- Hey everyone! I am SO proud and honored to be able to have special guest Matt Barlow on the channel this week. He graciously reached out to me and offered to do an interview, and I couldn't be more grateful for that. I hope you all enjoy the discussion. We talk about a wide range of singing topics that I am sure will prove informative for everyone, singers and non-singers included! For more content like this, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE! Thank you so much!
Thank you SO much to Matt Barlow for chatting with me! I'm sure he will be back in the relatively near future so we can do some analysis of his singing. Check out Ashes of Ares if you haven't done so already!
This is an amazing interview! I really hope that there is more like this. Matt Barlow is one of my absolute favorite vocalists ever. I also hope you analyze more of his music. I would really love to hear your thoughts on "Dracula" by Iced Earth. It shows the amazing strength of his voice.
Also, I may be wrong, but I believe that Matt's recorded vocal range is from C2 - B5. The B5 is hit on "Dead Man's Plight" by Ashes of Ares, and the C2 is hit on "Behead the Deathless" from his first band, Cauldron.
He also hits a C#2 on "Damien" from Iced Earth. And in the same song, he hits a Bb5. These notes are close to his highest and lowest ever hit, in the same song. It's definitely worth checking out, Zach!
Matt Barlow is very down to "Iced" earth :-) He is one of the few metal singers I've heard that went from fame to law enforcement. It's nice to hear he has some other goals in life, also settling down with a family, and doing what he likes with music as a hobby and his work being more in focus. Thumbs up...
D.C Cooper from Royal Hunt is also a fireman in his sparetime, I think.
@@MBJ861 Tommy Kaarevik from Kamelot is a fireman, too (or at least he was when he was in Seventh Wonder)
Matt Barlow is my favourite singer. Iced Earth without Matt Barlow it's not real Iced Earth! Cheers from Greece
totally agree.. I always felt that when it's without Barlow they should change the name..
Nice to see that he is concerned with his live performance when recording. I guess that was not the case when he recorded Dracula in Horror Show album. Those vocals are as crazy as Judas Priest - Painkiller.
Holy shit, I never even considered how horrible singing for 3 hours with no/limited breaks must be. Much respect to singers who do that.
Also, Mr. Barlow, thank you so much for making my teenage years listening to Iced Earth a pleasure. You and the band were one of the main influences in getting me into real classic metal.
I remember when i moved out of home some 16 odd years back, my friend and i would have a few beers, crank travel in stygian live and we'd sing along as loud as we could. Until this day Iced Earth is still my favourite band to listen to live.....some of the tracks sound even better than studio recording.
First comment YEAH.\m/ WHAT A GUY, honest , decent, down to earth , truthful and all around great guy. What else can anyone ask from a Metal singer. Always respected the man since we met but this reaffirms that belief. Iam thankful he shined in my lifetime and i got to see him live in Alive in Athens. Thanks Matt for your music. \m/
That Athens concert was EPIC. You are lucky.
@@marcelo.bassalo Indeed was my friend, rare occasion to love the concert and meet the band.EPIC LIVE. Wish they did those again , Matt is The definitive Iced Earth voice and great guy....................................
If your into metal singers. Check out John Kevill from Warbringer. That dude really shines.
Matt is one of the greats. Close up there with Dickinson and Halford. You can really hear his passion in a lot of music.
If your an opera person check out Phantom Opera Ghost.
been on a Iced Earth binge lately. Barlow is thee voice of Iced earth imo !
thanks for that, and thanks to one of my singing heroes, Alive In Athens is amazing when it comes to singing. "Life's a bitch, life's a whore"
Awesome interview Zach, Matt was really down to earth and honest, makes me want to go and revisit his work with Iced Earth and listen to it with all this info in my mind. Great job!!!
Man, you've made a really great stuff!!
The list of topics you raised is very much complete to get a "personal conversation" with His Excellency mr Barlow, and to get answers to the major questions about singing and so on. The one technically qualified guy interviewed a master, and that was cool. Keep on doing this!
Hello from Belarus, subscription, and thanks a lot!
Thank you sir for an awesome interview with Matt Barlow. I truly enjoy Matt's body of work especially his singing on The Dark Saga album and both of his Ashes of Ares albums. I love it when a high profile singer like Matt is so gracious and humble. Much respect to Matt and to you as well
This is pretty cool. Even if i'm not really a fan, the direct experiences he brings to the table are very interesting
Zach, this is amazing stuff. We get so much ‘technique’ related interviews and insights from metal guitarists, bassists and drummers but nothing from singers... technique in singing always seems to get ignored. Looking forward to more of these videos in the future!
Matt is a beast for sure and is in good shape, he seems to me like a very healthy guy but he stopped touring for a while. You should ask Hansi Kursch about it because that man has been doing it for 30 years and he still can at 54yo and he is able to recover from very long tours and recordings. Also he took vocal classes from an opera singer from krefeld/ germany for many many years.
Michael Sweet is another man with really amazing screams and still can do those at 57. Dan Lucas at 66 still can sing at a very high level.
Hetfield, Mustaine and the others were drug addicts and alcholics, for them a warm up was drinking Jack Daniels and I'm not lying. How do you expect those guys to keep their voices?
Jon Bon Jovi was the one with the cortisone Injection, sadly the man is fucked now.
Damn man. Great question when you asked him what was the most difficult song to record and the most difficult song to sing live.
This is awesome. Matt has always been one of my favorite singers and people in the industry. To see that he was willing to do this just reinforces what an amazing person he is.
