I agree, I bought my 2011 and purchased the extended warranty, and as soon as that expired, I started having problems. It’s not just the quality of the car that’s living off the past, but it’s also the customer service. I had a recall issue so I took my vehicle in to fix it. Mercedes refused saying that the recall was finished and my 2011 was didn’t qualify because the recall only went up to 2010...supposedly, the issue that I had didn’t exist anymore🤪🤪🤪
Sometimes those brands are built on reliability that's solid (Toyota, Honda, etc) and sometimes not so much (almost everything else - Tesla, BMW, GM, etc)
BMWs are overbuilt for a reason, to keep you coming back to the dealer for service and repairs. Some cars and trucks cost so much money in repair and replacement costs, you wind up paying twice for them.
Why is BMW still in business? Who keeps buying those expensive lemons? The wealthy secret lizard people? If I were in the market for a high-end luxury vehicle, I'd look at Lexus and Acura. I wouldn't even consider anything else.
I have family in Austria, and several years ago they had the thing for BMW, my uncle had one, my aunt had one, and my cousin had one. Let's just say you won't find a BMW in their driveway any more lol, heck if you mention BMW, my uncle's blood pressure starts going up 😂
I owned 2, and now i own toyota. I have to say, that are much better cars that scotty is trying to portray. Extremely fun to drive, lightest in the class, rwd, perfect car enthusiast guy car. Not the best car if you need something from a to b.
25 years ago I worked in the Parts Department at a dealer that sold Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Land Rover. After seeing the prices for their parts, I knew I'd never own one myself unless I was very wealthy. 25 years later, I'm still broke, but I own a Honda so I can at least afford to fix most things on it when it breaks, which doesn't happen often.

I recently drove a new BMW for a week in Hawaii. It reminded me of my ex-wife. On the outside, it was good looking, it handled well, but the more I was inside of it the more I disliked it. It would nag at me about lane departure without even leaving a lane. Sometimes it would shut off at a light and sometimes it would stay on. When it did turn itself on it was so jerky and rough it was annoying. Granted, it was new but it was a rental, so I might have been the 40th guy to test it out. Kind of like my ex.

Scotty love your mind, your attitude and experience. I did I.T. for 30 years and I was just as critical with the technology. You're doing a great job my friend.
Technology is about sales and marketing, differentiating from other brands and maximizing sales volume. The repairs are taken care of under the OEM warranty. Get outside the warranty, then you're in trouble. This is the current business philosophy and other industries do the same.
Hell, you can still be under warranty and dealers will do everything not to do the repair. Happened to me with Jeep. Took 5 months and being pissed off at the service department to make them repair it.
hi Scotty .Just bought a 2013 Lexus ES350 56 K miles and everything works as when it was new. It was the cheapest used Lexus car in the Lexus dealership and they treated me like I was but their top end car. To top it off ,the dealership has a no haggle price (cheapest I could find) and there is no dealers fees at all. just car price and sales tax. No pressure to buy anything. I was out in 1 1/2 hours driving away.

