- With winter beginning to show its fury, my attention has turned to some indoor projects. I decided to attempt a unique build involving converting a plastic model car to a RWD RC drift missile. In this video I introduce the project car for this build; an assembled 1/24 1991 Pontiac Firebird model kit. Give an over view of my plans for this project, and tear down the model to give myself a clean slate to mount the electronics to. As I was building I realized a 1/24 scale axle I previously used in a similar car set up for drag racing would fit nearly perfectly in to this car, adding an extra level of realism but also add difficulty to this already tricky build. Will it drift? Will it even drive? Will it catch on fire? Too early to tell but this will be one epic build.

note: when buying non-hobby grade motors always look for CARBON BRUSHED motors. conventional DC motors use thin metal fingers as brushes which wear through quickly. carbon-brushed motors are blocks which have a lot of material to wear through.
Nerf gun mod motors such as meishel 2.0 or fang revamped are very good for wear too
Wow that's a pretty accurate model of a 3rd gen. The mirrors fell off and even the panel gaps are spot on.
I honestly cannot wait. This is making me giddy, ever since I was little I've been in love with the idea of doing this. I have no idea how you made that rear axel, especially that small but it's glorious. I'm super excited to see how you work out the steering, especially with the motor being in it's "proper" place. Thank you so much for this!
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad your enjoying the build! By the way the rear axle is 3D printed.
Really? The gears as well? thats super impressive.
Yep gears as well. 3D printing is definitely opening a lot of doors for what can be built.
Make It RC That's for sure. It's something I've wanted to get into and seeing your videos, it's like childhood dreams are coming true haha. If I may, what 3D printer do you use? I'm assuming a bit if a higher end one considering how intricate some of those gears most be.
The axle components and gears were made on a Formlabs Form 2 which is a higher end machine. I'm surprised it was able to print the gears being so small. I knew these printers were good but I didn't know they are that good.
Cant wait to see it moving
A childhood dream, really cant wait to see this completed build
the chunk of plastic..u took out....is pretty funny.....becuz thats where they rot in real life 🤘😂🤘😂😂😂
lol I guess that just makes it more scale then.
Make It RC lol
Fords rock
Rocking the primer actually suits the era of this car.
Tim Johnson I agree it gives it a drift missile vibe
How?
For even more realism....I was thinking a few mismatched body parts and rotted out rocker panels
The firebird was built for scca racing and other things so it had enough frame strength to go around the tracks, Not drifting, there were plenty of manual cars running around. If you had a motor with more torque then you had to fabricate something, I used bed frame rails. Car has been running in the 9’s with no issues.
I would like if you could keep it close to original, how it was back in the days, including the paint, but this one brings back some good memories from childhood best TV series.
I had one of these, great car,no issues with durability,it was built like a truck driveline wise ,build quality typical of the time, but bags of character and fun, extremely comfortable and great value car.
Holy shit! By far one of the best channels I’ve ever found! Please never stop taking regular models and turning them into rc cars, this is amazing!
I've been using diecast cars and trucks! I've also used plastic models mostly for tractor trailers! Like BJ & the Bear, Movin' On, Smokey and the Bandit so I have my RC TV & Movie trucks!
This guy is good at wasting peoples time and not getting straight to the point.
Video starts at 4:00
After 2 years of searching on the topic I've found one video. This one. Thanks dude
1991 Firebird. That's my dream car! I have a few models of them. All of them are Monogram kits. I am quite excited to see this completed and it gives me inspiration to do this as well
It would look nice if the engine will be visible.Either do not put back the bonnet or could ✂️ it a bit and make sure engine is visible.I would paint it a dark red / bordeaux. Good luck with the build
For the motor and /esc/reciever unit, use the 8000kv brushless from the Carisma GT24B. Perfect scale and god damn it has power!
Fender flares would be sick, especially if you build custom one piece louvers and a chin spoiler for the front.
Knight Rider K.I.T.T. black with lights all around and if possible functional head lights. If you pull this you'll be RC Mod King...
