporation energy (it takes a fair amount of energy for water to go from liquid to gas) is what drops the air temperature.

      @Bob Kennedy Do you understand how air conditioning works?

    • @peaceinoutb
      @peaceinoutb 4 года назад +6

      @Bob Kennedy In simple terms without getting into the phases of the refrigerant the ability to Cool Air Comes from the ability to remove heat from the air before running air over a Coil. The reason you have a compressor on the outside of the house it the fact that it is removing heat from a line of refrigerant that is making contact with the heat spreader and then that now cool line goes back into the AC coil in the furnace supply ductwork and keep using this process until the call of cool air goes away. So when we are making cool air we not not simply making the air colder but removing the heat from it at the outside condenser. If you were to put that condenser in the home it would simply blow hot air into the home as you cool it and the inefficiency of electric motors and such would generate additional heat. Air Conditioning requires you to remove the heat so if you have an all in one "Air Conditioner" the front would blow the cool air but the heat removed would simply radiate off the back. God this was a horrible explanation you might just find a read online to be more organized

    this is nothing more than a high-priced miniature evaporative cooler. it should work alright in areas of low humidity, but if you live in places like Houston or Atlanta or Chicago more Ohio or any of those places where there is relatively high this is not going to do any good. it will just blow soggy air. and at $179 it's the price of a small window unit air conditioner.

    • @_checktease5529
      @_checktease5529 8 лет назад +5

      yes swamp cooler is a slang term used in place of evaporative cooler. it's called an evaporative cooler because warm dry air passes through one or more pads that are saturated with water. as the dry air passes through those pads the water and the pads evaporates causing the air to increase in humidity and at the same time lowering its temperature. evaporative coolers work best in dry climates inside of air-conditioned rooms (where ).don't really need them anyway

  • @AZREDFERN
    @AZREDFERN 7 лет назад +53

    It's a swamp cooler. It passes air through a damp "filter" and the water absorbs heat out of the air. Despite the name, they work best in dry environments. The closer you are to 100% humidity, the water in the device won't be able to absorb heat. It's called a "swamp cooler" because in places like Phoenix AZ, it's 0% humidity and 110f outside. Before an AC was developed that could handle being run 24/7 in an environment that never drops below 90f in the summer, everyone had "swamp coolers" (AC's were too expensive to buy and run too). You would trade 110f and 0% humidity for 80-90f and 50-100% humidity indoors. Hot and humid like a swamp. An "Air Conditioner" is actually a heat exchanger. It has a closed gas loop, compresses the gas outdoors, it gets super hot. Then it passes through a radiator outside, returns to ambient temperature, then returns indoors. The gas is rapidly expanded, becomes ice cold (literally, your freezer works the same way), passes through a radiator indoors, and that's where you get the cold air. Then the gas continues back outside to be compressed and start over. Now, the humidity in air condenses when it gets cold like a sweating beer can. It does this rather well on the cold radiator of an AC because how cold it is plus the surface area. This leaves you with a de-humidifying effect and dry air indoors. A miniature swamp cooler can really take advantage of this, because the air is always near 0% humidity. It's actually a pretty clever device if you already like having a desk fan, but it also can cool the air a few degrees, uses very little power (2.5 to 12.5 watts) and looks pretty nice.

    This is not an airconditioner lol, an airconditioner is a heat pump that can never be placed fully inside a room because needs to "output" the heat outside the room. This just a fkin mini air cooler, it's "technology" is the equivalent of putting a wet sack in front of the fan. You could DIY one youself with a sack/wettable material, a fan and a mini pump for about 35 bucks or less.

    • @rmd2387
      @rmd2387 8 лет назад +6

      And air conditioners also remove condensation whereas this one specifically cools by blowing air across a wet surface and creating more condensation. Evaporative cooling. I could smack the people who decided to put this technology in mini-fridges in hotels.