Can confirm. My grandfather has a 1994 316i e36 sedan, he's paid the car's value multiple times to the mechanic, it was in bad shape when he bought it, and it hasn't gotten much better.
I have owned 4 preowned BMWs. Never had a big issue except an unscheduled repair on a 1989 325ix. The all wheel drive system broke and the dealer helped pay part of the $1200 repair. You can really appreciate these cars after you spend a couple of weeks in any rental car. There is active safety and passive safety. BMW has both cornered. I can have a track experience on low traffic roads and get 37 mpg at the end of the day. I will keep buying them thank you.
Yep, I'd never consider any tesla because of that giant iPad thingy which you have to look at and mess around with to do anything. There are other reasons like the unnecessarily recessed door handles which _will_ break eventually and cost a bunch to fix.
True, their maintenance is quite expensive. $832 per year with their reliability being the worse. An example would be like you say, bad quality control, things will fall off, be imperfection. Plus when you get into an accident, it will cost a whole lot of money to repair for just a vehicle that has a lot of technology.
I agree with Scotty but I think these cars can be a lot of fun and not as headache inducing as long as it's not your daily driver. If you have a lexus for your daily or just something reliable in general, why not buy a cheap small bmw that you don't care if it breaks down and just drive it sometimes or an older Mercedes convertible for the summer? In my opinion, these brands make every newer model less and less reliable because they've already built the name for themselves so they'll get clients regardless & the more it breaks = the more money they make.
as a bmw enthusiast and owner i can assure you the best beemers were built between 1980 and 1995. i own 4 old bmws and never had any problems with them. if your bmw is bult before 1995 = ultimate driving machine. above 1995 = money pit
@@harveyhankerson8359 why did the transmission beak? bad maintenence? the ZF 5HP18 should be bulletproof as long as you take good care of it. i`m pretty sure it could have been easily fixed. one of my bmws is an e34 520i and it has 410.000 km (i don`t know how many miles that is). i had to replace the torque converter + ATF and filter. it was a 600 euro bill tbh but was worth it because the car now pulls strong and the fuel consumption is back to normal
as a learning mechanic i learned that most codes are irrelevant, so even if i dont understand why a new car like the mercedes has that many, they shouldnt be a problem
Scotty, check this out, I bought a 2000 E39 520i BMW here in Ireland, for 1,600eur, kept it outside the house for a year, put it in for the national car test yesterday, and it passed straight off. All I did to it was stick the rear view mirror back up, tighten the handbrake, and buff the foggy headlight covers. It passed the emissions test with flying colours. The only advisory was the tyres were over 6 years old (still have tons of thread left on them) Oh, I also fixed those little plastic adjusters in the headlights (all four of them, and then aligned the lights). There is always some plastic issue with them, you're not wrong
The 14yo Beamer was unsurprising, the Tesla was somewhat surprising (particularly how the a/c wasn't working)... but the brand new *$150k+* Mercedes, with that many problems - built in *Alabama????* 🤣 Engineered like no other car is right! Mercedes, you are a JOKE!!
Happy Easter Scotty!! Love your channel so please keep up the good work. I would never purchase a Mercedes, BMW, or Tesla. I have a 2007 Dodge Charger SXT with the 3.5L V6 and I have 340,000 miles on it and it is still running strong while giving me 20 miles per gallon. I'd rather stick with simple cars than luxury cars...luxury cars will make you poor once they start breaking down.
@@MartinJones123 I agree. One of my old buddies had a 2006 Dodge Magnum and it gave him problems all the time since he first bought it. My Charger however, has never given me one problem ever in 340,000 miles. My auto mechanics have never seen a Dodge Charger with so many miles and running as quiet as it does. My dad was a mechanic and always told me to take care of my car, so that is what I do. I treat my Charger as if it was my kid.
@@NocThunder I’ve owned quite a few Chrysler products over the past 50 yrs. It’s ALL about how you take care of them. Same with most vehicles. IF you don’t service them then how can you expect them to last.
Damn, i own the same car with same color 10 years ago. Scotty is right, that stupid flaw design on using plastic part really gives owner hard time. I spend almost 1k just to replace those stupid gasket, painful memories.
My 01 vw golf was made of plastic too. The Germans stuffed their cars with plastic. And then the wiring was placed on top of the engine so it would all overheat and ruin the electrical harness.
One reason why I hate driving behind a Tesla I can never tell when they're braking. There's a reason why cops give tickets for taillights being out, they're road hazards if no one can tell when you're braking. They're likely to be rear ended.
The Tesla sounds just like an electric forklift.🤣It is soulless. I don't care how good they run.. they are still an appliance shaped like a egg with wheels on them.
@@springer-qb4dv I looked at a video yesterday of a nice looking Tesla that needed a new battery pack and it was going to cost $22,000.. the owner bought a bunch of dynamite took it out in an isolated area that looks something like Montana and blew it up.🤣 The video is on RUclips just look it up.. When the battery goes out on those regardless of age and it is not covered under warranty it is pure garbage and disposable.. like throwing the batteries away and a flashlight.🤣
I remember when I was 19 years old trying to read MapQuest directions off of a 2-in phone screen I rear-ended a brand new BMW driven by none other but an attorney at law who handed me his fancy business card. It was then that I knew I was screwed. Apparently it costed him $8,000 to repair the little smudge on his bumper because not only was he an attorney so he nailed me but apparently he had a crazy custom paint job as well.
@Turk Scientific I’m here with my 2010 Toyota Camry LE, and happy to have it. All my Rich girlfriends show off their expensive BMWs that their Rich husbands bought for them. Had a cousin with a BMW 3 series. It looked nice, but it crapped out within 2 years and sat in his parents driveway for ten! Think he drives a Honda now, and so do my aunt and uncle! Their cars still run and they've never had to service them for any problems!

