A 27 Mile Adventure Hiking North Carolina's Tanawha Trail!

Join me in my adventure along the Tanawha Trail in North Carolina! The Tanawha Trail stretches 13.5 miles from Beacon Heights to Julian Price Park. The trail mostly parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway on Grandfather Mountain, even going under and around the Linn Cove Viaduct and over the ever popular Rough Ridge. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) also runs jointly with Tanawha Trail and this section marks the beginning of Segment 5 of the MST. My hike was a complete out and back giving me nearly 27 miles on the day. The cloud cover really prohibited the normal panoramic views but… I was still on trail 😊. While I was really using this hike as training for Hike for Healing, it HAD been on my list for a while to complete it end-to-end as I had hiked several sections prior.
Tanawha is the name the Cherokee, ᏣᎳᎩ, (my people) called this mountain before others came into the area. Pioneers then named the mountain "Grandfather" after recognizing "the face" of an old man in one of the cliffs. The name "Tanawha" is said to mean great hawk or eagle, though that is not the common term for either of those things… perhaps it was a name of a great eagle? The Tanawha Trail brought back the old name when it was completed in 1993 as an homage to the mountain's history.

Excellent video. I've been searching for end-to-end documentation of Tanawha and you completely nailed it.
We are thinking of doing Beacon Heights to Rough Ridge and back in Sept. We've done all the pieces individually, but think it would be a blast to string them together. Not sure where you'd find as many known landmarks on a relatively short stretch of trail.
