HARD OFF Retro Game Hunt in Tokyo (A Mountain of Games and Consoles)

- I hopped on the train and headed west, all the way to the town of Tachikawa on the far west side of Tokyo. I went down to the Hard Off in Tachikawa Sakae to look for some games, found a ton of great stuff, including the rarest item I've ever come across.

My first goal IF I ever visit Japan is to go on a retro game hunting spree. These vlog style videos look so intriguing!
That boxed famicom at 7:50 ish was a square-button model... a lot harder to find than the circle button model!
Yeah, I didn't really notice at the time, not until someone mentioned it to me. Don't see those very often.
Damn, I thought I knew a lot about the famicom, but never knew the original model had square buttons! I’ve come across many famicoms and have never seen that before.
@@Gunbu They're quite uncommon! The story goes that the buttons stuck a lot, and Nintendo was quick to fix the issue which gave them a good reputation for customer service, early before the Famicom became a countrywide success.
as a retro gamer who lives in england this is torture .those prices are so cheap i would practically push the rack to the till
Woah, never seen that SEGA Boom box before. So cool!
Also, my local Game Store has Combatribes for 10 bucks as well. Might pick it up, it looks good.
Yeah, I'd never seen one either, was really cool to see one in the wild but damn, I'll never afford that lol
이번달 22일에 일본 도쿄로 레트로 게임을 사러 갑니다. 좋은 정보를 얻었습니다. 감사합니다.
I am going to Tokyo, Japan to buy a retro game on the 22nd of this month. I got good information. Thank you.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
I do appreciate that you tell where those places are. Thank you!!!!!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Love that old Sega ad!
Me too!
Hey I know Tachikawa it’s not far from where I’m living. I will check this shop thank you for the info
Tachikawa is also the station that has the second (and muuuuuch less crowded) immigration centre. Recommended to go there instead of Shinagawa!
Yep, I'll be stopping by there next year.
wow spice orange cube boxed with gameboy player for 100 bucks unreal
Funny that you mention that about the MSX. Considering 7 million machines were sold in Japan alone, 9 million worldwide. Which is on par with Saturn figures and you find them in an abundance. Perhaps it is the age difference being MSX often 10 years older than the Saturn. Great video Jim. Very nice selection of games and pretty clean well priced consoles. Regarding the rare find, I am not a fan of the console brand but even I raised an eyebrow. 👍
That Aiwa Boom Box belongs in a gaming museum! I believe I remember softotaku has one though from one of his older youtube vids.
Yeah, if I recall correctly he has one boxed and in near mint condition. That'll be nifty when his kids need some college money lol
Thanks for teleporting to Tachikawa! Always so lot of games where to choose from... 🙂
It was my pleasure, thanks for watching!
That Kid Dracula for Game Boy in the glass case earlier in the video is about as cheap as I've seen it in years.
Yeah, not a bad deal on it, but I don't have much need for GB games these days
@@MadPanicGaming It is one of the platforms I collect for, 141 games between GB/GBC/GBA, stll lots to get. GB was one of the last cheap bastions to collect for, sadly that is no more.
A Great upload Jim. i owned a Toshiba MSX HX-10. enjoyed collecting the Konami Cartdridges with the SSCC sound chip
If I ever do buy an MSX it'll pretty much be just for the Konami games
If there's any beat them up game better than this, I sure was not introduced to it. 🐢 in ⌚ is the GOAT.
Another top video mate 🤙
Thanks
@@MadPanicGaming just wanted to ask you can you do a video on capcom company Konami factory etc
Big hug from Greece brother,i love your videos
Thank you!
9:00 - That boombox that plays Genesis games is AWESOME!
Oh man, super cool pick ups! Thanks for sharing. I don't think I've ever played Side Arms for PC Engine.
It's a top notch shooter, highly recommended.
That store was super clean! Like how they bag up all the loose carts
Gosh, that Aiwa Sega boombox is one of my dream items
I was certainly surprised and excited to come across it, but knew I'd never afford it lol
That Mega Drive Aiwa boombox hurts my soul. I would love to have one of those, and yet I could never spend that kind of money on a game console. I've always wanted one since seeing one in a game magazine back in ye olden days. I'd rather buy $3000 worth of games instead of one rare console.
