$260 for an og xbox is just insane and the whole "Its a business they need to make money" thing just doesn't fly when game stores with more expenses sell for less. Just last month I picked up an og xbox for $100 with an oem controller. Not only that but the few times I bought from Dkoldies due to them being the only one with a certain game and happening to not be wildly overpriced on that item the quality has consistently been poor to the point of not even bothering to check if a disc was nearly cracked in half.
$260.00 seems excesive, if they had replaced all the capacitors, and upgraded the hard drive with a newer/ bigger one maybe it would not be so bad, but since it's pretty much a stock console I'd say yes, you paid too much for it.

The worst offender of this is the backwards compatible PS3. The first 4 PS3 models (especially the first 2), are very rare due to being able to play PS2 games. The first 2 models actually have the PS2 CPU and GPU on the motherboard, but the later models have only the GPU. The cheapest one they sell is 500 dollars, and the most expensive one is 800 dollars. Not only do they not replace the thermal paste (despite the BC PS3s having awful overheating issues!), these early models suffer from GPU failure similar to what the Xbox 360 RROD suffered from. A good fix is by swapping the GPU with one from the slim models (60nm or 45nm). This repair costs 600 dollars (only 1 person does this in the US) and will make the console last for possibly a decade with proper care. It’s a better deal to buy a broken backwards compatible console for like 70 dollars and get it repaired, than it is to buy a PS3 from DKoldies.
Idk anything about DKoldies but maybe the peace of mind of knowing you're buying a claimed refurbished console from a company that has return policies, customer service, etc is worth the extra $$$ over buying it from a rando on ebay? but yea idk if DKoldies has those customer service options

Thank you for talking about the clock capacitor! I was not aware of this issue at all! I looked up the manufacturing date and mine was from July 28, 2003 which would be version 1.4. I opened it up and the capacitor was slightly fatter to which i immediately removed it. Thankfully it did not leak. You saved my Xbox dude! Thanks for the heads up!
i did the same my brother bought me a original xbox with 2 controllers 7-8 games for 120 back on christmas of 2020 when i learnt of the capacitor i opened it up and man was it dust so many dust bunnies like literally it was bad so i saw the capacitor and i think i got it just in time because it was bulging a bit a tiny bit of the acid got on but it looked recent cleaned it up well yanked the capacitor out then dusted the heck out of it now it looks like it came out of the assembly line but the thermal paste and stuff im not that worried i wont worry until something does happen these systems have lasted a long time oh yeah mine was i think a 1.2 or 1.3 and i have an extra xbox thats a 1.6
You can tell if the clock capacitor has failed with mine it refuses to power on with the power button and will only work with eject. I need to fix mine i hope it hasn't trashed the board i can't check right now as i have had hand surgery
There's some xbox models that came with bad solder job on the power suply so it stops working but the only way to know for sure is to open it up and check
And a majority of people don’t know the actual numbers behind having 12 employees, rent for your shop & your home, cleaning materials & insurance, still paying taxes and then you can think about profits. If DKOldies went outta business as a result of inappropriately pricing himself no one else could enjoy a knowledgeable, high-volume warehouse of retro video games; and that’s a fact. Sometimes I don’t wanna save $50 if it means the business survives or doesn’t.

