Suggestion - and what I do every time I solo fish: Get a long spearfishing coiled lanyard for the kill switch and ALWAYs have it connected to you; in a belt bag/fanny pouch carry a PLB and a waterproof handheld VHF; wear a PFD - I suggest this one which is hydrostatically activated: Mustang Survival MD518313 Elite Inflatable PFD. If you had slipped and fallen overboard as you were out on that day, it’s pretty unlikely you’d have survived. Not trying to be a downer and yes, the above items collectively will set you back about $600-$700 but if your are otherwise floating out there in the open blue with nothing but your shorts and t-shirt you’d gladly give up all your worldly possessions to have that gear.
Crazy Catch!!! You go Lobster Hands Dan!! Wow, that is kinda scary being out there by yourself. Be careful, but keep on catching. Casey my son is home with covid and can't wait to go out and catch one of those, I don't know about the high speed patrol thing, but if it works.... lol
High speed trolling Is one of the preferred methods of catching Wahoo here in the Keys. Hope your son is feeling better soon. Elizabeth and I finally shook off the Covid bug after almost 4 weeks.
@@FloridaFishingCouple Thank God for your you tube fishing adventures, it keeps him off the Gaming. You should invent a gaming fishing video, kids could pick their lure of choice, there boat, put in there gps codes and actually learn from it! lol.
I'm a West coast fisherman and I fish alone more often than not, including 60 mile solo albacore trips. Being out there alone is very freeing! If you're leader is that long can't you make it a wind on? (We don't really wanna handline on the westside I guess haha) great fish and good on ya for doing it alone!
Sam Shotgun: Yes, I suppose a wind on is possible however there is a 26 to 48 oz weight attached to a cable and 400lb leader to the mainline. Probably lots of ways to wahoo!! -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple ok I missed the weight, I thought it was a surface trolled lure.. I have never caught a wahoo yet so I am not the authority on it or anything by any means! I have noticed that in Florida they use long long leaders that you sometimes don't even see the fish when you start leadering it in. There is nothing that is even close to that on the west coast, we have like a maximum of 7-10' leader and a long pole so you can fight it to the gaff or net. I just like to know how everyone does it and try to use what works best for me. I would be super stoked with a good hoo like you got! Great job!
Hey Dan Its better to be lucky than good ! Why no PFD too macho? Once hooked up slow down to a couple of knots. Bring in the other rods and play him after all you dragged him for mile and a half all over the ocean at trolling speed...Monster hahah that's why guys think their junk is a foot long !
Few tips, when the fish is running, get the gaff somewhat ready. Never know if a shark can show up last second and take some of your fish. Or if a hook can shake out. Also, turn the boat and leave it in idle. Then you can easily pull the wahoo in and gaff it at a better angle. Just safer and prevents losing the fish!
I fish alone with no preserver and rarely do I connect my long kill switch line. DONT FALL OVERBOARD is constantly in my head. I know every move my boat is going to make if I’m uneasy I add some precautions, usually a the kill switch.
Just purchased a MOB remote kill switch. I haven’t installed it yet, but will do a short video when I do. Check it out for your own safety. Might save your life someday.

I was around St.Pete's for Christmas visiting family, did some dock fishing, the red tide goofed up a lot of things But.. I was surprised I got a nice slot snook the one night off the lit docks. lady fish and mullet are coming back strong. Never in my life have I seen someone fighting a fish while pushing 15 knots with the rod still in the holder and 800 feet of leader to hand line in. But, at least you had your earplugs with you.
Well done mate!!! Have you ever tried your luck with lipped plugs like a YZ Bonita or a Rap 30? More like 6-7 knots so you don't cover as much water but way easier to manage solo without all the weights and what not.
John Ballantyne: I have used the X-raps for Kings but never wahoo. Have you had much success with them for wahoo? Would be a helluva lot less terminal tackle to deal with. -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple Not personally, never tried, but I know guys that swear by it. Give it a go and let us know how it works. Oh and while you're at it some slow-pitch jigging too :-)

hey there! this is Chris and i was a subscriber to South Florida Fishing Channel and then moved over to you guys! Side note - I am a very experienced angler and definitely know what i'm doing. lol i live in Boca and can come down there any weekend or with notice in a day.
Just started watching your videos. Great work! I'm all fresh water fishing but running at that high speed by yourself with no life preserver or attached kill switch. I might be missing something. Stay safe out there.
Mike Buettner: Nope, you are correct; i learned a lot from making that video and reading all of the comments. We now have a kill switch, wear a PDF and are more safety conscious overall. Thank you for watching and subbing our channel! -Capt Dan & Elizabeth
That looks like an awesome time and a bit challenging. I've not done much of that type of fishing. Why does the boat have to keep moving at that speed when you get a hook up? It seems like there wouldn't be much fight in the fish after being pulled behind the boat like that.
High speed trolling with bent rods is more about getting the fish on board than trying to fight the fish. He hits that plug at about 40mph while you are moving between 15-20 mph. Lots of strain on the gear and terminal tackle. -D
Elizabeth Baker: well the main line is 100lb braid but the terminal tackle includes a 48oz weight, 24 feet of 400 lb shock leader and an awesome home made wahoo lure which is listed in the description above. -D
OK Sarge... You did WELL solo. But for overall quality of all aspects of your fishing day, including SAFETY, go with a fishing partner or two. Even if you're paying for most everything you'll be better off. BOL....
Nice job Dan. If Elizabeth was with you that fish would be bigger. Ha ha. Great job way to keep the speed on while navigating. Other boats and reef edge I am thinking. I did see one boat.
I gotta ask, while you were reeling in the fish I get taking breaks. It’s a lot of work with wahoo. But what were you looking for. You kept looking off to the side like there was something there? Even my buddy said the same thing.
Keith Bobik he was looking for other boats or debris at that speed you cover 300 feet quick the boat fights the fish as soon as he get tired he turns you reel in but Dan had ten lbs of weeds so hard to reel in real workout
And I thought catching Wahoo on high speed was hard enough with two people! Good job on the solo catch!