My sentiments exactly
funny enough after your last video I actually picked up SEGA AGES 2500: Hokuto no Ken on PS2! I think I need an upscaler or something to play the original, but the remake is a pretty interesting twist although a lot of these bosses seem super cheap! a fun stupid beat-em-up aside from that, for sure. I had heard of that MEGA-CD boombox before, man yeah would not mind owning one of those for sure! overall looked like some great finds! love me some TMNT 4, what a fun beat-em-up.
Just an FYI, Soul Hackers did indeed get a US release on the 3DS!
Good stuff!
Jim is having fun as usual. I wouldn't want to see it any other way from this cool dude. 8^)
Anthony...
YOU NEED TO RESELL THEM BRO
Love the annihilator shirt Jim!
Hi Jim, cool video!
Watching the japanese youtube channels about hard off hauls, the MSX looks quite prevalent, but maybe it's in other stores that where you usually go. They also find all the family of japanese retro computers
Id love it if someone would buy like 100-200 worth of boxed 64 games and send them to canada id pay. Possibly nes and snes boxed imports too. Or just a box of loose n64 carts
I'm carbon dating my age when I say this, but I remember seeing brand new copies of Side Arms at Electronics Boutique at Gurnee Mills Mall in Gurnee IL for 0.99 cents brand new. This was over 20 some years ago. They had over 30 copies of them in stock.
I think i'll have to bring an empty suitcase when (not if) i go to Japan to fit all the stuff i buy. Lol
Sheesh you went to tachikawa i shouldve went out that day 😱
I have never seen that pink tamagotchi GBC before 17:18. Soul Hackers got a western release on 3DS
Soul hackers got a 3DS release in the west!
Jim you have great taste in music !!
Thank you kindly
Hot monorail action.
Got me excited anyway
I own that Parodius game....it features Parodius Da! and Gokujo Parodius
Nice, thanks for the info!
I was finding all sorts of bargains in book off hard off etc Sometimes you can get some super sneaky bargains priced wrong
Always feels good when that happens
Reggie recommended me over here, so glad I checked your channel out. Great content, love the footage of the trip. This seemed like a really cool store.
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm somehow really persuaded to like and comment this time around 🤔🤔🤔
Then my ploy has worked, muahahaha!
Beltlogger 9 was released in the US as Brahma Force, an equally weird name.
Great video Jim! This place was crazy with the selection compared to what you normally find in your videos. I thought your music choice on this one was fantastic on this one. You have the listing?
I lived near ichikawa for a short bit decades ago and for a sec I thought that hard off was there. 😅
Nice t-shirt man 👌
Thank you! Annihilator rules and Jeff Waters is one of my all time favorite guitarists.
@@MadPanicGaming no doubt about it!
I never knew Rockman X3 got a PS1 release.
Yep, and a Saturn release as well. Same gameplay and graphics, but the music is updated and there are FMV cutscenes. Pretty cool port.
7:54 Wow! Square button famicom there! Quite rare isn't it?
Yeah, I didn't catch that lol. It's the first model of Famicom I think, they changed to different buttons shortly after because the square ones were faulty
There is one Hard-off in Taiwan also. However, I feel the price of retros, no matter consoles or games are unreasonablly expensive. Only those sport games, Mahjong games may be cheaper. Not worth to hunt games there.
ハードオフの動画は見てるだけで楽しいです👍✨
Look at the Condition of the Console's and the Box's , they often look after their items really carefully6 the Japaniese and I Salute that.
Nice, wish an nice day☘️🐞😙
in the states they call the store book off, and im curious if they carry US versions of the consoles or games because here they sell both American and Japanese games.
Book Off is actually a separate chain of stores which we also have in Japan. As the name implies, Book Off carries a lot of manga and books in addition to used games, movies, and music, while Hard Off carries hardware such as PCs, home appliances, and audio equipment.
Huh. Well I started living in shinjuku recently cuz of Uni so I might head out there when I get some spare time. I got myself a super famicom here so that would be fun to dig around for. In particular I've been looking for tales of phantasia but I can literally not find it boxed anywhere except super potato, but there its mega overpriced
Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to your patron soon I'd love a super nintendo Famicom set from there would be nice with 3 of my main favorite games hopefully soon I'll be able too. Will I have to order new cables for the American wall plug in as well just curious.
