I then started noticing the videos popping up on how terrible the condition of his product was. I was also looking at buying a N64 and after countless videos, as well as seeing how Dk handled the back lash.....I thank everyone who made a video. I will not be buying from them
If I had to guess, it was left in someones garage/shed, that was either not completely covered or had leaks. Rain and debris then got into the console. They probably had a big clean up and their grown up kids, or someone they know was like, "hey, on TikTok they got these guys who give you a good price on old consoles, send it to them."
I paid the same price you did for a refurbished GameCube with all the power cords and an original controller. On top of that they gave me a discount for a 1019 Block memory card (50% off). The system worked fine, and the fans look near sparkly clean. With companies like these, it really illustrates just how scummy big names online resellers who provide “warranties” are. A local shop just gave me a minimum 3x more clean console then a big named brand would’ve. Not only that, but it costed me not even close to what these companies are currently running prices for “refurbished” consoles that can have stuff like this happen. Support your local shops, cause man do they do a way better job at actually following through promises then places like DKOldies.
Fuck dk oldies! Drive to a pawn shop even if it isnt in your area. Trust me its a way better feeling when you physically find a gem that actually means something to you
While I haven't bought any consoles from DKOldies, I've purchased many console game cartridges (Atari 2600, NES). The vast majority of the games worked on first try but every now and then a game will not work. I always clean the contacts with alcohol before I even put the game in the consoles. For the games that do not work, they did offer store credit, which I am okay with. Some of the games that I cleaned didn't work and needed a second or third deep cleaning, then the game worked. That causes me to think that maybe they do no test or clean every game.
Don’t be surprised about the blowing into the cartridge thing, they don’t seem to know anything about anything, they literally showed themselves using a magic eraser on the some sticker residue on a Wii and they freaking had the audacity to say it won’t scratch, that’s not true, it’s abrasive, it scratches it to hell and back
Brought an Sega Genesis from a comic book store (red flag). If the buyer just happened to be a comic book store, then get ready for a project), and when I plugged it in, there was no power. Soldered the power jack after testing the needed a new power cable theory ( it didn't work), and it turns on. Then, I got a game. There is no signal. So, I cleaned the cartridge slot and was able to start playing the Genesis. And you know what I paid for it? 75 bucks. Not including the tools I used to fix the thing
First time you turned on the condole, there was a small white electrical charge that indicates there may have been a grounding issue or your hand touching the metal plate when turning on
I couldn't in good conscience sell a console that I knew wasn't gonna work. I have sold a few here and there on marketplace and I try to make everything look and feel as new as possible
Now they will send the console back to you and refuse the refund because technically you’ll be returning a working console to them. They won’t care that YOU fixed it and that it was DOA when you received it. Their company and its actions are cringy at best. I know I’ll never order anything from them or recommend them to anyone. Id rather go to GameStop at this point. Great video all the same! Keep us updated as to whether they actually refund you, if you send it back. I know I would. Who knows how long it will stay functional.

