I finally got the Arduboy FX, the black version with 300 games. I've been wanting one for a few years now and finally convinced myself to spend the money.

@@RetroZoltan I'm enjoying it so far, and I'm surprised at how smooth the 3D environments actually run.
Right? I love the simplified games like space taxi and that sort of thing. Brilliant honestly. I have the mini and will be doing a review on that soon.
I appreciate your review on this. I found out pre-orders were open on a new batch and went ahead and ordered one. It seems like something worth bringing along on errands where I have a long wait for the bus or slow shifts at my job.
It’s super fun to explore. There are a ton of things on there! I still mess with mine a lot!
Pretty sweet. I know C++ myself! I like these sort of games with constraints because sometimes it's really surprising what people manage to pull off with them.
It’s a pretty amazing device. I feel I didn’t really give it justice, but I was rating the FX portion mostly. I bet you would love PICO 8

BTW, today there is a solution to make and upload custom-made game packs into the expansion chip. It's still in beta (I think) but actually works. (FX Flashcart loader). In general, because this console is more geek-oriented, it's advisable to check community forums now and then - it's always in development and new people bring new tools, games and possibilities all the time.
Agreed! This video is a bit outdated, I actually made it when the FX first came out … but I really should do an update now that there are new discoveries. All the issues I had with it are now gone for sure. Definitely checking out FX Flashcart loader!

To reset, just hold up+down - it will take you back to the menu. 🙂

What improvements would you like to seeing the future?
I would love being able to add / load multiple games as well as an easy way to drop out of loaded games. Other than that I can’t imagine much more than one that does color.
Don’t want to sound like a little brat but my issue with the Arduboy was the quality of the games. There are so many bad games, a lot of “meh” games and very few that are really worth your time. I really enjoyed Circuit Dude but that was about it.
I get it, and your not the first to say so. The games are all free and of course you really have to dig to find a favorite. I kind of wish they allowed you to update the flash .. removing the ones you don’t like and adding only ones you do.
@@RetroZoltan I didn’t realise you couldn’t add / remove games from this model. That’s a concern for me if that’s the case. Good point that they’re all free, so you can’t really complain too much. Wish I had the time to develop games myself as that seems to be the way to really get the most out of the Arduboy.
Same! I wish I had the time also. As I said in the review I think it was just so everyone could play all the stuff without having to upload anything. Nothing more (sadly).. Still holding out for one more version that will allow you more control of the inventory of games. That would be thrilling .. and a reset button. Lol
@@RetroZoltan You can create your own carts - its not too hard but requires you to download all the games to a directory, make a CSV 'manifest` and run a python script. Its actually really easy! I have made one of just my own games.
@@simonholmes7877 are you serious?!!! Ok this changes everything for me. Honestly both complaints I had about the FX seems to be covered now .. so it’s time for another look back to the FX! I’ll try to include some of your games in the next look for sure Simon :)

The only problem is it's impossible to just buy one. You have to wait for a preorder time, make your preorder, then wait for it to finish and be made... It sux. I just want to buy one.
Holy crap I had no idea that even the distributors were clean out. I ended up getting mine from seeedstudio but they are even out of stock also. Your best bet (I guess) is to keep checking the distributors. Here is the list (if you don't have it).

@@RetroZoltan I love those open source projects like the arduboy, pokitto, uzebox, but they are always hard to find. Even some cool closed comercial projects like the zx spectrum next can be trick to find.

Not for Arduboy specifically, but systems can now emulate it so you can play on almost anything now.
Went to go buy one but they would not let me buy one unless I used Paypal so I opted out, I am not going to jump through hoops to buy a social game platform that will be obsolete in a few years.
I remember having to go way out of my way to get the first one I bought. Its cool, but now it feels like It’s a novelty item at best, I hardly use mine these days.
Lol @ the "games" on this. It's a disgusting joke that they made it look like a Gameboy - the Arduboy doesn't even have the capabilities of an Atari from 45 years ago, much less a Gameboy.
I think it’s the added challenge to try to code or port something good that can handle so little. I imagine that’s the idea (like PICO-8). If you make it able to handle more, your not going to get people making a lot of free stuff.
@@RetroZoltan It's so weak because the hardware wasn't designed to play video games. It has no sprites, sound channels, background tiles, not even the greyscale color palette the GameBoy had. Yes, I was very impressed by the SimCity demo, but it can never be a complete game because that's the limit of what the Arduboy can do. I agree that there's no challenge on more powerful hardware, but the challenge with Arduboy is just to make an actual game. By including an egg timer in their "200 games", they're admitting that it can't do any more.
@customsongmaker lol the egg timer is pushing it. Maybe was too early for the FX mod.