That design with the display in the middle of the dashboard of the Tesla is genuinely bad design. It's actually flat out stupid. That would drive me insane while driving.
Latest on TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID (5th Generation) AWD Just spoke to my brother who lives in Europe and is an automotive enthusiast, he said a Memo was just released regarding serious issue in RAV4 HYBRID... AWD only... So it turns out that the cable running to the motor that powers rear axle is corroding and needs replacing, it's a roughly $3,000 repair. Models effected 2019 - 2021 build in CANADA. Memo also mentions USA but I didn't know they made RAV4 in USA.
I am a halfway decent mechanic I do not view my skill anywhere near as high as Scotty's but I've been doing this a fair amount of my life and I 100% agree with Scotty on the plastics thing I utterly refuse to work on BMWs or any German cars for that matter I don't lose any money because I don't work on them cuz I've got plenty of work with all the other car brands... But German cars are just such a f****** headache they're really not worth it... And as a matter of fact everybody that brings a German car by my shop I tell them I don't work on German cars and I recommend that they just sell it and get something reliable like a lexis
Most of these cars are just overengineerd. The example of the unsolved recall action on the Mercedes shows that they can even be a problem for the brand dealers. I wouldn't advise anyone to do any repairs to them in a general garage, apart from the standard service to the car. The cars are overengineerd because they want as many USP as possible to justify their huge price tags.
My cousin had a 8 yo 1 and the engine had a blown headgasket, get the head iff and the cylinder liner was damaged, friggin pos bmw, mercedes, audi are.
A lot of rich ppl just dun care... They buy a new car every 3 or 4 years. What you said is not a problem for them. By the time the problems happen, they already sold their car. I think luxury cars should continue to have the fancy technology and affordable cars should be easy to maintanance with good durability.
I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe, which is really a Tercel, with no issues, leaks, etc. I had a 10 year old Volvo. Smooth drive, nice smooth engine, but requiring high octane fuel, and with an oil drip. $900 to replace the dripping gasket, which again leaked 3 months later.
Scotty - See , I'm sweating like a pig , actually pigs don't sweat. 🐖😲😲😲 Speaking of failing hood struts, last winter I was working under the hood of my 00' Crown Vic LX & thank the Lord I dress in layers to stay warm. I had 2 tee shirts, 2 sweatshirts, a lite jacket, a heavy jacket & coveralls on & that, I believe, saved me from possible injury. And the fact that I was far enough into the engine bay when the left strut failed & the hood came down directly across my shoulders. No warning , no noise , no nothing 'cept a whole of pain & you don't know how much one of those gynormous hoods weighs until 1 falls on you. Got the 💩💩 scared out of me too.
My older brother is a certified Audi mechanic in Europe. The things he told me, how they don't even bother fixing anything, but just replacing them...and the technicians don't even have the authority or means to fix certain areas, they just throw new parts at it and drain the customer's wallet.
Common theme: focus on technology means expensive cars and expensive repairs. 1. BMW - too much plastic 2. Tesla - rough ride for luxury car, display location is wrong and you must look away from the road 3. Mercedes - too complex, and repair or even maintenance like tires is outrageously expensive
Rode in my buddys Tesla for a 3 hour trip and the seats and shocks were absolutely horrible! Not a comfortable ride at all, but hey at least he’s getting laid 😂😂😂😂
OMG! Scotty, I REALLY would like to see you interview that Alabama plant manager. What a hilarious exchange THAT would be! I laughed so hard through this. Thank you
I’ve gotten lucky _(so far)_ with my 2011 335i, only things that have failed on me are the starter and charge pipe- both together under $1000 total parts/labor. I also had the radiator fail, and that alone approached $1000 to fix. Glad I have a local mechanic not afraid to wrangle with this thing
Bmws are broke man walking Same with mercedes. Those junkers cant handle rural driving either. They overheat real easily, warp heads and damage the cylinder bores
Got a 13 lancer GT for my second car and for the fact I drive it like it's an Evo it's held up really well, 6 years down the road almost and the only mechanical issue I've had is a belt break.
@@rahimi4762Farmer WELL, there's lots of "good" cars that "mere mortals" can work on, (And A CTS is in my immediate future!, LOL). I just confined it to ones I already own (or owned), and know HOW to work on myself. LOL.
That’s why I only lease, 2017 X3, 2019 X5, 2022 X5. The inline 6 with 8 speed auto is some sweet power train. And yes, it has the highest depreciation around, however that occurs big time as the warranty ends. I would never buy one new or used. But you can buy extended warranties when new. Once the CANbus design took over in the 90s, forget it. When I started out young in my college days, all I could afford was a $500 car and learned how to fix it.