This video is interesting. So far what we know about DK Oldies is that a) it seems like they charge over market price for retro consoles b) they claim to be refurbishing and testing them when they aren't really and c) their tips for getting your system working is the usually generic IT "have you tried turning it off and on" nonsense. This, coupled with all their cutsey attempts at viral marketing lead me to believe that they've primarily been selling to ordinary people, wine moms buying stuff for their kids and just regular gamers that want to play old games on the original hardware again. You watch Joey pick out bootleg cartridges and if you don't know any better, you think, oh these guys know their stuff, their prices are worth it. Their target market was not necessarily retro collectors, resellers or anyone with even a modicum of tech knowledge or the market, otherwise they had to know they'd be exposed by these types eventually. Seeing as how it has only really been in the past few weeks that they've had all this negative exposure as RUclipsrs have been doing videos on them, I have to wonder, how many ordinary people have been ripped off by them?
Great vid. Just a concern... Maybe I missed something, but how do we know for sure it's their unit and not your own?? (to be clear I'm not a DK simp, I've seen a few videos where there is at least a comparison) just want to make sure this is as genuine as possible.
What you went through with the return is standard corporate response to a return/refund. Corporations are in the business to make money. 1) So first, have the customer trouble shoot known issues (not every is tech savvy.) 2) Offer a replacement. Typically, you are selling things at a profit, so if they can get away with replacing or repairing the product, it saves them money over issuing a refund. 3) Most places require you to return the merchandise before sending a refund. This is the worste case scenario. Because not only have they not gotten paid for the item. Also, if they refund before receiving the item, they might never recieve the item. So they would be out the cost of the item, and without the capital to get a replacement a double loss.
1. I like your videos. 2. Cleaning is not refurbishing it. 3. You didn't clean everything or even take the board out so it's not completely clean. 4. A full refurbishment would be first part fully clean the console board and shell and any additional parts. Second part would be to do a full recap of the console putting everything back together and testing to make sure you indeed do everything correctly. I've been dealing with n64s for a long time now. I've bought them buy the dozens they can be fenkell. You really have to be thorough!
His job was terrible. But at least he isn't charging for it, right? haha. He could have skipped everything and just removed the oxidation from the cart pins.... 99.9% that was the issue.
I kinda feel bad for the support person. As somebody who works tech support I see instances like this a good bit. Most times the people who work in the support team have little to no influence on the actual process of anything that happens in the business. Support teams, especially for BS companies like this are the ones who get a majority of the backlash from angry consumers and have to perform damage control for things they legitimately have zero control over. He's most likely sending what copy and paste the higherups tell him to and will have to go through numerous amounts of hoops even if they genuinely want to help someone and get them their money back. Regardless, glad you got your money back and seriously hope DKOldies takes some accountability for lying to their customers and gives people what they are paying for.
"There's a sucker born every minute" P. T. Barnum Anyone would be better off buying these old systems and games on eBay. I think a lot of people don’t realize eBay is not like it was back in the day. It’s basically impossible to be ripped off these days as eBay will make a seller take an item back in I’d say 99% of cases outside the buyer being an obvious scammer.
Also, even if the seller is 100% in the right, eBay will often cover top rated plus sellers anyways. Had a guy return the wrong order and I got back a pack of stickers instead of my copy of Donkey Kong for Atari 2600. lol. eBay refunded him but I was able to keep the $8 I made on it. lol. I've also been able to have eBay remove a negative feedback for a customer who claimed USPS "lost" the item, when it was marked as delivered. Turns out a few days later it showed up at the guy's doorstep after I refunded him anyways. lol. So even if a buyer is a jerk and 100% wrong, eBay still takes care of them *and* the seller.
I had a similar problem when I brought an Sega Genesis. After soldering thr power jack, I got WrestleMania the arcade game and of course, it wasn't receiving any signal. What I did was take a couple q tips, rubbing alcohol, sandpaper and canned air. Few minutes and few q tips, I was playing WrestleMania like it was brand spanking new out of the box
The crazy part is that people can go to eBay and get a console only for $50 if not, less… and do the exact steps DKOldies told you and have a working console… amazing that they charge $90-$110 for this
