  • This is the 161st video on the 1961 VW Beetle with 65 pan. In this video I replace the aluminum pulley with a stock steel pulley. I am so tired of the issues with aluminum pulley wearing out and becoming wobbly. This should be a permanent fix with stainless steel nut and bolt, stock pulley and new 905 toothed belt.

    I really love the Volkswagen Beetle these cars are one of my favorite brands and models class❤

      Yes! And a great car to work on for its simplicity of design. I am surprised how much I like the bug, both working on it and driving it…

    Wayyy better now! Is always better with stock oem parts! In this case stock pulley’s! Great job!👌😎👍

      Yes - it is way more firmly in place now and I am totally happy with the setup…

    Dang yea pulled that aluminum pulley off by hand ,that's garbage

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Год назад

      Yeah - the tolerance should be that you need to hammer it on with a mallet - at least somewhat. I think any looseness like that with a softer aluminum metal would be toast after a while, no matter what you do…

  • @PWB87

    Thanks, i was thinging of getting an aluminum pulley, but now ill stick with the steel. Also, if pulley bolt and generator nut are torqued to spec, they shouldn't come loose. I'd avoid loctite if possible, and only use blue if absolutely nessary. The red can be impossible to disassemble.

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Год назад +2

      Yeah, the aluminum was great at first - looked great and has the degree markings - but the metal is softer and it is looser to begin with on the crankshaft with the woodruff key, and after a while it can come loose and mess up the fit. I found that since you can put the car in gear, the loctite red can also be disassembled, but it prevents any motor vibration and pulley movement from jiggling it loose. I think everyone has their experiences getting burned on something and then trying to prevent it from happening again in the future…

    I'm surprised the stock pulley didn't already have TDC, 7.5 and 10 degrees marked with small cut-outs along the rim's edge.

      Oh, maybe I didn’t look closely enough. I didn’t see any, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there…

    Very good video… I’m curious did you have to change the belt size ?

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Месяц назад +1

      No - I used a stock 7” pulley in both cases so I used the stock 905 V-belt. If you change the pulley size to be a power pulley or something then you would have to adjust….

    I haven’t had any issues with the aluminum pulleys. I do however open the center up just a bit so the slide on the crankshaft with just a little resistance.

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Месяц назад

      I had 2 aluminum pulleys bend out the center and become wobbly. Steel is steel, and harder for the crankshaft to bend - steel on steel. But it may be because the pulley bolt came loose

    My '64 is all stock! The way the Germans designed it!!

      Stock is great. Mine looks pretty stock but it has a ton of new stuff on it - big motor, etc…. But since mine is a 1961 body on a 1965 chassis, it is already a Frankenstein - but an untrained eye wouldn’t know it!

    What brand of aluminum pulley did you use?

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think it was CB - but the pulley was fine - then the bolt loosened up and it mangled the pulley and was never the same - once it is a bit loose on the crankshaft, it will never hold no matter how much loc-title you put on there.

    We call them baring killers down here in oz, worst idea ever!! Mixing a steal crank with a softer alloy will never work long term. ;)

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Год назад

      Yeah - I guess you learn that through experience. The interesting thing is why aren’t there more steel pulleys with the tight fit that have the degree numbers on them and look good. The only ones are like Gene Berg for $250 bucks - for a pulley!

    Like you I am trying to get a new or OEM steel pulley for my bug I'm restoring, since mine is bent. The problem I have is that the billet steel ones available from EMPI and other manufacturers seem to run different sizes than stock that I see, which make the fan ratio less than it should. I don't want my engine to run hotter than necessary. Ideally, I want a steel one with timing markings that is 100% stock dimensions with the two puller holes. Somehow, no one is making this. I definitely do NOT want an aluminum pulley and your video confirmed that for me.
    An example of what I've been finding:
    <
    "Customize your Volkswagen and increase bearing and engine life with EMPI's Steel Billet Balanced Heavy Weight 3.5 pound VW Crank Pulley. The silver zinc plated pulley has timing marks printed around the edge. The crankshaft pulley fits 1200cc (40 Horsepower) to 1600cc Type 1 and 2 engines.
    The outer diameter of this pulley is roughly 6 3/4"/171mm. Coupled with a standard upper pulley with an outer diameter of 4.25"/108mm the pulley ratio would be approximately 1 to 1.58, meaning the fan will turn 1.58 times every time the cranks makes one full revolution which is less than the factory ratio of 1.69."
    >
    Any idea if there are steel pulleys with timing marks that are 100% made for stock?
    *sigh* I may have to get my stock pulley that is a little bent, try peening it back into shape, buy a cheap aluminum one, and trace the timing marks on it that way. It's Black Friday, so I'm trying to figure this out fast lol. Open to suggestions from anyone, thanks again.

      You want a 7 inch steel pulley - I think something like this is pretty good: www.jbugs.com/product/113105251G.html

    I'm not sure the thread locker was a good idea, stainless steel easily gauls and becomes impossible to remove unless you use anti-seize compound.

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah - time will tell. The steel pulley is much tighter and less likely to come off anyway - but now I got thread lock on there!

    Maybe I missed it but did you do BDC as well?
    Btw, I world never use an impact on the alternator/generator pulley nut. Use a wrench and a screw driver. There’s my 2 cents

    • @LarsonSplitBus-
      @LarsonSplitBus-  Год назад

      Yeah - I should have done BDC as well - it will be annoying for me when I do the valves. Interesting on the no-impact on the generator nut - I always found it useful because you don’t have to jam the screwdriver in somewhere to hold the rotation - but I never had anything go wrong with a generator or alternator due to an impact wrench - so I didn’t feel that pain to get me to stop…

    I would have changed the generator pulley also.

      Back to stock? Yeah good idea. I didn’t realize how crappy some of the aftermarket stuff is until it started failing on me…. I’ll probably wait and see a bit whether I have any more issues. Thanks for the feedback!
