- You've heard it said before - "The best camera is the one you have with you"... While we don't completely agree with that, there is a lot of truth to it. And now more than ever, almost any camera you can get your hands on will yield great results... So today we take a look at filmmaking with an iPhone.

“Camera doesn’t matter”
Me: films movie with a laptop
Urboyb 🤣
I think they actually shot the first Unfriended like this? Or at least they only used webcams. So yeah, the movie was a piece of shit but it's doable.
Urboyb just use it for editing 🤣
Me: Films with PS4
Hahahahahahahaha hahahah
Same
When I first saw the short, I thought it was shot against a green screen, which seemed like an odd choice to me. Then I saw the BTS and saw you shot it in your backyard after all, and wondered why it looked that way. This video clears a lot up for me.
i thought the exact same and it confused the hell out of me
Me as well
The background does look like I really crappy green screen effect...it just looks so...flat.
It’s because of the lighting
Sooooo happy to see big RUclipsr talk about using cellphone to film my whole RUclips page is dedicated to filming using a cell phone keep up the good work guys hope you make more videos about using your cell phone
This is so encouraging to me. I’m interested in learning film making but thought I needed expensive gear.
me too but i you wanna be in my short film
im in texas
lets do it
@@Q.Cfilms what's it about cowboy
Nikolas McNabb haha no , its a drama, syfy show
The fight scene was incredible , very good guys .
I used an iPhone at my job for about 3 months primarily for interviews of employees to send out to customers. One of those was amazing looking and the rest were pretty good and one just awful. I showed employers the work, and they decided I knew what I was doing and allowed me to buy a mic to start off with. Went with NTG4+ and when the audio amazed them they said I could have a budget of 8k including the mic. GH5, four lenses, set of lights, mavic pro, light/c stands, etc. All because I started with an iPhone. Don't let yourself get in your way of your own success.
"You don't need 1000$ camera, 1000$ phone is okay"
+404Anymouse $600 phone (the price of a cheaper DSLR) not even close to a pro-level price. This defeatist attitude is what I'm talking about in the episode. Bummer the message is lost on you.
Film Riot But you have to ask yourself what's more important, whether what you wanted to say or what it looks at first glance (wooww my iPhone is so good people can't tell it from professional camera). I got that but what's bugging me about this video is what it looks like to most people.
Honestly, If it looks like that to you, that one is on your personal thinking, not much we can do about that. The point of this episode (which was stated multiple times) is that you don't need a pro level camera to do good things. To prove that, I used my personal cell phone to make a sketch... The funniest part about this is that no one was complaining when they thought we used either a $5,000 camera or a $12,000 camera to shoot that sketch last week... This week we show that it was actually just a cell phone (which most people already have one) and complaints come out like crazy. I think more than anything else it just reveals the very toxic thinking some people have.
That thinking will only hurt you/them. Take the message of the video (it doesn't matter what you shoot on) and run with it. Go make great content with whatever gear you have and don't let it stop you.
@@filmriot how would you guys compare filming on a consumer lever camera such as the Sony a68 vs iPhone. Dslrs obviously has
the interchangeable lens advantage but iPhone has superslomo etc
ahhaha XD
Every filmmaker: camera doesn't matter.
Me: Here. Take this Nokia 6600 and make a movie
Flyin G if it has camera it's completely possible. IPhone is same price as some good dslrs anyway.
Radek Wójs yeah. It does have 0.3 megapixel camera
Flyin G enough

richcox yeahm give me an iPhone which costs 500$ and I give u movie like video
Thank you for sharing how important the story and content are in film. It's the reason all your sketches are funny regardless of how they are shot. The camera is not the most important part of the job.
You are some tricky filmmakers. Thanks. I teach filmmaking and have been exploring the idea of using cellphones for beginners who think they need a ton of gear to make a movie. Today, you have almost no excuses to not be making a movie.

