  • Press Release -
JENNETTE, Ark.- On Monday, April 1, 2024, at approximately 9:24 p.m., an Arkansas State Trooper attempted to stop a vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 near Exit 265 in Crittenden County. The driver, identified as Courtney Ridgeway, 28, of Smyrna, Tenn., failed to stop. Troopers pursued the fleeing vehicle, which reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour for approximately two miles on Bing’s Store Road.
Ridgeway lost control of her vehicle on the gravel road and crashed into a ditch. The Crittenden County Coroner pronounced Ridgeway deceased at the scene at approximately 10:42 p.m.
Two passengers in the suspect’s vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
“This incident underscores why Arkansas State Police has been cautioning the public for months about the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement,” said ASP Colonel Mike Hagar. “Fleeing is reckless and has serious consequences. When you see blue lights in your rearview mirror, be smart. Pull over.”
    -----------------------------------
    Trooper's Report:
On Monday, April 1, 2024, at approximately 9:21 P.M., I observed a 2020 white Ford Fusion (TX temp tag: 4902F84) traveling
eastbound on Interstate 40 near the 263-mile marker. As the Fusion entered Crittenden County near the 265-mile marker, I
observed it following a commercial truck and trailer at approximately 1 car length or closer. I attempted to conduct a traffic stop
with the Fusion as it exited Interstate 40 at the 265-mile marker by initiating my emergency lights on my marked patrol unit.
The Fusion disregarded my emergency equipment and began fleeing at speeds over 100 M.P.H., traveling north on Bing’s
Store Road. I attempted a T.V.I. on the vehicle while traveling north on the asphalt portion of Bing’s Store Road, but it was
ineffective. The Fusion then continued fleeing, reaching speeds over 116 M.P.H. I was notified the road transitioned from
asphalt to gravel and I began backing off the fleeing vehicle. At approximately 9:25 P.M., the Fusion entered the gravel portion
of Bing’s Store Road, causing dust to block its taillights. Once out of the dust, I observed the Fusion was overturned facing
east in the east ditch on Bing’s Store Road. Trooper Dairren Evans and I gave the rear passenger (Austin Cockrell) and front
passenger (Allison Martin) verbal commands to crawl out of the vehicle. Cockrell and Martin were detained without incident.
Troopers then observed the driver (Courtney Ridgway) lying on her back approximately 40 feet on the east side of the
overturned Fusion in a field. Ridgway had a faint pulse and was unresponsive.
Jennette Fire Department, Crittenden EMS, and West Memphis Fire Department made the scene and rendered aid to the
occupants of the Fusion. Martin was transported to the Regional One Medical Center by the West Memphis Fire Department.
Cockrell refused to be transported to a medical facility, but I transported him to Baptist Crittenden Hospital upon his request
once he was released from the scene. The Corner (William Wolfe) was notified, made the scene, and advised a time of death
of 10:42 P.M., for Ridgway. Bowden’s Wrecker Service towed the vehicle.

As a retired Police Sgt./Police Instructor/EMT and Professor of Emerg. Medicine, I'd like to say that I would never just stand there and tell the occupants of that car to crawl out on their own, hand cuff them and make them get up and walk without first having them medically assessed. There were enough officers there for scene and personal safety. There was no immenent threat to them to do that. Being that the car flipped and there was an ejection, it is highly likely that the other occupants were injured as well. By making them crawl out themselves and cuffing those passengers for no apparent reason, they could have done further damage to them if they were already injured.

First, Thank you for your service. Second, I'm so happy you posted this. I'm not against LEOs in the slightest bit. You all have a very tough job. In saying that, the way the trooper treated the kid in the back who obviously had zero control over what the driver was doing was out of line. Kicking him to put his arms behind him, very uncalled for. Then the way they were making the girl passenger get up so roughly as she's stating she's hurt, and the way they were talking to her even after they knew she wasn't the driver. I'm actually surprised to not see more comments about those 2 situations.

I'm not sure how they teach in other states however, in CT, this would not be acceptable behavior in the slightest. If that girl or guy had a back or neck injury, cuffing them and pulling them up to a standing position could have paralized them or even worse.

As the others said thank you for your post.30 years in EMS in PA I have never seen a police officer do this. Most want us to check the patient's out just to cover their butts. We get that. WE call them to enter a home with a domestic going on because we have no way to protect ourselves. This behavior is highly disturbing. One facture in the neck could permanently handicap one of them. I have had so many calls where people have facture their necks and did not know it. Have one call like that and you will never let a person get out of a car the has done this.

