Wow, total flashback. Opening up the Xbox and playing Halo on Christmas morning (a present from my Dad, I was 32 lol). This was where proper gaming started for me 😁. Hope you get it sorted.
XBox player here. We bought each generation of XBox on release. I've modded a few XBoxen, both OG and 360. I have a 1.6 that I need to fix; I managed to FRAG it while doing the LPC rebuild. I plan on installing an HDMI kit. Since the drive works sometimes, this would be a good candidate to softmod. Since you already have the key piece (your copy of Splinter Cell), a softmod would bypass the reliance on the optical drive.
I worked on an OG Xbox before with a similar issue where the tray would not stay shut. For that one, the issue was the laser assembly not raising back up all the way after the tray is retracted. The way these disc trays work, is when it is ejected, the laser assembly drops down just before pushing out the tray. When it retracts, it gets raised again before locking itself into position to read the disc. It's possible the tray might not be seated/locked properly in place, so it won't stay shut. It's been awhile, so I don't remember how I fixed it, but a fresh rubber band for it might help. It could be that the old band is too weak for the final effort to lock the laser in place, which requires more strength than the rest of the process of opening and closing the tray. Sorry if this is a bit long, I'm not good at short-and-sweet.
Usually I hate platinum hits but im not gonna lie seeing a bunch in a stack like that they look really cool. Gray colored boxes like that aren’t a regular thing. Kinda like the red boxes for ps3

The disk drive ejecting like that can often be down to damage from a leaking Clock Capacitor - it begins to corrode the traces along the front edge of the motherboard which carry the signals for the drive eject. It can be repaired by checking continuity of the traces with a multimeter and repairing any broken or intermittent traces with a length of wire. While you're in there rip out that clock capacitor - they're very bad news indeed on v1.0 - 1.5 consoles and WILL damage the board. Any of these consoles where this hasn't already been replaced or removed will be leaking by now to some extent so if anyone reading this has one of these consoles I'd urge you to check this now.

The best bet with these things is to just install homebrew and play games directly from an HDD.
