  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A DS 9 FROM OSV - bit.ly/3w9qQvS
French maker DS is these days part of the 'premium pool' of Stellantis Group brands, along with Alfa Romeo and Lancia. Which means it must have a proper large sector premium product - and this is it, the DS 9. It's sized in between the mid-sized and large executive saloons you might be thinking of and claims to be a true successor to innovative Gallic luxury saloons of the past. There's proof of proper premium brand status here.

    Background
Back in the Sixties, 'DS' stood for executive sector luxury with a then-Citroen-badged model featuring avant garde looks and cutting-edge technology. More than half a century later, there is at last a true successor to that car in this model, the DS 9. DS is, these days, a brand in its own right and its products borrow heavily from technology already used in existing Peugeot and Citroen products, but there's unique innovation too in justification of the historical parallels here.
The whole point of forming the DS brand in the first place was to give what used to be called the PSA Group (now Stellantis) the chance to build and sell larger full-executive models that these days, people simply wouldn't choose if they had Peugeot or Citroen badges. This car's importance right now lies not in sales numbers - this model will be a rare sight on our roads - but in the credibility it should give DS as a proper premium brand, rather than a purveyor of tarted-up versions of volume models. So, expectations here are high. Can this car meet them?
    Driving Experience
Lots about this DS 9 feels quite unique, but that doesn't apply to the powertrain offering, which is lifted straight from this car's Peugeot 508 cousin. From launch, DS did offer an un-electrified 'PureTech 225' model, but it isn't expected to be available for long. Nor is the front-driven 'E-TENSE 225' plug-in model we chose for our test; this uses an 11.9kWh battery and will shortly make way for an 'E-TENSE 250' derivative with a battery enlarged to 15.6kWh in size. We'll quote the performance figures for that; rest to 62mph in 8.1s and a maximum speed of 149mph - or 84mph in full-electric drive.
Your other DS 9 option is the flagship 'E-TENSE 4x4 360' model, which gets an extra motor on the rear axle, creating an All-Wheel Drive powertrain - and a more powerful one. That extra motor, along with an upgrade in tuning for the 1.6-litre engine to 200hp, delivers an output boosted to 355hp. This lowers the rest to 62mph time to just 5.6s en route to a top speed of 155mph, but the usual 38 mile DS 9 driving range figure is unaffected.
Whatever variant in the range you choose, there's the usual PSA Group EAT8 8-speed transmission. And there are things you might really like. Refinement, aided by the acoustic glass, is class-leading - really silent, which is a good start. Ride quality is also brilliantly judged, supple without being wafty. And that's in a test car lacking the clever 'DS Active Scan' suspension, which uses a forward-facing camera to prepare the dampers for forthcoming bumps. This is in short, a full-sized Executive saloon with a very Different Spirit.
    Design and Build
Though this DS 9 will most directly compete with cars like Audi's A4 and BMW's 3 Series, it's a little larger than saloons of that kind, being 4.93m long and 1.85m wide. It sits on the same stretched version of the EMP2 platform used by the DS 7 Crossback mid-sized SUV - and the Peugeot 508. There's slightly less of a 'Fastback' element to the sweeping silhouette than there is with the 508 - and a great deal more front end presence thanks to a large, diamond mesh chrome-effect grille.

Excellently well researched; thank you. I'm a private buyer, currently with a C Class, but really rather smitten by this. The head vs heart debate is a pain in the darned neck! :(

Traded my 2020 508 Fastback, (had from new) to a 71 plate DS9 Rivoli 225! Loved the 508, till I blew the turbo! Now love my D9! To the point were I want to find an excuse to just go for a drive. Can you remember the last time you wanted to do that? Ok, some underpinnings and tools may be shared. But that doesn't mean they are bad. Don't be fooled by some of this guys chat. Both cars are great. However, the 508 and DS9 are worlds apart. In good ways.

i do not know this presenter but he clearly has something against DS or even French cars in general. Always talking about them like French car companies are some kind of amateurs building a few shitty cars in their garage just for fun...
When an Audi A3 and a Seat Leon share the same platform/engines/gearbox I'm guessing that he makes no comment...
It's mainly sad to see this kind of review because DS9 is objectively a rather interesting attempt to build something different and better in many ways (ride confort, running costs, reliability, sound insulation, pricing) than its rivals.

