What a joy to see this! Longest and one of the best interviews with Russell! He is very entertaining and that marvelous laugh is icing on the cake! Miss Charlie. Thanks utube.
The Wilt discussion is from 12:11 to 18:31. Russell mentions that he and Wilt had games with over 40 rebounds. Wilt did it 15 times and Russell 11 times. Russell had two games where he grabbed 49 rebounds in addition to the one game where he was over 50. The only other players to grab 40 rebounds are Nate Thurmond (42) and Jerry Lucas (40), and they did it once each. When Charlie asks Russell about Wilt grabbing 55 rebounds in a game, Russell says "and they won the game". But actually Wilt's team lost the game, and I would have expected Bill to know that. Wilt got his 55 rebounds against the Celtics on 11/24/60 but the Warriors lost to the Celtics, 132-129 as the Celtics outscored Philly by 7 in the 4th qtr. Wilt did not have a particularly good offensive game, shooting 15-42 (35.7%). In that game, Russell scored 18 and grabbed 19 boards. One amazing stat is that Russell only had one foul. That must have been very tough to do when guarding Wilt and Wilt taking 42 shots. Wilt's 55 rebounds were almost as many as the entire Boston team (59).
@@mahlonthomas1775 Wilts greatest idiosyncrasy was not fouling out. He had never fouled out of a high school, college or professional game and that was the one record he was determined to protect. I know what bill said. Wilt said the same about himself. Numbers count.NO ONE comes close to records Wilt holds. Yes Russell had more championships. Also had the better team most of the time. The Lakers with Wilt still holds the record for the most consecutive games, Won in a row. (33). Check there numbers Wilt would still dominate the game. Bill could not say that.At 50 Wilt was still getting offers to come back to play.
Russ and Wilt are the only two NBA players to AVERAGE over 22 rebounds per game for their career. The next highest is Bob Pettit with 16.2. They both grabbed nearly 40% more rebounds per game than any other player in league history.
At 27:30, Russell mentions that he did not win the Player of the Year award in his junior year, even though he believes he deserved it. Back then, the award was given out by UPI (a rival to AP). In the 1954-55 season (Bill's junior year), the award went to Tom Gola. Gola did have a remarkable 1954-55 season (his senior season) averaging 24.2ppg and 19.9rpg. Tom's LaSalle team lost to Russell's U of SF team 77-63 in the championship game. In that championship game, Russell had 23 points and 25 rebounds while Gola had 16 points and 19 rebounds. Gola went on to have a very good NBA career with the Warriors (playing with Wilt for a few seasons) and later with the Knicks. He was a 5 time All-Star. I can understand Russell's position that he should have won the award his junior year. He did ave 21.4 ppg and 20.5 rpg, and he did lead his team to a better record. USF was 28-1 that season. Interestingly, a similar thing happened to Wilt. In Wilt's soph season, where he clearly dominated college basketball, he came in second to Chet Forte of Columbia for Player of the Year. I think that was a more egregious selection. Chet did not even wind up playing in the NBA. He scored alot of points (slightly higher than Wilt), but then again he was playing for Columbia. And he certainly wasn't the all-around player that Wilt was (rebounds, blocked shots). Wilt's team just barely missed winning the championship in his soph year, when they lost to NC in triple O/T in the final. There is no doubt Wilt should have been player of the year.