    • @TheeNathadeous
      @TheeNathadeous 8 лет назад +1

      an air conditioner is a condenser* not a heat pump. a heat pump can be an air conditioner but its not what makes it function, the compressor and condenser do the work its a heat pump because its equipped to handle emergency heat in case your electric furnace happens to go out.

    • @TheeNathadeous
      @TheeNathadeous 8 лет назад +1

      this is simply an electric evaporator that runs as a low pressure chiller

    • @MrRobbPhoenix
      @MrRobbPhoenix 8 лет назад

      +Nathan “Nathadeous” Anderson an airconditioner contains a condenser as one of its components but it is not the condenser alone. the term "heat pump" is more general and applies to many hvac (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) devices used for space heating or space cooling. Evaporative cooling are not considered heat pumps since it differs from typical AC systems which use vapor compression or absorption refrigeration cycles.

    It's just evaporative cooling and it wont work in high humidity area. It works just because the air in your office is dry because of the air conditioning system. Blowing dry & cold air through the thing does making the temperature lower because the evaporation of water took the heat from the dry air and make it more humid.

But it has a speed control for the fan without about 20 different levels (the cheap crap ones have 3 levels) and you can choose the speed (noise) level you like. Up to 5 it's really quiet. I usually have it set about 7. When it's crazy hot you'd accept that noise for the cooling you're getting. I haven't tried it in bedroom I just use it at my home-office desk. A light sleeper would have trouble if the level was above 5. Personally I could sleep through it at max level :-)

      Shut the fuck up smartass. ACs need more space, more power and someone to connect it to the outdoor fan. Or if you can't do these yourself just buy a smaller, more inefficient device like this

    • @adecree
      @adecree 8 лет назад +4

      +Nonou My point is that considering it's smaller, less efficient at cooling air and clearly made of cheaper materials it should also cost less however that isn't the case making it fairly pointless. I don't think anyone in their right mind would spend that for a glorified desk fan unless they work in a sauna, which would actually be too humid for this to work anyway. Probably why it isn't on Amazon anymore.

      +adecree I see your point. But for some people like me its perfect. Since my room is small I don't have the space for a huge ass air conditioner neither do I have the ability to have an air conditioner installed in my room. Since this thing is small enough to have it on my desk I see good reasons in buying it. also the place I work at is hot as hell, so it makes it easy to bring this with me. btw its $180 on their main website evapolar. (still I agree it should cost less)

      A Window AC needs only a window and an outlet to plug it into and costs less than half as much as this piece of junk. It require no special installation. The only types of AC's that require external components and professional installation are Central AC and split duct units. Windows AC's can be installed by anyone over the age of 10 and thats only because anyone younger probably couldn't lift them.

      Hi! We appreciate sharing your experience. However, evaLIGHT is not just a fan that sprays water into the air. There is a cartridge inside the device, which is made of a unique nanomaterial EvaBreeze (provides a strong cooling effect). The cartridge absorbs a large amount of water, the water then spreads evenly on the surface of the cooling pads. When the air blows through the pads, the water evaporates, which makes the air cool down while saturating it with water. There's no heat exhausted as result of the evaporation.

      It just has pleated filter/wick material filling the inside, like an air filter, immersed in a tray of water. Air is blown through the pleats from end to end, rather than through the material like a filter. Probably best to use cheap distilled water to avoid mineral buildup and a need to soak in vinegar periodically. But will need to be cleaned of dust/lint periodically anyway. A drop of soap (for initial wetting) and something antibacterial/antifungal in the water wouldn't hurt also.

      ***** That will work for a little while, and only where it is dry as heck. If the air around is humid, the water won't evaporate as fast therefore, won't cool much. Even if the air is dry, since the water is evaporating into the surrounding room, sooner or later it will be humid enough that it won't work anymore because it is releasing all of that water vapor back into the room it is pulling air from.

PLUS your body temp and whatnot. even as a personal cooling device, it might be better to just buy a bag of ice and place it behind a fan.