I would not have it this way in my ideal form of government. & For the record I’ve never shopped from his store😂 my point is a lot of these people in the comments are probably under 21 and don’t know what it’s like trying to run a retail store in this day and age with a targeted demographic like 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck. It’s hard to live off $10 of profit when taxes, employees, insurance, and supplies. I pay $1,600 a month in rent and I would never look to selling retro titles for a career that keeps a roof over my head in Southern California…
For $260, I'd expect all the capacitors on the motherboard and PSU to be replaced, new thermal paste as well as a new drive belt. Also, I wouldn't call anything you said nitpicky when you paid that much, especially when you consider they probably paid peanuts for this thing. You know they're not buying anything from people for a fair value. I made fun of DKOldies for their ridiculous prices on Facebook a few years ago, and they immediately blocked me. Not only overpriced, but soft as hell!
Now that's a magic eraser cleanup job lol. Not worth $260, got the same thing a few months ago for $25 & it was even modded with a 2tb HDD from a thrift store
Thrift stores are amazing for finding old game stuff, I finally got a second controller for my X360 for five dollars from a local thrift store a couple weeks ago, just needed a good clean thumbsticks were perfect.
@@thisshouldbeentertaining3386 didn't say it wasn't but u have to search. I worked at Walmart and one think I learn bout people is they lazy. If they got to pay more to work less they will do it. If they sold garbage I could see the problem. But they don't. So who cares not like they got a monopoly on retro games. Can go elsewhere if people want
When you said they included an official power supply that's not exactly correct, power supplies built-in all you need is a regular power cable, the little adapter looking thing in your box was intended to be a strain relief to help a problem with early revision power supplies where the solder joints cracked on the AC input potentially causing a fire
I think for a refurbished console, I would expect the thermal paste to have been replaced, but other than that looks a nice console. I bought a refurbished hard modded OG Xbox, which had marks on it with a 500GB hdd, quite a few games installed all for £60, very happy with it.
For $260, I'd expect new paste, new capacitors on the motherboard and PSU as well as a new drive belt, especially when you consider they probably paid pennies on the dollar for this thing. You know they're going around and buying bulk lots for cheap or giving people garbage pay for their trade-ins. Considering the layer of dust he found, it looks like they open the top, blow some canned air in there, seal it up with a warranty sticker and take two minutes on the shell with a magic eraser. Lazy as hell and hardly "Refurbished".
DKscammies, an entire business propped up by roobs that are too scared to buy off ebay or marketplace. Wild how theyre the only business that needs a triple markup to exist. Also lets not mention the predatory "sales" on everything to entice roobs even more to click buy.
Jesus wept, that price is so over the top it is unbelievable. Over here in the UK I see them sell from £30 to £110, which is about $36 to $132. The most expensive ones are refurbed with clock capacitor removed, and original box with manual cables & controller.
I’m going to say they replaced some of the capacitors. I recently did 2 Xboxes and they had bulging silver and black factory capacitors and the ones on your console were green and silver capacitors. Those colors matched up with the same ones I bought for mine. I want to say it was from a company named console 5 or something like that.
I buy from DKOldies, but it’s a shame to see they didn’t change the thermal paste. Fine, charge a high price, but at least back it up with some actual quality refurbishing. Imagine buying a classic car with claims that it’s been restored, but it turns out it just went through the car wash and the air filter is completely clogged.
Of course you can buy from DK Oldies if you want but I don't think you should. Giving them business only encourages the retro gaming price gouging we've been seeing lately.
Great find! I always check out Ebay or Sendico, if I'm looking for Japanese consoles or games. I'll never give DK Oldies my business, they are straight-up price gouging.
I could have sold you one for much cheaper xD Nothing from DKOldies is worth. I like what they have going on there, but the prices I cannot ever justify. They actually make gamestop look better and that's impressive xD
In my opinion, at least DKOldies gives people an option to buy old games for *relatively* lower prices when compared to whatever's going on at Ebay due to how every possible game from there just becomes a "rare" gem and gets it's prices spiked up to heaven and beyond, like when people started selling old Mario games for absurd prices for example.
@@KnucklesWTD I thought a lot of old games over there had their prices absurdly high? I recall seeing a sealed "brand new" copy of Super Mario Bros. being sold as such there.
@@acronym.4328 Yeah they do have that option and I like that about them. They stream and make vids (shorts often). These are all pluses in my book. It's retro city for me and I'm a big fan of retro games. Now they have some decent prices on some stuff, but a vast majority is super high. High enough that it should be mint condition when you get it and it's not. I'm not one that needs my things perfect, long as they aren't scratched bad I'm fine. But those prices are a big yikes on the very overpriced items.
