Bringing home Delphi the Green Cheek Conure - First Month

  • This is the first month of the journey of Delphi the Green Cheek Conure. Memorable moments put together that I like to look back to and I hope that you can enjoy :)
I am a new bird owner and did hours, days and weeks of research beforehand because I wanted to know what I was getting myself into. I've wanted a green cheek for years. But each bird is really different and there are a lot of things the internet cannot prepaire you for. I have learned so much from the past few months in a positive and negative way.
I'm really sorry if I do things wrong in your eyes in the video's. I only tried to do well... I donnot have any intention of offending anyone or anyting.
(If this video makes you have questions about me taking her outside, or the seeds Delphi was eating (her diet in general) or why I took her home at such a young age. I recommend watching my video called “get to know the birds!” Where I shed a lot more light on these subjects. Feel free to watch, don’t feel obligated ☺️)
(Aaaaand the music is a bit mixed up at one point because I got a claim about it and had to fix it but that was not easy at all. I tried my best but it just sounds... well... not logical or something at one point, so I'm sorry for that...)

@@maddoxio yes its important to train them that your the safe place, I also have my burd to take a spot..its the next step from getting them to fly to a perch..its not just about them feeling safe at that point it's also them trusting your judgement..so if someone comes along with a huge dog..I'm 5 foot nothing..I was worried that a gog might be able to reach my bird on my shoulder so now I can tel him to fly to that roof and he will ..and sit there till i say he can move..I just feel safer been able to get him up out of the way,..the training is fun..I come across lots of situations and things I can use in his training that I can improvise to create a situation..by bird has gotten so good in the sky so fast..its amazing..I'd make a good macaw mammy ..

Thank you, Julia, for being such a kind, loving person. You are a really good mom!❤🦜❤🦜❤
I found a a bird that looks just like yours five days ago on the street. He didn't bite me when I picked him up. I am not sure what happened to him; but I took him to a Vet, they only cared for dogs and cats... I did get a water dropper from them. I gave the bird some water, and he it, slowly at first, then he drank a good amount. I bought him a big bird cage, toys, food, and made chop for him (for the days he was here) with seed sprinkled in... He would fly around the house, and he would sit on me and fly on my head first day, then he started getting kinda wild: the more I let him fly around freely: the more he didn't want me putting him back in the cage. He would sit on the mini blinds in the kitchen and stare outside so intently. I didn't want us to get too attached, because I knew I was going to set him free in my neighborhood; where there's a lot of these birds around. I couldn't stand the thought of him trapped in a cage, but he only slept in it; while he was here.
I saw he was strong and a very good flyer, and he was SO smart, so I felt he would be a-ok! When I took him outside, and I put him on the palm of my hand, he stayed and just looked at me, like he was saying, thank you. He stayed for a couple of minutes until I said, go Micah, your free. Tears rolling down my face he looked at me, and he turn and flew away. He found his new family with in 10 minutes. I was SO HAPPY he was accepted, but so sad because I loved him already. God's beautiful creation is truly AMAZING. I felt sad and happy watching this video, so sweet. Thank you! 💕

Sooo *cuuuuuuute!* My mother recently got two birds (budgies) to keep her company during the pandemic, and it's been interesting to see their personalities develop the same way Delphi's has started to appear.
[Edit] So I just watched your other video, and I'm commenting here, since Comments were disabled over there. While I'm sad that you had to give Delphi away, I'm also really proud of you for doing the right thing for her. Your little friend needed another friend of her own, and you did what was best for her, even if it hurt. If people are spamming you with hate for that - which is the impression I got from the Description text - don't listen to them. Besides, little Sami seems like he's growing up fast! You'll have another sidekick in no time!

