1:14 You mean Db Dominant :)
Yessir!
Thanks for this Tony sir. Twenty years ago I bought a Dizzy Gillespie collectors box and now I'm actually playing A night in Tunisia myself.
You make it look so easy Tony! I'm just learning the chords to A Night In Tunisia and find your ideas very helpful. I can't implement them yet, since I'm a beginner pianist. Something to work towards. Thank you!
You probably can, not at the same speed. Everybody can do everything is all about doing it. Do back flips for a year, do piano for a year, do jiu jitsu for a year..
Sounds great by just using the A or B rootless voicings and tritone sub for the dominant 7th. after minor 7th. b5.
..."and some other crap" at 2:57...lol you crack me up! btw, love your videos. Thanks!!
Thanks for your videos. I'm growing musically.
Great lesson. Very inspiring. Brother, you swing.🎉
very good.....as a guitar player I appreciate your instruction
Great walk through of this great tune!
Tunisia is definitely going to be my next project now. I was trying to implement the Chico Marx move for some time in anything. 4:08
Thank you very much dear teacher !
I love your different chord s on a different Bass on RH!
Greetings from Jazznet Spandau!!!!!!2021
Well done. Thank you great instruction.
very good lesson, thank you.
Great lesson.. my next project .. love the Chico move lol.. could you possibly explain more deeply about the box chords? It’s the first time I have heard about them and they seem quite versatile .. thanks again ❤️🎹😊
excellent master!!!!
excellent tutorial
Love your best friend!!! Saw him at your feet.
Bruce Jeric Leo! He's 12 years old and a great friend
Awesome tutorial, Tony, thank you so much for posting it! I've been learning from it for a couple of months and have a lot of the song down. I'm just curious - are you using the sustain pedal at for in this song? It doesn't sound like it. If so in which parts and how?
I didn’t review the video to be sure but I don’t think I would use the pedal very much if at all.
@@TonyWinston Thanks for answering!
Hi Tony. Thank you so much for all your videos. It helps so so much. May I request a song unforgettable please?
Rexa Cute your wish is my command
Damn I really love your videos
Thanks, Excellent!
Thanks for amazing lesson, Tony! I really like how you change the melody on 10:46, could you elaborate how you come up with that, it sounds very nice but I’m not able to come up with such a smooth melodic phrase myself. What’s logic behind it melodically and rhythmically? Thanks!
That comes from experience. Lots of practice. There isnt any thought at this point, it just happens. But basically it does follow the scales of d minor melodic ascending and e flat lydian dominant
Yeeeah!
Grande Tino, anche tu lo seguì? È molto bravo!
Si, Simone, da poco. E' anche molto spiritoso, mi piace anche per questo
Complimenti !
3 years later I know 😅 but could someone please tell me what are those boxes he talkes about?
By the way my name is also Tony... Great video ✌🏻
About that minor 6 maj 7 chord, wouldn't that sound off if you're playing with a guitarist whos doing a regular Dm9?
21 21 yes it would sound wrong. Guitar and piano need to communicate or accidents abound.
THIS!
I always assumed the standard 6th degree in minor was a flat 6. Is the flat in the key signature mostly just for the right hand/melody usually? But the left hand/chords treat the home key as Dorian by default?
Minor keys have many quirks, they are definitely not as straightforward as major keys. I'll try to answer your question in a future video but the short answer is... the 6 and the 7 can be flat or not. Depends on what 'sounds right'
I have a question? What is your approach on improvising on altered notes/chords? (b9, #9, #11, etc.) What do you think exactly in terms of scales or best riffs that come across your mind? That is what throws me off during my solos.I see a Eb7#11 and I have to think more on what scale to use.
I love the fly!! When I see an altered tension like the ones you mention, I usually go to the altered scale ( a tough one to learn) or the appropriate diminished scale. However, The #11 usually wants the lydian dominant scale. For Eb7#11 try lyd.dom: Eb F G A Bb C Db Eb. You might know that scale as Bb minor melodic ascending. I will soon make a playlist - chord-scale theory - that will have videos on the subject.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, a video on b9, #11, b13 and what scales to use would be invaluable. I come from a classical school and we use different names ( octatonic scale is the same as diminished scale in jazz). I have to adapt to it ...
that is a cool trick indeed and easy to remember! Thanks.
What do you mean by box voicings? Are you talking about the seventh chord inversions?
No, I'm talking about a chord like F,A,B,E (from bottom to top) that can function as a 7th chord
G7 with a 9 and 13
So do they include rootless voicings? Also, what does "box 4" or "box 2" mean?
box 2 is the inversion of box 1 BEFA for example
@@TonyWinston I'm guessing box 4 is the inversion of box 3, box 3 being F,A,C#,E
what does it means box 4
Try this video ruclips.net/video/PoqrHSAq8mY/видео.html
It means this shape : F A C# E. This can be used as a Dmin-maj7 chord or a G7#11. The video I linked to explains the box voicings. /they are mostly rootless voicings
Hi Tony... I find that your videos don't have a good mix between your vocal and the piano. Love your teachings otherwise!
How u gonna give a tutorial for a song you don’t know how to play, or speak about?
Haha
Great