Its crazy how prices are with certain sellers. You can get custom RAM upgraded models cheaper with clock capacitor fixes already applied and much bigger HDD for around the same price maybe a little more but well worth it for an emulator machine
One time I got an original xbox at a yard sale for 30 bucks and it came with 14 games. Selling it for 260+ bucks is absolutely bonkers lol. Dkoldies is insane.
Is it recapped with the caps of death? Reapplied thermal paste? Like if I am paying $260 for that no way in hell, that's a rip off I can buy at Goodwill for $200 less. That's not refurbed.
$260 FOR AN XBOX?!?! I got mine from my local game store, That’s Entertainment, for $49.99. Never been opened, one of the very last Xbox consoles ever made. Absolutely still runs flawless today. I couldn’t imagine spending THAT MUCH for one. Also IIRC, with the last run of Xbox consoles, it’s not about not needing to remove the clock capacitor. Just DONT. I think it just stops working if it is removed on the later ones.
I'm new to the channel and I'm really enjoying the videos. I previously had no clue on what to expect from a refurbished console and your videos are super interesting and informative.
Where I live, at a pawn shop you can find an old Xbox for 50$ or maybe around 75$ with a couple games, of course that comes with 1 controller and power cords.
Again when I clean my consoles for resale I do my best to clean and test them. Will they look like this one ? Not all the time but I am not paying crazy prices they do to resale but if I were to hit them with some armor all the plastics would look mint. Otherwise I never charge that kind of money.
How the hell is that place still open or is it that expensive in the states here in England I have picked up 2 in the last week for £10 each mostly there between £10-20 unless there highly modded with an SSD and a hdmi mod chip in even then there £150-£175
In decent condition but quite expensive for what it is though OG Xbox consoles are getting expensive nowadays - even faulty ones can go for a pretty penny. My one is an boxed early crystal one that I picked up for 30 quid years ago, it started glitching on screen (it is a 1.5 model) so I had it completely refurbed including new capacitors (including clock), cleaned out, new thermal paste, new dvd drive belt and a 2tb hard drive with roms and emulators on so it is a proper nice machine now..
nice one. I got a bog standard model for about 40-50 quid with some extra bits with it. looks just as good as this machine from DKO does. car boots and second hand/charity shops are a lifeline for older games and consoles.
For $260 it better come with a real controller and cables. My local small thrift store has consoles for $25 a pop. Thought about getting them but currently no actual use for them.
$260 is ridiculous, but $25 consoles at a thrift store is a blessing that most people don't have anymore. Best place to look for these older consoles is probably FB marketplace.
@@humanpr0ject1 for $25 it's a gamble. Because I'm sure they don't come with cables or controllers and I'm sure where I'm at they are probably infested with cigarette smoke or roaches lol.
i replace the big caps around the CPU also, i have seen those go bad a lot of times, other than re-paste i also reflow solder joints on the power supply, specially the input side of the board but thats just for my own peace of mind, but imo the thermal paste should have been replaced for sure, its not acceptable to ship it out like that and call it refurbished. 1. clock cap (i replace them with better ones) 2. big caps around CPU 3. power supply reflow 4. new thermal paste 5. dust very thing off, fan included. 6. open up disc drive, check the belts (even if they do work) and grease up the gears and lens rail. This is what i do to refurbish (did about 12 consoles this way)
I paid $85 including shipping for my OG because the disc drive was stuck closed. All it needed was a rubber band cleaning. Came with Halo & Halo 2, Forza Motorsport, 2 controllers, the DVD remote and adapter- was a very late model as well, late 2005, so no longevity issues yet. eBay and small local stores are the only choice if you're someone who cares about retro collecting.
I bought an original xbox from a local retro game shop for $50 less than a month ago and it came with a duke controller and works flawlessly and wasn't cosmetically flawed at all
The last time I bought an OG Xbox was when my OG Xbox broke and I wanted to replace it. It costed me 39.99 Canadian Dollars at a GameStop and it was refurbished with an OEM controller. That was back in 2009/10 and it is still running today
I'm sure other commenters have mentioned this, but given their negative press lately, I wouldn't be surprised if DKOldies cross-references customer names. That is, if you order using the name "Jacob R", they might know who you are. Maybe you've already thought of that. Not saying they'd be shyster's enough to try it, but there's always a possibility they're doing an EXTRA thorough job or sending you OEM controllers if they know you as a popular RUclipsr. Crazy that they don't re-do thermal paste. For $260 you'd expect everything but the kitchen sink thrown at this thing, that's a LUXURY price even with the warranty.
Wish I kept my old consoles if I knew you could get full value back basically I'd have not traded them at a huge loss to gamestop. Crazy ppl are paying 260 for and original xbox I just paid $201 for a brand new series s at target lol.
Wow. I bought a bundle from someone two years ago that had the console, an original "duke" controller, an "s" controller, KOTOR, and Halo. All in very good condition for $50. In the middle of the pandemic.....
The Original Xbox had an internal power supply and just comes with a standard power cable. There is no 'official' Microsoft Xbox power supply. What the hell did they give you?