You can change the pop up head lights and make them actually work
Hey! I have absolutely 0 experience in this field, but I just wanted to suggest that you look into Nerf replacement motors. There's a surprisingly large community for modding Nerf blasters and they've even started custom making electric motors. You can get some really good quality 2S and 3S motors in 130, 132, and 180 sizes. Carbon brushes, neodymium magnets, the whole bit.
Interesting, thanks for the comment.
Caught my eye… I’m a big Firebird fan so can’t wait to see how this turns out.
Can't wait to see all the electronics go into this, I'm really tempted to do one myself, a nice little budget drift car like this would be great
YOU’RE ON CREATOR ON THE RISE FOR ME!!!!!!!!
add a stereoscopic camera to it and switch the radiocontrols to something that is synced up with a racing steer and peddles and you could drive your mini car
You got yourself a sub. Great channel! Good luck on your build! Can't wait to see it done!
Mirage me 2
Mirage is that your Z?
Charlie Manson I wish. I just found it on a Japanese blog I passed by.
and he's got another sub too. can't wait for pt. 2.
+1
Woever sells those electric motors is missing a great opportunity to make them look like well known engines for applications like this.
You can remove the paint on the body with spray on oven cleaner . It won't hurt the plastic . I'd paint the car white with satin black accents .
It would be so cool to almost do a bosozoku style. With huge front splitter, widebody, victory pipes!
You should leave the front bumper off, put a cage there. Then paint it dark red with 1 of the headlights being black. Drift missile!
Where did the functioning 1:24 scale Driveline and rear-end come from that's the biggest question everybody wants to know????
You can find those components here: shop.makeitrc.com/pages/vehicles-kits-and-parts-1
Thanks bud
I've actually painted outside while it was raining and then just brought it inside as quick as possible and stuck it in my dehumidifier and never had an issue. May help you in a future build. Great looking build btw!
Just to say... squirt some 3n1 oil in the crankcase through the crack then fix the crack with some baking soda and super glue by mixing them together. Don't know why I haven't seen this video til now but better late than never :) As for the body I think I would have chopped the windshield about 1/8" ish just to give it a meaner look... moving on to the next video.
If you're not putting the engine and transmission in, then you could put it into your mini garage on a crate or an engine crane
Epic!!! I did the same model a few years ago! Got crushed b4 I could finish....
Leave the body primer and distress it to make it look like a real drift missile. Add scale stickers, bash bar, etc.
Just got into modding my own models and converting them thanks to u! Would live to see a 1950s era rc car.
The condition of that car matches what you'd find a real one in
I did this with a large scale diecast 74 chevy vega model. I put 2 mini blender motors in it an a cd player motor on the steering. I also put a wheel to each rear motor to see what i could make an to my surprise i was drifting a diecast vega around the dirt bicycle track at the house i grew up in.
Paint it porsche mint green, one of the coolest colours ever.
Maybe tube the front.
Would look dope and you have room for everything else
Make it a drift K.I.T.T
Or Smokey and the bandit transam
@@crazygamers9358 Smokey and the Bandit was an older model. Looks nothing like this one.
@@ThatWolfWithShades IT doesnt matter, the black with the golden eagle is timeless :)
@@attackhelicopter7403 It'd look hella out of place on this model.
Maurice-Mores
Leave it primer grey...looks badass like it is
I think this is an awesome idea and you should totally paint it Sunfire Orange
Dunno how you managed to pop up on everyone's suggested, but I'll have some of you. I have a homemade 1:25th '69 Charger. Subbed.
69 charger, bet that looks nice
The music is amazing
Found an Audi R8 1-24 for $2 bucks at a thrift store in Kansas. Looking to get cracking on this conversion!!
Bright red with a gold screaming chicken on the hood. 80's style!
First time viewing your channel. LOVE IT!!! I’d like to see the car painted black and lowered. Maybe it’ll look more mad!