Nope, Japanese cables will work just fine in the US
I really like the fact you say which location. Any other suggestions for game hunting location in that city? I was think about going their over the weekend
In Tachikawa you mean? If so, the Book Off Super Bazar near the station also has a lot of games.
I like your new avatar.
Thank you! It was designed by a friend of mine.
What the music track thats starting around 0:50 it’s pretty good . Sounds like Sonic
It's the Rumble in the Zoo stage theme from Shredder's Revenge. The soundtrack on that game is outstanding.
こんにちは。立川に来てくれてありがとうございます。
Will the N64 games work in a Usa version ?
How often do you see the famicom game Gimmick! when you are out gamehunting?
Not very often, it's rare and expensive title, glass case material
Do you ever see pacman famicom in the hard case and if so, how much does it usually go for? Thanks.
Now that I think about it, I always find that game loose, don't think I ever find it with the clam shell, but I imagine it's not so expensive. It's a pretty common game.
@@MadPanicGaming Around $200 on ebay for a complete in box with all the trimmings. The cardboard version is about $80.
chop-a-leeftah!
Could you tell me how much they sell 3DSs for in Japan? Thanks!
As a gamer who was once a huge TENCHU fan, I must say that the series has aged like milk - especially the first one. I still own the original Tenchu, and it is just horrid. The controls are are godawful, which makes me wonder how in the hell I ever played it in the first place. It changed my gaming life back in the late 90s, and the soundtrack is still one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
subscribed the minute you spoke the truth....diddy kong racing is better than mario kart
I don't know how anyone can argue otherwise
Soul hacker had a ds release
I like hard off and hard ons
What's the name of the background song?
最近外国人にも人気なのか、海外版売ってることあるよ。
秋葉原店だと、NESやgenesisの中古品があったりする。
Did you pay in cash? Is that still cool over there?
Youre right. Diddy Kong Racing is superior to Mario Kart 64.
MK64 is trash. Those who love it only do so because it was their first Mario Kart
I wouldn't go as far as calling it trash, but it's definitely lackluster compared to DK Racing. MK64 doesn't really do anything new, but DKR greatly expands on the premise of a kart racer and does things that future kart racers would emulate.
im sure you got more knowlage about japan retro games shops shere with us pls
do they shipping?
Nice games but I don't have income....
Nice and cheap
Are all the games in Japanese language?
Yo Kid I’m wanting to visit Akhibara next year. Are there services where young Japanese women will show foreigners around and go grab dinner, like a paid date? I don’t mean anything sexual, I’d just want a local to show me around.
Um, not sure really, I know there are companies that offer tours around Tokyo, not sure they schedule one on one tours though.
It is overrated place. I visited tokyo last month for weeks. Prices increases so much and less options. Better search in akihabara for retro games
As a tourist it’s not the best but as a resident, it’s not bad. They’re convenient.
Akiba is like the worst place if you wanna find good prices, all the great deals I found in Japan were most of the time outside the tourists areas
Actually, Hard Off is franchised, the prices change from one store to the next, so it's best to shop around. Akihabara is great because it has everything all in once place, but the prices are reliably high.
I spend 6 weeks in Tokyo and searched tons of hardoff stores, sadly alternatives were high. At akihabara ı found 3ds at 12 us dollars ( as like new) , bought big collector edition games at 30 dollars and tons of retro games at very cheap prices. Akihabara is expensive right but has gems inside. Also surugaya stores has lots of surprise. Hardoff prices were generally high at that duration
I like watching japagemu because he has a car 🚗 dont need to watch any walking between stores
Turtles in Time is not (nor was it ever) the best 2D brawler, ever. Streets of Rage 2 or 3 was the best 2D brawlers, ever. Atleast until STREETS OF RAGE 4 released.
I get the feeling you're going to take issue with my upcoming TMNT reviews lol
@@MadPanicGaming You damn skippy I will😂
Jesus I remember buying majority of those boxed gameboy games and n64 games for 200-1000 back in 2016 🥲