You guys really take good care with her so she would be comfortable with you, get stronger and healthier. So sweet to see her interacting. loved see her bathe and sleep on her back. And snuggle under your hair.
It can be very scary outside. A friend lost one of hers in a split second right in front of her… hawk swooped in and got it. She saw the shadow,, looked up to see what it was. And it was just there, it’s wings brushed her. It carried her precious baby off to group of trees. But then she could hear her screaming as she was eaten and then it got quiet. She had already headed down to where she thought it flew toward hoping it dropped her as the birds were chasing it out of a grove of trees but only found part of her and some feathers. Poor thing - she cried for days over that poor baby, cried for a year or more every-time she thought of her. It was her first one. She and her husband have passed away now - but they sure loved their parrots and orchids. They were so helpful and pleasant, were of service to any and all of those who needed it. Just lovely people. If we had more like them, the world would be so much nicer.
As soon as this happened, they almost immediately built an outside aviary. 20’ tall, 40’ long and 20’ wide. They wanted it large enough for their big parrots. good thing they had around plenty of land. They had the contractor sink concrete about 18” down completely around the aviary inside and outside so as to prevent something digging under and then put 2 separated layers of screening on the inside and outside of the chain link and then put welded wire on inside of that. They didn’t want to worry about leaving them outside if they weren’t there.
Those birds were so funny, you could just open the cages and they would hop to a board and they all just waddled “down the lane” - looked like an assembly line, hopped over a little ledge at the large window, down the ramp or flew to wherever they wanted to go. Could close the screen door or window, and they trained themselves so when they wanted in, they hung on the door or window into the greenhouse which gave them entrance to the living room or the large, sunny, “inside bird room” and they had small diameter welded wire too so they could hold on easily and between the three chime areas, the little piece of hanging pipe and a rope and “shook” the different wind chimes and bells to inform you it was time for you to play with them. And if you ignored them, they just got louder, and louder, more screaming etc. Their next door neighbor would call and say laughingly - “do I need to call the authorities and report you guys for neglecting those poor birds? 🫣🤣could really make those long wind chimes make quite the statement! Between the chimes and the birds, they could make some noise. It wasn’t always that they wanted to play with the humans; occasionally something scared them - cats, foxes, coyote, or a hawk flying over, large flocks of other birds would really get them jacked out of shape. One time it was a alligator! And early on, another critter got one which was why there were so many layers of screens. A black snake got in and was curled up in one of their shade and resting boxes. Talk about a commotion she said, but the darn thing got hold of small young bird and she couldn’t get up to it in time. The large parrots she said tried to protect the bird, flapping and pecking at it which really made rescuing it difficult. Finally her husband got to it by the tail and got it out but the poor little parrot was gone. Immediate construction started again and they couldn’t go out until it was made safer.
They built a smaller connecting one for the smaller birds next. And then they built another much larger one that connected between the house and the original aviary. It included and opened from their orchid greenhouse. That way they could open and close off depending on the weather. After that, it was better and no more killed birds but they did do another layer of a heavier screening on everything thing, even into the house and greenhouse was so scared a smaller snake might sneak in.
Even with the sadness, it was so pretty to see those gorgeous parrots flying and waddling around in amongst the orchids and it all surrounded with roses, shrubbery, vines, etc. It started with putting the flowers, vines, shrubs etc on the outside on different structures back off the aviary was so to not have any reflections they might fly into. Then they wanted vines with berries, seeds, fruits etc to nibble on. More like nature. They had several fountains they sounded great and several were so they could splash around and bathe. it was the nicest I had ever seen - greenhouse, landscape, house, aviary, zoo - whatever you wanted to call it. And all those birds loved them to pieces.
It would be so funny sometimes, to look up and see them hanging on the big sliders into the house - just watching, not making a peep, just looking at whoever was inside and what they were doing. Then one would start a low chatter and in seconds, it was like holy terror broke out all at once. They opened the door and they would just waddle in, one by one. Hilarious!
And they sorta talked as they waddled in, just low and happy. Some went to the kitchen to get veggie treats, some to their cages to just rest I guess. Some went to the living room, got up on her husband’s shoulder, a couple snuggled where they could, climbed in the blankets. some just wherever they could see the tv. One that had quite a character, full of personality and didn’t like everyone- it would go get in it’s cage and halfway pulled her cover down over the door so it would be dark. If it fell to the floor, oh my gosh, you would think something killed it. Someone would have to go in and not only attach the cover over the cage, but also adjust her inside little cotton bag so she could nest inside it. It was like you would start to walk out and she would squark until you finished your job. 🤣
Obviously, they had the wherewithal to afford all this and the caretaker to help. I don’t even know how many birds they had - it was a lot and most rescued babies. They did have a pair that every couple of years would have babies but then they just quit. Maybe they got older?? All their birds were very healthy, beautiful feathers, no bare spots. when it was time to lose their feathers, can’t think of it right now but they fed extra mashed boiled eggs more nuts, etc to make sure they had plenty of protein along with their regular high quality food and supplement. They made sure their nails were kept clipped so no pain or walking poorly, kept the cages clean. Had a large cage with a sand box in it so they could do dust bathes if they wanted. Out in aviary, they had fountains to bath in and I forgot the shower. one of the fountains was like a rain shower in our bathes but had those jets on the wall and they loved to fly through them especially the big birds. They had branches across here and there so they could rest on them and preen and sqooch down to the end so they could get right under the water to get drenched. What a hoot they were. And jealous darlings a couple could be.

Delphi looks almost exactly like my conure Popo. Not sure if he is a Mr. Or Mrs.... I rescued Popo from a pet store. Where he/she stayed in a small cage at the back of the store. Most of his/her time there. The first night bringing Popo home. He/she just wouldnt stop crying everytime we put em in the cage that night and tried turning the light off for bed... We ended up having Popo do a cuddle sesh with us in the bed for 2 to 3 hours. We were able to get Popo to stay happily in his/her cage after that.... I absolutely adore my babies (birbs) Beautiful video

It's funny how when you get a bird it's basically your child. I have a Cockatiel named Charlie and he spends all day with me, except for when I'm outside.

Just FYI You have done a great job with Delphi. it shows you spend TONS of time with her. just the fact you have her flight trained, and that she lets you pet her while "asleep" shows it. a very well cared for and happy bird. ~Source~ my parents are Conure breeders we hand-feed a bunch of these little guys.

She's so adorable. This is the second time hearing about a green cheek conjure parrot I seen today I watch another channel before this. I love hearing about different parrots. After all, I seen a lot at the zoo and on RUclips. You learn something new everyday.

So beautiful!!! Green Cheeks are the best!!! And you have a yellow sided one at that. Well done to get Delphi at such a young age and to hand feed and teach to fly to you. Make sure you talk often to her in repeated phrases. Mine, Rascal, now says "Good Baby", "You're so Cute", "You're Sweet", "Yada, Yada, Yada", and then she also sweet talks to me, babbling in my ear, when sitting on my shoulder. And I babble back; she loves it.

I have 2 conures, a rose crown and a touquoise cornure named skittles and kiwi, kiwi was raised poorly and just fir money, He didnt even know how to fly, and everytime we'd go near him, or get him to step up on our finger, hed squawk loudly, After a couple months, he is so happy living with us, so social, can speak, play and interact with toys, even pillows..loves em, thats my experience with teaching a bird flight, love and attention

Had one of them once. He was such a hyperactive little guy, couldn't sit still for a moment.
Had to give him up because I couldn't afford him anymore after a series of unfortunate circumstances took place, but I hope he's having as much fun as Delphi is.