Yeah I just came to say that is SUPER overpriced!! Seriously you can find one at a retro game store or flea market for cheap and will work just as fine.
You are paying for the condition. Sure, you can buy one cheaper, but it is probably going to have human sweat stains, tobacco, dog hair etc. all over it.
Well yeah if you go that route buy at your own risk, like if the dude selling won't let you check it out or hasn't cleaned it then obviously don't bother
picked up an og xbox from someone on craigslist for $60 with 2 oem remotes, 4 ddr dance pads, & a huge collection of games. condition was flawless too, i opened it myself and only had to replace the rubber band in the disc tray. $260 is definitely overpriced lol
1. Checking if the console keeps time in such a fashion isn't actually testing it. The capacitors for the power supply can provide sufficient power for some time - even without a clock cap. Bare minimum you must unplug it and spam the power button for at least 20 seconds 2. That thin layer of dust is from cleaning the system of dust with compressed air. It removes almost all of it, but leaves that thin layer. I've considered using an ultrasonic cleaner or a bath in deionized water, but nah. You should've gotten a 1.0 to 1.5 to Really see what kind of refurbishing they did - putting extra focus on the clock capacitor area. I do this exact same work and the clock cap area is a night and day difference. I usually remove all large components for full access to all problem areas.
$260?! I got mine 3 years ago from a Goodwill Outlet, for $5. A first launch model from October 2001. The case was unopened, so the first thing I did was dust it out, snip the clock capacitor, test the disc drive (surprisingly functional), and modchip it. Next day I somehow managed to find not just a slightly battered but serviceable AV cable (which not being connected led to the orange ring warning), and just after I ordered a slim controller knockoff, found a Duke controller in near mint condition. Mods and peripherals combined brought that to about $50. Total cost after binge buying every Xbox disc I could find on a buy 2, get 1 free sale when they were already marked down to $2 each, maybe $20?
So I have a broken Halo reach edition controller and I was wondering how can I fix the springs on the controller where the battery goes cuz one of them were bent
I recently got an OG Xbox at Value Village for $20.99. Came with an OG controller with all cables. It’s an old version with that clock issue a lot of Xbox’s have in the long run but after opening it up and noticing it wasn’t leaking I was able to get it out with no issues. My brother also found the last revision of the OG Xbox (the one without the clock issue) out in someone’s yard (they were throwing it away) which fully works and it came with two controllers ( 1 OG, 1 madcatz) U can definitely find Xbox’s out n about and if ur lucky you can find a fully working Xbox for cheap. So $260 is def not worth personally
Recently bought one from my relative for $40 with 2 controllers and a few games, the prices now are insane and more people need to know that these products arent worth the inflated price given the age and maintenance that hasnt been done that will be needed. Im already fearing how the 7th gen consoles will need hard drive replacements which isnt something thats easy to do for your average consumer.
A lot of DK Oldies prices are a bit much for me. I really wanted to order from them, but I'm not sure I want to pick something up that'll I'll have to check and make sure is in working condition. Its sad, really wanted to get a Dreamcast from them.
1.0-1.4 you need to remove the clock cap because it leaks but the system dont need it so can be remove 1.6/1.6b require the clock cap to boot safely without damaging the motherboard. They do still leak as I have found dozens that do leak
I say let the reseller know. I have a og Xbox. first thing I did is pull it apart and remove and add new thermal past. Did everything you checked. I have the DVD remote and sensor. component cable option. never thought I could get 260.00 for it. On top of it, mine is super clean. I feel that price was a bit high. I hope you could get some back.
Question on what you would price an OG Xbox: Not refurbished but cleaned. Reads discs but disc drive slips sometimes and needs a slap and Aftermarket Controller, No exploded Capacitors inside. Tops not scraped up.
1.6 gold caps don't leak, they don't bulge either, they just fail. I've had to replace at least 10x 1.6 gold caps now because as many know, the 1.6 doesn't function without, unlike all other revisions functioning fine without it. Long term myth that the 1.6 doesn't fail, it was sadly just a matter of time.
I've believed the v1.6 doesn't self-destruct like the others do without modification...not necessarily that they don't fail. However, I have seen an issue with the v1.6 and the 5 larger caps near the power connector and CPU bulging that I have yet to see on any other revision.
I genuinely don't understand how DKOldies is still in business. Their prices are beyond ridiculous. People are complaining about PS5 prices while DKOldies is out here selling Wii's for $350.
I purchased an OG xbox 2 days ago from a local game store for 70$ and the guy litterally took it apart and showed me that he had replaced the thermal pace, put in a brand new disc drive etc.
That's actually not true at all, the Series X can only play about a quarter of the 360 library and a mere 63 of the 993 original Xbox games. The backwards compatibility initiative is great but they're nowhere near full compatibility.
So basically as long as you buy the 'good' condition ones, they actually clean them at least. Which I guess is a massive improvement over what most folks are getting.
Wiped down, Can of air cleaned and a new drive belt and by new i mean re-positioned so the flat spot is moved so the drive door will open sometimes = "Refurbished" /send it

