Great interview! Finally somebody asked the question why do they call Russell the greatest winner and not the greatest player! If the object is to win championships he is the greatest of all time period! I keep hearing what Jordan or Kareem would do to him as if this is a game of one on one, it's not. He would do what he always did, find a way to win.... RIP Mr. Russell

He had to deal with Wilt so I'm not sure Jordan or Kareem are gonna do much more on him.

I was there for"Jerry West Night" at the Inglewood Forum in 1971, a ceremony prior to a Laker's game against the Phoenix Suns. West had suffered a season-ending injury earlier. Russell's appearance was something of a surprise given the intense rivalry between the two players, but the theater-like atmosphere of the arena made for a truly emotional evening 🏀

Same here. Still have the Jerry West Night Brochure. Wilt and subs lost to PHX, but Russell's speech was amazing.

We haven't forgotten Elgin Baylor, we remember and know they were amazing players. We remember Bill Russell as well, may he rest in peace.

What a profound thing to say to Jerry. "I just wanted you to be happy" It seems so contradictory since those Celtics teams never lost to the Lakers

I am a life-long LA Lakers fan going back to the 1960s. I saw him play on December 26, 1967 and saw him at Spring Hill College in January, 1972 when he was touring college campuses as a speaker. In the end he knew how to win. I always though he should be viewed as winning 11 championships in 12 years because the year the Celtics lost to the Hawks Russell was injured in that game. If Russell was healthy I believe the Celtics would have won all of the series against the Hawks.

Bill Russell did what most people could not do today at all - He led a team in an era where the norm was to be racist and discriminatory against colored players, and won championships and was a true outspoken man in face of racist losers, even fans of the team he played for. He took that pain and hostility and used it as fuel. He was incredibly strong and wise, and won 11 chips for a garbage ass racist city… That’s insane 😂

Russell averaged 15 points and 22.5 rebounds per game for his career. What's not calculated is shot blocks and shot changes. I think it would be adequate to suggest that in Russell's prime, he blocked 6 shots per game and changed 8--10. How many points is that worth? A minimum 30!

Bill Russell's 133 Defensive win shares are the most of any player all time and the distance between he and Tim Duncan who is 2nd all time in the same Stat is the same distance that separates Duncan from David Robinson in 10th on that same list. You're absolutely correct

@@dannyzep92 Shot blocks and intimidation i.e. forced missed shots are not calculated for Russell or Chamberlain.

Bill Russell changed the way the game was played. Coaches used to preach never leave your feet on defense. Russell was such a great athlete that he invented the blocked shot. And his defensive anchor was what allowed his teammates to run the vaunted Celtic fastbreak

Jerry sounds like he admires Elgin just as much as the Warriors teammates enjoy playing with Steph when he makes those crazy shots.
Sounds good to hear these old stories and how they overcame the horrible times or racism and the team players stuck together.

69 finals game seven was horrendous for Jerry west .Won the Mvp on the losing team .The balloons in the ceiling was stupid .West knew that was all Russell needed to give his team massive incentive .

Russell wasn't a great shooter. That's why every Russell championship was won without requiring a buzzer-beater. When it came down to the final minutes and seconds in all of his championships - all of them - Boston was always ahead. It was the other team trying to make the buzzer-beater, and none ever did.

    • @shubhamlele5395

Right. Thats why he needed to get to 10 Game 7s in 11 finals. Cause boston was always ahead.

These guys are struggling to say it so I guess I will...Russell was manipulated into sacrificing his game so some white boys could win championships in Boston and score most of the points. He was the Celtics version of Django's Stephen, and the NBA gave him MVP's in return to just shut up and rebound and pass the ball. Wilt refused to do this, he recognized quickly the league was institutionalized racist in the 50-60's, this started to change around for the better in the 70's, after the Civil Rights movement. You see it's funny to me because real racism was actually applied here, and no one talks about it. The bigger question is what would have happened if Russell refused, scored a bunch of points, and never passed, won 2 championships that way instead...Different story

From every interview I have ever heard Bill Russell give, he spoke of how he played the game "his" way. And his way was to win! He even went into how some of his earlier coaches tried to stop him from the way he played...that just wasn't how playing defense had always been done. But, Mr. Russell said that was what he found to work for him and he chose to play "his" way. It definitely worked for him and his teams.
He said he loved the Celtics...maybe not so much the fans, or people of Boston...but he loved his team and the people he worked with.
I just disagree with your opinion. The things you have said almost seem to be as if to dishonor him and that is sad. From all I have learned of Bill Russell, he was not one to be "manipulated." He stood against racism, so why would he give in on this one thing that meant so much to him? It just doesn't make sense. No, Bill Russell did not play like Wilt...and he beat Wilt, (and, as he said, he beat EVERYONE)...Because he did it "HIS" way.
Prayers for his family and may we all remember his joy filled laughter.

As a person of color, I’m disgusted and ashamed of your view on Bill Russell 💯 The man ensured more than you will ever have to, and he is the ultimate winner, I don’t get what you feel the need to say something so dumb 😂

You obviously haven't read or listened to Russell himself. You're so far off base you're not in the park, but stuck on a tractor in a ditch next to a corn field fifty miles from the stadium.
