Lyrics:
Happy came to visit me, he bought cookies on the way
I poured him tea and he told me it'll all be okay
Well I told him I'd do anything to have him stay with me
So he laid me down, and I felt Happy come inside of me
He laid me down, and I felt happy
Oh if you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
I was in the bathroom, I didn't hear him leave
I locked the door behind him and I turned around to see
All the cookie wrappers and the empty cups of tea
Well I sighed and mumbled to myself again, I have to clean
I sighed and mumbled to myself
If you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
And if you're going, take the moon
Then maybe I will see you, in the night I'll see you
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you

I just thought of something. at 1:54 when we see the smoke in the room, my first thought was that it was incense and that she was trying to clear the negative energy in the room. This is an Asian tradition. However, when it zooms out, it shows that it's a cigarette. This is an Americanized, self-destructive way to cope that pollutes the room instead of fixing anything. maybe I'm reading too much into it but I'm asian american like mitski and I haven't seen anyone else say this yet
Damn that’s such a cool thing to think about, wish it the comment gets for looks
Makes sense, but China and Japan smoke cigarettes much more than Americans
this is actually a great comment, thanks for sharing
@@TheRobodog They do now, but it was originally a Euro / American thing that was popularised in East Asia, and now more people smoke in East Asia because everyone wanted to act American soooo bad. (Tobacco was originally, and still is, a sacred ceremonial herb used by the indigenous cultures of North America, which was mis-appropriated by colonialist upper-class Europeans for recreational purposes, and then pumped so full of toxic chemicals that made them extremely addictive and carcinogenic, and then popularised all over the world through imperialism and capitalism.)

Amongst many other things, i also interpret this one thing. Her being asian-american kinda protected her from not being killed by the killer, until she saw him at least. Imagine if she never found out. Her not fitting into the beauty norm, so ugly in the eyes of the killer, protected her. I think this puts the whole song into a sort of ironic light, because thats how she got happy in the first place... from being quote on quote ugly. I just cant describe how much i love mitski and her music.
So why he would marry to an asian woman? No, I think he really is a psycho but he is a weirdo who love his woman and instead of buying expensive thing, he kills woman to her
@@ferencssalvoski3721 If he loved her he would not try to kill her in the end. In the eyes of that white man the asian wife viewed herself as ugly, inferior. The white man had his wife as a cover up as she would not leave, since she viewed herself as inferior and thought she would be unable to find another love. He married her for A. Cover up his murders B. Have a reason to unsuspiciously store all the jewelry.
i don't think he found her ugly necessarily. he just used her as a cover up because he thought she was either too insecure to leave, she didn't have the funds to leave, or she didn't have family or friends to run off to in that country if she were an immigrant. my filipino grandmother married my white american soldier grandfather post-WW2, and she's confided in me with the extreme loneliness she felt coming to this country when she was a 19 year old without any family or friends close by. because she didn't have any agency, it made her not want to leave even though she was unhappy (not due to abuse or even racism from my grandfather, but because she was too young when she got married and didn't know what she wanted). i can assume that was probably a common experience.
She was searching for happiness in an opressive environment, like a lot of women, we struggle to fit in something we should be aspiring to be free of...
This reminds me of how Ted Bundy only killed women with long brown hair, and apparently someone he was planning to kill got a haircut that week so he let her out of the car..

I made a small connection?? the embroidery on the purse says "for my blue eyed cookie" and the lyrics go "I turned around to see, all the cookie wrappers..." the bodies of the girls he killed?
actually, and sorry to sound like a smart ass, both the songs lyrics and the video itself are metaphors for all the broken hearts and relationships that racial and sexsit expectation bring
"cookie wrappers" can be seen as all the broken hearts left behind by the very high social expectations held on euro women and women in general
the video used this metaphor for women by making the girl in this a "cookie wrapper" as well and her getting murdered in the end is just symbolism for another relationship high expectations killed
@@ginnmann In my humble opinion the cookie wrapper is just the cookie wrapper from the cookies he brought

Maybe this allegory is trying to ambiguously explore the mentality of a person who would cheat: what their motivations are. It's not love. His adultery is painted as a killing act: a desire to control, and penultimately hurt these women, and eventually Mitski (when she finally confronts the truth of his motivations i.e. not because she wasn't beautiful or worthy of love; but because he's a killer.
) His desire to be devious, or feel devious in love manifests a clear line between good and evil in the narrative, when in reality; it's much harder for people in love to sever themselves from harmful and subtly abusive partners. What an empowering reminder.
Best twist ending for a 2016 music video