Great video! I’ve been watching you since I was a sophomore in high school, I’m going to be 27 now! You’ve been an inspiration since I started making videos! What’s crazy is that I have a DSLR with wireless and wired mic’s and everything but for my videos I actually PREFER filming on my phone. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and it makes it so much easier! Especially now since my laptop has been stolen so now I have no way to edit aside from my phone. I purchased InShot (which you can get for free) and I film everything on my phone. I film, Edit, and put it out all on my phone! So easy even for beginners. I hope all is well! Greetings from an American living in Mexico 👋🏼🇺🇸🇲🇽
"No excuse anymore, the only thing that's stopping you is your own drive and passion to create". These were the words I needed to hear. Thank you!

The amount of negative comments on this isn't funny!
I honestly love what you guys did and it's extremely helpful to me as I've been filming everyday for a week and these tips will definitely come in handy ❤️❤️
I have the huawei p30 lite and the camera is quite good and I think I'll manage...
Thank you again 🌸
Preach! I use Filmic Pro too but I really need to play with the setting more. Thanks for the preset tip!
You did a video like this a few months back and I took it to heart. Now I have six phones a light kit and do several multicam jobs including TV commercials using them. I'm also in the process of filming a reality TV style RUclips show and these are great. Thank you for all you guys do I love the channel and find everything invaluable
Yo that's amazing. I hope to get on your level one day
CGARTISTE TheBigJay same for me, though not doing paying stuff. i bought filmic and all the peripherals along with 4 iphone 4s's. Along with my ipad and a few apps that do multicam, I can do anything I want. Worked very well doing man on street interviews.
What apps?
Congrats! What are you using as an ND filter?
Pedro Costa they do get "hot" or pretty warm if using for extended times. But it probably helps that I don't do that much at all. I usually just record 5-10 minute segments at a time.
You guys should do a lighting tutorial while shooting with a phone!
Great episode guys :) Super happy to see content like this!
Glad you dig it.
Filmic pro has so much noise how do you get rid of it ?
does a Gameboy camera work?
Echo Light Media only like 40 frames can be shot haha.
Echo Light Media can I use a instax mini?
content that matter
Theoretically, yes. It'd be a pain in the ass, but you can make it work.
Maybe at 1 Frame per second😂
This was good for me. I use an iPhone for my channel. I also use Filmic Pro but not as frequently due to some of the inconsistencies you encountered.
Kind of a moot argument when the phone is very expensive, you're using professional lighting, a gimbal, tacking on a bunch of accessories, editing with after effects, etc etc etc. If you want to prove equipment doesn't matter, shoot on a cheap camera, use free software, make use of natural light, etc! Besides, it'll make the footage look more genuine and less over-produced and gimmicky. The real fix for a lack of equipment is good writing/storytelling.
This episode is so important. Even with all the advancement in filming equipment, the gear still doesn't make you a better filmmaker; making films does.

A year ago when I was in school, I had a project where the professor only had ONE rule: "Do NOT shoot with your iPhone." Now I could have easily shot with a T3I, but because I wanted a deep focus for long tracking shots, I went with the iPhone and he never noticed or questioned it!!! The short is still on my channel
Great job creating a teachable moment Ryan
Great video. For anyone who is looking for a better option, use the Google Pixel XL. By far the best camera phone in town! Ditched my 7 Plus for it.
I've heard that the Pixel has great quality. I may check it out eventually.
For blocking some of the light falling on your screen you should have used a tea box or any other small box, cut the top and bottom and tape it just to the top part of your phone so that it can flip out for you to use the touchscreen and then flip back on your phone held in place by gravity. Edit: or use back wrap and fashion a hood yourself
This is why Film Riot is my "Go-To" source for filmmaking tips and tutorials!! Thank you for all the priceless lessons and help you provide for us, Ryan. I'm truly grateful!!
Plot twist: Most Hollywood movies were filmed with a 3DS.
Decoding Department makes sense
who said iphone is cheap
DesiNerd Good camera does matter. If you don't agree then try watching youtube at 240p and you'll know.
dhruv kumar Dude.. No camera shoots 240p. You could buy the cheapest camera for 50bucks and it would still shoot 720p at best
16gb at its cheapest
Compared to $3,000+ cameras, we do. ;)
If you have good credit you can get get pretty affordable payments for a capable smartphone. This is a little more challenging for taking out a loan for cameras and gear
Others: We can't afford a camera to shoot videos.
