      True, but it still did a nice job as far as damage and penetration. So as a defensive round in states where semi-auto rifles are banned, it would have still been adequate. That being said, .357 SP rounds are definitely nicer, but I could see where someone concerned with over-penetration would perhaps want to go with a .38 Special round.

      @@ToolsandTargets I remembered that longer barrels mean more friction, and that means softer lead. Bullets that are slower out of pistols are going to be harder when they find their target, so less deformation and mushrooming. I think it's fully half of the equation. Keep up the good work, Sir. We're all very grateful for your efforts.

    This test reminded me why . 38 Special and . 357 mag are really among the most useful ever invented. You could head for the woods with a . 38 Spec revolver and a . 357 carbine and never skip a beat for defense or food in most places. And also rarely need full power mag ammo either.

  • @anangryranger
    @anangryranger Год назад +8

    Very good video! And yes, I was not surprised a bit. The 180 44Mag is not designed for that velocity. Knew it was going to come apart. Unless going to a 240gr JSP, they're likely to come apart. One of the reasons I sold my 44Mag levergun.
    The 357Mag and the 38hp, well, I expected both to do well. One reason why I cast a 160gr Keith SWC HP for both. Brutal on the hogs and coyotes that roam around my woods. Only thing meaner is my Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt. A 255gr cast SWC from a 20" barrel is a genuine hoss!

    Nice test to perform! I agree with your assessment of all three rounds. The one that surprised me the most was the .44 Magnum. It hit the gel block with incredible force. Yet the depth was so shallow. While the .38 Special gets considerably less boost in performance compared to the magnums, I've noticed that(at least in standard pressure rounds) they are incredibly quiet. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your tests like this with the lever action .357 Mag.

    As a defensive round in states where semi-auto rifles are banned, the .38 Special JHP round would be quite adequate. That being said, .357 SP rounds are definitely nicer, but I could see where someone concerned with over-penetration would perhaps want to go with a .38 Special round. People forget that bullets react different in wet material (like living tissue) versus hard material (wood, drywall, aluminum siding, etc...). People forget that SP and JHP bullets react differently in wet targets (living tissue) compared to hard materials like those used in home construction. As such, despite similar penetration levels in ballistics gel between the .38 SPC JHP round and the .357 magnum SP round, there's little doubt that the .357 magnum round would penetrate a lot more walls than than the slower .38 SPC round. This is a valid concern if you don't want rounds ending up in a neighbor's house.
    For hunting small to medium size game (like hogs and deer) however, there's no doubt that the .357 magnum SP round would be excellent as long as shot placement was good.

    Ammo manufacturers need to start posting on each Ammo type what length barrel it's designed for . So many bullets fail to expand or hold together because we are left guessing what barrel length they were designed for.

    I’ve done quite a bit of testing with that HTP 38 special lswchp from rifles. I have a ballistics test results video using HTP 38 special +p from a Rossi M92 16” on my channel. Nice video sir. I’d love to see some critical defense 38 special +p tests with that Henry!

    Been looking for this test, seems like a soft point is the optimal hunting cartridge for 357 rifle. Great expansion and penetration. Would be curious how PMC stacks up against Federal or Remington in a soft point. I was a little surprised at the velocity of the PMC 357 158 gr, thought it would be a little higher. 20" barrel might actually be slowing it down a little, 16 - 17 inches seems to be the optimal length for velocity.

    I have a Rossi lever gun in 357 magnum, and it is accurate, reliable, and I’ve shot it out to 200 yards. Cool to see this test in Gel though! Those pic bronze semijacketed flat nose are what I like to carry in my 357 magnums. Great test!
    Those 38 special were weak loads but man very consistent!