Never in my life have I seen someone fighting a fish while pushing 15 knots with the rod still in the holder and 800 feet of leader to hand line in. But, at least you had your earplugs with you.
That’s the best comment ever!!! Thanks!! 🎣 -D
At least I’m not the only one. I mean 5 knots maybe but fighting a fish at 15 is ridiculous! But hey what do I know!?
Well done mate!!! Have you ever tried your luck with lipped plugs like a YZ Bonita or a Rap 30? More like 6-7 knots so you don't cover as much water but way easier to manage solo without all the weights and what not.
John Ballantyne: I have used the X-raps for Kings but never wahoo. Have you had much success with them for wahoo? Would be a helluva lot less terminal tackle to deal with. -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple Not personally, never tried, but I know guys that swear by it. Give it a go and let us know how it works. Oh and while you're at it some slow-pitch jigging too :-)
John Ballantyne: Jigging is what got us the Donkey Amberjacks! -D
I got motion sickness from watching:) nice job !
what an amazing video and you landed it solo! that's a big torpedo! WAHOO
ricky33183: Yes sir! That was an awesome day for me. That fish kicked my butt! -Capt Dan
Human Winnie the Pooh try and get some rod holders on the side of the boat
So were you high speed trolling with a wahoo for bait?
Huh?
Hi Dan congrats on your solo Wahoo fishing, Nice fish great day love your channel. I hope to see Elizabeth on your next Wahoo adventure.👍👍
Martin Hoyte: Can’t wait to see Elizabeth haul in one of these monsters too!! -D
Saw a 1SG rank on your boat. Retired military?
Excuse me SGM
gregory cox: Guilty as charged Greg; 23 years U.S. Army. Currently the captain of the vessel ANOVA. Thanks for reaching out. -Capt Dan
Got three years left in the Army myself and I'm looking to get a boat and fish my ass off. Love watching your videos, shows you dont need much to do what you love.
gregory cox: Thank you for serving Greg. Been a rough go for our military these past few years. Congratulations on the upcoming retirement; we enjoy each and every day; especially being landlocked at many military assignments over the years. Thanks for watching our vids and subscribing to the channel. There really is life after Uncle Sam!! -Capt Dan

hey there! this is Chris and i was a subscriber to South Florida Fishing Channel and then moved over to you guys! If you are ever looking for an angler to go out with i would love to get on some Tuna or especially Wahoo with you because the Wahoo seem to be coming in! Side note - I am a very experienced angler and definitely know what i'm doing. lol i live in Boca and can come down there any weekend or with notice in a day.
Chris Redding: Sounds good! Might just take you up on that offer sometime after the new year! -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple sounds good to me. My cell number is 407-437-8561 just in case.
Great fish but it amazes me how you didn't manage to lose him
Ryan Barnett: Ha! It amazes me too Ryan! -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple That was a really nice catch for sure. Thanks for creating this adventure.
Rad Reeling Fishing: Thanks man. Appreciate your channel as well. Tight lines bro! -D
Nice fish! What kinda of line and rig do you use?
Elizabeth Baker: well the main line is 100lb braid but the terminal tackle includes a 48oz weight, 24 feet of 400 lb shock leader and an awesome home made wahoo lure which is listed in the description above. -D
Thank you!
Were is your PFD over board your gone
Great job best video and make sure you rub it in heiko's face Legend says he still stuck between the mountains lol
Jose Corujo: Looks like he might be back in the Keys soon. Gonna have to show him how it’s done! 😂 -D
@@FloridaFishingCouple thats right rub it in
You stepping over that Wahoo's mouth with flip-flops gives me so much anxiety.
There were a lot of anxious moments that day when I look back at that video! Thanks for subbing our channel.
@@FloridaFishingCouple
Thank you for the great videos.
I'm still hunting my first Wahoo. That's going to be a great day!
OK Sarge... You did WELL solo. But for overall quality of all
aspects of your fishing day, including SAFETY, go with a fishing
partner or two. Even if you're paying for most everything you'll be
better off. BOL....
Nice job Dan. If Elizabeth was with you that fish would be bigger. Ha ha. Great job way to keep the speed on while navigating. Other boats and reef edge I am thinking. I did see one boat.
Robt Perez: No doubt Elizabeth is one helluva fisherman! Next time hopefully! -D
circle back towards the fish make a wide turn
deplorable joe: Yup, next time..... -D
Hooked-n-Rolling Offshore 2009: Exactly! Looking for other boats, buoys, and reefs. Could have been a very different video otherwise! -D
Great video and great catch! Did you have any strips or anything on the lure or were you just fishing it bare?
Magdiel Rodriguez: Mo ballyhoo or strips. High speed trolling requires a skirted trolling lure and bare hooks. -D
