Really hard to say MJ is the goat after watching this. I just don't get how the current generation just strolls right past this man's career on that subject.
It's 100% understandable. One, most basketball fans today weren't born when Russell played or were too young to remember him. Two, the NBA only became popular in the 90s, largely thanks to MJ's marketing. Three, and most importantly, most fans gravitate to spectacular individual talent of MJ, fail to understand Russell greatness as a team leader that name his team better.
This video helped me develop a great respect and appreciation for Bill Russell. That said, his level of play doesn’t even come close to Jordan. When Russell played, there were only 8 teams in the NBA and most of the players/teams then weren’t as good as an average junior high team today, or even in the 90’s. Russell was dominate in his time and likely could have been good to great in any era, but Jordan was a far superior player. Secondly, in a smaller league, opponents get familiar with each other and understand how to play to beat their unbeatable challenger. At least they should. The best team doesn't stay the best team if someone is working to solve them and beat them next time. Russell faced off against opponents the likes MJ never faced, particularly Wilt Chaimberlain, a virtual super freak, boasting stats that would scare ypu silly. I don’t think any center today put fear into the other team quite like Bill, perhaps not even Wilt. People don’t realize Bill’s leadership and psychology made him a giant among giants. I don’t like them saying Wilt was selfish in this video, both were great.
In a Doc. I seen , Bill Russell and Wilt were Good Friends , from the Beginning , out of College , Fierce Competitors on the Court , but Good Friends off the Courts , they respected each Other and their Causes
18:42 they love to disrespect older players but how could the NBA not release footage like this?? They have to have more stuff like this in that vault of games they have. That was legit fluid and smooth as hell like a player today. Kinda looked like curry lmao. They played with different rules of dribbling back then too where the hand had to be on top of the ball when dribbling but he looked pretty good for those limiting rules.
Bill was brilliant 👏.....when i think of him ....i think a huge winner....looked how he blocked shots...to a team mate....long live the legend of the great bill Russell ....
i would allow him to get in a rythem he's comfortable in he may score 45 points, but if we play right we will win the game. That right there is what i was always taught about this rivalry growing up that wilt was obbsessed with his personal stats, and bill just wanted to win, and that bill would psychologically beat wilt, and play the game in a team oriented style that allowed him to beat wilt almost every single time.
Tuco The Rat wilt earned a reputation for fighting with teammates for not helping boost his stats. He was such a bad teammate, that he was traded. The players voted for mvp at the time and everyone in the league agreed Russell was better, which is why he won more mvps than wilt. 20 points and 30 rebounds will always be better than 35 points and 40 rebounds if you win. Bill Russell created an overpowered fast break offense and played to win. As for defense, he held your “supreme scorer” to not a single point in a half and destroyed him in defense in their finals matchups. Bill never lost a game 7 but wilt made sure to get his 40 points. Wilt is an amazing player and will never be forgotten. He was a player who gained a reputation for his obsession with stuffing the stat sheet and not winning. He bounced around the league and the players in the league saw bill was better because they voted him mvp. Also, the offense relied and was built around Bills supreme fast break outlet passing, his teammates didn’t win without him until they rebuilt and that took 10 years after he retired. Don’t try to use an uninformed opinion on something you are not informed about. Finally, basketball games are determined by if you win or lose. Bill won and Wilt lost.
@Tuco The Rat What bad teammates are you referring to? That team had West and Baylor and you're wrong, there were nights were Wilt was shutdown by Russell once only scoring 9 points snd Russell once had about 50 rebounds against Wilt, who else has done that? Props where props are due... you might be the fool
Wilt beat Russell in the head to head match up. The Celtics had the better teams. No mystery, no magic. Wilt was the better center. Celtics were the better team.
@@lurking0death Looking back, Wilt had five chances to knock Near ready to retire bill Russell out of the playoffs in ‘68 (3-1 lead ) and ‘69 (3-2 lead ) with a superior team-including two game 7s at home-and only needed to submit one monster performance to pull it off. Each time, he couldn’t do it .Each time , Russell’s inferior team prevailed. Each time wilt whines about it afterward. Well thought, articulate, sensible, logical, critical thinkers, self assured and masculine. I would say he's the epitome of a leader in basketball of his era.
Black men in the 60s & earlier had it tough with racist.. some of the toughest version of black men to ever exist grew up back then
Truly remarkable video here! Thank you so much & to Russ...thanks for the memories & the stories. Your loved Bill!!....always remember that!
The ultimate winner and truly a great man
1st player to repeat as NBA MVP
Forever, will be one of my favorite Basketball Player of all time. The 6th sense of Basketball, Bill Russell. Rest in Peace good sir. Goodbye MR.Russell, which I could've seen more of your plays or be on the same team as you in one of our lives.
Phil Jackson was asked which player he would start a team with. He didn't say Michael Jordan; he said Bill Russell.
Where did he sag that?