I've seen several videos where the passenger had nothing to do with the actions of the driver. Each one was absolutely terrified. I'm always reminded of a close call I had in HS. I was in a friend's car when he recognized two cars that were about to race. He immediately took off after them to join. I had an overwhelming sickening feeling that I needed to get out. To my horror, when I asked him to chill out or quickly let me out, he responded with, "You shouldn't have gotten in the car!" and initially refused. Mercifully, he angrily pulled over eventually and I jumped out. The dude practically clipped me with the car as he took off.
Although nothing happened with him, I've learned far enough that when your gut is genuinely telling you to quit doing something, you stop. He could drive like an absolute psychopath, so maybe that momentary pause caused him to miss a collision or a cop? Anything is possible.
Whenever I see videos like this it always reminds me of how scary such situations can be. I was lucky.

I just watched another video where the passenger in the backseat was a convicted felon on parole, and he was in possession of a firearm. The driver "claimed" that he threatened to shoot her if she stopped. The guy came along with the friend who asked for a ride, so the driver didn't even know him, she claimed. Anyway, just because someone is in the backseat or a passenger does not automatically make them innocent. Too many passengers in a fleeing vehicle are in possession of drugs or firearms. Someone in the vehicle had a reason to flee... so I get why they are all suspects when LE approaches.
So many of these people try to gaslight or lie to get out of the situation. Why anyone thinks LE is supposed to take them all at their word is beyond me. When you flee, everyone is suspect.

I was returning home from my daughter’s college, many years ago. It was early in the morning, on unfamiliar winding two lane roads. I noticed a set of tracks going off the road, so I turned around and went back to investigate. Once I got out of my car, I could hear the overturned car beeping. I looked in and around the car and found nobody. The engine block was cold. This was before cell phones, and I have no idea where I am at. I just got back in my car and continued my 14 hour drive home.

Not sure it was intentional, but yes, that is wise. Think of the guy they just saved after he was trapped in his truck for five days after going off the road. Maybe that wouldn't have helped him, but other cases it might. And it's just a simple alteration to the alarm system. Make the alarm go off if the airbags deploy. It won't work if the battery is destroyed, but sometimes it will. And cars going down banks and into trees is not that uncommon, and often the passing traffic doesn't notice anything amiss.

"People who have been hustling and surviving with no help since 17 are TIRED. What I mean by “no help” is no guidance throughout life, no guidance on how to get your career going, no understanding of credit or finances, no one to depend on during times of confusion, etc. just walked into everything blindfolded and had to figure it out on your own. It’s just taking us a little longer to get there which is okay but also draining."
Its a little creepy. She seemed like a totally normal, but a little damaged chick. You could tell she was not on the best path but not a bad person. I kinda wonder if she just ran because she was bored. It seems that way, or maybe a minor warrant.

I was a serving police officer for 20 years in the Uk and the PIT manoeuvre at 100mph was absolutely reckless beyond belief - he had no knowledge of how many were in the vehicle - perhaps young children or elderly persons.
Whilst as you say, it was stupid to flee when requested to stop, the object of the exercise is to bring the chase to a halt WITHOUT injury to anyone involved.
And as for the mis-treatment of the passengers in the vehicle - what can you say other than total unprofessional policing all round.. In the UK that PIT manoeuvre
at 100 mph would have resulted in dismissal and possibly jail time if anyone had been injured at that point !

Once the pulse becomes very shallow like that, it's not _THE_ problem, but a _SYMPTOM_ of the problem.
Look, in a collision, there are _THREE_ collisions.
1 - Car hits a tree or other car or whatever
2 - Person in the car hits the inside of the car
3 - Person's internal organs hit the inside of the person: hearts slams against inside of chest, or lungs slam, or liver slams, etc.
The third one is what kills you.
Crumple-zones reduce the impact of numer-1.... seat-belts and air-bags reduce the impact of number-2. There's nothing for number-3. And there's especially nothing for number-3 if you get slammed into the ground so that your rib-cage impacts the ground. If you jump out of a building from four floors up and try to land on your feet, at least your legs become the 'crumple-zone', but there's no such luck if you land on your side or your chest or back. Those organs are now dying, and that results in the shallow-pulse.
I was an EMT for a while, and people don't understand this thing: that just because a person isn't dead _YET_ doesn't mean that they can be saved. It's like the dying protocol has been executed, and the process isn't reversible once it's started. Some people get angry at you because you aren't saving their loved one. We are trying, _BUT_ we also know that this is a non-survivable injury, and the fact that they're still alive is a technicality.
Cop seems calm and encouraging with the "Stay with me" comments, but the friends of the driver get to sit handcuffed in squad cars and listen to radio-chatter as their friend is dying. It may be 0% their fault from a law perspective, but they know full well that they are complicit on some moral level, and they're getting their consequences in real-time, and that's going to be with them for the remainder of their lives. There's two of them, and just playing ordinary odds, one-of-the-two may make a peace with it... and one-of-the-two will hide in a bottle or some other drug, and it's this moment right here that started it all and will have lead to them essentially ruining their own life.
One died from the crash on the scene. Another died from the crash twenty-something years later from the substance abuse.
Pick your friends carefully - you've got *one* life... it's like a poster-board, _who are you going to let scribble on it?_