@@ReviewArchiveUSA420 You got a really good deal then. Oem controllers by themselves currently go for 25-40 a piece depending on if the stick was replaced. Replacement oem cables are 12-15. guess i'm just lucky bought a 64 from them recently and no issues. the customer support seemed pretty standard. i ordered some items from a large nationwide chain they arrived broken and was giving the same replacement first then refund time table.
In defense of DK Oldies, the "jumped through a lot of hoops" during communication is a bit of a leap. They offered a simple tip list, followed by an offer to replace, followed by an offer to refund. It sounds pretty reasonable. Plenty of companies these days stop during the replacement offer and just harp on that over and over until you finally get them to refund. This seemed pretty straight forward. I usually just state what happened, what I tried, and what I expect as an outcome in the initial email and that will sometimes help skip the middle process.
I concur with this as well, they’re doing what they were being told in how to handle complaints like this. At the end of the day, DKoldies has to do their due diligence and clean these consoles inside.
I bought a PS1 from them a while back...it does work, but unfortunately has a "stuttering" read speed. I heard earlier models could suffer with this due to plastic in the disc drive rubbing. I was a bit sad and haven't fixed it up yet.
bruh the moment of truth here was incredible - excellent video, completely exposes dkoldies, cant believe they asked YOU to do the job you paid them for smh
There have never been issues with blowing cartridges it’s the best way to clear dust and dirt out of them to get them started same with ds cartridges and switch ones we all blow them if they don’t work when inserted
if they're selling these Consoles as Refurbished then you should be able to Plug it in and use it. You fixed it with just some Alcohol and a couple of Brushes? pretty impressive.
Test the system again a few more times to see if that was really it. You don’t want to say. Nevermind to them and then the console stops working for another reason.
my n64 did not have a jumper pack. got it from a pawn shop and it worked normally. (when i say no jumper pack i mean the expansion bay was empty no extra 4mb module *red top* no black cartridge.
I also buy and sell a lot of electronics like game consoles and computers, never have i ever delivered a console or computer that was filthy or didn't work! I refurbish everything that comes in, dirty or clean, no mather what, it gets opened up, fresh thermal paste/thermal pads (that is the grease you found inside this N64, it came from the thermal pads) and a full deep clean, i have nothing but satisfied customers and they recommend my services to others, and i am just a lonely dude doing this work all by myself! DKOldies has a lot of staff, so cleaning should be a no brainer for them, but yet, all they care about is the money!
I agree with what other RUclipsrs are saying: If they just priced the consoles at a high price and people bought them, then it’s whatever. But no. They say their consoles are refurbished when it’s not. Thats the major problem here. If you, one person can clean the console out like that and have it working, an entire team should be able to clean it and get it working too. DKOidles is literally are Mr. Krabs in real life. Edit: Also just send the actual controllers for the console as well. Don’t need to be spending 400 dollars on a N64 and get some cheap knockoff brand that feels terrible to hold.
I have a nintendo NES that my moms ex husband bought new in the late 80s. I remember blowing into the carts way back then and the games still work 37 years later.
The fact that they tried to pawn off the blame onto the consumer is telling enough. The first email from customer support is "well maybe it's your fault" as if MULTIPLE people haven't made content exposing them for not even bothering to open "refurbished" consoles. It's slimy practices like this that are actively damaging the retro game community, not only are they selling bum consoles but they are also driving up the market with their low-quality high priced product.
I found my old N64 cleaned it up or so I thought and my games, some games played well and some were flickering on the screen, would a dirty console cause this?
so the first video showed the AV cables as Yellow(Left) and Red(Right)Being used. It did work on the working system. However, the DKO model did not work with that method. Then on the second video you cleaned it (YAY FINALLY) and then used AV cable as Yellow(Left) and (Right). so yellow is for composite video, red for the right audio channel, and white for the left channel stereo audio(usually). However, some systems can be tempermental and donot work with a seperate combination. So that could have been the issue originally. However the more likley cuase was that the debris on the pins inside caused the system to not work or miss read. Also its common practice for a business to replace a item and get a return than it is to refund. So thats pretty normal.
You should not have cleaned anything for them, now when you send it back they are gonna make a video saying we sent out a refurbished console to a customer and when we got it back it was working and look at the inside. Taking credit for what you did, you should really keep it now just complain to the customer service that you needed to take everything apart and refurbish it yourself and they should give you a credit or something