Great interview. Thanks to Barlow for being so awsome as a singer and gentleman.
solid guy. something happened between 1995-1997 where his range increased dramatically and from an interesting singer he just became world class. i've read it was lessons. exact same thing happened with hansi kursch. major improvement in like two years. thanks matt for offering zero insight into your singing :D
That was totally awesome!!! As an amateur singer, I found it extremely interesting. I'll have to check out some of your other vids. Please do a part 2 with Matt :) also like he said Tim Ripper Owens would be great!
I'm not sure how you take requests, but it would be cool to see a Geoff Tate / Todd LaTorre side by side lol.
Also Michael Kiske!!! I'm sure it's been requested.
@@dtmania Zach actually has a video on Geoff Tate. He analyzes his technique and what Tate does in that live performance. :)
Good stuff. Thanks for bringing him on, his fan for many years and he is such a humble and down to earth guy. Keep up the good work @Zach
What truly down to earth guy. There is a reason he's one of my fav front men! Great job Zach 🤘😎🤘 🍻
Here it is!!!!!
Comment at 49min... Studio... My best description for a first time professional studio experience is like that dream where you have to give a speech in front of a huge group of people and you realize you are completely naked, or in your underwear! The Studio reveals all of your flaws, mostly the ones you have no idea even exist. Then those flaws are magnified 100 times over. Studio work also shows you that what you do and what you want to sound like live do not typically translate to the studio. Many times you think it sounds like garbage and once the mix happens all the parts fall together like a puzzle.
Fantastic interview! Been an Iced Earth fan for many years. Burnt Offerings and Something Wicked are my favorite albums.
Thanks for bringing Matt on. I'm glad he was able to do it. Much respect for him, so his perspective was really appreciated. Especially liked his mentioning, awareness. of his voice's distinction during ballads. It's true, he brings a soulful, emotional weight, that probably became his unexpected signature. Not many power metal singers have that versatility.
Great questions Zach. Looking forward to the mentioned, next interview.
This is a great interview and a super interesting conversation. Thanks for doing this, Matt and Zach!
My dream is seeing Matt on an episode of Live PD.
What an awesome guy!
This is so freacking good! Looks like both of you learned quite some new things which is nice, Matt saw you in that Horrow Show tour in Europe(Valencia) and it was insanely good considering that the length of the show, as you mentioned, was quite insane.
Can't wait to watch this, so cool that matt reached out to you.
This is gold!! thanks both guys for make this happen
You and Mary Z (Voice Hacks) have become my favourite content creators for singing on youtube. Interviews with metal singers are always useful, you ask what I always wanted to know.
One female singer I'd like to see Zach analyse is Brittney from Unleash the Archers, for better or worse. Just want to see what he thinks of her technique. Feel like Zach would appreciate that Brittney doesn't risk her voice doing harsh screams and has others take care of that. I mention her because Mary Z actually has an interview with her that's worth checking out because they go into Britt singing background a little bit rather than discussing album concepts like most UtA interviews I've seen.
This is great! You deserve* more subs fr!
AWESOME VIDEO ZACH, we really got a lot if insight with this, the questions were great.
also Matt is such a great singer and person, i really hope you can get to do another video analyzing his singing
sing the song's as they should be cheers friends 🍺🍺
Great interview. Thank you very much. On about 27:00 - 28:00 he said that he's tired after talking, doing interviews, and that his voice is more wear out than from singing. It reminded me interview with Bruce Dickinson ruclips.net/video/STrOckfpOQM/видео.html about 3min he said that "talking is a disaster for the voice". I don't know the mechanism but its interesting.
Part of it depends on how one speaks, I think. A monotone talking in his wheelhouse all the time is going to have an easier time than an enthusiastic speaker whose pitch and inflection fluctuates about. Bruce is a pretty lively guy...
This was great. My question would be, like Zach, how many gigs you do in a weeks time. Matt has been doing it for like over 10 (propably much more) years, Dio did it for all his life. Bruce has done it since he was 14 or something. What else you have except the studies to confirm that they're doing it wrong? I mean you have gone through a lot, but isn't singing more than just a to make sure that everybody hears it in the back of the room. Microphones have been a thing for a very long time. And I like how Matt talked about mic techique (and I like how you didn't ask him about it). I would like for you to talk about how opera or Bel Canto actually makes singers feel unique or make us feel like they don't all sound like one person.
how do we connect to Zach against Pavarotti? And actually feel different emotions?
We are the sentinels
I’m curious if there may be a cameo appearance for Matt during the upcoming Demons and Wizards US tour🤔
That’d be great though.
What the fuuuck how did you know
Holy Jesus Dante’s Inferno was his first experiment with Iced Earth and his hardest studio performance... well no problem there bud
maybe look into klaus meine from scorpions considering he damaged his voice bad enough to almost having to retire and still is on the road for like 50 years
how is it to talk to the god? :D ... he is my number one with Eric Adams (from Manowar) and Floor (from Nightwish)
btw... You forgot about Sentinels (he has amazing singing there as well)
Two of my favorites are Barlow and Floor too :)
dude, you should check Tim Ripper Owens.
ruclips.net/video/VN6BunuFgrg/видео.html this song in particular!
That is why more regular performers lip sync and use backing vocals. Singing 8 shows in a week is just not practical. More active singers (Celine Dion, Beyonce etc) are well known for utilizing backing vocals in most of their shows.
Beyoncé is apparently trained in Bel Canto being trained by opera singer David Lee Brewer. How true this is I’m not sure.
@@SamuelBoy1991 It's not heard anywhere
Mariah Carey has a dog call high note Whistle is that even a note ?
