IFLIX on your TV with ChromeCast

  • Watch IFLIX on your TV, cable free, with Google Chromecast.
    IFLIX recently added support to their iOS and android apps for Google ChromeCast.
    The ChromeCast plugs into the HDMI port on your TV and allows you to wirelessly stream IFLIX content from your Apple/Android device to your TV.
    It's compatible with iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad as well as Android phones and tablets.
    Technically the content is not streamed from your phone to the ChromeCast. The phone simply tells the Chromecast to connect to the IFLIX server and start streaming. Your phone then tells the ChromeCast to pause, play, forward, rewind etc.
    My thanks goes to Trish @ IFLIX for sending over a ChromeCast to use for this video :)

    Hi! I am trying to mirror my iFlix subscription from my iPhone 6S to a Samsung 4K TV. Thank you for your very straight to the point, & clear evaluation of the ChromeCast 1.0. I am convinced that this is prob the better way to go about this. Have you been able to do a review for the v2 model?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 лет назад

      I have the Chromecast v2 but I haven't shot a new review because it works exactly the same way. You won't notice any difference between the two models.

    This was helpful! Was wondering if there'd be performance issues using Chromecast 1 rather than Chromecast 2015.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      +Shaun Goh There's not that much difference between Chromecast first gen and second gen. It's mainly about the physical shape and way it hangs behind the TV and the wifi antennas. I have both and don't notice any difference between them.

    Hi. Just made a different comment thread. Do you know of any local seller selling the chromecast LAN adapter? Since it is ok when it is near my router. but when it is upstairs the streaming is not good enough. thanks

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      +Edmund Martinez Nope, haven't seen anyone selling it locally :( I was also looking for one before. Although more curiosity than actual need. I expect to see easier and cheaper availability of the Chromecast and accessories when Globe kicks into full gear as the local distributor/partner but it's a bit hit and miss right now.

    Hi Please respond. What is your bandwith speed. Your stream looks so clear fast and responsive. What is the minumum bandwith to attain this experience

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад +1

      Ian Steven Mancera In this video, I was using PLDT 5Mbps. IFLIX automatically adjust the quality of the stream depending on your internet connection. So even on slower connections it's pretty smooth! They're using the Akamai content delivery network and Akamai peer directly with PLDT and other ISPs like Globe (through phopenix). That means the content is stored in the Philippines or other nearby countries like Hongkong. So it streams much better than if you tried to stream content from servers in America or Europe.

  • @macmund
    @macmund 8 лет назад

    Thanks for the nice review. iFlix now has the option to download the movie/video. So is it possible to have it downloaded to your phone and then use chromecast. So that any bandwidth issues during streaming will not be a hassle?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      +Edmund Martinez Unfortunately you cannot watch downloads through Chromecast :( Maybe that will come in the future but I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

      +Gadget Addict Hi, I took the plunge and got the Chromecast version 2 with AC wifi. You are right that after I downloaded a TV episode (free trial of iflix) and tried to run via iflix, it wont work. HOWEVER, I also downloaded chromecast app in my android phone and used the mirror casting and guess what it works on lanscape mode with audio. :) Just like to share.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      ***** That's the same way I used iflix before they added chromecast support :P Unfortunately it's only suitable for Android since iOS devices don't support screen mirroring. Although not my preferred choice for putting content on the big screen, it's a valid method. Thanks for sharing!

    • @macmund
      @macmund 8 лет назад

      +Gadget Addict Oh ok so that is not available for apple iOS. Seems my xmas upgrade for phones still will be an android :) I do hope the iflix app will be able to even play downloaded content in the future. fingers crossed.

    • @GadgetAddict

      ***** Yeah cos I think Apple don't wanna let Google mirror the screen since it competes with Airplay screen mirroring and they have rules about apps competing with built in functionality blah blah. A shame really :( But agreed, hopefully IFLIX can work out the logistics and licensing to allow playback of downloads on Chromecast!

      +Aaron Kristoffer Espares many TVs are now being sold with chromecast support already being built in. If your tv has that, no need to buy the chromecast. If you're talking about miracast then you'll find Iflix and hooq don't have official support for that.