Me: I can't even afford an iPhone to shoot videos
One of the best (in my opinion) videos I've ever made was shot on a Galaxy Note 4. Great advice Ryan and crew.
HOLY SHIT! I loved the sketch from last week, and it looked beautiful! I loved the look, and really thought it was just a different lens!
Crazy what our phones can do now-a-days.
You just blew my mind.. that sketch looked SOOO GOOD!!! I always have people asking me what camera to use and I tell them to use their phone, and most people scoff at me. I'm just gonna show them this video.
I felt it was a bit off, like one of these real hdr-pictures you find online - just way over the top. The lack of depth was one thing but i thought it was from the weird positions and the makeup was amplifying that effect. But now i know.
I don't like the idea of filming with a device, that might as well vibrate mid shoot because its not build for getting the shot, but for communicating with others. The lack of depth isn't my biggest complaint with the look and when the camera doesn't move it's ok, but when the camera moves it just looks bad. The wiggling from that small device and the digital stabilizer which only fools you if you aren't really paying attention, keeps me from even thinking about using my phone for anything serious.
And putting the camera on an osmo is just cheating, you might as well get a real camera at that price.
"The best camera is the one you left at home" is more my way of thinking^^
Like, what the what you can so it using a Phone, your channel has everything i Need
now to use my grandma's flip phone
This is a really refreshing outlook. I don't really know anything about film making or cameras, but I do audio recording and have gained an interest in film recently.
The same idea is true in the audio world too; people will often say that a certain expensive mic is what's needed to make your recordings next level, but ultimately it's down to the recording engineer. No-one is going to listen to a song and moan that a certain product wasn't used in the production as long as the overall result is good... the same idea applies here too, as you've demonstrated.
Cool to see that. But indeed the IPhone is not an example of low budget 'gear' as some people stated in the comments. Also the average camera quality on cheaper is not that impressive. Also because you have to consider the pricing differences between countries. Sometimes your cheap may be very expensive elsewhere or vice versa. Where I live for example the cheaper products do not have a high standard on quality.
But anyway, I still can agree with the fact that even lower quality products can make your project come to life. Only problem is that it won't stand out when comparing to other projects in terms of visual and sound quality and it DOES limit the projects you can make (if you plan on shooting in lower light conditions with an ASUS phone, it won't be good.)
So in the end, if you can't make the visuals of your project stand out, invest more time on the writing so then people will have a stronger reason to look for it.
The iPhone is a phone. One that I already have, which is the point that is being made. And any iPhone from the 4 on has solid enough quality. You can get the same if not better from a t2i or t3i, which you can get starting around $200 on eBay.
The point of this episode is that you don't need a $5,000+ camera to do good work. And either way, you can get an iPhone 7 on eBay for $500, that is a very low-cost camera for one that shoots 4k.
Saulo Sampaio br
Thanks for the inspiration. This really cuts out the excuses myself and others make for not shooting anything. The good news is, you can see if your idea/story will work before buying or renting expensive equipment.
The reality is that PLANNING is what makes this possible. When you're winging it on your shots/etc this is super difficult.
I love how this guy is funny and uses silly humor in many videos, while actually being both technically brilliant and wise. Listen and learn, folks. Great channel.
Been involved with film and television production for years now. The best lesson I have learned is that its the story that matters most. No one cares what kind of equipment you have. They just care about the end result.
DAmn! Seriously, 100%, on everything, I did NOT think the last episode was shot on an iPhone. Literally no idea. I don't really read through comments, so I didn't see if anyone said anything; but I truthfully didn't even expect it!
Awesome stuff man. Ive used red's and alexa's, all the way down to iPhones. Now, with the super cheap gimbals coming out for smartphones, you can literally intercut iPhone footage with Red footage -- I've done it.