Yaaassss
the parallels between the shattered glass and the shattered tea cup! and the tripping bc of something very feminine and inconvient! the tripping with tea and after she sees the body
Wow the video is wow
as an asian american woman myself, i have to say this video nailed the message about race and beauty... especially at 1:52 when you see the white woman's profile and then the asian woman's and you can feel the inadequacy in how alien you seem to look in a white society. and of course this setup doesn't end well for the white women either. even if they look ideal at first because they have the whiteness you'll never have, they're trapped in the same system and even they will never be enough to satisfy men's expectations
So well-said.
most men who are connected to reality will prefer a toltec queen although i am aware and respect the japanese veneration for the white ivory look..but I would happier with a woman who was more connected their meso - american roots....white society is a fading state of mind
Whites and Asians are pretty... but when they mix with Latinas is like "OMG ITS AN ANGEL"... maybe I think so cause I'm also latino but I find race mix so amazingly beautiful
@@EsDoncor ..true but raza and asian people come from cultures so much older ,sophisticated and culturally adept than europeans that we should need to recognize these existing stereotypes or feel bound by them...multi culturalism is beautiful and so are people from different cultures finding love but at the same time we shouldnt blindly follow the stereotypes by a group of people who only just started bathing over 100 years ago ,they should be the last to be trying to create stereotypes of what is beautiful and acceptable
@@feereel As a man totally unconnected to reality (white), I can say the discussion is merely pecking order nonsense at root. Attractive women come from every "background." The issue (as Half Bee put it) is a warped system, where women are regarded as consumables - and men as well, I might add. This sort of system seems to go on in most of the world

why do people in the comments get so bitchy when woc interpret this mv in a specific way
Becuase racial comments make people upset, we like to just ignore that and live at peace. It was Morgan Freeman that said, in response to "How do we stop racism"
"We stop talking about race"
Not liking for a woman for her race is just as trivial as not liking her for not having eyes that you like or hair that's a fun texture or a culture you are interested in. When we stop alienating these people we van accept them for them. Imagine alienating people for having blond hair, and blonds screaming about how horrible that they arent being accepted, if we stop making it this huge deal I think people will find that there are always "exceptions to the rule". There will always be people interested in one another for whatever reason. Makes me sad that when we reflect on these issues people get aggressive, it's like picking at an open sore. Just let the sucker heal already.

It's got all the trappings of a great Park Chan Wok movie+Mitski.
the part where she looks up at the mirror to check if she has blue eyes made me sob so hard omg
Nah cuz as a mixed japanese chick this song hits so hard for me. Growing up especially in my younger years I compared myself to my white peers and felt as if I looked different in a negative light. Soon enough though my features became more appreciated and I've learned to love myself. What melts my heart is that my boyfriend loves the shape of my nose. I've always hated it, it holds a high-nose bridge and looks like a beak, yet he says it's one of his favourite features about me.
Happy came to visit me, he bought cookies on the way
I poured him tea and he told me it'll all be okay
Well I told him I'd do anything to have him stay with me
So he laid me down, and I felt happy, come inside of me
He laid me down, and I felt happy
Oh if you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
I was in the bathroom, I didn't hear him leave
I locked the door behind him and I turned around to see
All the cookie wrappers and the empty cups of tea
Well I sighed and mumbled to myself again, I have to clean
I sighed and mumbled to myself
If you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
And if you're going, take the moon
Then maybe I will see you, in the night I'll see you
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
why
Thank you
you like killing stalking ??
@@tasmiajahan5904 I think I've heard about it a while ago. What's it's about?
@@SuAANlian it's a story about serial killer and a stalker.&the story's kinda cool.
So far i've noticed Citizen Kane, In The Mood For Love and Vertigo references. Can someone help me identify other movie references ? This video is so esthetically pleasing
It's mostly Douglas Sirk - All That Heaven Allows or Magnificent Obsession but there's a definite Wong Kar Wai vibe too. Or postmodern films that play with Sirk's style like Todd Haynes's Far From Heaven. The end is very Hitchcock though definitely - I'd say more Psycho than Vertigo.
+Mk Mnn Hitchock's references are multiple I guess. I also thought about Tippi Hedren outfit in The Bird
+Mathilde
ha, I thought the "in the mood for love/2046" similarity was in my mind.
oh... and of course that looks a lot like patrick bateman going american psycho at the end
+Mathilde lust/caution too with the jewelry and gifts and in the realm of the senses with the assault
+Derek Holmes oh yes ofc ! american psycho :$
wow that took an unexpected turn.
can't wait for the album to drop.
" WHEN YOU GO AND TAKE THIS HEART I'LL MAE NO MORE USE OF IT WHEN THERE'S NO MORE YOU" was personal :'(
i'll never forget how my jaw dropped when i first saw this
Get this nostalgia like experiencing Actor/Strange Mercy era St. Vincent again for the first time. Fantastic.
I found this song on a st. vincent radio :D
I love this song so much oml
RIGHT?
i love how the start is actually the end and the end is the start to the first end so bassicly the end is before the start wich is just a great detail
i love how perfectly it loops and you can see the blood on her braclete god mitski is amazing
3:18 is literally stuck in my head and i cant get over it.
I can't even put how much I love this song and video into words
"Oh if you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you"
Well that escalated quickly.
Omg
Her music videos are literally movies
I still believe this is one of the most heartbreaking songs from Mitski
OMG THE PLOT TWIST ITS SO AMAZING
this music video is a whole movie
this is THE BEST movie I´ve ever seen.
That was the best horror movie i've ever seen
My first mitski song and it’s been 7 years since
That twist at the end came so completely out of left field. Holy shit. Mitski, the mad lass, really did that
can't believe mitski invented happiness just for this song omg
This was better then any movie ive ever seen
MITSKI I NEED A PART 2
This gave me "In the Mood for Love" vibes. Well, except for the end.
i would give anything to watch this for the first time again
when i go to hell i will find that white man who broke mitskis heart
jin made such a good role playing them
Who's jin