Pre 00's are the last of the non plastic BMWs sadly.
Things I learned in this video:
1. Avoid BMW
2. Teslas ride rough
3. Pigs don't sweat
Thank you kindly for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
I got a '97 Z3. They didn't have all that overengineering back then. The bugger is nearing 200,000 miles and still going strong.
BMW'S ARE GARBAGE ALWAYS HAVE BEEN
Made in south Carolina? Union free is the key. Do you really want someone building your car that gets paid for both good and shoddy work?
as a bmw enthusiast and owner i can assure you the best beemers were built between 1980 and 1995. i own 4 old bmws and never had any problems with them. if your bmw is bult before 1995 = ultimate driving machine. above 1995 = money pit
@Rick RR They haven't been making unreliable cars for that long, only very recently. Get your head out of your arse and quit being a sheep.
as a learning mechanic i learned that most codes are irrelevant, so even if i dont understand why a new car like the mercedes has that many, they shouldnt be a problem
Like Scotty's humble and truthful, you can't find anywhere else in RUclips
What would we all do without Scotty?
With luxury dealers or any dealer they treat you like garbage until they realize you have or make 6 figures or more.
I had a MB 4 wheel drive wagon. The 4wheel drive went bad on me, the dealer wanted 5K to fix it.Traded it in, no way.
The hood falling down couldn't of happened at a better time
Scotty, check this out, I bought a 2000 E39 520i BMW here in Ireland, for 1,600eur, kept it outside the house for a year, put it in for the national car test yesterday, and it passed straight off. All I did to it was stick the rear view mirror back up, tighten the handbrake, and buff the foggy headlight covers. It passed the emissions test with flying colours. The only advisory was the tyres were over 6 years old (still have tons of thread left on them)
Oh, I also fixed those little plastic adjusters in the headlights (all four of them, and then aligned the lights). There is always some plastic issue with them, you're not wrong
the bmw haters are speechless
The 14yo Beamer was unsurprising, the Tesla was somewhat surprising (particularly how the a/c wasn't working)... but the brand new *$150k+* Mercedes, with that many problems - built in *Alabama????* 🤣 Engineered like no other car is right!

Yep you got that right brother
Dodge doesn't have a great reputation either... I guess it's hit or miss, no matter what car...
@@NocThunder That's the same with euro cars, except they require more maintaining which many people don't do... Which is why they break...
You seriously need to be out of your mind paying 150K for that hideous lump of Mercedes. How far the formally mighty have fallen.
You can live in a car, but you can’t race a house. Always remember that
Your videos are very enlightening...and they crack me up! I can't believe how expensive that Etch A Sketch diagnostic tool is.
i feel bad for whoever owns that Mercedes lmao... i can imagine the owners reaction while Scotty grills his car hahahah.. you just got KILMER'D
I drove so many modern Mercedes, they dont have the same as soul as the ones made in the 70's and 80's
The Tesla sounds just like an electric forklift.🤣It is soulless. I don't care how good they run.. they are still an appliance shaped like a egg with wheels on them.
Yep you got it brother
Tesla IS a throw away APPLIANCE. Basically a non repairable computer on wheels. Wait till Scotty tries to repair one of those. LOL
@@springer-qb4dv Teslas are nothing but overpriced garbage
@@springer-qb4dv I looked at a video yesterday of a nice looking Tesla that needed a new battery pack and it was going to cost $22,000.. the owner bought a bunch of dynamite took it out in an isolated area that looks something like Montana and blew it up.🤣

That design with the display in the middle of the dashboard of the Tesla is genuinely bad design. It's actually flat out stupid. That would drive me insane while driving.
Latest on TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID (5th Generation) AWD
Just spoke to my brother who lives in Europe and is an automotive enthusiast, he said a Memo was just released regarding serious issue in RAV4 HYBRID...
Are volkswagens as bad ??
0:17 when you mentioned Shrek for layers, BMW said nah
At least Scotty had a good time while he saw all the faults of that Mercedes, we could all see how he laughed happily
Was that the Tesla owner clinching his fist at 11:50 after Scotty told us what he thinks?
You can tell that scotty hate this cars the way he talk about them 🤣🤣
A lot of rich ppl just dun care... They buy a new car every 3 or 4 years. What you said is not a problem for them. By the time the problems happen, they already sold their car. I think luxury cars should continue to have the fancy technology and affordable cars should be easy to maintanance with good durability.
Scotty, would you be able to make a video about Lexus LS400?
A neighbor is getting rid of a Lexus RX350 and waiting on a 2022 Tesla Model Y, talk about back sliding!
Common theme: focus on technology means expensive cars and expensive repairs.
1. BMW - too much plastic
2. Tesla - rough ride for luxury car, display location is wrong and you must look away from the road