I see so many comments that essentially say (passive-aggressively), "ohh, well pshh. PFFFT. Yeah, lyke, aDUH. I loyke, totally knEEEwww that loyke, sh!t was onna diff fone buh-like, I din't evan caaaaaaaaaarre breh ~"
It's like, yes dude. You clearly did care, and still do, way too much, about gear choice.

Awesome video, with a conclusion that pretty much sums up what I've been thinking all along: Gear matters, but it shouldn't be your main focus when creating.
I have gear but it's film riot so I'm gonna watch it anyways!
I cannot explain to you how happy I am that you did this. I hear all the time of people being held back due to not having gear....and now I can point them to this video, whilst giving them the finger. Day=Made.
+NiftYeee
I love how this is supposed to be a "Your Camera Doesn't Matter" video, but he spent more time in post correcting the settings he double checked while filming. This is the reason why I am buying a pro cinema camera, I'm tired of things not being in focus even though I've double checked focus, I'm tired of not having the dynamic range I want, I'm tired of the camera not being intuitive and clunky with settings. I use a Sony a6500 atm and although when it does it's job, it creates spectacular images, I don't have the budget to keep doing reshoots because of the camera having issues.
WOW!!! Way better than "OPERATION" which you did also with an iPhone years ago. Thanks for this!
If you choose the right cast, right location, right editor and right screenplay, then no, Your Camera Doesn't Matter. This video was a good example of how to f**k up on every level.
Don’t forget the nice 3rds grid the filmic app provides, that’s pretty cool, also merged nicely with the DJI gimbal too.
Thanks for featuring my comment! lol. You guys are super helpful! If only you received commission on all the expensive gear I buy! Chris : D
I WON'T be upgrading to a C300mk2 just yet!
I did most of my recent videos on my current smartphone (Nokia Lumia 830) and didn't bother to play around with the settings. It was literally just "point and shoot". I found that using tripods with a phone bracket also improved things rather than just holding the phone in my hand. Even just using a selfie stick produced better results. I recently bought a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition and I'm still getting to grips with the fact that is has a wide angle lens so shooting with it is different to the Nokia. In editing, I just cut down the clips without playing around with the settings except for the time lapse videos where I select one of the presets. This makes for a quick and easy way of putting together videos. I remember seeing a short video (the Commuter) that was shot on a smartphone but everything else was done professionally. It just goes to show what is possible with a smartphone.
Jesus Christ... Filming Pro got SO GOOD!
Have really missed these videos for getting great results with basic equipment!:)
Now do this with the LG V30, the phone made for videos.
The video out of the v30 sucks
I love this channel so much it’s brief straight to the point and very helpful for me saying I want to do a series
I do get the point and I don't see why the gimbal or microphone seems like a catch to some people. However you are obviously using a filter, bounces and shields which, while they may not be very pricey, obviously take time to acquire and expertise to set up. Long story short:
*One* can create awesome imagery with just a mobile phone. *You* not necessarily.
But that should not hinder you from trying :)
P.S. You meaning the viewer. (Me inclusive)
Thank you Film Riot! I've been watching for a while and as a teen who can't get access to expensive gear I kept referring to your short film: Operation that was Film on on iPhone. Thank you for going more in detail with Filmic!
Oh, and PLEASE do an episode that shows how to get good audio in a noisy location. I like film at locations that are often filled with people chatting. Thanks
"The only thing stopping you is your own drive and passion to create." AND your lack of practical experience and skills. AND The absence of friends to act with or money to higher actors. AND the lack of makeup artists to make blood squirt out of your head. AND the lack of all those other things they used that weren't iPhones (Lens they taped to the outside, special tripod mounts, lights I assume.)
But yeah! It totally doesn't matter what gear you have or anything else. The only thing stopping you is yourself.
Channel 46 Don't worry You can start with cheap equipments. There are 10-15$ lights on ebay some
Ryan, this video is so important. Thanks for always moving forward.
