What's the plan with the gearbox? Presumably this thing will be producing a heap of extra torque when you're finished with the mods. I've seen dynos of cars producing an extra 100-150Nm of torque with a catback, upgraded intercooler and piping and a flash tune. That's somewhere in the region of a 30% uplift compared to stock. I haven't been able to track down what the gearbox is rated at, but even 30% over stock seems like it could be pushing the boundaries from a longevity point of view and with the build you're putting together you're probably going to be even higher. What sort of factor of safety do OEMs normally build into their boxes?

Excellent question and I am not sure what Daz (the owner) is planning to do with the gearbox to handle the extra torque. I'll have a chat with him as it's worth considering upgrading the clutch especially considering he does track the car. Sequentials are just too damn expensive! I imagine it would be difficult to find the OEM safety factor on the torque specifications of the gearbox. The best way to tell is from real world experiences of different setups and what it can handle. Do you have a GR Yaris and considering upgrading the drivetrain in yours?

@@denstoj Yes I have a Rallye which I mostly use on weekends, but I intend to run in the summer rallysprint series later this year. Just for fun though as I don't have the budget to compete with the guys with fully built tarmac cars. It seems like it's relatively easy to extract a lot more power and torque out of these cars, but the gearbox is a weak link. I've had that feedback from one of the workshops over here in WA that has a shop car that they've stuck cams and a tune into. They ran into issues with hard track work. Likewise there are reports out of the UK of similar issues at a range of tune levels with 5th gear in particular being a problem. I'd like a bit more oomph but I think for the time being I'll focus on handling and reliability mods. I used to have an Evo 9 tarmac car and the biggest jumps in performance came with tyres and suspension and a reduction in weight.

That would be fun for sure but yes hard to compete when the $ start adding up. Focusing on handling and reliability mods is a smart approach. Keen to hear how you go.

Yep keen to see what Ben from Benchmark can get out of it on the dyno. Will make a video on it for sure. It’ll be tuned on Ecutek.