      It's pretty much a glorified sponge and a fan. The fan drives air through the sponge, the water in the sponge cools the air as it evaporates. It actually increases humidity in the room, so it's far from and end-all be-all solution, and definitely not to replace an AC, unless you live in desert climate. It's actually potentially very bad for electronics too.

    Lets assume you already have air conditioning and want to add Evapolar to your desk for just little bit more cooling - yes thats possible, but remember - evaporators needs hot, dry air to work, so if your environment is humid - it will be as effective as regular fan.
    Even when operating in perfect conditions, this evaporative cooler is too small to make major change in air temperature, and remember that any heat it absorbs is ultimately released back in to the same space.
    If you take air from outside, then cool it down it remains cool inside, but Evapolar sits in the room so it becomes a humidifier, the longer it works, the more humid the air in the room becomes and the more humid air becomes - less cooling effect you get.

    • @DavidKenny64
      @DavidKenny64 8 лет назад

      Actually, putting cold water in will just be a waste as it will reach room temperature rather quickly. It cools because the water must acquire heat (from the air being blown through it) to evaporate. It's the same way we cool down from sweating. Our perspiration needs to take heat from our skin to evaporate. Humidity also plays a roll. The lower the humidity, the easier the water is able to make the transformation to water vapor. When the air around you is not moving, the higher the humidity gets stuck right next to your skin (from water that just made the transition). This high-humidity air is trapped in a "boundary layer" around us. That is why a small breeze helps cool us as it blows that high-humidity air away from your body, allowing more water to evaporate off of you. You will get very little relief if you are in a high-humidity environment from sweating because there is now low-humidity available to replace the high-humidity air surrounding your skin. The swamp cooler will be less efficient as well, for a slightly different reason, of course.

    I have had One of these ( not this particular One but a much bigger One that works with the same priciple ) and yes , it does cool the air a tiny bit BUT the thing is .. it lets out air with a very high humidity ( cold Water in the air therefor the cooling effect ) and after like 30 min My room felt like a rainforest. Everything was damp and i mean everything ! I dont recommend using it like an Airconditioning . Using it as a fan or to up the humidity , sure but not as your regular AC.

    • @runeviking5770

      I have the same thing. Reservoir on the bottom, water pump pumps water and it drips onto paper filter through which air goes. It all cools down the room, but just slightly bit. The only problem is as you mentioned high humidity. Air becomes so humid that you can't breathe normally. IMO, all these devices suck. A fridge or a freezer and a fan blowing air through it would work much better.

      @runeviking5770 5 лет назад +4

      @@patricknintemann924 Not sure about non-electric dehumidifiers, but electric ones work by reheating air and therefore getting rid of humidity - trapping water inside a tank.
      The entire system isn't worth it, and if you're a DIY guy, you can find cheap ACs all over the internet and install them.
      The rule goes: Warm air has a very small amount of water/moisture in it, while colder air has plenty of water/moisture. Imagine your lungs being a paper filter through which air goes. A dry paper filter would work flawlessly, while wet one wouldn't work at all.
      AC is the way to go, or you can use a normal fan and every so often get yourself wet and you'll be cooled down.

    Small ACs won't work cos of law of increasing entropy. To generate cooling, u need to generate a lot more heat energy than u need to for generating direct heat. And this is where u need part like refriedgrrant, coolant , compressor, condenser in addition to blower etc whilst heater simply has heating element and blower.
    Go touch back of fridge.
    This is also why we have heating microwave but it's impossible to have cooling microwave until we figure a way ro enter a parallel universe which has decreasing entropy as law.

      I really don't get why so many RUclipsrs don't credit the music they use. It's frustrating for the viewers to find out and unfair to the creator of whatever music is being licensed.

      I certainly agree. I feel the same. There's music in so many videos on RUclips that's uncredited. Thankfully, Buzzfeed credits the music. I was introduced to Birocratic because of a Buzzfeed video I saw and have been listening to him since.

    I just want someone to invent a walking air conditioner. Kinda like a force field around a person. And you can have it on wherever you go. That would be epic on extremely hot summer days. If they invent that, I would be the first person in line.