I actually use my iPhone to shoot pretty much all my videos. Even with all those vfx, seriously, check it out. You can't notice it was from a phone and NOT a camera
Operation is still my favourite short from you guys
Trolls be like: what if you can't afford an iPhone even?!
+Acrylic Studios I know right! It's shocking how many people are missing the point being made.
If there is a will, there is a way :-). Film Riot rules.
This is great, I’ve been trying to get into filmmaking but was pressured to buy expensive stuff, but instead my phone can work great. Thanks!
The correct video to watch after ordering my gh5 lmao
Great Video. I love the analogy about driving a screw with a drill or a screw driver. If a carpenter shows up with a screw driver and charges by the hour I'm probably gonna send them home.

So maybe Shyamalan co-wrote these episodes
Nice job on this! Awesome to see others doing what they love.
What if your phone has a terrible camera like mine?
The point is, they are showing how to film with a phone, but they are using a 7s... not every one owns a high dollar phone......
Nice. Your only limited by yourself. Love it!!!
I was in the video!! Thanks Film Riot! :)
I love FilmicPro too! I use it on all my videos shot with the iPhone 7+.
holy crap filmic pro looks SOOOO muchbetter nowadays.
You can use the Filmic Remote app to control the camera you are filming with. I use it a lot and it help specially when you are filming and it is hard to see the camera screen, just take the remote device and go into the shades and control everything. People are so into the gear that they forget the story or content. Use whatever you have and do a good story or have interesting content, that is the most important thing. Just learn the tech you have and start with that.
Wow, that's some app!
This is awesome!!! I fully agree! Me and my friends made a flash fan film that is to our surprise growing tremendously on our channel on RUclips and has almost 400k views right now! But we shot the whole 1 hour 12 minute movie in iPhone 7s and 8s!!!! This vidoe was very helpful and I agree ! It’s the drive not the equipment! For me it is easier to use an iPhone because how used to it I am!! Thankyou guys for being awesome and producing amazing content !
strange to title "camera does not matter" when you had unpredictable shots out of focus, a camera that would stop in the middle of the shot due to overheating, wobbly nd filter holding with tape or sound failure due to fiddly mic connector. with the pressure and stress we have on a shoot, we really do not need more predicatable problems coming for the gear or adding extra work in post when we always end up being late. for me the conclusion is "gear do matter" but more in the sense of being reliable/easy to work with than purely in term of final image quality.
it reminds me of the zacuto camera shootout where the dp using the iphone had to do a lot of extra work in lighting setup and postprod to compensate for the image weakness of the iphone. the extra hours of work were not worth the $300 difference between an iphone that cost $0 and a used gh2 that cost $300.
Fantastic episode. Story is most important. I had doubts shooting my web series on a t3i because people told me it wasn't "standard" quality. Then I showed it to them and told them it was a 5D... they were none the wiser.
Honestly, I've found the FilmicPro to be buggy. ProMovie Recorder is a lot more stable.
Have you had a chance to contact the support team? They may be able to resolve any issues you have run into: support@filmicpro.com
Kevin, thank you for reaching out! I haven't, and I'll consider it, when I happen to give FilmicPro another try :)
Ha! I caught the end reference! You mentioned it in a previous episode.
I'm colorblind do you have this lesson is brail?
Yes! Our phones are capable of sooooo much more than people realize. Instead of negative comments about what your phone can't do, get creative, learn some basic techniques, and start shooting! I learn more shooting than watching videos every time. Thx for posting, guys!!
So I know a video with "the camera doesn't matter" isn't the best place to ask this... but, I've been looking into upgrading my camera. The two I've been looking at are the c100mkii and the Sony a7sii. I'm fourteen and currently shoot on the Panasonic G7, when I bring it a small mirrorless camera on shoots and since I'm fourteen I find peopple often don't take me as serious as when I bring a bigger cam.... is that something I should be thinking about when I buy my next camera? I'm currently leaning towards the c100mkii
Echo Productions - Whoever hires you should have seen your work beforehand, right? And if they hired you, they did it for the quality, bot for your camera. Remind them of that, lol.
