This is the best RUclips video that I saw about wahoo fishing. He takes his time and goes into a lot of detail about all aspects, including the equipment, how to make the lures, how to troll and how to target wahoo. Among all the videos. I’ve watched this is by far the best and I thank you for the information.

I caught one with some tuna a few years ago. Weighing in at 73 Pounds. It’s been my biggest fish so far Heath.

Thanks a boat load for watching and sharing. Most wahoo fishing makes for good practice. Unless you head to the Bahamas, Cat Kay, then it's more like catching. 100% correct, put in that work and it'll pay off. This past year, they were relentless in February. We'll see what happens. My grandmother, who lives in Key Largo, says there is a hot Hoo bite down there, so I'm hopeful. Great info. I hate high speed trolling. I will take them as bycatch in my spread. Ilander and a large double hook Ballyhoo on the shotgun and a Rapala XRap 40 for a deep bait. Only use mono/flouro and haven’t been cut off yet. High speed you definitely need the cable like you said. Tight lines.
Thanks a million for watching and sharing. It's funny you mention your spread and the bycatch, which is very common to get the bite with. Sounds very similar to my standard spread. I use a #6 planner and a strip bait lure tipped with a bonito strip and up on top I'll have out a blue & white Ilander with double hooked ballyhoo, 60 to 80 pound mono leader, no wire. Stealth is key to getting the bite. For high speed, the cable is a must your are right. Great to hear from you and I appreciate your support for the channel. Best wishes for the new year. Hi Kenny, Hi speed wahoo strikes are some of the most awesome hook ups. That line zings out at like 60 mph. Plus, it always catches you off guard and makes you jump out of your seat. It's a violent strike. Never gets old. I go wahoo fishing in March, other than that, if I catch them, it's incidental. Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel. Tight lines & take care ;)
Captain Heath thank you for the tutorials, I want to follow your tips but I got crossed up on some advice you gave. On your Jan 13, "How to troll a planer", you were emphatic about zig zagging while trolling in that episode, in this episode you advised straight line trolling because it is less time consuming covering ground. Can you expand on the difference? Your enthusiasm and energy is appreciated, tight lines.
Thanks a million for watching and asking an important question. You are correct. Let me explain. These are two entirely different tactics of fishing. While planer trolling is slower, making s-shaped curves up and down the reef line make sense, because the slower speed allows your line to straighten out behind the boat and follow your path more easily. At high speeds, the line curvature can't keep up with the speed of the turns... So, planer trolling you're not not trying to cover a wide range of distance, your trying to cover more range in depth to find the fish. High speed trolling, you are covering, both distance and depth, just in a straight line. What I do, is I start at something like 185 feet head in a straight line up the reef for several miles, then I'll change depth, go to about 200 - 225 then head back down the reef, then I'll change again 250 - 275... I'll repeat this process until I find the fish or I run out of time... If I've completed the pattern once or twice and no hits, I'll move past the end point of the run and start the process over. This is how you cover a large area systematically when high speed trolling. Hope this explains it a little more clearly for you. My big lip lure wouldn’t go deep - it stayed at or near surface - help?
Excellent Video again. What weight inline sinker did you use? At 14-18knots, trolling 200ft how deep will that get the lure below the surface?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. My inline sinker is 3 lb or 48 oz. When you're doing 14 to 18 knots that keeps you just below the surface about 1 to 2 ft. You're not looking to go down 20 or 30 ft in the water column. You want the wahoo to come up from behind up on top and attack the bait from the tail which is what this type of predator does that's why the hooks are always hanging out the backside of it. What shock leader (besides the wire) do you use when trolling the plugs? Could I use a wind on leader as shock leader?

Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. When it comes to high speed trolling you have choices. If you're concerned about the resiliency of your line you can use between an 80 lb test and 150 lb test of wine on liter that's just fine. However if you have 50 lb test as your main line that's more than suitable for attaching a lure like a Bonita with cable on it and going straight to your main line. Hope this helps. Hi Mickey, thanks for watching. 100% correct. It's the same cable for sharks. I'm not much of a shark angler, but if there's someone who thinks they're super tough, I'll hook them into something like an 8 or 9 bull, tiger or hammerhead and all of the sudden they aren't so tough. The wahoo have been scarce so far, but the bite should be turning on towards February, we'll see. I always get excited with anticipation when I'm out high speed trolling, there's nothing like a high speed strike... It seems endless. Hope all is well with you & your family. Stay warm. Every reel is different. I usually set the drag when I'm up and running. You want it to be just tight enough to not creep out, yet not so tight that you yank the hook out of the fishes mouth. It's really a feel thing. Once you get dialed in, it becomes like second nature
One question if you say best wahoo time is during the full moon phase 3days before and after is this for day trolling and dont they feed all night during the big moon
Yes they do feed, but the moon pulling the water, making it flow stronger, kicks in the wahoo's primal instinct to feed on opportunity.

No weight needed. Use about 4 feet of 270 lb test multi-strand cable as a leader

I've question. With the yo zuri Bonita does the cable connects also to a ball bearing snap swi el on the main line?
Yes... you need a 300 lb test ball bearing swivel on your mainline

Heath I'm new to this and never caught a hoo but my question is why do you use a 270# steel leader with only 50# mono on the reel ?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The 50 lb mono on my reel actually has a quite large diameter, some other folks use 80, which I think is overkill. 50 is tough enough to take the pressure of the strike, yet pliable enough to provide the shock absorbance needed to allow the line to stretch so the line won't snap at the connecting point to the swivel which holds the cable. 270 lb cable is needed because wahoo have a ferocious strike, the cable prevents a cut off. the 2 offset pound tests are irrelevant. I have fished wahoo for many years, and this is the smartest combo I have come up with. Hope this helps. Best wishes for the new year. Tight lines & take care ;)
How do you know that you’ve gotten your line out the correct length and the lure is at the right depth?
They way I go about calculating line is if I'm doing about 5mph I'm letting out about 10ft per second. The depth is pre-calculated by the manufacturers of the diving plugs or planer. Make sure to use braid as your main line so diving plugs troll properly. Use 25 to 50 feet of 100 lb test leader.
Great. Are there wahoo in the Gulf outside Tampa Bay? Or would I be wasting my time trolling that region for wahoo?

What size spinning reals where you using in this video. I’m thinking about using a size 6500 penn for wahoo but not sure if it’s too small. Is it okay?
6500 is good but be ready for a fight... Too much pressure can be bad... Wahoo on spinners is always a life changing experience

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes I have some nomads. My favorite one is the DTX 220 LRS it looks like a little false albacore. Trolls great in between 6 and 16 knots. Mono over braid for trolling ?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes for me personally, especially when high speed trolling mono instead of braid. Mono stretches and has shock absorbency and helps set the hook Braid doesn't give and can't pull hooks, even with a good shock chord. If you're out of Sanibel, you'll have to make a good run to get into water deep enough for them but they are there. Texas, off Galveston is apparently a hots spot now. A little info, wahoo are found around the world... I chat with folks from Pakistan, Australia, Hawaii, and several other places, all of which hold wahoo. Wahoo fishing originated in Hawaii, where European explorers were mapping out Hawaii they were discovered these fish were plentiful and made a great food commodity off the island of Oahu, hence the name wahoo.
