Budget records, the kind that used to sell for 99 cents back in the fifties and sixties, are a treasure trove of gems like these. In this case, the songs were originally recorded for Gene Autry's Challenge label, which went out of business. The budget label picked them up on the cheap. It's not just with country, it's the same thing with R&B and Rock. Well worth exploring. - Brian McFadden, author "Rock Rarities for a Song" and "Rare Rhythm and Blues on Budget LPs."
I agree with you. I try to only pick up obscure records with songs I've never heard before. The only thing bad about them is the audio quality; some sound like they were recorded in a barn.
Every time I check into this site and other classic C/W sites I find something I hadn't heard before by the great, one and only Wynn Stewart! It amazes me as to how many songs he recorded! How many are there? And how many of them did he write? I know he. did some covers, BFD, everyone did some, but there are a bunch of his recordings I haven't heard by any other performer. To top this rant off, his performances are about as perfect as I have heard by anyone, and I'll bet good money, his work isn't edited to a false perfection. I've only heard one of his recording that left me kind of cold, I won't belabor the issue, it would profane his greatness. I still don't understand the crystal palace crew in Tenn could overlook him, he deserves to be mentioned ahead of the people he gave the big breaks, Buck and Merle for a couple.
Wynn Stewart is very underrated.
“Playboy” sounds massive! Cool reverb on all the cuts.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting.