I would quite like to buy one but I've seen literally zero DS9s with a sunroof (and absence of a sunroof is sadly a deal breaker for me). At the Rivoli or Opera levels, sunroofs should be standard.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Thank you. I'll have a little think. I'm really keen on not getting another C-Class and opting for something a bit more off piste. I would not consider one of these as a long term buy due to risky reliability. They are also manufactured using cheap labour/ manufacturing costs in China. Not sure what DS customer service is like but if it is anything like Citroen it won't be that great. I would buy a Lexus ES over one of these. Good review as always thanks.

Actual Citroëniste here... I have had countless (actual) DS, BX, CX, XM, and we stubbornly keep on to our 2015 C5 V6 3 Litre V6 Tourer. The DS9 is as stupid as it is pointless. I kept on company car-wise with a DS5 and a DS7 - then I gave up, Mercedes today. Stellantis is hell-bent to ruin Citroën, Alfa-Romeo and Maserati.
The DS brand (and the DS9 in particular!) is an answer to a question, that noone asked. They are bits of turds, wrapped in cellophane. Imagine this: VW wants to make Audi a premium brand, so the first thing they do is to delete AWD and engines, that people actually want to buy. Then, make sure, that owners can only have their cars servced in 1/20 of their outlets.
And now where we are at it: The DS "premium service" is non-existant. FU, Stellantis.

this is the most condescending review of what basically today is 5 years old model at what would basically be last years of its market life (since its presentation was intended somewhere in late 2017 and lounch in 1H 2018). that I saw up till now.... even testers that openly disliked DS 9 weren't so contemptuous about it...

This model was introduced in 2020, you 🤡. In my opinion, this model is doomed; a guaranteed failure! OSV provided a solid, comprehensive review of a fussily designed but strangely anodyne garlic stink & Gallic shrug of a car. I'd choose the Teutonic models in the class _below_ before this in a heartbeat & without a second thought.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply sadly, no... too expensive. I'll stay with my 2019 P508SW... but I saw the car in person and was frankly amazed by the level of build quality, attention to details and quality of materials used!
compared to my Pug, (allure trim with few options of GT trim) which definitely is not bad looking or badly built car, everything I saw and touched in and on the DS 9 definitely felt "from league above"... didn't drive it though.
what I wanted to say in my - may be a bit harsh - post above is that DS 9 is a hard car to judge... not only its launch suffered several years of postponing, but because like DS 7, design-wise it is "a transition model"... a car that newly formed brand sorely needed to differentiate itself from Citroen DS models, but at the same time (or because of that), like DS7, without true identity in its rather conservative design .even its interior is almost the same as that of DS7...
in this sense, DS 4 is a first true hint of what DS might be or become... this one, regardless of its #flagship status" not only that "missed" almost "half of it's market-life window" with its unfortunately long "birth", but is like DS 7, a model that had an "impossible task" of differentiate itself from Citroen DS models without of "risking too much" with its design... I thik it deserve "some slack" in judgement...

    • @mirkozlikovski9553

      @@Pwwh0711 so?
the fact that it took over two years to officially present it and over three years to introduce it to european marked doesn't have much to do with when it was developed and supposed to be "born"! its presentation was announced to happen "one year after DS 7" (which had its launch in Feb 2017) but dragging complications and finnaly the termination of CAPSA joint venture postponed its presentation first to April 2019, then to November 2019, to be finally presented in March 2020, when Baoeng finally replaced Changan which was initially supposed to produce it... since now days car models are replaced in roughly six to seven years, DS 9 "lost" almost half of its market life! this simple fact makes it (and its built in tech) look dated compared to really brand-new cars today. and professional presenters should know and be able to understand such things....
of course, you have every right to think, like and buy whatever you want or prefer, but that doesn't change the fact that, seen in person, DS 9 have a surprisingly high level of build and overall perceived quality and offers more equipment for less money than German counterparts of its size/segment!
btw... the model tested here is entry level model and, for instance, Rory Reid, that definitely likes "driver's cars" - a characteristic that to this one definitely isn't a first priority - judged it far more positively (on a racetrack)... and definitely with less hair-splitting.