I thought the officer detaining the passengers was a little rough on them. They could've been severely injured from that accident. It's entirely possible those occupants were victims of the driver that chose to flee from police. I understand placing them in handcuffs; but, they shouldn't have been moved until paramedics evaluated and cleared them medically. The driver was only 28 year's of age. Yes, she made an awful decision, which she fully paid for. But, she was still someone's loved one. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

    • @rickb3674
      @rickb3674 2 месяца назад +16

That is intentional! Police do this to people all the time. They call it a "Forced Error". They pressure you to do something before it is optimal for you. You think you are doing them a favor and getting out of their way and the next thing you know they slide in right behind you. Now you are stuck too close to a semi truck and you have a cop on your ass so you can't hit brakes to slow down to give yourself space. Then they turn their lights on and pull over. You just gave them exactly what they wanted, a reason to pull you over and go fishing for a more serious crime.
The lesson here is do not let them to bully you into making a mistake. If they are behind you maintain your lane and the speed limit and wait until you are in a good position to make your next move. I don't care if they have their lights on and you think they are just going to an emergency call. Do not make a move until you can do so without putting yourself in a bad position.

@@rickb3674they "do it intentionally"? What, drive on the road and make you nervous by being there just as an excuse to pull you over? That makes all the sense. Thanks. You are responsible for driving safely, if you do something dangerous just because a cop was driving behind you, yes, they may pull you over. Because you did something dangerous. And there is zero reason for you not to hit your brakes to slow down to not get to close to traffic in front of you. That is not against the law. The cop behind you is responsible for not hitting you, unless you are actually brake checking him. Although you shouldnt have cut in behind the truck so closely that you need to hit the brakes to create a safe distance to start with. I can't see what remedy the police are supposed to adopt to fix this "problem", unless it's not driving on the highway because it might make people nervous. Or just ban police from pulling people over for minor unsafe driving offenses that occur in front of them, because it might be unfair to the driver who was only nervous because the cop was behind them. Which basically means never pulling anyone over for stuff like that, because the people they pull over are always the ones that did something right in front of them. And incidentally that's how most drunk drivers and warrants get arrested finally, because they were pulled over for some minor offense which is usually just a warning if it was really minor and the person is clean otherwise. If they do ticket you it's because you did something dumb, whatever the reason you did it, and they want you to _not do it again_ . That's literally the reason for traffic citations. They want you to do exactly what you said: drive the speed limit and don't do dangerous shit just because there is a cop behind you. Not sure where you get that this is this nefarious plot they worked out intentionally just to screw you over. They didn't tell you to do it, they didn't ask you to do it, they will pull you over to discourage you from doing it. But they definitely just made you do it so they could have the pleasure of pulling you over . Right.

Wow! Yes the driver definitely should have pulled over. No doubt. But I can find no excuse for how rude and inconsiderate the first 2 troopers were to the passengers that had just been involved in a high speed automobile rollover. The young man that crawled out of the back was obviously not the driver yet one trooper first kicked his arm and then cranked on it while putting on the cuffs then jerked him around while getting him to his feet. Not quite as rough with the female but not gentle either then shoved her around as well even though she was still seat belted into the passenger seat when they arrived and not the driver either. I’ve seen hundreds of videos where even the criminals were treated kinder than this. Once the Leo’s have the upper hand in the situation it’s time to calm themselves and the situation down. And have often commented on the professionalism they show and the care they give to injured parties. The first couple of troopers at the accident scene in this video need to go through a refresher course in compassion so they can be reminder how to DO BETTER! Just think guys how would you feel if those were your son/nephew or daughter/niece getting roughed up like that for being guilty of being a passenger?
Back to the driver, her death is a pretty steep price she decided to make her family, loved ones and friends pay for her bad decision.

Kinda looks like he was trying to break his arm/shoulder, definitely trying to make it unnecessarily painful...
And the immediate attempt to PIT at 100 mph for a simple traffic violation (tailgating), while there are passengers in the car, pretty much sums up the mindset of those troopers here, sure fleeing from a traffic stop to avoid a ticket for a misdemeanor is beyond stupid, but tailgating doesn't justify an instant high-speed PIT and the harsh treatment of the passengers.

following another vehicle too closely and then fleeing. All of which were the direct actions of the driver and only of the driver..
The passengers had broken precisely zero laws, yet were roughly handled and cuffed behind the back and herded into the squad cars with no visible care for whether or not that same driver guilty of all of the offenses hurt them, as well. Not like they'd been pursued after robbing a bank or something. Just a moving violation turned evading the police.