That weird textured part in top is from them ususing a magic eraser on the top to clean adhesive off. I tell them all the tome it ruins surfaces. They are a micro sanding pad not a cleaning sponge.
I paid $90CAD for an Xbox OG from my local game store. Came with a controller that was old but OEM, along with OEM cables. The console was in pretty good condition however the game store only tests, they don't refurbish, but I was happy
Oh okay, that makes sense. Also, thank you for the tear down portion of the video. I don't know jack about tearing apart consoles but mine clearly isn't the 1.6 because it won't store the time.
This was a later model power cable with built in protection because there was an engineering fault in the power supplies where the solder would crack for the power cable connector on the power supplyi and it'd cause a short or fire.
I actually found one at Salvation Army 3 weeks ago, no cords but one controller. 14.99……. Gave it a clean and board inspection…. Works perfect…. Would i ever pay over 50-60 , nope……

I literally just picked up a Playstation Vita model one in a couple of games at my comic book shop for under a hundred bucks. It literally looks like new, I wonder how much is DK oldies PS vita cost? If anyone knows, let me know.
The power supply was built into those systems. I only ever got just simple power cords with mine as far as I remember. Maybe I just got used systems and never had the original 'power supply' myself but that thing doesn't look familiar to me.

Exactly, some consoles are so overpriced despite how plentiful they are. The only time that overpricing is acceptable imo is if they are rare

Thanks for the heads up!
i did the same my brother bought me a original xbox with 2 controllers 7-8 games for 120 back on christmas of 2020 when i learnt of the capacitor i opened it up and man was it dust so many dust bunnies like literally it was bad so i saw the capacitor and i think i got it just in time because it was bulging a bit a tiny bit of the acid got on but it looked recent cleaned it up well yanked the capacitor out then dusted the heck out of it now it looks like it came out of the assembly line but the thermal paste and stuff im not that worried i wont worry until something does happen these systems have lasted a long time oh yeah mine was i think a 1.2 or 1.3 and i have an extra xbox thats a 1.6
Give a look at the mattkc video later there's actually more leaky capacitors beyond the clock one
I feel like everyone knows about this
You can tell if the clock capacitor has failed with mine it refuses to power on with the power button and will only work with eject. I need to fix mine i hope it hasn't trashed the board i can't check right now as i have had hand surgery
There's some xbox models that came with bad solder job on the power suply so it stops working but the only way to know for sure is to open it up and check
DKoldies is absolutely ridiculous with their prices
And a majority of people don’t know the actual numbers behind having 12 employees, rent for your shop & your home, cleaning materials & insurance, still paying taxes and then you can think about profits.
If DKOldies went outta business as a result of inappropriately pricing himself no one else could enjoy a knowledgeable, high-volume warehouse of retro video games; and that’s a fact. Sometimes I don’t wanna save $50 if it means the business survives or doesn’t.