    • @waomin
      @waomin 8 лет назад

      +Gadget Addict yes i have micracast and screen mirroring. but I can cast iflix and youtube too. whenever i tap the cast button on the screen. i can even cast my iPad. so does that mean i already have a built in chromecast on my tv?

    • @GadgetAddict

      +Gadget Addict By the way, I finally got to try HBO Go with both Chromecast and Apple TV 4. It works but the quality isn't that good compared to Netflix. Feels like 240p resolution even on a 50 mbps connection vs Netflix PH's HD (maybe 1080p or at least 720p) resolution.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      Randy Escalada Oh really? That's interesting to hear. Thanks for the info! How about the line up of content?

    • @RandyE229
      @RandyE229 8 лет назад

      It's okay-ish but considering how much you need to pay for the service ("free" with the add-on 350-peso HBO Pack with Skycable), it's kinda pricey.
      You can check out the content by going to www.hbogoasia.ph/ in your browser. You don't have to have an account to browse their list of content. Some of their shows/movies are available free without an HBO Go account.
      HBO Go app that works with this service is available in the Philippine App Store.

    How is the quality of iFlix movies/tv shows? Are most in 1080p/720p? And how big is their library?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад +1

      ***** Even when watched on a fairly big TV, the quality looks really good for most content. It's hard to be specific about the quality because they use the MPEG DASH streaming technique which adapts the bitrate depending on your connection and even the performance of your computer or device. But I'd say it's pretty much on par with what you'd expect from 720p. I believe they're experimenting with streaming full 1080p HD but it's limited to a few movies right now, like Kung Fu Panda. I expect that supporting 1080p is nothing more than a configuration option. But of course they have to ensure everything runs smoothly with their servers, the content delivery network, users devices etc etc. Maybe I should shoot a video comparing the quality on different speed connections.

    • @charlestabing9777
      @charlestabing9777 9 лет назад

      Gadget Addict thank you very much for explaining.. we are currently on cable and I don't really watch tv that much but I do want some tv shows like GoT, and other(maybe all) comic book shows. so I really want to know which shows are included. The price is very promising nonetheless.

    • @kohkokwei
      @kohkokwei 9 лет назад

      AFAIK, even if iflix supports 1080p streaming, chromecast has a limitation of up to 720p only (correct be if I'm wrong). I've tried iflix over chromecast in Malaysia but quality looked like 480p since I'm also using Netflix over chromecast and it looks like HD 720p. Is it my connection speed, or is it iflix over chromecast isn't HD yet?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад

      +Kok Wei Koh Sorry, super late reply. IFLIX is meant to be 'comparable to 720p' and has some test content streaming at a higher rate that is meant to be comparable to 1080p. I say 'comparable' because it's more than just resolution that matters, it's also bitrate for example. Remember that IFLIX uses MJPEG-DASH which is adaptive, meaning your connection speed and reliability will determine how good a picture you get from IFLIX.

    Hi, ok so upon streaming via Chromecast, I can off my phone and control it via the HDMI CEC remote right? But how do I go back to choose which movie i want to watch next? Do I still have to go back to my phone/laptop to surf the channels/choose movies, etc? Please help, tx!

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад +1

      Pant Ene You pretty much have it all correct :) Once the chromecast starts the movie, your phone isn't needed anymore. Through the TV remote you can pause and play the movie and adjust the volume. If you need to skip to another part of the movie or change the movie completely then you will need your phone again. Hopefully Google will upgrade the Chromecast to also support rewind/forward buttons over HDMI CEC, for now it's just the play and pause button. Hope this helps :)

    • @kohkokwei
      @kohkokwei 9 лет назад

      Take note that every smart device at home within the same wifi network with the iflix app installed can act as a remote to the Chromecast... It doesn't have to be only controlled by the device that initiated the playing on the TV. You can switch in between devices.

    • @CarloCastillo
      @CarloCastillo 9 лет назад +1

      +Eric Nyamu I don't think so (I'm speaking from my experience with the ChromeCast here). For apps like iflix, RUclips, Haystack and others that stream video content, the ChromeCast skips talking through your phone/tablet and communicates directly with the corresponding service. So basically, only the initial contact with the service when accessed on the app on your phone/tablet will draw processing and battery power from your device. If you select a new content item within the app you're using, that will also draw power. But actual playback is handled by the ChromeCast itself.