Definitely will be lowered. Ride height looked way too high before IMO. Glad you like the channel!
I'm happy I found this page couldn't find a channel like this
I've always wanted to see that car with a ducktail or rocket bunny spoiler. What about making the pop-ups be halfway and have leds?
That firebird looks cool
love the song w the axle fitting
Same. links to all songs are always in the description if you want to check them out.
Good job you have inspired me into making my own eco car with my old Nissan GT-R good job
I didn't even know converting model cars into RC cars was a thing, I like it. Subbed
i remember when you had 260 subs, i was completely shocked that for the quality of your videos you had so little subscribers. Now when i look i see 1.6k well deserved subscribers (in my opinion you deserve more) i'm glad that others like me are looking forward to seeing you videos and are interested in what you are doing. Thanks for posting.
Probably total badassery
This is awesome! I’m sad I have to wait for the next one!
msufhdgc
Man I just love RV cars and model cars😍😍😍
Your info on the Firebird shocked me. The auto shop at my school has a 1991 Firebird with a manual and either a 305 or 350 small block. It was donated after falling off the assembly line and GM wasn’t allowed to sell it. It was repaired by GM and only has 10 miles on it. It might be worth something.
Neat. Reminds me of my auto shop class in high school. The school was near a large GM plant that assembled trucks/SUV's. Trucks that came off the line defective or ones used for testing were donated to nearby schools. It was cool because some of these trucks were well over 30 years old but sill looked brand new.
I am so excited too see where this goes. I know little about electronics but I have hundreds of model cars, and if i can find the parts I would love to build my own some day. Don't forget me when your channel blows up, because I know it will.
I recommend doing an xmods gen 1 and evo video series because it would bring the community back
10/10 for music in this video.
This is freaking amazing, I’ve always dreamed of doing the same.
I vote against fender flares though.
Also, how did you make that rear axle?
The rear axle is 3d printed with steel shafts and bearings.
Ahh, cool. You should do a video making one.
Nathan Kennedy I would like to see the process and the files
Grufhrhc
i would love to see a paintjob in Candy Red with some gold and dark purple metallic flaces or highlights
Personally i would go with the classic firebird paint for the muscle car lovers
I can't wait to watch this series. I had dreamt of turning my model 1979 Chevy Camero into a functioning RC car with a camera. Honesty I had no idea where to start or limitations on such a small size and how brutal the RC system could be. Thus the project is shelved. I wish you best of luck on your build.
Thanks and also you inspired me to try making one of my 1/18 scale diecast cars into an rc car
Mad max the hell outta it my brother has that car it was built in California comes with a TPI that can flow 1000 CFM l.
Also its not a [TA] its a [Firebird Formula] just for people that don't know.
paint it sunset orange metallic, that's the awesome color of the 2001-2002 Camaro and Firebird.
That is a nice color, I've seen several 4th gens painted with it.
Do it right and start with a model kit. Then it'd be easy to hide the motor in the engine. Where did you get a half assembled model car anyway? Also, decide what you are building. Is it a scale model for a curio shelf or r/c car for play? If it's more r/c car than model just put a piece of cardboard on the sidewalk and spray paint the parts. You can do it inside too it just requires more cardboard. You're perfectly safe spray painting that much indoors even if you were in a closet.
RUclips finally shows me something I'm interested in the trending page, definitely a creator in the rise
Yet it seems like it'd make more sense to mod on an unbuilt kit than a finished car though, unless there's no other options. Saves tearing out all those bits you're not going to use anyways.
Unbuilt is ideal, but for $3 I can't complain.
you got yourself a sub and somebody whos gonna build a fucking drift car looks so fun and time consuming
Can't wait to see the rest of the build 👍
Fourth gen and I love these cars I have a 92 V8 firebird I love the idea thank you for making this I love these cars
Wow, didn't expect home...
Rocket bunny bodykit looking asome
i'm starting way late but I've been looking around for 1:24th scale rwd rc drift builds b/c I was planning on doing a custom build myself, this looks really cool so far I can't wait to catch up and see the final result!