Elite Lens Films Yes, that is true.... but I'm still looking to upgrade anyway. Thanks :)
as someone that used the gh4 and now uses the gh5, and has used the c100mk2 - I wouldnt use the c100. It has a profile that is on par with the gh5 but lacks features like 4k, 180fps slowmo, and most notably IBIS. as you are probalaby well aware the gh5 will not perform better than either the a7sii or c100 in autofocus but will wipe the floor with almost everything else
Echo Productions it's the skill that matters not the age!
Your question can't be answered. First you need to know how/for what you are going to use your camera. You are not stating that. There is no 'best camera'. There is only the right camera for the job. The C100mkii is a great run&gun camera with zero hassle, great colors out of the box and everything just works. With Sony camera's you will get higher framerates and true 4k, but in return you get poor battery life, sucking menu's that you will spend hours of your life in, crappy autofocus because you will probably adapt lenses... etc etc. But if you have the time to set up your shot properly and spend hours on color grading, and don't have to run&gun... then Sony or BlackMagic is great. If you need to run&gun, Canon baby
Yes!!!! Keep up the good work👍
Do the best you can with what you have!
Says Gear doesn't matter... Shoots 4K with an Iphone 7 on a Gimbal...
Exactly. most people have a phone and gimbals are fairly cheap.
I have a small tip: If you have a Mac (preferably a MacBook) you can connect it via USB and open up QuickTime Player, open New Movie Recording and set camera to your iPhone, this way you can see everything that is happening on your iPhone screen on your MacBook screen that is bigger and brighter. Unfortunately, then you cannot plug an external microphone with the lightning dongle.
Legends say that if you're early he reacts on your comment
Dude, just watching the rundown of your setting and the capabilities of that app made me realize how little I know about filming haha. I had to pause to make this I comment. Thanks in advance for the whole video. I am sure to learn a lot.

Yes because why wouldn’t something good on a phone cost $15
Great post! Film Riot is THE best channel on indie filmmaking.
Dick Tracy Watch I think I know of another great place ;)
ok but if your shooting on a iphone you kinda are using an expensive camera. the modern iPhones shoot 4k and have amazjng quality. however the modern iPhones are certainly not cheap. what about someone like me where my phone is a cheaper android and not like an s8 or anything. i can only shoot in like 720 and the frame rate is pretty low so i might be able to get decent quality but i cant throw in to much movement into the mix or then it wont matter that its in hd. i like the topic but the modern iphones really are just basically expensive cameras
Most modern mobile devices have solid enough quality to get started with. The point here is not to say the iPhone specifically, the point is (as I said in the episode) it doesn't matter if you have a $300 DSLR or a $50,000 camera. We are at a point now that any of these can be used to get a good end result. The only thing that really matters is to cut excuses and work on the content.
Ayy, I feel like half the people trying to make videos these days are waiting till they have a RED haha.
sell whatever phone you have and your overpriced yeezys and get an iphone se. Costs almost nothing and you can't complain about the kamera
We shot our first 30 minute short film with a HP still camera 12 years ago and it's high quality videos looked like something between 144p and 240p does in RUclips. For the next longer film we bought a slightly more expensive camera. It was the cheapest possible mini-DV camcorder we could find because we didn't have the money to buy better. After couple of shorts we bought Rode Videomic for better audio and made a short film with the local police department to be shown in schools for hundreds of students. That got us some connections and for our next film local community college borrowed us professional gear for free. After that we've been using cheap DSLRs, rental cameras and gear we can get from friends studying in film schools. Just start making videos and short films and build up your skills along with your gear. 480p is just fine to start making content, 720p is even better. Learn with what you got in front of you and when your scripts start getting longer and dreams bigger and you still can't buy expensive cameras or even an iPhone, borrow a friends DSLR or iPhone or get in touch with someone who has a camera and start making stuff with them.
Totally! Great attitude and awesome to your progression! Inspiring :)
LOVE THIS! I've been 95% filming on iPhone with filmic for 2 years. So good and it works with the dji osmo mobile.
And...where do we get the shirt!?!?