For $260, I'd expect all the capacitors on the motherboard and PSU to be replaced, new thermal paste as well as a new drive belt. Also, I wouldn't call anything you said nitpicky when you paid that much, especially when you consider they probably paid peanuts for this thing.
DKOldies straight up price gouging.
The worst about them is they low ball people to horde consoles and games to resale at 300% markup.
Nice video. DKoldies always rubbed me the wrong way. He's like your local used electronics peddler but on an industrial scale.

I just bought two from a thrift store for $10.00 apiece. They are super easy to clean and replace those caps on your own too.
I just bought a gbp ice blue, from EBAY. Its new. Seller packed it super well. No scratches, no refurbing. I am ecstatic

Nothing from DKOldies is worth.
@@acronym.4328 Ebay has better prices than them generally. They overcharge on games too
@@KnucklesWTD I thought a lot of old games over there had their prices absurdly high? I recall seeing a sealed "brand new" copy of Super Mario Bros. being sold as such there.
@@acronym.4328 Yeah they do have that option and I like that about them. They stream and make vids (shorts often). These are all pluses in my book. It's retro city for me and I'm a big fan of retro games. Now they have some decent prices on some stuff, but a vast majority is super high. High enough that it should be mint condition when you get it and it's not. I'm not one that needs my things perfect, long as they aren't scratched bad I'm fine. But those prices are a big yikes on the very overpriced items.
@@acronym.4328 they copy those prices and raise them usually. They want 280 dollars for Pokémon emerald for example.
It’s crazy cause as a reseller, I don’t pick up OG XBOX even for $10 because it’s not worth it. How they charge that much is insane
You happened to be one of the few to own the elusive v1.5 model? I envy you.
They use magic erasers to clean, which is a very very fine grit of sandpaper almost. So that usually leaves those matte cleaning marks on the systems
Literally bought one yesterday for like $50 and it was soft modded. Honestly RIP for that price.
For $260 it better come with a real controller and cables. My local small thrift store has consoles for $25 a pop. Thought about getting them but currently no actual use for them.
$260 is ridiculous, but $25 consoles at a thrift store is a blessing that most people don't have anymore. Best place to look for these older consoles is probably FB marketplace.

i replace the big caps around the CPU also, i have seen those go bad a lot of times, other than re-paste i also reflow solder joints on the power supply, specially the input side of the board but thats just for my own peace of mind, but imo the thermal paste should have been replaced for sure, its not acceptable to ship it out like that and call it refurbished.
1. clock cap (i replace them with better ones)
2. big caps around CPU
3. power supply reflow
4. new thermal paste
5. dust very thing off, fan included.
6. open up disc drive, check the belts (even if they do work) and grease up the gears and lens rail.
This is what i do to refurbish (did about 12 consoles this way)
I feel like they knew you from the 360 video and made sure this one went a little smoother.
I really wanted get a old psp bundle from them but now after some of your dkoldies reviews I think I'm good
I bought an original xbox from a local retro game shop for $50 less than a month ago and it came with a duke controller and works flawlessly and wasn't cosmetically flawed at all
Since your order is picked to be filmed; I’m throwing in a warranty card 6 months.

I'm surprised that you got an original Xbox controller and not a 3rd party controller.
1. Checking if the console keeps time in such a fashion isn't actually testing it. The capacitors for the power supply can provide sufficient power for some time - even without a clock cap. Bare minimum you must unplug it and spam the power button for at least 20 seconds

What does OEM mean?
I purchased an OG xbox 2 days ago from a local game store for 70$ and the guy litterally took it apart and showed me that he had replaced the thermal pace, put in a brand new disc drive etc.
Considering the latest Xbox supports all Xbox games, The only value you get is nostalgia, which is up to the buyer to decide if 260 is worth it
That's actually not true at all, the Series X can only play about a quarter of the 360 library and a mere 63 of the 993 original Xbox games. The backwards compatibility initiative is great but they're nowhere near full compatibility.
So basically as long as you buy the 'good' condition ones, they actually clean them at least. Which I guess is a massive improvement over what most folks are getting.