@@broadstreet21 In an interview which is on youtube.
@@MrAschiff I got to see it.
Jordan would probably agree.
@@MrAschiff ...Correct!
Wow! Much respect to Mr. Russell 😎 he's two generations before my time. I knew he had the most rings...but I didn't know he was such a GREAT MAN!
RIP Bill RUSSELL! 1934-2022.
AFTER VIEWING THIS DOCUMENTARY THE NBA LOGO SHOULD REALLY TRULY BE BILL RUSSELL.
NBA logo is perfect already

What a GREAT, GREAT man who stood up for his beliefs...
I watch him when I was a kid.he was just great.
Watching this video after this great man has passed away, the NBA,the U.S. and all the World lost a remarkable man.Rest In Paradise Bill Russell 🙏🙏🙏
When he said “ That’s what I do, but that’s not who I am” wow. That hit me big time
not a mention of his post season career as an analyst .....he was a great announcer , informative and funny
Heavy Gratitude.
Ps Peace to Elgin Baylor (best player to not win a ring) and Bill Russell (greatest champion, ever).
Pps Peace to Bill's older brother Charlie Russell (amazing writer)
What BR had to endure to ensure that he paved the road for generation after him!!
11 championships
8 straight NBA championships in a row
"8 straight + in a row" whaaat 🤷♂️😬
He won 2 more as a coach too.
I have a new respect for Mr. Russell. What an inspiring and amazing person who happened to play basketball really really well!
13 years 11 championship now i have never thought of anything like that.
May the great Bill Russell Rest In Peace.
Soo good, great man
Bill Russell was not only a great basketball player, but is a great human being.
Rest In Peace champ 🏆
Greatest winner in pro sports history. More rings than fingers.
Just an awesome human being. And clearly amazing parents.
Bill played under hostile conditions in Boston and across America. Scary places. The fans were evil in Boston and other cities.
They still are. Ask PK Subban and Kyrie Irving about that one.
@@RandyDubin totally agree with you and I’m from Boston
He had the best laugh 😃
❤️ bill russell; greatest basketball player ever
I developed the love for basketball from listening on the radio to USF games. I knew I would be lucky to even play high school basketball since I was not built for it. Bur the lessons Is got from the play of Bill Russell and K.C. Jones made me a success in later life. I still have the love of basketball and the descriptive radio narration made me aware of the patterns of life. Thank you, Mr. Russell for giving me the learnings of life.
I don’t think any center today put fear into the other team quite like Bill, perhaps not even Wilt. People don’t realize Bill’s leadership and psychology made him a giant among giants. I don’t like them saying Wilt was selfish in this video, both were great.
Unfortunately Wilt was selfish. Shaq definitely put the fear in teams during his peak years
@@vernonleewarren280 Shaq only put "fear" into big mean that were 1 dimensional and not all time greats
In a Doc. I seen , Bill Russell and Wilt were Good Friends , from the Beginning , out of College , Fierce Competitors on the Court , but Good Friends off the Courts , they respected each Other and their Causes
Notice when Russell talks of his achievements, it’s prefaced by “we” rather than “I” or “me.”
RIP BILL RUSSELL
18:42 they love to disrespect older players but how could the NBA not release footage like this?? They have to have more stuff like this in that vault of games they have. That was legit fluid and smooth as hell like a player today. Kinda looked like curry lmao.
They played with different rules of dribbling back then too where the hand had to be on top of the ball when dribbling but he looked pretty good for those limiting rules.
Fantastic way! Bill Russell is an inspiration for me.
@Tuco The Rat your a basketball know nothing read stats watch some highlights regurgitate talking points put out by the media
If Jerry west was MR clutch , than wilt was MR crutch
RIP The Great Bill Russell
Playing in a cess pool of hatred will make you bitter
thank you for standing up for what is good fair and right for all human beings
bill russell the greatest team player in NBA history
and even a greater human being
we love you bill russell
I wish someone would ask Bill about his infamous "Double-Triple-Double" game
Bill doesn't care about his stats so why ask him?
@@lukecash3500 its cool to hear stories about someone but better to hear stories from that someone imo but yea he prolly wouldnt give much even though some is plenty
I grew up a white young idiot in that era. What I DO remember is that I and a whole lot of my white friends in Toledo, Ohio thought that the
Celtics were a cut above and that Bill Russel was two cuts above. We weren't color blind but we weren't blind either. What black people need
to understand is that Bill Russell, Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Oscar Robinson....even militant Mohammad Ali had WHITE fans who at least understood
a little bit. White people who simply had a belief in merit and fair play for all men. There are a large number of white people who actually believe in
the equality of all races. And did back in 1958.
In my books, he is #10 among greatest NBA coaches all time. Only top ten player AND coach.
R.I.P. ✌🏽 THE EXTRAORDINARY & LEGENDARY BILL RU$$ELL.. WARRIOR 🤴🏽
