Jim & Bob Genial Hawaiians steel guitar 4 songs 1933
These are all from 78 RPM Records and not from the 2012 CDs (those CDs all play way sharp). These are in the correct pitch. I do wish I had the other 8 songs they recorded at their one and only session recorded Dec 12 1933 ....but I don't .....Enjoy

Eddie Valencia's Beachcombers w Dick McIntire steel guitar 1935
Просмотров 3569 месяцев назад
Although the session 5/20/1935 is listed as unknown musicians, it is most certainly Dick McIntire playing steel guitar. Also sounds like Lani McIntire on some of the vocals, with I assume Eddie Valencia also doing vocals. There were two other songs recorded and released from this session but I do not have that 78. It would appear that this was Eddie Valencia's only session, with just the four s...

Part 2 .....These are all pre-electric Hawaiian steel guitar. Recorded in 1933/1934. Seems as though only some of Sol's songs have ever been reissued , mostly on older compilations. I hope these will help fill the gaps with some songs that have never been reissued.I do feel the sound quality is important and try for the best quality I can get by using original 78s. But I am somewhat limited by ...

A nice blend of Hawaiian music and some traditional Jazz instruments. This was something you would not hear to much on records in those days ( or even nowadays). Both of these tracks were recorded Aug 29 1934 in the beginning years of the Electric Steel Guitar. Mannie Klein plays trumpet and Danny Stewart is playing the Steel Guitar. Nice to work with a clean 78 for a change. Sounds pretty good...

Jeanne was my second cousin, she was a year younger than me. It was cool when we were teenagers know I had a singer on the radio. A couple of my buddies thought she was hot. Had a little sister Janie who performed with her. Thanks Chris , it has brought back memories.

Also noteworthy is the driving rhythm section behind this unknown steel player who is absolutely HOT, and his arrangement of the song is quite unique and very good. The bass man and the drummer are into each other's grooves and the band is in the pocket. They sound very studio worthy. This steel player is adept and knows his instrument and employs many of the typical dynamics and steel guitar techniques of the day. Outside of using many of Noel Boggs licks (and a few of Leon McAuliffe's for good measure) the other tip of the hat to the original Bob Wills Texas Playboys recording from 1945 is his imitation of Jimmy Wyble's opening notes from his electric guitar solo heard at 0:18 (which Wyble lifted from Charlie Christian's solo on Benny Goodman's Sextet recording of 'I Can't Give You Anything But Love' from 1940!) from the Wills record as well as Wyble's 'walking up the strings' in ascending octaves heard here at 0:26. I'm thinking this may be a Les Anderson acetate! He was a very great steel player who was known to emulate both Noel Boggs and Leon McAuliffe who was his 1st steel guitar hero. He was a Texas Playboy off and on from summer 1943 until mid-1945 and he made numerous AFRS recordings with Wills as well as an Oct 1945 session for Columbia records where he cut his best-known steel guitar tune, 'This Is Southland' which was recorded by many steel greats and remains a standard. He also worked with Spade Cooley - often trading solos with Boggs on live dances and filling in when Boggs either quit or Cooley fired him. Mostly he was a vocalist for Cooley both at dances, on radio and recordings but he also was an able guitarist on the six-string electric standard guitar playing many of the 3rd part arrangements with Boggs and Wyble (in place of Cameron Hill who did not get on well with Cooley) Les Also made scads of solo records for numerous labels where he sang and played his steel, and was a regular on Town Hall Party. He was the legendary steel player who had a malfunctioning steel or amplifier right after Bob Wills hired him. He missed cues and was unable to play a solo when Bob pointed his fiddle bow and hollered at him, "Take it away, Les!" After the 2nd attempt an irate Wills came up to Les and said, "When I tell you to play, I want you to do something exciting!" The next song Wills hollered again pointing that bow and Les was still unable to get any sound out of his steel. Flustered, Les stood up and kicked his steel off the stage onto the dance floor. Wills never batted an eye, as he went to the mic and said, "Now that was exciting!" the next day Bob and some of the band took Les to a music store and Wills bought him a brand-new steel and amplifier just like the rig Noel Boggs and Joaquin Murphey were playing. Les told me when I interviewed him at the 1989 Bob Wills Days festival concert on the last Saturday in April that year in Turkey, Texas, "I was not a very good steel player. I had no confidence and all I knew was a few of Leon's licks and some of Noel's, especially, Noel's tuning. I was part Leon and part Noel, half and half. Bob told me to do my own thing, and I did that with him. He gave me the confidence to play. He made me believe in myself as a steel player. I was never worth a dime in any other band playing steel, not even my own. I was fortunate to be able to sing. A few of my records even sold and made the charts briefly. I recorded my tune 'This Is Southland' back in 1945 on a little label when I made my first records, but I played it so badly they never released it and the master if they had one is lost. It was probably destroyed because it was terrible. Later that year I recorded it with Bob, and he made that song happen because had not been for him, I never could have played it that well."

I believe these are recordings specifically made for World Transcriptions in 1953 which were made for radio and used as station break tunes all under the 2-minute mark. All of the tunes are instrumentals with very sparse commercial arrangements and no vocals which also speaks to the station break thing. Also noteworthy is the presence of fellow former pre-WWII Tulsa era Texas Playboys alumnus Wayne Johnson on alto sax (who left the band a year or so after 1953) and former Texas Playboys fiddler Keith Coleman who arrived on Leon's Cimarron Boys band in 1953 replacing the recently departed Bobby Bruce who returned to California to re-join Wills and his Playboys briefly right before commencing his lengthy career as a 1st call A-team session man out of L.A.'s AFM Local #47 and his numerous Hollywood film score appearances for the succeeding five or six decades. Coleman can be heard here twin-fiddling with Jimmy Hall who also left the Cimarron Boys in '53.

The National Hawaiian Tricone guitars are sometimes mistaken for electric guitars , they have that slightly distorted electric sound, long sustain and incredible dynamics , from a whisper to a scream ! These Hawaiian non fretting guitars like the one Sol is shown with in the picture with the neck and body made as one piece have that sound that the Spanish style fretted instruments don't really have . That is why the National Tricone was designed, for playing with the steel bar . National Hawaiian German Silver Tricones are incredible instruments. I own a 1928 National Hawaiian German Silver Tricone #945 . National Resophonic instruments can build you a brand new one on a special order . Truly a magical instrument beyond compare .

Excellent video of a true legend. With an instrument hand built by another legend, Paul Bigsby. This instrument is shown extensively in the book "The Story of Paul Bigsby" by Andy Babiuk, (FG Publishing, 2008). This book shows practically all Bigsby's instruments, included his famous Bigsby vibrato. It's a book hard to lay down once you start reading it. Very highly recommended.

This is real musicianship. I doubt that any of today's "super guitarists" could even come close to this level without electronic gimmicks.
