It’s an old school belief that your bird will be tamer if it is clipped. The rescue organization that we got our parrotlet from had an older woman who insisted we “needed” to clip the bird in order to make him dependent on us and easier to train. Younger members of the rescue organization told us that’s not correct. But, weirdly, nobody stopped her from continuing to give out this bad information. It’s weird how people just keep repeating this same terrible old school training belief.

a mild clip can do wonders for socialization for people who have no clue on what a bird is and still get one
BUT, notice I said a MILD clip, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS AFTER the bird has learned how to fly.
I do mild clips (2-4 feathers on both wings) on all my lovies, mostly for safety reasons, but they can still fully fly around the house. they just can't fly away for literal miles in case of an escape. and yes, we're also working on recall training. because shit happens and the only real thing you can do is be prepared.

Aside from completely outcasting them and/or targetting to expose and ruin their businesses or forcing them to change their practice, there's not much we can do. And getting stubborn people to see the error of their ways is like trying to talk sense into a stupid person. They'll always make excuses for their behavior. They're professional bsers and self-enablers because that's what they've been training for for as long as they can remember, and we just can't talk sense into (most of) them because we have not and instead know how to self-reflect and be aware and empathetic.

I get a lot of flack from other breeders in my state because I fight for flight. I refuse to clip the babies wings and instead work on recall training from the day they start to fly. It’s so important that they use those muscles and gain the confidence. But I know others who will clip them BEFORE they ever take that first baby flutter and that horrifies me. We also wean onto pellets and chop and I try to do all the right things to set our birds up for successful lives. I don’t cut corners to make more profit none of that. Our birds have toys and enrichment. Many other breeders have tried to tell me not to give the breeder birds toys, which is awful. Most of my breeder birds are still tame and are our pets first. Many breeders swear to me that tame birds won’t breed. But mine do, I don’t force them or over breed them. And because of my ethics many local breeders do their best to stir drama with me 🤷🏻‍♀️ sucks to suck thought for them 😂

If this breeder(or broker?) is doing this same thing to all their birds I hope someone will stage some kind of intervention for the welfare of the birds in their care. I know that wild bird rescue reconstruct missing/broken feathers, if there is not too much of them, especially on birds of prey! They are very sensitive to any missing feather, it's the key of successful hunt. So you either have to wait the molt happens once a year, or you reconstruct the missing feather and let the recovered bird free. It's pretty cool. They save the feathers for these cases. Hovewer most of the time they have to keep bird for the next few month/half year to wait their new feathers to come.
I hate when they clip wings on parrots. It's not common in a place I live, a little good point. The bad points are the amount of illnesses most of the breeders have and don't care. Feather and beak deasease, megabacteria, and even ornitosis is not rare to get if you buy a bird :C as I noticed, in some american petshops thwy always do this, it's horrible D: if the illnesses are also very common as here, you buy a really poor, ill and bad immune system bird, very sad >

My kids bought a Sunday Conure that was supposed to be fully flighted and when we were 5 minutes away on a 4 hour drive he clipped the wings and gave her to us. The poor baby realized she couldn't fly once we had her. Her wings were cut to so short it caused her pain. We called 5 avian vets and all said she was too young to put her under for an imping procedure. She also was supposed to be a DNA tested male as I have a very hormonal Goffin's Cockatoo. So I then had a baby bird with PTSD and a hormonal aggressive Cockatoo who attacked me. I don't regret taking her away from that situation but I wish none of us had to go through that. She is now one yo and fully flighted but has regressed so much she is acting like a hatchling doing that behavior as though this last year never happened. Once the switch flipped in her mind and she realized she could fly like before she went back to all the behaviors of that 8 week old baby bird. I tell you all this so breeders might see this and know that clipping wings effects more than their ability to fly. It effects their mental health, their balance and their relationships with their humans and other birds.

Since they were babies we let there wings grow naturally but they never grasped the concept of what glass is and they kept flying full speed into it. I would like to make clear I do not clip the whole wing I only shorten two feathers on each side so that they can’t gain as much speed. Sorry but I'd be name and shaming that breeder into the ground if I was the owner. I get it doesn't "help" the situation but no breeder that cares for their animals should clip THAT bad (I'm extremely against clipping as it is but I show bare minimum leniency towards it even though I despise it). Not only do you hinder the bird and affect them early on but you also cause them to be easy prey for predators. Also their born to fly, no breeder should be doing that to their animals, that is disgusting. Plus that breeder has fractured the trust of the breeder / owner relationship, instead of them reaching out to you for help, they will never go near you again. Your role as the breeder is not only to breed but educate and assist where you can, help make the transition easier not destroy that bird and the trust of the owner. I wouldn't be trusting that "breeder" around any animal, period.
Amazing to see the beautiful bird slowly recovering though, I wish them all the best.

@@maryhartsock7792 There's a reason why Free flight training is 5 months or more, It is training to get them used to distractions, enjoy the world and yes some times they do get spooked / fly off, thats what the trackers are for and some times eagles ect will go after them. It's about knowing the location, evaluating if there are risks (you will arrive and look into the location for at least 20-30 minutes for warning signs)- if you're uncomfortable, ask if your local sport club ect if you can borrow their gyms / bating cages - these are enclosed.
In regards to ceiling fans, common sense must be used when owning ANY pet, Negligence can be seen as abuse within reason, Accidents do happen - wing mutilation is not an 'Accident' it is intentional. A ceiling fan killing the bird is a different scenario to wings being mutilated. Unfortunately in terms on animal abuse this isnt seen as an offense but should be, it severely hinders the animal. Also dont get a flying animal if you're going to ruin its ability to fly.

I saw a comment that some wing clipping is used to help new owners who are in the dark about birds. Maybe a better concept is get trained before you buy one of these birds. Breeders should not be selling these birds to the inexperienced. Breeders have a responsibility. Personally it should be illegal to breed these types of parrots. Leave them in the wild to be free.
