Thank you for sharing your knowledge I didn't have a clue on how to get mine on. God bless

Never seen the boil method, looks like it worked great. Mine came off and went on without doing that. It was smooth with no oil slings and went inside the sand seal that had been in the case. I really wish it had the stock pulley. Ordered me a reproduction albeit in Aluminum and was bummed it did not fit onto my crankshaft, I thought they were universal. So chrome one goes back on uggghhh!!

James those aftermarket pulleys do have threads on the back. he also mentions hell torque down the pulley once it cools

That pulley is part of the crankcase ventilation system. to put a seal on it will block the system. Also the thread on the pulley should be LEFT HAND. The pulley you installed has right hand threads, and at speed, could sling oil all over the engine compartment.

The sand seal is for off road applications. Many places have them. Also...what do you mean about the treads? I have never seen a crank bolt with right hand threats. If you are talking about the grooves on the back of the pulley, it doesn't matter what hand the thread is just so long as they are there.

The pulley threads DO matter. They are designed to pull any oil back into the crankcase that is collected on the pulley end, instead of allowing the oil to to be thrown by centrifugal force all over the engine compartment. This effect is most pronounced at highway speed. The after market makers of these pulleys are not as slick as the German engineers, or Dr. Porsche who built this excellent design feature. This void in the pulley end also serves as a part of the crankcase ventilation system, air is introduced into the crankcase at this point.

What you are talking about is the little yellow piece in the attached picture. That is what I call the "Air Sucker Screw"...it's the only yellow piece in the pic. Please see attached link: s281.photobucket.com/user/atfsushichef/media/VW/crank_assembly_installed.jpg.html

Rob:No the yellow part in the photo is the drive for the distributor. I'm talking about the substandard after market CRUD pulleys. The thread grooves, MUST be left hand, in order to retrieve oil, and NOT to eject oil. RUclips has videos on this, I don't recall them just now. Sorry for that shortcoming.

I don't see any pictures of pulleys with threads cam you find one and tell me where it is to view I don't see what your talking about?

Nice trick with the pulley in hot water, to prevent the discoloration of the pulley, if I may make a suggestion, you should be able to put the pulley in the oven and I don’t think it will discolor. In theory all that is happening is the metal is expanding and that’s what makes the pulley slide in easier. Your suggestion of installing some kind of seal on top of the existing seal where the pulley goes on the crankshaft, I think that would make the pulley protrude out a little away from the engine case and that would make the fan belt be on an angle and not line up with the generator/alternator pulley. Also isn’t the crankshaft pulley supposed to be torque down?
Ashley said the thread on the pulley should be LEFT HAND, there is no thread on the pulleys, and the thread is in the crankshaft. So you will never find a left hand thread on the crankshaft.

James Reed: Please read my answer to Rob Probasco, then you will be properly informed. Also google an image of a pulley, and notice the thread grooves they are left hand from the factory, and right hand from the after market. The Factory ones are correct.

Duffy you saved my ass from a huge headache, I've worked on many motors but first time I've owned a vw anything and when I was trying to instal my new crankcase pulley on my sandrail, I was about ready to beat it to death with a hammer after trying everything else I have ever done to get that bitch on there including a tool made to press them on with no progress. Thanks so much for taking the time to make the video about expanding it with heat. Even the guy that owns the vw performance shop here didn't mention that it was going to be impossible without expanding it using heat. Thanks again. If I see you around lunch and a beer or 2 is on me bro!! Thanks rottnrotti@yahoo.com.
