Great story. Sometimes just the simple pleasure of “unwinding” is priceless.
My first weekend leave and I had to be on 2pm train on a Sunday to make curfew.
All my buddies are going to the beach for a BBQ and I’m sat on a train for 4 hours with another hour across the city to our camp
All worth it in the end!!

I really like these stories , when you look back on your time there I see smiles and some reflection back on all you went through just to get there. Keep up the stories. Liberty call, Liberty Call, Liberty to commence at 1700 hours for duty sections 1,3, and 4 and to expire onboard at 0730...now liberty call.
We can all handle pressure… yes, it comes in varying degrees, varying times, etc. but, sustained is a whole other beast.
These FFL guys know when they need to release the pressure valve and you were the recipient of this timely gift.
Glad you got to experience some of France’s beautiful villages… I miss those cobblestones of Europe, especially my own home town.
You do not want to dwell on the past. However, reflection is always positive. 100%

"Liberty call ! " My favorite sound while in the Navy. The random drug test reminds me of coming back aboard ship around 0700 while in Yokosuka Japan in 1975 after drinking all night and being told on the quarterdeck to "roll the dice"....hit the lucky number and you get strip searched. I threw the dice over the side. The OOD Chief, who didn't like me to begin with smiled and says "Gotcha....ID card and liberty card". Somehow the Command Duty Officer let me off the hook and I thought the Chief would have a goddamn stroke. LOL I was actually a squared away sailor and I guess that played into the CDOs decision, he told me to go below and avoid the Chief for awhile LOL Thank you Sir LOL

T/Cav.. My roommate in 1983-84/85 was a Korean. Just So you know I’m legit his name was Lee Min Soo in America we say Min Soo Lee but as you probably know they use lasts first. He also sat on my knee when we drank heavily in the barracks and new people would see us and whisper “Are those 2 Gay? WTF is going in here?” Not knowing when certain Asian men do that in a bar you better tip toe around them. They will literally kill for each other. It means that person is telling those in the room. This guy is my brother! Fck with him and you get me too. And Lee whooped a guys ass from one side of a room to the other so no one fckd with Lee or another guy in our platoon from Georgia Kenny Padget. Padget beat a guy from our barracks building all the way to the company commanders office leaving a blood trail all the way there. He got the guy to confess he stole 500$ out of his wall locker while he showered. And 2 other guys got given up too. So our platoon was known you don’t fck with the guys in C-Co 4th platoon. Our first platoon sergeant was 6’6” 290 lbs our second would bust him in 2 pieces. He was a Samoan who benched 600 lbs no problem. Fatelli Fatelli was his name. He hated my guts but Padget was his boy and stuck up for me. And one day he had us over to a cookout with his wife and 3 boys and I got my burger and fries loaded them with ketchup and proceeded to flip over in his rocker recliner I had no idea was either. His kids loved it. They laughed at me for a solid hour till Fatelli whooped one of them. His wife came out and saw what all the commotion was and she laughed too. Me covered in fries catchup and a burger and bun. Lee had a field day. It was the ultimate ice breaker. Fatelli loved me like a dad after that. But Lee was my best friend. I learned a sht ton about Korea and Korean culture those long cold days & nights taking to him. One time we went to Frankfurt to get away for the weekend and he met a Korean couple on the streetcar. He spoke proto English and said to me. Do you want to go to whore house? I look over and this Korean couple are staring at me not blinking. I was like; “ WTF Lee ya kind of got me on the spot here I’m kinda embarrassed” Thinking this couple were into swinging or some crazy Korean culture sht he did not school me up on. I said yea whatever dude. We get to their apartment and I realize he said DO YOU WANT TO GO TO HER HOUSE. Not fckn WHORE house like he pronounced it in his terrible English. So I tell him this and he fckn goes into a fit of laughter crying he laughed so fckn loud. He’s holding his gut trying to tell them what just transpired between us because they speak ZERO English and I realize he’s telling them what I thought he said and I beg him “No Lee! Don’t tell her that you fckn asshole!” He did anyway and those mthrfckrs start crying too. I felt like the biggest asshole in the world. They were in the local Symphony and she was the violinist and he was the cello player. Super nice cultured couple now horrified by my initial confusion due to that fckr’s bad translation of the word “HER”