I have that same kit. Unbuilt if you want it for parts. Was gonna Mad Max it but you look like you could use it
I have always wanted to do this. I myself have a collection of model cars and have thought about this constantly. Cant wait to follow along with you and your journey. Earned a long time sub here.
Btw u fulfilled my dream of somebody making an RC frm a diecast car
Absolutely stunning work
I didn’t even know this was a thing in the RC world
Can't wait to see the end result 🙃😀
Aw man! Can't wait to see it drifting around. The Knight Rider theme would be obvious but I would love to see it in full metallic gold-brown, or in graphite gray with a bright silver skirt around the bottom. Btw this 80's like song in the background provided a great atmosphere. In my childhood I was dreaming about converting my models into RC cars, but it was impossible for me at the time. But now with a little understanding of electronics and access to a 3D printer maybe I will give it a shot in the near future.
Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to see what a living beauty will this car become.
At the beginning I thought the music was going to get annoying, but you honestly kept switching it up enough so that it never got stale. Great video man, I'll be keeping an eye out for more in the future! :D
Ive done this!!! I used a Monogram 70 Barracuda
I knew it was a Firebird from the thumbnail, but I was hoping to see a KITT RC project. Oh well still looks awesome!
WOW!!!! This video is very educational and informative! 👍🏻 I look forward to seeing more of your videos! You just earned a new subscriber! 🙂
Are you aware that you got the 1982 firebjrd with the modified body that made it K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider? The Hood is the same, as is the front bumper.
So you are moreless required to paint it black and give it the scanner running lights ;)
Cheers! Awesome Work man!
they used the same mold for a custom one, a pace car and this one
Kitt didn't use that spoiler and that funky round front number is 91-92 the kitt used a steep and sharp front bumper
Front bumper is standard, not KITT. Not even T-top.
Hey, I thought K.ITT was a Trans Am..?
I would love the STL. To that rear axle
I've always wanted to do something like this! Though I've had micro RS4 back in the day and played around with that. Also had the RadioShack XMods as well with all possible modifications. The detail you can get with models combined with a powerful RC setup sounds great
Cool stuff, I remember those XMods cars, they were a lot of fun. I should be able to get some great scale detail out of this build and hopefully I can get the performance to match.
Make It RC I can't wait. You definitely have a new sub
Xmods we're the shit. I'm still bent up that I sold both of mine and probably $400 in parts to cash converters for like $20 to get a Nokia NGage lol
I like the primer look, maybe it should stay the way it is. Can’t wait to see it done!!
Yea I do like the primer look as well, gives it some character. Thanks for the comment.
No problem, I was looking to build a 1/10 TransAm to match my real one but I could not find one anywhere & I think I might try to follow your steps and custom build one myself, maybe a 1/18 scale 😃
You are doing a great job making these great videos. Keep it up!!
Glad your enjoying the videos! Depending on what year your T/A is, I believe HPI made a 4th gen 1/10 scale touring body. I'm sure its out of production by now but you might be able to find one on eBay. Also MPC makes a 1/16 82' T/A model kit that would be a bit easier to convert to RC than a 1/24 scale.
Sweet! I’ll check them out, mine is the 3rd gen GTA, and it looks just like the one you are working on, I wonder if sandable Epoxy would work better on your 3D printed parts for smooth surface? I used stuff like that when I fix Motorbike fairings, it’s super durable and sticks to plastic really good
Sandable epox might work. I may try it out some time in the future. Good Idea.
Do a jdm style build with bright colors, details, fender flares front lip jdm wheels extra low and a street style spoiler
Why do you not have a million subs
what kind of "ready to run" out of the box store bought rc car would this scale well with just so we can get an Idea?
If it terns out well im going to do my own but instead using a 1970 challenger made by revell
This is some quality production jeez
losi micro vehicles have tiny little trans and diffs as well as axles, wheels&tires :)