What's your EBay seller's name?
You still sell games or consoles ?
Me too. I take pride in every game and console I sell. I want customers to get their purchases in the same condition that I would expect to get something I spent my hard earned money on. Otherwise, I may as well just have garage sales.
I work hard to keep my 100% positive feedback. Honesty and transparency every step of the way.
Restaurants have Yelp. Uber and Lyft drivers have feedback. Everyone has some kind of rating system.
There is literally no real way to hold DK Oldies accountable for bad customer service.
@@GiuseppeGaetanoSabatelli You own a restaurant? My brother in law owns one too, he tells me I can get free food anytime, but I choose to pay for it because it's his business and I want to support him as a customer as well, even though he's married to my sister.

That would be amazing. Just affix the note in a corner where it's out of the way. Make there be a chance the next owner will find out they have the N64 from this very video.
It wasn't refurbished by Jacob R... it was refurbished by Kreesky

@@Digitaldelboy Doesn't deny the fact that DKoldies don't clean and recap their stuff and sell them as refurbished.

No TV takes 5 minutes to recognize a signal. These dudes are just talking out of their asses now. LOL!
Please return it. Make them be accountable and now you know when they sell it whoever gets it will get a clean console.
Don’t be surprised about the blowing into the cartridge thing, they don’t seem to know anything about anything, they literally showed themselves using a magic eraser on the some sticker residue on a Wii and they freaking had the audacity to say it won’t scratch, that’s not true, it’s abrasive, it scratches it to hell and back
You are way too humble my guy. I would be furious if I paid 200 bucks and it came dead on arrival.

How come you didn't hook up the AV cables in the last video properly? White - White, Yellow - Yellow.
1) So first, have the customer trouble shoot known issues (not every is tech savvy.)
2) Offer a replacement.
Hey @kreesky what is the mat that you have under the console called? wanna grab one for myself when i begin to do some refurbishing myself! Thanks
“VOTCT large silicone mat” on amazon. Around $25 only.
Wait they told you blow into the cartridge WTF blowing allows moisture and shit to get all over the connections of the cartridge

Anyone would be better off buying these old systems and games on eBay.
Turns out a few days later it showed up at the guy's doorstep after I refunded him anyways. lol. So even if a buyer is a jerk and 100% wrong, eBay still takes care of them *and* the seller.
there is a small 3 pin transistor package on the back of the board near the power and av out circuitry that can go out.
That's crazy. That's absolutely insane. Why is DKOldies digging themselves deeper in this hole???
I had a similar problem when I brought an Sega Genesis. After soldering thr power jack, I got WrestleMania the arcade game and of course, it wasn't receiving any signal. What I did was take a couple q tips, rubbing alcohol, sandpaper and canned air. Few minutes and few q tips, I was playing WrestleMania like it was brand spanking new out of the box
The crazy part is that people can go to eBay and get a console only for $50 if not, less… and do the exact steps DKOldies told you and have a working console… amazing that they charge $90-$110 for this
I bought a N64 from Ebay with 3 OEM controllers, all the oem cables and 4 common games for around $120 and it worked perfectly fine.
@@ReviewArchiveUSA420 You got a really good deal then. Oem controllers by themselves currently go for 25-40 a piece depending on if the stick was replaced. Replacement oem cables are 12-15. Console itself is 60-80. If I was selling that lot as a reseller who actually put in time and effort to ensure it's completely refurbished and working, it would be somewhere in the 150s to 180s depending on the games and how much work it took to clean.

You need to pull the pin connector out and clean the board under it.That’s the main issue games don’t start up.Dirt and dust builds underneath it and the pin connector doesn’t make a good connection with the board.

It amuses me you did a better job refurbishing the console than they did
guess i'm just lucky bought a 64 from them recently and no issues. the customer support seemed pretty standard. i ordered some items from a large nationwide chain they arrived broken and was giving the same replacement first then refund time table.
Buy. A ps2 fat or slim and it's way better than the ps1. It's also more quality on ps2. Ps1 laser and the disc holder are the most problematic.

There have never been issues with blowing cartridges it’s the best way to clear dust and dirt out of them to get them started same with ds cartridges and switch ones we all blow them if they don’t work when inserted

@Super Nostalgia dawg what
I agree with what other RUclipsrs are saying: If they just priced the consoles at a high price and people bought them, then it’s whatever.
I remember blowing into the carts way back then and the games still work 37 years later.
what type of alcohol do you use to clean the inside of the system.
Watching you not wearing gloves is making me anxious with a console that dirty
The fact that they tried to pawn off the blame onto the consumer is telling enough. The first email from customer support is "well maybe it's your fault" as if MULTIPLE people haven't made content exposing them for not even bothering to open "refurbished" consoles. It's slimy practices like this that are actively damaging the retro game community, not only are they selling bum consoles but they are also driving up the market with their low-quality high priced product.
I found my old N64 cleaned it up or so I thought and my games, some games played well and some were flickering on the screen, would a dirty console cause this?
You got the reverse refurbished special , comes with all the dust and junk from the 90s.
so the first video showed the AV cables as Yellow(Left) and Red(Right)Being used.
